2011 Audi Q5 2.0T FSI timing chain removal

In this time-lapse video I am removing the timing chain in my continued investigation in to my P0016 OBDII code, following a fresh rebuild due to Audis oil consumption issue. I have already verified the chain itself was dead on (and will check again here)(took about 60 rotations). I replaced the cam and crank sensors (crack sensor was toast but not the culprit) to no avail. My last and most involved option was to tear the system down and start fresh again. At the end of the video I discover that the crank sprocket was 1 tooth off timing from the crank shaft thus causing all my issues.Even though the sprocket is notched with enough torque the notch is small enough to be clamped into the crankshaft at any angle. thank full it was only off by 1 tooth and no other damage was done to valves.

Thanks for this video. I’m starting the route of changing the camshaft position sensor and at the same time removing the timing covers to hopefully see if the chain didn’t jump. So in the end what part did you have to purchase or swap? Do you know what causes these issues on these new 2.0t motors? The older 1.8t and 2.0t didn’t have these issues. Thanks!

Typically it is because the timing tensioner fails causing the chain to jump a tooth or 2. In my case it was not either of the sensors my crank sprocket was not in the correct position causing it to run out of time. So if you have not had the timing chain off as of yet I would lean towards the chain jumped and you will need to replace the timing tensioner. You are on the right track make sure all 3 timing Mark's line up. If you had the chain off recently I would pull it all back apart and check the crank sprocket. It has very subtle indents that have to line up. But once its torqued in place you can't tell they are misaligned.

I thought the engine was in time and one of the sensors needed to be replaced? How did you test the sensors?

The sensors where so cheap i just put in new sensors. It turned out to be the crank sprocket off by 1 groove.

How did you refill the condenser?

I did no have to disconnect any A/C lines for this project. but to properly refill the system you need to vacuum out the system and use a set a manifold gauges to refill with the proper oil and Freon. its not hard if you have the correct equipment.

@@danielsgarage3545 so you can disconnect the ac condenser without having to refill it? Can you explain to me how you were able to do that please

I unbolted the compressor from the block and had it tied to the side of the car. No a/c lines removed.
