Excellent video... completed the gasket change today. I'll let it cure over night and cross my fingers it was my leak problem. I didn't see any other leak above the rear oil pan / transmision area. (good sign).

Awesome video! I gotta do this to my JK, replaced the valve cover gaskets a little over a month ago, still noticed a slow oil leak, went underneath and I can see what looks to be fairly fresh oil all around the oil pan. I can only assume that it’s more than likely the upper gasket, but I’m gonna go ahead and tackle both, the Jeep has 207,000 and some change miles on it, and I’m pretty confident that it’s never been done on it before, I’ve only had it since April of this year. Haven’t had anything major on it so far, and I plan to keep it that way. I’ve just been taking care of each little issue as it shows up, that way it’s done and over with. Luckily I’m due for an oil change anyways, so I might as well go ahead and get it over with now.

How long for the RTV to dry before you add oil? The package says 24 hours, but with just 4 small areas of RTV I was wondering if it would be sooner. Thanks for the great video! It gave me the confidence I needed to change mine this afternoon.

I have always added oil and started the engine after I get through with the job and have never had a problem. One thing you can do is squeeze a small thin dab on a piece of paper and check it after you are finished with the job and if you think it is set up enough you will probably be ok.

What oil should I fill up with?

I like Valvoline full synthetic, I have put over 500,000 miles on my last truck, and over 300,000 on my wife's last vehicle and both never burned a drop of oil. I think the viscosity is 0-20 but look at the oil fill cap and it should say on it.
