The Dodge Durango and this CX-9 are at the top of my list.

If I were in the market for a 7-seater people-mover I'd be all over the CX-9. Since I don't have those needs at the moment I ended up with a '14 Forester and love it :) Keep up the good work, guys.

We returned it because it had damage on the front, and we didn't want to be held responsible, and the tire pressure light was blinking, and we didn't want to risk it, driving long distance. But the engine was amazingly smooth, and quiet, and I honestly had a hard time hearing whether or not the car started. Good cargo area, nice back seat space, quiet at higher speeds. Seems like a very practical SUV!

I cannot recommend the Pilot as I have not driven one. The CX-9 is a worthy choice and I would compare it with the KIA Sorento 7-passenger model and, perhaps the Nissan Pathfinder. My pick would still be the CX-9.

We don't exclude it. We just don't have it in the Denver Press Fleet. We will be happy to review it but that's up to Dodge and not us.

I think they are about to give the Journey a serious update. If that's the case, they will (most likely) wait until the newest version is available. The last one I drove was a 2012 back in 2011. I did write an article about the rumored 2014/15 Dodge Journey SRT6. It's on the TFLCar website.

Good Off Road test. What do you think is better for off road: Highlander or the CX-9?

Nathan -- what is your favorite of the 3-row crossover segment? (This is an extremely competitive segment -- this Mazda CX-9, Chevy Traverse/GMC Acadia, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe).
@thecarexpert2111 жыл бұрын
Just had one of these as a rental in Colorado. Only had it for 20 min, then returned it.
@95thRiflesOCI11 жыл бұрын
Highlander is a full time 4wd so constant 50/50 split to 4 wheels unless u get the hybrid version then its an awd system. Highlander has better approach angle and departure (29 / 24) compare to cx-9 its around (16/21). Both have similar ground clearance.

Nathan, what do you think of the CX-9 for daily dirt road travel? We live on a gravel/dirt road and I do home healthcare so I am on many dirt roads and crazy driveways daily. I currently own a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe that has not held up well on our roads and a 2008 Honda Civic that has done very well. Any other suggestions for replacing my Santa Fe in these driving conditions? Looking at the Pathfinder, CX-9 and Pilot.

I have a Mazda CX 9 and LOV IT , if you haven't driven one. Then you don't have an opinion!! Its not to small for me in fact everyone that is a passenger that I ve had in my car comments on how roomy it is. I guess if you are 6' 4 it would be small for you! lol !!

Appreciate the response, we own a 2013 and love it. Best bang for the buck, not really sure why it isn't as popular in the States. I'll shoot Dodge/Ralph a tweet and see if they would be willing to?
@NathanDAdlen11 жыл бұрын
Hi Amber, these are all good choices. The CX-9 has a rather tight suspension and, with the big wheels, the ride might not be as compliant as the Pathfinder (which has a very cushy ride). I can't recommend the Pilot as I have not driven the new one. I might suggest the Chevrolet Traverse/GMC Acadia as they have a supple ride. The Toyota Highlander and Dodge Durango do well in gravel too.

Great review Nathan! I would love a Journey SRT6. But I don't agree completely, most recent rumor has it that the Journey architecture will be based on the Dart/new Cherokee to be built at Sterling Heights nearer to Jan. 2016. Google allpar's "journey-moving-to-sterling-heights" article!
@95thRiflesOCI11 жыл бұрын
In 2012 / 2011 it was only #3 under Ford escape and Honda CRV in Canada and when you include America + Canada, it only made it to #16 out of all suv's sold in 2012. I also don't think the Dodge Journey is worthy of being mentioned as its base price is so low but includes nothing. Have to step up to a fully loaded one at around 25k+

From Chrysler: The Dodge Journey is Canada’s number 1 selling crossover (1) and the lowest-priced mid-sized crossover (2) (1) Based on R. L. Polk Canada, Inc. May 2008 to August 2012 Canadian Total NVR data for Chrysler Cross-Over Segments. Start date based on the marketing launch commencing May 2008. (2) Based on Ward's 2013 Middle Cross Utility segmentation. Excludes other Chrysler Group LLC vehicles. 25k+ is your opinion. Fact: the Journey won “Best New SUV-CUV under $35,000” in 2012. :)

Thats a street car, it is far from being a good car for off road. That car is suffering with that off road test. Just look at the front end, it doenst have attack angle. The bumper is just like a sedan/family van bumper. It can do some extremely light off road, as long as the terrain is flat and it doesnt have approach a hill or crossing a creek or some water stream.
@95thRiflesOCI11 жыл бұрын
From goodcarbadcardotc0m: since 2009 the Dodge Jouney has been outsold by its smaller competitors even tho it offers a larger SUV for a cheaper price so how can you claim its a best selling suv when people would still buy a small crossover or suv instead of this larger one. Simple, the Jouney has low maximum cargo capacity, it is also the longer then a Highlander yet its 3rd row is the worst in the "class." Reliablity? Its probably on par with the koreans. Midsize suv with utlity of a small suv.

I have a Mazda 2012 that spontaneously stalls while decelerating. It also stalls predictably on an incline. Mazda corporation has stated "the stalling on an incline is a characteristic of all CX-9 Models" and are not willing to fix it. Please watch this video of a brand new (loaner from the dealer while they looked at my CX-9) 2013 CX-9 (125 miles on it) this is the "characteristic" I am referring to. Find Video on YouTUBE Search Mazda Cx-9 Do Not Buy! They Stall to see video
