"Cooking" a failed mac chip -can- help extend the functional life, but there are better ways to do this without an oven, which bakes all components, when you really only want to heat the failed GPU (or whichever chip failed). Here's some tips to make this repair last longer: 1. Use a heat gun instead of oven. A cheap heat gun is like $25. and very useful for other projects. - remove logic board and heat sink - clean off old thermal paste. once clean, use 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the residue before applying new paste. AND WEAR GLOVES. finger oils can cause overheating later, and that 99% iso alcohol can poison your skin. - You also need to clean the heat sink pads the same as you did the chips. - You need heat shields protecting nearby components. Even aluminum foil is better than nothing. isolate the part you want to "cook", shield the rest with 2-3 layers of foil. - set gun on low, spend 2-3 minutes warming up the chip and surrounding board. - set gun on high and heat the chip with gun nozzle about 2 inches above the chip, 30-45 seconds from one angle, then another angle (straight down, then 45 degrees from each side), repeat for 3-5 minutes. don't let it cool, make sure the heat is never removed for more than a few seconds (to change position) til you're done. - watch for color change on the chip surface and surrounding board. "rainbowing" is normal (and means you're close to temp goal), but if anything starts to brown, blacken or smoke, pull back immediately. - if you have a laser thermometer, use it with your free hand to monitor temp. your goal is to reach 220 celsius on center of chip. 2. Always ground yourself when touching ram, logic boards, etc. Either grounding strap on wrist or at least touch a plugged in power cable every time before you touch the component. 3. try not to move the board during heating. once you start heating the GPU (or CPU, etc), DO NOT JAR, or FLIP IT OVER. You are risking the chip drifting on its solder bed. Heat from different angles, move the heat source, not the component. 4. take detailed notes of your repair attempt. if it fails, try again, with longer heat cycle. BONUS TIP: Use a ice cube tray to hold the dozens of screws you're removing. pay attention to the location you pulled it from and label each cube cubby so you know what goes where when re-assembling this bitch. BONUS TIP 2: While you're in there, clean those nasty fans, you dirty fuck. These steps will help prolong the longevity of your repair, allowing your mac to last longer. good luck.

Hi, I wonder if you can help me with this, Jeph. I have a 15" Macbook Pro 2011. Its graphic chip failed three years ago and I got the motherboard changed (apple replaced it for free as there was a replacement programme). The graphics chip has failed again this week. I mean, when I boot it up the apple logo can be seen. Once it reaches the point where it does that graphic switching to the AMD chip, just before the login screen, it goes blank and white or blue. Do you think I can do anything about it? Does a reapplication of thermal paste enable me to salvage this laptop? Or is the graphics chip already fried?

Nivedan Mangalesh Wow, very detailed! I like the idea of the heat gun focussed in the one area vs baking the while logic board. I reballed (resoldered) my late 2011 MBP about a year ago. The shop I took it to removed the original solder and put on a different kind. The service either came with a 6month or 1 year warranty, I forget. They also told me that my graphics card was a little damaged, but was still totally useable. The solder just got onto it. Now a year later I think I am experiencing the graphics card giving me issues. I have to wait until tomorrow to see what the diagnosis is. With that said I was told by the shop that this is fairly common with laptops. That laptops dont have the same ventilation capabilities as that if a desktop. He pointed to a Mac Pro tower, back to my Macbook Pro and said "They pretty much cram all that that into this. More ventilation with the tower." Dont get suckered into Appple telling you you need a $500+ logic board from them. That solder will just fail. I should have maybe spent another $50 and had the shop replace my graphics card, maybe I would be having this 2nd visit. I will update this post as soon as I get this figured out for the second go around.

You should NOT take the board out of the oven like that! If you bump it even slightly, you run a HUGE risk of displacing numerous chips throughout the board that have all had their solder melted. Just turn off the oven, open the door, and let it sit!

Fantastic! Bit worried about doing it! My September 2011 15" MacBook Pro finally died last September (2018) and various trips and enquiries to repair shops proved fruitless. It was on PC Worlds "Do not repair" listing. It was put in a drawer and forgotten. So with nothing to loose I watched your excellent Video, crossed my fingers and went for it! Only observation is you skip through the removal of the ribbon cables a bit fast, so it was a step in the dark. The fan ones just pull up to release and I had a bit of a game trying to slide them out horizontally and damaged them a bit. A few of the ribbon cables are a bit fiddly but now I'm an expert! In the oven it went for 7 mins at 370 deg F (I had a temperature gauge in there so it was dead on) your heart beats faster when you do that. Put it all back together with the paste and Voila! A new one is currently £2600. It's working perfectly now so thanks mate! I'm writing this on my rescued machine, back from the dead an hour ago! There is no feeling quite like it when you switch it on and it works! Great Video, You and KZbin saved me a ton of money so thanks again. Everything is there, I didn't bake it all away and when it fired up even the Chrome remembered what I was doing when it died. If you are reading this with a dead Mac and wondering if it works - yes it does! Absolutely!! Just do what the Video says and it will be fine. If it dies again I'll do it again (it's easy now) and dine on baked Apple! My only gripe is why didn't I hear about the Apple recall which I understand they did. I'm in the UK which is where I bought it from the Apple shop, so they were aware of me and what I had. I love Apple products but this initially left me doubting my loyalty by not offering to fix what they knew was a built in problem for their loyal customers. Steve Jobs would have frowned on that I think. Thanks again for doing the video.

Yeah, I bought mine (exactly like yours) back in 2011 and had it serviced by Apple around 3 years later. They "fixed" it by taking out my 16GB RAM and replacing it with original spec of 4GB. I ended up putting my 16GB back in and has worked flawlessly until about two weeks ago. It's a dinosaur anyway so I'm going to end up getting a new one. The problem is the 16" version starts at $2400! Sheesh.

dosdude1 has a software fix that worked for me, and many others that allows the machine to be used in 2025. I have specific uses for my 17" that still makes it desirable over later models that had systems and ports removed, as well as older software compatibility. If you just want general purpose computing, get an M series, but once the stupid AMD GPU is bypassed the machine still works great.

Did it work for three years then fail? I ask because I experienced something traumatic and I wonder if anybody here in the comments section also had this happen to them? I bought a 2010 Macbook Pro brand new in 2010. The logic board failed one month into ownership! I was doing light tasks like Microsoft Office since it was a school laptop. The Apple store "replaced" my logic board with another one and it functioned worse than when I brought it in. So my laptop actually stood gathering dust for 9 years until recently I gave it to Goodwill so they can recycle the Aluminum for something more functional like a Coca Cola can that can bring somebody joy. Anyone here ever receive any compensation without buying Apple Care? I heard that Apple Store's gave people 2011 models after 3 logic board swaps for those who had Apple Care. I was screwed out of over 2 grand for a dead paperweight and that is why even if newer laptops from Apple might be more reliable, I have not purchased another Apple product since 2010.

I did this 3-4 years ago after Apple had "fixed" my 2011 15" Macbook *twice* under their recall. That Macbook is still running strong, it's my daily driver. There is some debate as to whether the oven does the trick, or just replacing the thermal schmoo is the real solution. I saw an article linked in Apple's forums that said they had a bad batch of schmoo, so who really knows? All I know is the oven plus new schmoo (Arctic MX-4 for me) does the trick; it's one or the other or both. I'm in the process of doing another one at this moment. Just came out of the oven. We shall see.

This is a bandaid on a broken leg. The reason this fails is due to solder connections under the flip chip die. The solder under there is very small and encased in a hardened underfill. When you "Warm" the underfill it flexes ever so slightly. Thus allowing the chip to make contact (Not always sometimes this wont even work) with the solder points on the substrate the die sits on. This is why this only will work for a little bit then fail again. Because you arent actually fixing the issue. Also lead free solder melts at 220-225*C the oven isnt even set high enough to melt the solder.

Apple Macbook Pro Late 2011 developed logic board issues. Diagnostic performed by MicroCenter - Apple authorized repair center - they could not boot into anything. A refurbished logic board from a 3rd party would have cost one thousand, and this GPU issue would still be outstanding issue simply postponed.... Apple does not make parts for these computers as they are considered vintage. I tried HotshotTek oven bake method and surprisingly I was able to boot correctly. This is a temporary fix though. I will research how to disable the dedicated AMD GPU as that seems to be the issue with these Boards, preventing the computer from booting up. So if you cannot boot up, you can get a diagnostic done from MicroCenter for 40 bucks then when you are sure its the logic board, try HotshotTek Oven bake method to fix your logic board. There is nothing to lose and much to gain. At least you will buy some time until you can get a new machine.The whole thing took me about 8 hours - disassembly, documentation, cleaning, baking and re-assembly. Documentation is important because it helps when you are re-assembling and connecting back about 16 ribbons total on the board

If I disable the GPU, will that take up a considerable amount more processing power? I use my old MacBook for music production, and it's just started having symptoms of GPU failure. If I disable the GPU, will I have a hard time running CPU heavy programs like Logic Pro X?
@BenWeeks
@BenWeeks 6 жыл бұрын
No you should be ok. GPU is just for things like video editing or 3d games.The CPU is managing the load for Logic anyway. It's similar to after effects in that way. Processor and ram are the components it uses. You can check Logic's recommended specs to confirm.

I’m not really expecting you (crazy tech dude) to know the answer to this question but someone reading this might. My understanding is that the solder used to attach this chip to the board is the issue, not the chip itself. I find it odd that this one connection out of hundreds of thousands of similar connections on every motherboard would have the wrong solder applied. I would guess that the chips come pre tinned for installation and that would answer that. That being said, why can’t the existing solder be removed and the chip reattached with the correct solder thereby making a permanent fix? I’ve seen videos where people remove the chip and then make tiny little jump wires that serve to bypass the chip (one of many methods at this point) so, besides requiring expert soldering skills and the equipment needed for the job, it’s not as if it is physically impossible. Anyone have input on this, possibly what kind of solder should have been used? thank you!

@BenWeeks
@BenWeeks 6 жыл бұрын
Battery is not too expensive. I had mine replaced though you can do it yourself easily. I think the part is about $50. The GPU has a life span, eventually it'll burn out. I understand the GPU on this model has internal problems that shorten the lifespan. But mine died while playing a first person shooter at a high detail setting. So it died perhaps in part due to heat. But yeah, sell it for parts if you like.

Temporary repair only. You HAVE TO switch to integrated Intel graphics (100% fix). It doesn't take long, there are KZbin step by step tutorials on how to. BTW, as you cooked the shit out of the logic board, thermal paste has to replaced on the CPU and GPU.

Anyway, can I do this fix now and then repeat it in the future if needed? The laptop is still fast and works brilliantly!!
