Totally agree with everything that was said about this bike. I took one out recently on a test ride...what an experience. So good in fact that that I have placed an order for one. Great review of a "game changing" bike!

Dear AutoTrader and Jon Quirk, this is a wicked overall review with gorgeous videography and of course quite informative, has been influential in making this one of my all-time favorite super bikes. By any chance, what are the two songs... first one: 0:58-2:16, and second one: 2:16-2:30? Great stuff!

"3 levels of ABS and 8 levels of traction control that I can adjust simply by rolling off the throttle" is hyperbolic and not exactly true (although, technically, rolling off the throttle is required to effect the riding mode change). It needs more clarification, that the only changeable thing on the fly is the 3 x riding modes. To adjust the TC and ABS within each riding mode, one must not be moving.

How do you ride sportsbikes on the street? Just test rode Panigale 899 and Daytona 675 and ended up having a severe lower back pain and neck strain due to the aggressive forward leaning position. I'll stick with my naked Street Triple R.

I have a HP4 and I want to buy a V-Twin. I think this is a good one to go for considering the price difference between the 899 and the 1199 R (which I am considering as well)
@DarwinAllen
@DarwinAllen 10 жыл бұрын
The R isn't worth the money imo. Get either the base or the S. Same engine on all trim levels - step up the the S if you want the electronically adjustable suspension. The rest is just bolt-ons, esthetics, and some carbon fiber / lighter pieces for the most part. Also, if you're used to an HP4 the 899 will feel underpowered.

I'm stuck between this 899 or a daytona 675r as my bike upgrade choice... i would use it mostly for street and fun riding on weekends and nice weather, not my primary vehicle. Also like the idea of taking it to the track sometime. Alot of people are saying the 899 would be better for street riding because of the daytona's riding position but I love everything about the Daytona (except for the looks which the 899 wins in that department). Also not a huge fan of the 899 sound compared to the daytona, is this ducati just a much better choice than the daytona- would I get the daytona and regret my purchase because of how uncomfortable it is? Could anyone comment on what would be a better choice?

Great review, can you please comment on the low to mid-range torque for around town. I've heard you have to keep it revved pretty high, is this true? Please do more reviews, how about the Diavel. Thank you.
@JonQuirkUK
@JonQuirkUK 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Antonio, thanks for your comments. You'll have absolutely no issues on low to mid-range performance with the 848. When you're in town, you'll more likely feel the bike's almost feral energy - like a Ferrari road car, this bike can happily do town work, but it really feels so much more comfortable at higher speeds. If you're going to do a lot of town work, perhaps the riding position and performance of the Diavel or Hypermotard may be better suited? Will keep you posted when we get a 2014 Diavel in for testing! Thanks for your support, J

No. Sure depends always how you use your brain. But use these bikes only on the road it is a pity.. not takes full advantage and you tire easily. Take a bike "right".. driving .. learn step by step. Ps Obviously it's just a personal opinion (but given from years of experience and many broken bones lol)

If you missed this in this review, 'oh wait, these weren't mentioned..." Ducati sport bikes are rolling barbeques. It is sad to see people's dreams dashed within an hour of rolling out of the dealer show room. Specially if they used reviews like this to help with their purchase decision. Ducs simply suck on the street unless you only ride at 3 o'clock in the morning in desserted frontier towns... The heat that billows onto the rider ruins the experience. Add to that gearing that doesn't work on the street, clutch slaves that require death grip and Engine mapping that is nonexisting below 3000 RPM so this review begs the questionI, "did you do anything except ride some twisty road for 15 minutes. Maybe on the track you can live with it, but certainly not on the road. And the fact that reviewers and testers like this site completely obscure these deal-breaking flaws does a great disservice to their intended audience. People rely on these reviews to help inform a decision. Ducati owners owners spend their post-purchase lives scouring the Internet for answers, lamenting the fact that there aren't any and wrapping their exhausts as a final act of futility. If you leave you live in or near an urban Center, drive your new Ducati directly into your living room where it will give you the most pleasure. I have owned two high-performance Ducatis, have toured the factory and have bought the swag…The dream literally up in flames ...

wolfslife21 I would recommend a standard 1199 panigale. I have a 2013 version in white which I picked up second hand with 3300kms cheaper than a new 899 on road. Power delivery is still smooth and the extra power and ultra light weight will mean you wont be wanting for more....especially since you're coming from an R1. A good mod is to change the rear sprocket to a 41 tooth......the same as the Panigale R to give it extra punch as the standard 39 tooth is too long. You can then spend money on customising and still have heaps left over.

Very similar in handling, but engine response is very different. The 899 engine sounds/feels very similar to any other parallel twin although the frame absorbs a lot of the vibration. Where as i felt that the 675r i rode was very smooth with delivery. Surprisingly the 899 seat is much more comfortable for me ( 6'1 220Ibs) over the 675r seat, which is a bit stiffer. The 899 rear suspension feels a set for someone that weighs around 150-170Ibs, but actually works better for me because it doesn't feel as stiff and resets over bumps a lot smoother than what my friend; who is much smaller than me, stated it felt like. The handle bars and rake is actually much more relaxed than the 675r, once you sit down on it. I bought the 899 over the 675r to say the least.

Am I the only one looking at this and saying "holy shit that bike looks like a pain in the ass to ride?" Look at the painful expression on the riders' face, the hunched-over riding position and all the camera-shake while riding on what looks to be a pretty-smooth English road. That's 2 minutes of "why you shouldn't buy and ride a motorcycle in England". The bike sounds great, though ;) ...but seriously what is with all the push for this bike even for people who have no desire to actually buy and ride a motorcycle?

Ducati exhaust sound typically cannot be recorded properly. There is a large amount of bass in the sound and the sound spectrum is so wide that typical mic cannot capture the whole range correctly. Thus it always sound weird in videos.
