( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 Toyota Tundra pickup is all new except for the engine choices. In this new video series of Holiday Road Trip reviews Roman drives the new Tundra from Denver, Colorado to Phoenix, Arizona to find out what it means to live with the new 1794 Edition of the 2014 Toyota Tundra. So how does the 2014 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition serve as a road trip companion? How does it drive on America's straight and seemingly never ending interstates and how does it do hauling a couple of dirt bikes?
Check out part 2 of this new road trip review series as Roman tell you the top three things he feels need improvement in the new Tundra.

Complaining about the fuel consumption of a gasoline V8 seems a bit odd, did you think that somehow it would miraculously make more horsepower with less fuel? The internal combustion motor is tapped out with the current tech available. You KNOW it doesn't cut cylinders out, you KNOW it's 5.7L...Come on guys, let's hear some valid complaints. Seats don't heat up fast enough......really?

Consumption can be reduced. Simple application of reduced cylinder firing or direct fuel injection (bit more complicated).

A truck is not unstoppable in icy conditions...don't get that into the head of buyers. I've seen far too many people with 4x4 in my state and it makes them cocky when they're driving on ice and they end up sliding around just as much as everyone with 2 wheel drive.

I love my 1794! The only reason nobody gets good gas mileage is because it takes off quick and smooth and its hard to let outta the pedal. Otherwise gas mileage isn't as bad. Can get 15 city. I keep mine around 11-12.

It does seem idiotic with all the new truck lineups coming out the next couple of years, that Toyota would stick with an almost 7 year old powertrain. That's one thing I don't like about this Tundra, it's basically the same as the last generation just with new sheet metal. Also, they need to move away from the open C-channel frame and stop riveting the cross members on it. Everyone else has a boxed and hydroformed frame. It's time Toyota moved out of the 90's.

I don’t know both of y’all sound like you’re complaining just to complain. I’ve owned this truck for over two years and have put 50k+ miles and it is the most comfortable truck you can take on a road trip. Seats feel great and I like how smooth the truck adapts to the different driving environments when you’re traveling in the winter from CA to TX.

Tesla has the best nav system since it uses Google maps and there is a delete route button! Wish other manufacturers could have an option saying "enable usage for navigation while drive" so the passenger could cancel or create a new route or the driver could do it (at their own risk)

I have a new platinum Tundra 4x4, traded a 2012 Tundra TRD 4x4 for it. I agree the seats are hard, but considering how long this trucks going to last I think they'll get broke in like boots. The ride is better, but still stiff. I tow a 22' Cobalt in the summer then nothing else. I read the manual and learned the entertainment/nav before I went on the road, but hey I build my own computers too. I have had both A 1998 Chevrolet and three Ford trucks. I've had three Tundras. Guess which two brands ended up in the shop? I'll take reliability and resale over worry every time. Never looked back at the big three. Never owned Chrysler products as they have always been at the bottom of the reliability factor even after Mercedes got a hold of the brand. Time will tell in ten years which was a better purchase/cost to own/left stranded!

I get 15 mpg highway with 35s and 5 inch lift and about 11 to 12 city. Its a v8 not a prius, with that being said I have a nissan versa to do my daily commute in. For better mpg get a diesel. New ram ecodiesel gets 27+ highway is very impressive for a truck.

Um, just a thought, but couldn't you just drop by one of the many Toyota dealerships and ask them how to do what you are wanting to do? Or, and I know that this is a wild suggestion, but you could just read the owners manual. Just a thought. I completely agree with you about the option of a more fuel efficient engine.

I love watching this stuff. I'm a technical guy, and own a 2007 limited tundra after owning a 2009 silverado and two brothers having brand new f150's. First off toyota seats are hard as cement. Um c'mon guys. 50 grand for a loaded "luxery" truck and the seats are hard. Their wide but hard. The ride is harsh compared to the others. I have same issue with the no lights on the window switches. What the heck. Again 50 grand and a worthless navigation system? Now the pros.. Resale resale resale. No matter how u slice it and dice it tundra dominates this. Mpg is pathetic...(I don't care though because I love the power) but why not add direct injection to the 5.7 or cylinder deactivation? C'mon guys. Hemi is same displacement more power and better mpg.

@RichDunn
@RichDunn 10 жыл бұрын
On the negative side the seats are uncomfortable, but on the positive side it's a very comfortable truck to travel in... eh? MPG will probably improve 2-3 mpg once the engine is run in and then it's as economical as any other just shy of 6 liters gas V8. I really like this truck, but the RAM1500 HEMI rules my heart and it's V6 diesel with the eight-speed torque-flight rules my head...

The heated seats heat up FAST! You apparently have never sat in a Chrysler product, those take a loooong time to heat up. The seats aren't comfortable? More comfortable than an F150 seat that's for sure. ENTUNE is not trouble,...voted the best and easiest units to operate.

15 mpg??? I moved from Phoenix to Denver recently. My 2006 f-150 FX4 with the 5.4 got 13.8 mpg average on the trip. That's with towing a uhaul trailer that came in at apex 3500 lbs and 600lbs of cargo in the truck. Mpg was calculated from fill up and not trip computer. I understand why Toyota stuck to the engine. "The engine that pulled the space shuffle". It's a marketing ploy to win over patriotic truck buyers. But i really wish they would be more competitive. I'm a ford guy myself but options are always nice.

And they call that a SAFE navigation unit?
@wsc31
@wsc31 10 жыл бұрын
I love the sense of safety and security imparted by all wheel drive and the attendant traction/stability etc nannies. The bad part of that sense of security is when a driver assumes that having the benefits of all wheel means that s/he is exempted from the laws of physics, something they often realize just about the time the bodywork meets a stationary roadside object. If a teenager cannot make the Toyota nav system work then what hope does an earlier generation have of success? Toyota must know that comfortable seats and usable technology sells trucks so what are they waiting for? A parenting question for Roman- why were you removing the snow and ice? That sort of drudgery is what we have sons for, or at least that is what I told my son.

My ideal Tundra for the a road trip like he did will either be an SR or SR5 with the smaller 4.6L V8 it has enough horsepower (310) and is a little better in fuel economy though let's face it, Toyota could've done a little better by adding cylinder deactivation.

I get 20-22 hwy miles per gallon. To achieve that you have to drive nice and all hwy miles. I've seen guys with ram get the same hwy mpg too. The tundra from my understanding is closer to the 19-20 if you drive it nice on the hwy. Your correct though 14-16 is real world driving Mpgs for most full size trucks.

Yes, it's a great drivetrain, but no the mpg doesn't match the class leaders anymore. 85K mile average with my 07 Tundra 5.7 4x4 was 15, 10K mile average with my 14 Sierra 5.3 4x4 is 20.
@MrNicholg
@MrNicholg 10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Acosta Car and Driver averaged 15mpg with less powerful Sierra, 13mpg with that old Tundra, which got to 60mph over 1 second quicker to 60mph to demonstrate the performance difference, for which you'd need a 6.2L GMC version and the right gears. For the money, you'd still save with the Tundra too. TFL has taken them around, and it's clear that GMC is just now keeping up with all the gas mileage tricks they can muster to get about the same mpg.
