Great info. I'll be changing out ball joints on my 2010 Kia Soul. I've actually previously changed out both control arms with Moog and the latest one, done in mid 2019, went bad already. Discovered yesterday when I changed a wheel bearing. Lucky I kept the old control arms so I'll be pressing new ball joints and bushings into them and swapping them back in.

How do I remove the driverside tie rod bolt. The joint keeps moving, doesnt have tge same type of bolt and nut?

Thank you so much for this video. I just replaced the ball joints and drive axles on my son's 2011 Kia Sorento, and your video (and loaner tools from AutoZone and Advance Auto) made it much easier. One thing I would add is that I removed the entire control arm in order to be able to remove the ball joint from the "spindle assembly" (not sure if this is the correct term), as this enabled me to drive it out with a punch and a big hammer. It also made it easier to remove the old axle and install the new one; I think it was easier to press out the old ball joint and press in the new one with it off the car, and it wasn't very much extra work. I managed to damage the tie rod end when removing it, so I had to replace that; it will also need a front-end alignment to make sure that everything is correct.

glad it helped. Front struts for this vehicle coming shortly.

I'm doing the same thing, bolt is seized in there bad. I rounded the head off. I too was going to pull the lower control arm and spindle so I could heat it and beat it out with a hammer/punch. Did you use sledge or air hammer?
@darrellkidd51774 жыл бұрын
@@sixoh5ive840 I used a big sledge hammer (I don't have an air hammer/chisel). It was a lot easier to beat on it with it off the car. I soaked it in PB Blaster first, turned the nut around and put it back on enough to cover the end of the threads, but it pretty much destroyed the nut and the end of the bolt. Fortunately, the ball joints I bought came with a new nut and bolt. As always, the second one took about half as much time as the first one (learned a lot about what to do and what not to do on the first one, LOL).

Just curious why I wouldn't just replace the whole control arm and then enjoy the rest of my Saturday after removing 3 bolts and then putting them back in. The control arm may be more expensive, but my time is worth more... what is the advantage of going through all of this?
@CharlesAndCars3 жыл бұрын
You can replace the control arm if you want, but it's not necessarily less cost. For me I'm trying to help someone out and they're not paying the labor cost. The only cost to them is the actual part.
@Springfield-eo8jl2 жыл бұрын
Control arm starts at $80 ball joints start at $15, hmmmmm I wonder why people don't just throw unnecessary parts and money at small simple issues. You must be the kind of guy who goes in to do a simple job and just replaces everything you encounter, because why not.

why disassemble everything like that just for the ball joint??? you just have to disassemble the table completely there are only three baults to unscrew it takes 15 minutes lol if you have the brakes and something else to change ok but not for the ball joint alone.

Would it be easier to replace completely the control arm and with ball joint?
@CharlesAndCars5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Would replace the entire arm if the price was close to that of the ball joint or the bushings in the control arm were bad.

I used to swear by Moog when they used to be high quality Japanese and American auto parts. Now it's all just 3 rate country BS. You find distributors selling the same parts Moog rebrands for like a 3rd the price. For Kia/Hyundai suspension parts we are all in luck. You can just score Ten9 parts for cheaper than Moog and Ten9 is Korean made OEM. Not that I'm ripping on the tech, I rebuilt my stabilizer with Moog but never again.
