Quick Video on how to replace the rear brake pads on the 1st Generation Ford fusion! Very easy and quick job. There are other steps I could have taken such as replacing the rotors as well but I was instructed not to as this car was being sold the next day. I will have a video on how to replace the rear brakes coming up in a couple days as well!

If you have electronic rear emergency brakes on a 2016 ford fusion you are not going to be able to just screw the caliper piston in all the way. You must put the car into "emergency brake maintenance mode" to do this watch this video. 2016 Ford Fusion rear brakes with EPB. This guy saved my butt.

Many people don't know, ford implemented a brake maintenance mode for the rear brakes, theres no need for that tool or any tool, KZbin how to turn it on, and the piston can be pushed down with your thumbs, makes life incredibly easy!

Useful video. Bought disc tool for $13. Didn’t need it. Learned from comments to use Ford Service Mode. That put the electric parking brake in a state where a gentle squeeze with a c-clamp easily compressed the caliper plunger. First side took 3 hours. Second side 10 minutes.

Make sure to put it in brake maintenance mode before taking off the wheels and always remember to lube those “caliper guides”, That’s the main reason the brakes go out so fast
@WheresWaldo05
@WheresWaldo05 2 жыл бұрын
The main reason brake pads wear out fast is due to buying aftermarket brake pads that wear out at best 50% of the stock/oem brake pads life capacity. Also if the rotors have defects in them. And lastly the caliper cylinders sticking so the pads are always or partially engaged.

We have a 2018 Fusion and the caliper bolts are driven with a 7mm hex socket. Are you certain yours are T-45? They're both hex, but if you use a Torx on a hex head you might end up rounded it out since there's less contact area.

I had to have some work done on my 2015 Ford Fusion and was told my rear brakes had about 3mm left on them. They said that they would repair it for $475.00 but I told them I would wait a little while. I feel confident after watching your video to do it myself, but I want to change out the rotors as the originals are a little warped. My question is, what is that tool you had to screw the piston back in and where can I get one. The shop also said the car had to be put in a service brake mode...is this true and if so, how is this done without a computer? Thanks for any answers.

Henry Ford believed in keeping things simple, so anyone could fix their Ford themselves. I will never buy another new FORD.

You do not want to screw in the rear caliper piston on a ford car, ford says do not screw in caliper piston. On a Ford with an electric parking brake per Ford you need to place car in brake maintenance mode, a very simple process no special equipment required. Once you do that the rear caliper piston is easily compressed even by hand or with screwdriver or small pry bar. If you’re going to make a how to video you should at least look at the ford service manual for the car. Lot’s of KZbin videos showing how to put you electric parking brake car into brake maintenance mode.

@@alonsomendoza424 For some reason putting it in maintenance mode didn't work either. Perhaps I didn't do it right. The free borrow program from Autozone for the special tools works well as long as some fool hasn't destroyed the tool. Anyway, got the best pads I could on sale/clearance from Rockauto and the whole job was $24 including brake grease. With the new pads there is no brake dust, makes cleaning the wheels better and it still stops hard as ever.

Dont you have to put the vehicle in parking brake maintenance mode in order to replace pads on 2013-2018 fusions. They say the piston can just be pushed in when the that service mode or lined up if you have to for the pin hole

Dan McCoy I have done many rear brake jobs on this same car. Never put them in any service mode. If you have read that it’s required then by all means go for it. This video is not the Bible. It will give people an overall idea as to what they are in for. I will check the link. However this method has worked a minimum 20 times so far without an issue.

Is this necessary only when changing the rear pads what about the front too?

So I could only get the piston to go back in 6 or 8 turns , leaves me 1/4 inch short of getting new pads on. Any help.

I'm curious, does disconnecting the EPB plug make it so you do not have to put the vehicle into maintenance mode as it would no longer be electronically connected to the wiring system? Thanks. Peace, John

John Hutchison Hi John. Actually as you will have noticed in the film, I did not put the car in maintenance mode. I simply used the tool mentioned (the brake cube tool) to spin the piston back into the caliper. I did NOT have the brake in the on position. I have it turned OFF in this video.

At 0:57 the EPB did get disconnected, correct? Or did you just move the wires out of your way? Several other videos make it seem like the maintenance mode needs to happen or all hell could "brake" loose (pun intended) It would seem that if the EPB wiring was unplugged, there would be no chance of it engaging during the pad/rotor change process. Thanks! Peace, John

John Hutchison sorry for the delayed response. At 0:57 I did just move the wire to the side as I stated. I did not disconnect the wire.

Hi! May I know what is the brand of the cube piston tool you used to push the caliper back, please? I saw few of them on online market but not sure which one would fit Ford Fusion. Thanks in advance!

I do not believe that's the correct procedure. You need to put the vehicle is in "Maintenance Mode" and it will allow the pistons to be pushed in (not screwed in). At least that's what Ford's procedure says. When you're done, you take the vehicle out of maintenance mode and the parking brake will work normally.
