My father bought one of these in 1989 and got it for $5500. That thing was a monster. He had it up to 147 once with me on the back. His friend couldn't keep up with his little 800. He was going 90 and we flew right by him like he was standing still.

Get those tires pumped to 42 lbs and soften the rear spring 3/4 of the way and the front end becomes much lighter and much more lively. Once this bike is setup properly it handles amazingly well.

I'm thinking the front tire is low on air pressure. That would explain the heavy feel in the front end because that bike should have a nice neutral front end feel. Even 10-15psi difference is huge I used to have a 94 model

I demo(ed) this twice in the last two days (10/17-18) in Daytona at Biketoberfest. Awesome is an understatement. If you want a power standard that almost looks like a cruiser and you like speed/power, this may be the bike. I'm a sportsbike rider who likes twisties and long sweepers and this bike handles both well with neck snapping acceleration and sound you wouldn't believe. Smooth, vigorous power everywhere. Great video, thanks!

Owned a gen 1 and rode 2 gen 2. The gen 1 is a better all around bike with attitude. The gen 2 is an animal. I have 2 names for the gen 2.....the smile maker and the widow maker if your not careful. The power in both make you wonder how cruisers with larger engines can't hardly get out of their way. Amazing what actual engineering can do. :)

Have to say Ive been riding my 2014 vmax since last February. I test drove 3 times before buying it because at first I was scared of it due to the torque I new it had based on research. As far as turning, I apply the old school theory of push and pull to turn and have no problem with it at low speeds. U-turns are much easier than on my zx14r. The foot pegs Ive kinda learned to work around but dont really care for there positioning. The Shift light from factory doesnt go off till you red line, you have to set that up. Yamaha does warn that this bike is NOT for Beginners, they say you should be a seasoned rider and I can vouge for that. Also shows in this video, the torque is incredible. My turning experience is a bit different, I find getting in to a turn fairly comfortable and the bike stays there with a steady throttle hand however I have made my mistakes lol, and the bike will let you know when those happen. In closing, this is my everyday rider, Ive put 12000 miles on it in 7 months and had almost retired my zx14 as it isnt near as fun. New plans for my max has it garaged for now. Supercharger and track time next. Good luck bike shopping.

Having just recently bought a 2020 VMax and been a previous owner of a 2012 YZF R1 I can say that this bike turns absolutely fine. Surprisingly well in fact. Everything about the gen 2 VMax performs. Not sure if his tire pressure was low or what this guy is comparing this bike too but he could not be more wrong. I was just having an absolute blast going up around the lake yesterday through all the twist and turns.

Have a 19 Busa and rode a 09 Vmax today. The power of the Vmax is astounding. The busa feels quicker (commander V) more agile. But, the Vmax feels like it had more torque and the seating position is obviously more comfortable.

I have an 88 max and have rode the gen 2 max both bikes are not for the faint of heart,it takes a certain person to want to ride and own one of these,I ride with guys that own newer sport bikes and they are always shocked at the power of my 30 yr old bike!! as someone else said these are mans bikes,you need to manhandle them,and they will get your blood pumping at every straight,turn,etc with that said both gen 1 and 2 are great daily cruisers,comfy on long rides,but dont let that fool you when that vboost kicks in its like warp speed!! and yes the gen 2 is as insane as everyone says,If i could afford one Id own one but for now my gen 1 is still kicking ass and taking names,with 42,000 on the clock! my one complaint-gas mileage ,vboost is very addicting.

The lack of cournering is from the rake and tail configuration, it's not bad once you learn how to manage a chopper type cruiser, with the extended front rake of the forks. More for going fast straight, yet good for cornering long sloping curves. Not so much for tight maneuvering. My Honda 700 Super Magna is the same way. Gets into full power mode after five thousand RPMs, and after 7000 hang on she gets with it then all the way to 10,000. Redlines very fast after 7,000.

I own a '93 since new, and just added a '16. A simple ecu programmer gives full power at low rpm. But the 200mm rear tire makes it difficult to lean over, it wants to stand up in the middle of a corner. But it's a simple daily rider, that can leave 50' stripes at will.

I have owned a vmax on and off since I bought my first new one in 85..they are their own animal and not for a beginner at ALL. In 1999 I was working for an Electric company that had me out working different regional locations every day and I stopped in a Yamaha dealer about an hour north of me..there sat a new Vmax and mine was getting old to me..I made an offer,they countered and we were to far apart for my liking so I left..a week or so later I decided I would make another offer and buy it..I stopped back in and told the salesman I was a bit more ready to deal and he said I was about 15 mins to late..a dude in his 40s was leaning on it and had a younger guy with him..I went over and congratulated him on his new bike n told him he barely beat me..he said "I bought it for my boy here"...his kid was 18,just passed a 2 day beginners MSRC and THIS was the bike he bought him..I felt fear for the kid..so..I tried talking the guy out of it,no way in hell, told the salesman he was an asshole for not explaining to the dad that this wasn't anywhere NEAR a bike for a person without a lot of experience much less a bike for a brand new rider..the salesman said he had never ridden one either and basically ignored me..I told the salesman I was dealing with that I would check in with him to see if Yamaha shipped them another one and I said it was kinda low class of the other asshole to not try to steer this kid away from the Max,but whatever..the following week I stopped in and the dude said " come back to the shop with me,I want to show you something" ..went back there and on a wooden skid sat that Vmax fucking destroyed..completely totalled..it was waiting on the insurance adjuster and cops to get done with it...the kid was showing off for friends,it got away from him and he hit a couple of parked cars..killed instantly. If you have no brains or experience,start out with something else and if you smarten up or get experience,by all means,buy one..they are the most awesome bang for the buck out there imho.

i love the handling of both. the vtx 1800 is massive power on demand it best expresses itself on the highway it gives you a powerful secure feeling unlike some bikes that feel like the wind will blow you away.but on the streets its so comfortable and feels so nice the weight is never a factor. honda outdid themselves. i actually love it after a long ride when you are tired she handles like a dream. the vmax that v-boost alone will win you over its a perfect size heavy enough to feel secure and agile enough for great handling.i love that seat for long rides. they are both well respected by other bikers anywhere i go.

I figure I could muscle a heavier bike. Does not wanna turn at 20? Doesn't matter much mostly. If it wants to turn fine enough at 50 it is appealing still. I had a 1985 VMAX and loved it . Like a 57 Chevy coming down the road a car guy can spot it a mile away and know it's a 57 Chevy and the same goes for the VMAX . Some years ago Hot Rod Magazine broke over and tested a Motorcycle and yes it was the VMAX and as far as I know it was there one and only time . They said it was the only Bike to come alone that remind them of a Muscle Car . They ran it down the drag strip and could not get the true reading of how fast it would go because the VBoost would kick in at 6000 RPM even at 100 MPH and the tire would spin . Beautiful Bike and nothing on the road looks better .

I owned an 85 Vmax back in the day and have owned close to 50 bikes since. This is a heavy bike and really there is nothing on the market to compare it to. From what I remember my Vmax was a great all around machine. In fact, I plan on buying a new one because that is the bike that left the longest lasting impression on me. Of course, it will be tough at low speeds but at the end of the day when it is rolling that is when it counts. I have a Harley RGS and it is a pig at low speeds....all big bikes are but man when I am cruising that Harley on the freeway it is amazing. I find that the sport bikes and niche bikes tend to last with me for a short period of time but the Vmax is a bike that can be ridden all day with power and comfort and with a much better price tag than a Harley. I have heard that they are coming to the end of their existence at least in Europe. The Vmax is one I would never sell again.

There is a mod to have v-boost on all the time. Very twitchy in a low speed takeoff, especially from a curb parking spot on a road with a high crown. Bike was designed to run the quarter mile, they dont like to turn. I've a 98 now and had it go down three times. Twice by me on takeoffs and the first was by the delivery guy when they dropped it off. You might want to try a ride on its main competitor the Honda V65. Similar quarter mile speeds but a smoother power curve and normal handling at low speeds. You could drag the pegs on em and they were as sure-footed as the Interceptors.

Yes also allways check tire pressure, because if you don't, it wabbles, which is not pleasant, but if the pressure is in tune, brtlother, hold on to the bars, you don't want to slip back side, if you allow me to suggest, please drive one for few days, street, freeway and road, you owe to yourself, after all a Legend is a legend, thank you, for your time.

First of all, you need more time on the bike. The shift light is programmable. There are also tons of other features that you are unaware of in the control panel like stop watch, and Quarter Mile clock. Yes there is some fighting the steering at low speeds but at 670+ pounds its not a sportbike. In town riding yes it holds its on, but the back road you said it!!! I love your initial reaction at between 3:55 and 5:30 Anyway not a bad review. Contact me for more info

Our weekend group of riders include the following bikes; 2014 VMax, 2014 BMW 1600 GTL, Yamaha Roadliner and (2) 2015 Harley Street Glides. The Vmax is all adrenaline and smiles with unmatched performance, and a really smooth riding bike. The BMW 1600 is a very, very nice machine with great performance and amenities. The Roadliner is pretty quick and smooth and looks great as a bagger. The Street Glides look awesome. I wish I could afford two bikes; a VMAX and BMW 1600 GTL.

yeah ya def need more time on it. i don't even notice the fighting turn at slow speeds anymore. the flipside of this is the extreme stability at speed. ya don't get blown by trucks and high speed turns are very very stable. it tracks a great line. don't kid yourself, the bike smokes the bmw 1600, not even close. the power really kicks in at 6K and ya haven't felt what it has yet as you're not above 7500 on that thing. i got an ecu flash, unrestricted now and tops at 170, runs mid 9's in the quarter and is just an insane ride.

I've ridden a few at BikeBiz in Parramatta. The best way to corner is to get off the seat keeping the bike upright. The rear tyre is fairly flat with a short lean angle and the offset when leaned is horrible. But what a bike!

Ah the Vmax... I dropped this bike at a demo ride about 2 years ago here in Hartford CT. The instructor @ 17:20 he was there, saw the whole thing....Let me explain.. What TwoWheelObsession is saying about this bike is 100% true. I thought it was because i was a noob that I felt that way about the bike, but now I know I was right. On demo day I went from an fz09 to fz07 to the Vmax. Vmax was my last ride for the day. Something echoed in my head "dont ride this bike, it looks way to heavy and the displacement is to powerful' but i went for it anyway (always listen to your gut instinct). Everything was going fantastic until we were slowing down at a red light (which felt forever). I held the clutch b/c I couldnt find neutral It was a hit n miss for that bike. I was so focused on finding neutral that I didnt even notice that there was a dip (uneven tarmac) on the road. So I put my right foot down, went to put my left foot down and there it went. My left foot landed in the dip perfectly and my balance went to shyt. It was the slowest drop in my life. Another rider saw me falling, he tried to get off his bike to aid me but the bike was already at no point of return. I fought to keep that baby up but it just took me with it.

I just sold my gen #2 vmax for a new fjr1300. Love the fjr but miss the vmax. You kinda feel like a superhero on it knowing you can kick the shit out of anything on the street. But the fjr is no slouch either, very fast. As far as low speed handling of a Vmax you get used to it and it makes you a better rider. Fjr is nice for longer rides. But the vmax is a conversation piece.

I'm the same height. And looking at this since it thought it was a larger framed bike I might fit on. Seems like guys under 6' are having a reach touching down. Why is it too small? Would forward controls fix the problem, or just too small in general? Is the 1700 sized the same as the older 1200? Thanks for any more input..

I think you would get used to the ride if you stayed on it long enough. I thought the same thing with my 1987 Honda 700 Super Magna, with its longer rake and tail configuration. Rides more like a factory chopper in the way it turns in tight quarters, not so well. Balances out better after it starts moving and then it courners really good.

Three things: 1. The second generation (1700) bike does not have "Secondaries" like the first generation bike (1200). It is a computer and intake controlled simulation of the first generation bike's butterfly controlled double pump carburetor (VBoost). 2. If the suspension were set up for you specifically, the front end "heaviness" would disappear. 3. I challenge you to name a stock production bike that has significantly more power than the VMax when lugging the bike at 28.5% of redline in top gear. I doubt it will have 4 cylinders. Disregarding minimal ground clearance differences, this bike corners as well as any other bike that is set up properly. The only thing it does not do well is quick right to left transitions (aka a "chicane".) (Due to the weight of the bike.) The second generation bike is light years ahead of the first generation bike in cornering simply due to the second generation bike having a much stiffer frame.
@johnjones3648
@johnjones3648 8 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you've stated, except that the V Boost is not a double pump carb. It simply opens a channel which allows each cylinder to draw from 2 carbs on every intake stroke above 6000 rpm.
@toodarkpark

Double pump - as in two carbs services one cylinders (one of them via the butterfly valve.) Pedantic disagreement at best.

Why do they gear powerful motorcycles so short? 3,000 rpms at 55mph? That's much higher RPM's than a modern car with 1/4 of the power to weight ratio. Why wouldn't they want to put an overdrive gear on these motorcycles so they can idle the engine down the highway in top gear? Bikes need super high gears, because of the power to weight ratio. Low gears are not good for normal driving.

People just rationalize this bike. Yes this bike is heavy but the endless power you hardly even notice the weight, well only turning at very low speeds you tend to feel the mass of the bike.... yes it is too expensive and has poor fuel consumption. The fact is only a minority of people could fully enjoy this badass of a bike. From what I have read in the comments it would be best to stick with the 1200 Vmax because the 1700 or 1680cc needs the right rider to tame the beast.

I test rode the 16 VMax and a 16 Night rode special on the same day and while the VMax power is just raw and thrilling, it didn't have that low end torque like the night rod. On the VMax I had to get it up to 4000 RPM but when I did I was damn this thing is a beast!! Also because the VMax was higher off the ground it was a little tougher to turn even though the night rod has a 240 mm tire and the VMax a 200mm tire (for me). Lastly, when I looked at both bikes, well i don't know any other way to put it but say the VMax is ugly. That night rod was just sexy and when I opened up the throttle it was like busting a nut. I know a lot of people won't agree and thats all good but its just my opinion. Ride whatever the HELL you wanna ride.

Well I'm quite sure the VMax beats the night rod in the quarter mile as I have already stated that it's a BEAST but anyone that has any experience with bikes knows that. I don't drag race so I could care less but if I did I'd throw a trask turbo intercooled kit on the vrod and take it from super Sayian 2 to super sayian 4 but at the end of the day that's what super sports are made for and also you saying that ur 1300 CC inline 4 FJR can beat a Vrod is saying that your corvette can beat a Dodge Charger R/T. I mean really??? I mean yea the FJR has bags and a wind screen but it's not in any way shape or form a "cruiser" it's a sport bike with some touring accessories and a more upright seating position. I ride the vrod because to me it's a bad azz looking bike. That's vmax is an animal but it ain't for me no matter what they did to it.
