Love this generation of Cayenne. It just feels like the gen which Porsche gave it the real juice and its before "platformization" . The pre-facelift first gen cayenne were very old-looking to me when the facelift definitely fixed it all. I was a kid back then and til this day I still think the first gen facelifted Cayenne is the best Cayenne.

I have been in countless discussion about, “automatic” vs Manual. And the common theme is that you have someone who doesn’t get or understand the “thing” with manual transmission, most of them can’t even drive “stick” or if the can they aren’t that good at it. Yes modern “Automatics” are “better” they are faster, “easier and more comfortable” to drive, but that isn’t what it is about, speed isn’t everything, you can’t beat the experience of driving a manual, shifting your own gears, being in complete control of the clutch and transmission, manuals usually age better because there isn’t any that goes out of date (apart from your self). Even though (modern) “automatics” are objectively better at pretty much everything, I still prefer manual cars for the enjoyment factor, i daily drive a manual, both my cars are manuals. What I’m trying to say is, in my opinion you can’t beat the feeling, experience of driving a “stick shift”, you sort of become a part of the car in a way that you don’t do with an “automatic”.
@iflaw01
@iflaw01 3 жыл бұрын
This is true. I've already seen two of my friends whom ive encouraged to buy a stick shift car change how they think. They now only want to drive stick. The second guy I put on originally was going to purchase a DCT F80 M3, and ever since I told him to buy a beater stick shift car, completely changed how he felt. He currently owns a Manual 2018 Bmw M3 haha

My dad baught a first gen cayenne right off the showroom floor in 2005 and he said he was worried about driving me around in it because he was worried about the stiff suspension damaging my brain. He still did but prefered to drive his 91 300se w140 which was a very reliable trouper and cls 55 (which was much more comfortable) back to the point 16 years later I ride in the cayenne I completely agree with him the suspension is probably the hardest riding suspension out of almost any car I've ridden in still love the car.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 3 жыл бұрын
What? What the kind of cars are you comparing to, its not stiff at all compared to almost anything that is supposed to be "sporty". In fact, its about on the same level as a newer normal european station wagon. "damage the brain", talk about different perspectives. Wild. Let me assure you, it wouldnt have. Proably hust something your father said to keep you out of the car.

@@GoldenCroc that was a joke but our base cayenne that I’ve been riding in my hole life has some of the stiffest suspension I’ve felt but the car handles very well and is surefooted at high speed the suspension on that car is particularly jarring on rough road compared to the other cars I have driven.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 3 жыл бұрын
@@romans7177 Yeah, its pretty stiff compared to many cars, and certainly all lot of others in 2005, and for a SUV its extremely stiff for its time, yeah. As you surmised, its setup for high speed, which would have been a big use back in its country of origin. Cheers.

Those buttons aren't blank just from being used. A bunch of auto manufacturers around that time used a really crappy paint to mark their switches that would easily come off when detailing. @Tedward Great review. But I love all your reviews. Incredibly detailed and descriptive. You really feel like you can get a real sense of how each car drives and each car's individual qualities with your reviews. By the way, have you reviewed an early pre-s4 porsche 928 5 speed manual yet? I'd love to hear your impressions on one. Preferably maybe an 86.5 model, which combined some later S4 upgrades with the earlier body and a 5.0L I believe, at least for the US models. A Euro spec 928S 5-speed would be even better, if you can get your hands on one to review. I'm putting it out there, in case anyone has one to lend to @Tedward.

@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 3 жыл бұрын
@@frozenpete788 Hi Pete. I dont know what to tell you that couldnt be taken as an insult. Please believe me when I tell you that is not my intent. A bit of background: I have driven a car very similar to the one you describe, and many others like it, using the same driveline. I have towed heavy objects which are multiples of the cars maximum tow rating. I have done hill starts in heavy gradients with and without heavy trailers behind for years. Never a problem. Never replaced a clutch or even had any discernable wear on any of the cars I have owned. What is my secret? I dont think I am some kind of superman, as evidenced by the fact that many others can do it. I think its just practice. It took me quite some time to get this good, rome wasnt built in a day. So thats I what I would advise; more practice, and its likely your fears/problems regarding this will go away. Cheers.
@frozenpete788
@frozenpete788 3 жыл бұрын
@@GoldenCroc no offense taken. I mostly drive manuals (9 cars on 10), I tow my stuff around with an A6 avant Quattro tiptronic because its the only trans option and that has a hitch. I've driven cars on road and track, 4x4, heavy duty trucks. Believe me heating a clutch and burning it doesn't take much if it has seen use or it's older. You might get away with a brand new one sometimes and it depends. The clutch on my 530d has 257.000kms and is original, the trans on the A6 has 347.000 and is original too never been opened. Take the original clutch on my e30, the disc is warped when hot. Being gentle with your ride will get you far for sure. Sometimes you do need to push the limits a little and that has nothing to do with fear. You have to feel when it's time to let things cool or back off a bit that's it. Why do you think we have clutch temps warnings on big rigs even with automated gearboxes. Try to take off even half the max weight of a big semi with limited traction on a big hill a few times. Things will get hot quickly. Our race driver welded the clutch to the flywheel on the race truck too, and it's a very expensive part, sintered metalic pucks disc. Just slipped too much on the start.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 3 жыл бұрын
@@frozenpete788 It seems you also have a lot of experience as well then. But we are looking at it from different angles, you are worried the clutch might give out if it is very worn or almost at the end of its service life. That is a fair point, it is more likely to happen, certainly. I am looking at it from the view that the clutch is in good, servicable condition to start with. If you are stuck in mud or similar or doing heavy offroading with a lot of clutch slip and high throttle levels it is more likely you will burn the clutch, indeed. But common sense goes a long way. If you can smell it, its time to back off for a while, as I am sure you know. Anyway, believe me when I say that if the clutch isnt on its last legs, there is no reasonable on road towing a normal weight race car + trailer that will have any adverse affect on a cayenne with manual gearbox such as this one. I guarantee it. Also, the cayenne of this model also have a low range, which if used put even less strain on the clutch. So dont let that dissuade you. Cheers.

I've been trying to find one of these, one of the ultra rare Porsche's I been trying to get my hands on. I looked at a Black GTS when I was in high school when they came out. Now this one is gone Damnit!

The only bad thing about this Porsche cayenne from this era are the miles most of them are 80, 100k miles or more so people squeeze all the juice from these cars

@@VMAdventures88 I think the 2nd gen Cayennes have more miles than the 1st gen. I think it’s because the 2nd gen Cayenne offered 2 diesels. A V6 turbo diesel on a base Cayenne and V8 turbo diesel on the Cayenne S. My friend’s neighbor has a 2013 Cayenne with a diesel still working at 150 to 200k miles..
@VMAdventures88
@VMAdventures88 3 жыл бұрын
@@jonlosito2004 Wtf? Of course it would still work. 150k miles for a diesel is nothing. Many older Mercedes diesels (2000-2008) are close to 400K miles in Europe. Those are baby miles yall stating. I do nearly 50K miles annually and that's not something remarkable for Europe.
