Quick question, what did you torque those 4 pinion yoke bolts to? Can't find the info anywhere. Thanx.

Hey I feel like this is a dumb question. But when I did this the bolt you need an 1¹/⁴ socket for came off by finger. So I did the seal put bolt on with one thread like you. Now the part I put the bolt on is bent a little up towards the car do you think I need to replace the rear. It still wines and I think that's it. Thank you for this video it definitely helped

1.25 inch, but a 32mm will do it.

What oil you have?
@lexlayabout57573 жыл бұрын
I've just done this on a 2007 Grand Cherokee (same axle) over 3 days, about 10 hours work. I'm an experienced mechanic BTW and have done many seals in the past, including a 1996 Cherokee pinion seal, but none were as hard as this one. In my case nothing went as easy as it does here*. Eg it took an hour getting the old seal out with a cold chisel, not including the time having to sharpen it to a very fine point first; no way could mine have been removed with a screwdriver. Then, no way would the new seal go in at first, it was about 1/2mm over-size and I spent 2 hours carefully filing it down to fit - even then it was very tight and I hammered it in with a steel reaction block on the opposite side to the hammer - mine could not possibly have been gently tapped in like 20:10 ! My seal was made by Crown BTW. I expect a lot of diff oil would run out after removing the yoke and seal if you did not at least lower the oil level first - I did it with a syringe. Also, the full service manual specifies a new yoke nut - it's a Niloc type. With a new nut, marking the old one is pointless. The manual says tighten to a preload to give a cetain turning resistance and this can only be felt with the rear axle up on stands and the brakes removed. At least that gave me the chance to inspect the brakes properly. I don't have an impulse wrench at home so for the yoke nut I used a 32mm socket on a breaker bar - _3/4" drive system_ . I also had to make (welding job) a large "C spanner" to prevent the yoke from turning (equivalent to the official tool C-3281). The torque on the nut is around 210 ft-lb and I needed an additional lever on the breaker bar, all set up on wooden blocks in the confined space and my eyeballs were bulging with the effort. Even before the new big Niloc nut bottoms out it took I reckon about 100 ft-lb just to turn it down the thread and in the confined space I could only turn it 1/12 turn at a time, after which the wooden blocks would all need setting up again for the next 1/12 turn, each taking a few minutes. I my case it would have been far easier up on a lift, or even if I had taken the whole rear axle out for the job. * Except for the four flange bolts - I've had the prop shaft removed in the past and I don't put them back with thread lock.

Is this the rear or front seal sir ?
@TreyClanton2 жыл бұрын
This is the front seal (or pinion seal) of the rear differential.
@GBC186 жыл бұрын
Hey, nice video. I'm about to do my rear pinion seal as it's leaking. How long did it take you to do from start to finish (not including the rear diff).
@TreyClanton6 жыл бұрын
GBC18 If you don’t change out the rear differential fluid, it’s doable in about an hour.
@GBC186 жыл бұрын
Cheers. I'll be doing the fluid too but didn't have an idea for the seal

They say you should use a new nut??? I suppose you don't have to.
