Thanks for posting... FYI, you can get the alternator out by just disconnecting the tie rod end and removing that lower plastic wheel well access panel and work the ALT out the side opening . it is a bit tricky to get the plug and power cable off the back of the ALT after removed from the bracket, but they do come off. Also as you found out after removing your ALT, you only need to loosen the long mounting bolt but remove the smaller bolt before prying and tapping the ALT up and back out of its U shaped bracket using a long screw driver , pry bar and a hammer. This will still all be done from the wheel well and under the engine frame both. Hope this helps someone,

Are you talking about doing this without having to remove the CV joint? Just undoing that tie rod end Which is what I think he basically started to do anyways?
@vincephan3444 жыл бұрын
I just did this today for a customer, you do not have to remove the axle. I thought about removing it too but for some reason the 2007 2.7 4wd I worked on, there was absolutely no room behind the axle to tap it out or pry it out, it was blocked by some plate. That was too much work so I removed the vertical bracket that was holding the power steering line and that gave me enough room to wiggle the alternator out. If you tilt it a certain way it comes right out with room to clear. Overall wasn't too bad of a job, was easier on a lift for sure.

if you look at where the long bolt of the alternator attaches to the block (22:40) its a "c" shape, so the long bolt only has to be loose and you can pry the alternator up and out , and then remove the bolt outside of the car. That way you don't have to remove the bracket behind the alternator. I noticed that after all the work I did removing the bracket to push the bolt all the way through. Live and Learn. thanks for the video, it definitely helped.

I just watched another video by a different mechanic and he realized afterwards that the bolt doesn't have to come off. It is sort of hooked into the bracket. I'm going to watch a few more. It seems everyone does it differently as far as removing brackets and tie rods to get into it.

I just did mine using this video. you do not need to "swivel or remove" the back piece behind the alternator. The long bolt can stay in the alternator just take a pry bar and pry up and back on the alternator. other than that this video was awesome.

Make sure you check belt and connectors first and ensure the alternator is actually bad before doing this. With changes in weather, corrosion on either side of power connections can cause the same symptom as a bad alternator, depleting battery.

Yes very helpful vid, just did a 05 sportage 2.7, I didnt see any other way to get this out then to take the axl off and everything else associated with it on the pass side, I used a 2 1/2 foot 1/2" thick rod an got through to axl from driver side wheel underneath, to tap it out, there was a direct shot to it, once alt. was unbolted I rotated it to get wire connection off from underneath, rotated it again, put wood blocks under it an got the cable from above with extensions an swivel socket, then it was able to remove it from the car, totally difficult job I would say, with it out I took it to the shooting range to vent my frustrations i had for it.

Almost the same thing to do w a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder. But this just looks a bit more complicated with all that needs o be taken off. I do NOT feel like doing this ALL over again with my Sportage but I don't wanna pay hundreds in the shop. Thanks for the video And thank you for those In the comments with the shortcuts.

I don't know how you got to the wires to remove them. It's really, really tight. I haven't taken the cv joint out, but did remove a bracket to the side of it that helped. Unfortunately, my tensioner was broken and the belt had been riding on only half of the tensioner pulley and slid over against the engine housing. It was eating the belt up and a problem waiting to happen. I found a new tensioner for less than half the cost at local auto parts stores, so now I'm waiting for a new tensioner and belt. In the meantime I will try to finish getting the alternator out, but may have to remove the cv.

You should make a note at 20:14 that the alternator bolt doesn't come off. It's set in a hook type bracket and once loosened, it just a matter of pushing the alternator up to unhook it from the bracket.

Your video is just in time! I used a cold chisel as a lever to pry CV axle toward me, from the hub side (did not get beneath auto). Thanks for posting!
@craiggerlach5548 Жыл бұрын
Taking the top 2 pinch bolts off will cause alignment issues, you could spray some paint, wait to dry and match up when reassemble, but better to just pop bottom ball joint.. or pull without as others mentioned.. but for those removing axles, do not loosen up near strut unless willing to pay 100 for alignment...
@craiggerlach5548 Жыл бұрын
then if alternator failed and battery low, make sure to charge battery before starting or risk frying that new alternator...

Did you have to worry about specifying the amps or anything like thatbwhen getting this alternator? Also out of curiosity how much were you able to get the part for if you recall?? I'm getting over $300 at the parts stores but online am getting fluctuating prices all the way down to around $80 to $140 but generally around $100 which is what I expected.
@dylanbjug3 жыл бұрын
@@davidu8688 oops sorry for the delayed response. I didn't see the reply. Iirc, I spent about 90-100 on it. I order all of my parts through rockautoparts online. I didn't worry about amps. They separate parts by vehicle fitment. When I changed it out, I had to remove the belt and a couple other things. It was a pain but I haven't had any problems with the new alt. Unfortunately, I've had to replace just about every suspension part, steering component, etc. Basically everything under the car that moves. Btw, don't buy cheap cv axle from O'Reilly's. They last like 2k miles before they click and clunk and make you worry you're gonna break down at any minute.

Thanks for the video i remember doing this about 6 yrs ago, its time to do it again so i needed a refresher. Fuck if it wasnt a bitch the first time, the bolt on the underside pissed me off so bad that i just cut it off and put a new bolt on with the nut on the back side. I was just tired of removing shit just to drop the alternator. Hahaha thanks again
