In this video we will be covering the testing of an output solenoid (purge valve) P0443, wiring and the computer driver. We were surprised by what we found and ultimately what we did to fix the problem. Special thanks to my daughter May for helping dad with the cameras!

I would recommend a flyback diode on that chassis grounded solenoid. That protects the switching transistor from spikes when the circuit opens.
@annaplojharova1400
@annaplojharova1400 2 жыл бұрын
The transistor has clamping circuit designed to handle the flyback (you could rest assured it is not the transistor going into breakdown, but it is really an active circuit controlling the transistor the way to control the flyback voltage), there is no need to add anything extra there. To the contrary, adding a diode is not a good idea, as it may mess up some of the diagnostics.

@patrickzambori473
@patrickzambori473 2 жыл бұрын
Because the module is providing both power and ground, excessive current caused by a shorted solenoid coil will burn out the weakest point in the circuit. I suspect the initial failure was a shorted solenoid, which burned out the ground path, then the solenoid got replaced on the first repair attempt, before the dealership got their hands on it.

Thank you for uploading another great vid. I really like these 40mins or longer videos where i can pick up the nitty gritty stuff. Yesterday i diagnosed a "cranks but no start". As soon as i had the hood opened, i was hearing your voice echoing in my head like "Check for fuel, Check for spark". I answered "ok spark first" Pulled the coil and the plug out.. Cranked the engine- no spark.. It was a coil on plug btw. Is it the plug or is it the coil? "Do i go left or do i go right" Then i pulled my spark tester which i bought after i saw you using it. It was the vid were as soon as you turn the key on the coil was firing immediately. So i stuffed the spark tester into the coil and the other end on ground... Not on the battery cause you said it may cause the battery to explode... Cranked the engine over.. and there was spark... So coil was good and all three spark plugs were busted.. It took me lest than 10mins to diagnose. Replaced all three plugs . Cranked it. Engine starts. And i said "We're done"

I was wondering if that computer ground side would monitor when it gets commanded during a test drive. Like you said, different code most likely. Curious to how that turns out. Hey, Another thought on the P0300 is, maybe that computer ground momentarily came back to life and did the flood work and caused that shutter/misfire the customer experienced. (Hmm..) Just a thought. 😉 Totally agree with you on supplying the ground to the purge. Would have done the same as well. Save that money bro. Lol Anyways, I saw the to be continued so I bet there's an update to the case study, especially on the purge repair. Look forward to seeing it and more in 2022. Great video, Paul and nice camera work, May! I used to work at Audi. We would totally be authorized to run a bypass/overlay wire in this situation. I'm pretty sure that the entire Volkswagen Group publishes information on how to do it correctly. They even do overlays on Porsches and Bentleys! Either Chrysler corporate doesn't approve that type of repair, which I doubt, or that dealership just wants to sell an expensive PCM.
@jeffcompton6937
@jeffcompton6937 2 жыл бұрын
Firstly once the car is out of factory warranty it's no longer a corporate decision. Dealerships can make more decisions on what constitutes an approved repair. So if they chose to not do the ground overlay its because the tech didn't realize it would remedy the dtc or because from a liability standpoint if that repair was successful and the ecm then had another failure point guess what. The Karen customers of today would be wanting that repair refunded. This is why lots of dealers wont give customers this option because when you're already so pissed about having to pay for repairs you'll never appreciate a cheaper alternative that has some risk. That's why. When the consumers attitude changes so cam the procedure

Bravo! Great video. EMC, electromagnetic compatibility is an aspect of modern vehicles electronics that is not often considered out on the job. EMC testing is done at the factory to insure that the vehicle's systems do not interfere with each other by keeping the integrity of all the systems signaling, control and communication circuits. Modern engine I/O controls have a return line back to the computer to minimize EM interference aka noise. The load return line allows EM field cancellation (noise) all the way back to the computer where it is grounded. However some loads do not require this kind of treatment and aren't designed with a return conductor. Now will the DEVICE in question work properly if the return line is bypassed at the device? That depends on if and how the PCM detects the output voltage/current to the device. Most PCMs detection circuits are direct reading and could be implemented at the supply side or return side, It is simpler to do so at the return side but there is a catch. First you cannot observe the current supplied by source, you only observe the current that returns at the return point, so the computer cannot reliably detect a short circuit. Second, additional consideration has to be given to ground potential transients and noise coupling. There is a good chance that your application has the detection circuit located at the supply side because it is desirable to addresses both limitations described above. So the bypass modification allows the DEVICE to work, what about EMC on the modified circuit? That is the real question....time will tell. My only advise would be to do the bypass at the computer end of the line vs doing it at the device end of the line un.

Happy New Year and God bless you and your family. As to grounding externally. If this is my 20 year old daughters car with 149,000 miles on it then in my book this is a good fix because it doesn’t have another 150,000 more miles left in it. I do agree that a diode in the ground wire could add protection and is a good idea. But with an older vehicle with higher miles, sometimes this is the best answer for a problem. If it had 70,000 to 80,000 miles then yeah, put a computer in after all other problems have been confirmed. There is a time and place for everything. This was right in my book. Love ya in the Lord Paul. Great content and thank you for what you do.

A couple of points about Chryslers. (1) Checking to see if it's a power or ground side control, on older Chryslers that ground side switched, You will only have power for a few seconds when switching key on. With out a RPM signal it will de-energize ASD relay which was suppling the 12v. So if you're checking after a few seconds, you will have nothing on both terminals. (2) I'm really surprised you didn't check all computer grounds at PCM. Chrysler has many any you could be missing one of them and vehicle still runs. It uses that ground to supply ground to the components.
@jameswasher3938
@jameswasher3938 2 жыл бұрын
Happy New Year Paul. One question. Back in the old days, you always had us checking powers and grounds at the PCM. Just wondering if the 'missing' ground here could have anything to do with a bad ground at the PCM. Seems unlikely that it would have a separate ground for just this one circuit. You've really got me wondering why it would power side switch this thing. The electronic design is much easier (at the transistor level) with ground side switching. Oh well. Another of life's mysteries.

Consider that the floating (control ground) can be connected internally to the gate (or other terminal) of a transistor ... if the ground is hard wired completed and not floating a small bias current may be established ... like a small parasitic circuit bleed. This means the system device experiences a constant current across an internal transistor resistance (very very small voltage drop) ... hence the device sees power through it which means equates with wear and tear while not monitoring or doing other useful work.

Yall are awesome! Truly life changing. I wish I had found this channel years ago. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but I've changed multiple shops, jumped through countless hoops. I've been subjected to every form of, what they finally coined as since Trump got doused by CNN, gas lighting. Before the crackheads go apesht; I've only ever voted for one president and that was Obamas second term because the world needed it. Maybe not where any of you are but where I grew up and how I saw people treated growing up.. the world needed it. That and I found out he gave the go ahead on Osama while he was at a dinner party. Which to mean was a pinpoint to the source at the time.. At a Dinner Party. No one in possession of their own mind and person takes one source's side of any story and commits to action, much less reaction. We all saw what was happening. Made me distance myself from both parties. I mean lieing against my character, education, every kind of personal attack and then some to slander any kind of potential or abilities. The schools around here suck. I know because I'm the one that was training the kids out of the school programs. We all just had to teach eachother and then filter out the setups and glass ceilings from lead techs and crooked GMs. The world didn't turn on me until I filed legitimation and refused, to this day, to walk away. I've even stopped getting arrested, as often, and I've never been so hated for existing. Guarantee if I walked away, the world would be given back to me on a silver platter. Yall don't ever have to defend anything to anyone. The fact that yall are doing this for the .. P l a n e t is all anyone who knows and lives the truth will ever need. For anyone else, just change the channel. You can't please em all and the more you try the more they burry you with anything you give to them. Thankyou. For a lifetime, my sons, of bs and upward battles and barriers. Thankyou

I wonder if the driveability concern is from the computer randomly being able to reconnect that ground and it floods the engine with fuel vapors then spiking the O2 sensor and also causing the random misfire code. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just my two cents.

That was my suspicion for sure! But from memory that O2 looked like crap too, and another scenario is the O2 starts creating some huge, abnormal swings in fuel trim and there is your misfire code too
