This is a very good idea at a basic level. He is trying to grasp the essence of life and meaning and he almost grasps it but he slips in and out of real comprehension because of his adherence to Socratic dialectic which is a Parmenedes dependence on being as a description of the world. This is is wedded to the concept of statis, things and Aristotelian-like categories which unnaturally freeze everything. He talks about another frozen concept; "existance", a weak word in his presentation because even the Classical Greeks had no concept of existance, only of "what is". The Iliad is not meant as a book! "Existance" is an alien concept here. Surely the one thing anyone can appreciate from the Iliad is that it is based upon becoming ; a concept far better understood by Protagoras and Heraclitus and a better concept for understanding the Greek gods. You will notice from the Iliad that even Zeus is subject to fate. To appreciate the Iliad, you must understand that this was a song, a living thing handed down from our forefathers which moulded itself through the vageries of generational memory: the Iliad was meant as a performance, an emotional event that triggered recognition in its hearers and this is why the Protagoran concept of becoming is better suited.
