Hello Allan. I just want to leave a piece of information here, when replacing this chain you will need to add a 3mm thick gasket sealant around the oil feed for the chain tensioner. If somehow the sealant gets to the oil feed hole, you will have a bad time. I inserted a drill bit to check if it's clear and I removed a chunk about half the hole diameter that could have issues for lubricating the chain and tensioner, so be advised!

I replaced the freewheel alternator. Replaced some bearing on the gearbox. Some bad song disappear... I suppose it is this chain+tensioner responsible of the problem. I'll replace it this week end. The cost of operation (chain kit, timing belt kit + water pump): 200€

I always change PROPER oil sooner than I should but even though my timing chain became louder for the last year =( Maybe I did something wrong or something else is the reason. Some people say that driving at too high speed on highways can cause issue with this Timing Chain.

I have used Ford oem oil and changed it in time. But now I wonder how much km's will that chain take? I wonder if it's the chain or tappets that make some noise when it's still cold engine...

Thank you very much for this movie Alan. I wonder what could be the reason of noisy chain other than improper oil changes intervals. Is it always needed to replace this chain? I read about some situations when replacing this chain ( and surroundings ) didn't help! Maybe its enough to adjust something somewhere? ( e.g. improper tensor regulation ) I bough 2014 MK4 DW10C 2.0 163 hp some months ago. It has 60 kkm now. I've done 10 kkm myself. Oil was changed properly ( Ford Formula F 5W30 recommended by Ford service to this engine ). I just don't believe I have this issue after 60 kkm. I have also some vibrations in the cabin on idle only when its warm - but I guess Its something else. Thanks in advance for your advice ...

@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi, it may have had poor oil changes before you got the car and the damage was almost done already....there are no adjustments..it would be best to fit new chain and tensioner and check oil way into tensioner from cylinder head is clear. the vibration from cabin...try holding the air conditioner pipes where they go through the bulkhead into the car...if that stops it just insulate the pipes better

I had a look at your other video about replacing the valve spring and thought "while I'm in there shouldn't it be a good idea to change all the valve seals at this mileage?" What would you do, change them or leave them alone? Of course without removing the head. I would hate to have to redo the work one year later because the car starts eating oil through those...

Hi Alan, I was wondering whether you could comment on an observation I made yesterday. I have this exact D4204T lump in my 2005 Volvo S40 2.0D, 150,000 miles and has been trouble free for the last 12years since I've owned it, but during oil changes I've manged to strip the sump plug many times .. gone up gradually from M14 to M17 in size, but it always kept dripping and making a mess on the undertray, so I decided to replace the whole sump.. So I took it off yesterday, and while I was at it, I had an "investigative" look around and noticed that the chain driving the oil pump had slack, I could push in the middle section with my finger about 3 cm, I couldn't pull it of the oil pump sprocket but it was really close. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe both the chain has stretched, and the oil pump sprocket is wearing out, surely no drive chain should have so much slack in it? But my main Q is: if I were to feel adventurous, how big of a PITA is it to replace the oil pump and chain on the Jonah engine? I can see, that the chain is driven off the crankshaft, so does that mean that it will be a total engine tear down? I would look it up in VIDA but my cracked licence seems to have been provoked 🤫 .. haven't needed it for a long time and now I just can't log in 😑
@alan4x
@alan4x 3 жыл бұрын
hi .. those oil pump chains are very slack, i know it don't make sense but they are all slack as there is no tensioner. if you did want to change it you would need to remove the sandwich section bolted to the bottom of the engine block

@ghassanalfarra8935 3 жыл бұрын
@@alan4x Thank you very much Alan, much appreciated! .. Since it's ment to be that way then I guess I'll leave it as it is then, no point in dropping the oil sump a second time and splitting the engine from below for no reason. Keep up the good work, and keep those videos coming! 😊👍

Hi, my question is which is the best oil for this car, i've got a 2007 mk4 mondeo but the oil that ford recomend for this engine is not good for particle filters so i decide to put castrol 5/40 C3 i think, im not sure could be is c2 i dont remember now but..im not sure if its the best for my engine
@radulescu21
@radulescu21 4 жыл бұрын
The correct oil for this engine is A5. I know french cars with same engine use C3 wich is lower ash. But really, I don't think Ford were stupid enough to not know what oil is best for them. But, from all I've learned about C3 and A5, is that C3 is indeed an oil aimed at emissions and A5 is better for the engine. So unless an engine is burning oil the A5 should be as good for the DPF but better for the engine. Just use A5, and if you care about the DPF, quality diesel and long drives for regeneration are the best things to do.

a lot will depend on whether the engine has had the correct oil changes at the right times but the chain guide wears and eventually breaks up causing a noisy chain. I recommend replacing that chain and guide at 200k miles but could go longer ..just keep an ear out for any chain noise...if the chain were to become loose you will hear it

Or only the chain? I do not what to spend a fortune for this car anymore... Chain is 30euros and tensioners around 70euros if this is a life time thing, may be this could still be good? if you were to replace the chain i would say definitely replace the tensioner as well. if your engine has had regular oil changes there is a good chance the chain is ok and does not need replacing at your mileage...we have these engines with far more miles and never replaced a chain.....usually if there is a problem with the chain or tensioner you will hear a noise from the chain area

Hi, Thanks for the videos they are very informative! I have a long story to explain. I apologize but I need help to resolve a long going issue. I have a 2008 mondeo MK4 2.0L Diesel engine. I have had a nightmare and looking for some expert help and advice. About 1 month ago I decided to get an oil leak looked at as a local garage investigated and advised it was the camshaft seal leaking oil and needed replacing and as oil had affected the timing belt and chain and water pump would need replacing. I was advised by the garage the time to do this would be approx 3.5 hrs but they were too busy to do the job that week. So here begins my nightmare! I decided not to wait until the next week when the garage was able to fix my car but instead I decided to use an online car mechanic service where a mobile mechanic comes to your house and does the job while your comfy at home and no need to leave your car all day at a garage and have to arrange a lift to leave it and pick it back up again. Sweet... I thought! A mobile mechanic came the next day after I booked the job online for a set amount of hours 3.5 hrs and cost to replace the timing belt and water pump along with the camshaft seal replacement. I was very nervous the whole time as the guy seemed to be on his phone an awful lot which I presume he was asking for help and that he had already been working on it for 4hrs the car still looked nowhere near fixed. The total time the guy took was 8hrs to complete this job. The mechanic turned the engine over and told me all was now fixed. This mechanic then proceeded to ask me to pay him more money for having working on the car longer than he should have done! I was gobsmaked and told him that I had already paid online the quoted price for the parts and labour time. The mechanic was visibly annoyed that I would not pay him more but left. The very next morning I drove my car off the drive for the first time and all seemed fine until less than 1/4 mile my car came to a sudden halt after all power on a busy dual carriageway! The car would not turn over and I had to get it recovered to my house so that I could get the mechanic to look at it again. I called the mechanic and left a message for him to urgently contact me and I also called the online mechanic company to advise what had happened. Nobody called me back after 4 hours I managed to get into touch with the mechanic who came to fix my car. This mechanic said it was nothing he had done and that it was another a different fault that had just occurred as a coincidence and that why should he come out anyway when I would not pay him more money! he then proceeded to give me a barrage of abuse saying how unjust I was not paying him more after he had worked on my car for so long! I contacted the online mobile mechanic service and gave them these same details as I have given here but you can not speak to anyone as it is online but can only message then and leave an online complaint and wait for the procedure. As it happened my complaint is also sent to the mechanic that came out and this company say I had to go through this mechanic to resolve the issue even when I advised them of what he said and that I had no trust in him. They said he has 48hrs to respond and come out again and after that if I still have a complaint they will arrange another mechanic to investigate in 3 days and all this time I have no car. I proceeded to contact another mobile mechanic to come to my car to investigate and fix hoping to get my car back on the road and get a refund for the previous work done by the other mechanic. A new mechanic came arranged by me and told me that it was a shoddy job done and that the previous mechanic had made numerous errors. Some of these errors were the fact he had not put any coolant in, there was plugs unplugged (I think for exhaust inlet?) something else was unplugged where had had jammed something in to stop the flywheel from moving, there he was still an oil leak and he was unsure of how reliable the work on the camshaft was completed. The new mechanic put coolant in and started the engine and got 100 yards before it stopped again. He put a computer on to diagnose and said an injector had also failed and needed replacing and that I would have to wait for a further 5 days to order one and comeback and replace it or he would go to scrap yard and get one for £60. So 3 days later still waiting I called the new mechanic and he said he could not get 1 injector but would only sell him the set of four. So I said ok do that just so I could get my car back on the road and £160 and another 2 days later the mechanic replaced the one faulty injector and I have now the other 3 not needed. The car seemed fine for a couple of weeks but I noticed still an oil leak and also I was losing coolant fast! I have since been to another reputable garage who say the coolant leak is coming from under the car and that to get to it it needs the exhaust re-moving which is a big job and hence incorporated a heavy cost and that they would need to strip the exhaust out which is seized and needs bolts cutting to get the part number of the leaking hose so they can ask if dealer has the part or not. Also the garage said I have diesel leaking from the camshaft! This could all take a week to order the part and repair with no car again that's if I'm lucky! So currently I have still an oil leak, diesel leak and water leak! Also no response from online mechanic company so no refund and compensation has been made! Sorry to anyone who endeavored to read all this story. I have no idea where to go with this or what advise I'm actually asking for. I'm sure to everyone it would Seems the car needs scrapping but I'm so reluctant to do as it was my father who passed away and has sentimental value to me. I also annoyed that apart form the initial oil leak, this car never let me down in four years and drove beautifully never missing a beat. After starting the process to have a timing chain and water pump replaced all this has occurred and I don't believe its all a coincidence!

Mr. Howatt. i have guestion, i have this same engine in my mondeo. I checked the servicebook and it has been used Castrol 5W-30 engine oil. I chanced engine oil and put Mobil 1 3000 5W-40 instead 5W-30 because the oil change time was prolonged and that was only oil i have my garage that time. So thinked i drive max 1500miles and do engine flush and put that same Castrol oil what it is been used. My guestion is, is this kinda thing save?

Hey Alan (or anyone else that might know) Is it possible to replace just the tensioner without going to the sheer effort required to replace the chain too? The chains rarely stretch beyond spec being so short, and the issues are usually related to the tensioner and guides. If possible, I'd like to just slip out the old tensioner and replace it with a new one, which should take an hour or two instead of 10!
@alan4x
@alan4x 22 күн бұрын
yes on the 2l Diesel engine in the video which is a 2007 engine you have to remove the plastic rocker cover then you can replace the tensioner without removing the chain

Awesome channel. I've got a strange problem on one of these - reassembling a 2009 Mondeo mk4 2.0 tdci after a timing belt failure and broken rockers. If I line the marks on the chain up as shown, I get BOTH inlet and exhaust valves opening at the same time. Really. The exhaust valve is in the correct place, but the inlet is miles out. Have you ever seen the chain sprocket spin on the camshaft? It seems tight now. I'm 110% sure the timing marks are correct and I've been sent for a drugs test :-) - Its hard to get a clear pic but it looks like my sprocket is timed differently to this one. Anyone seen this happen before?? Or can give me a pic of the inlet cam timing dot vs lobe position? Thanks heaps!!
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
if those chain sprockets are pressed onto the camshafts it is possible they could move..what were the symptoms of why did the cam belt fail....i have had the dog drive on the rear of the exhaust cam turn on the camshaft because the high pressure fuel pump locked/seized momentarily and caused it to. i have an engine with the cams and sprocket exposed so i can take a pic of the cam positions for you with the chain set up but i not at work till the new year

Thanks very much for your reply. The car has done 195km on the original belt and it is VERY worn, so I had assumed it was simply fair wear and tear and I wasn't suspicious of something seizing to cause it. The vac and hp fuel pump seem ok but not confirmed when running of course.... I've added 4x short videos of the timing and lobe positions - if you have a chance to compare with your engine once you're back in the shop and comment I'd be very grateful. Cheers!

It's a main belt driving the exhaust camshaft off the crankshaft. The inlet camshaft is driven by a chain linked to the exhaust camshaft. When the chain and tensioner wear, you get a rattling noise from the engine.
