[2016] BMW 730d xDrive @ Fast Drive // 200 km German Autobahn // Vmax

That is what it looks like if you have a fast car in Germany - optimally Diesel powered - on Saturday morning on an Autobahn with nearly no speed limit. I was amazed that I spend only around 18 liters per 100 km to gain an average of 226 km/h at one point during my journey. The new 7 series is a very comfortabel and yet efficient car. And I have to admit that the entry-level model with 265 PS fits absolutely well - no need for a 740d in this case! Also xDrive is not the badest thing I guess, although I'd go for the rear-wheel drive model.

Watching the Autobahn POV from all the great cars is probably the closest I shall ever get to actually being on the Autobahn. Klasse gefahren, macht Spaß die Videos zu sehen. Ich finde es faszinierend wenn man auf die "Kilometer" achtet. Innerhalb 10minuten fast 50km zurückgelegt. Krank. It wouldn't be very successful unless you stop and clean it correctly. In the winter you have the salt, in the summer all those insects. Insects are even harder to remove and it's quite possible to make it worse if you use your windscreen washer. I know, it should be much cleaner to have a nice look...

exoroxx In my opinion you did the right choice to buy the 730d instead of more powerful versions , I heard they are unreliable. You can't stress a diesel engine too much pretending it will behave like a gasoline unit.

I don't buy, if I can rent them. ;) The reasonable choice would be the 730d (*without* xDrive) in my opinion. Reliability? I don't know exactly, the B57D30 is a quite new engine. But it might be more reliable than the 740d/750d with two/four turbochargers as seen with the N57D30. I've also driven the 740d (only available with xDrive) and it was fun to drive. More power, but also more weight. Low fuel consumption. Absolutely a great car.

1. RWD is the real drive form. ;) 2. xDrive takes performance (all above 100 km/h) 3. You have to pay more for a car if it is with xDrive 4. More weight - less fun on dry roads (and I'm only looking for fun on dry roads). 5. Higher fuel consumption (+0,4-0,6 liters per 100 km) 6. No lowering (especially for 3/4 Series with M Sports, ugly...) 7. More components - higher failure rate and maintenance costs? Actually, xDrive (and quattro as well) is a good drive form. But... but it makes only sense to me on snow. I don't need an AWD system on more than 360 days a year... And of course, if you want really quick acceleration, you need AWD for perfect traction. It's also advisable for cars with high power output (just look at Audi RS 6, AMG-Mercedes E 63 S and BMW M5 F90) to keep traction without forfeiting speed and performance. But that is not the point for the BMW 730d. This car can manage the power easily with only RWD - year-round if you aren't a dumbass.

As far as I know it is limited to 260 km/h, and also the car is engineered in a way to be able to cope with constant high speed runs. So are the tires, if the tire has a rating of let's say 190 km/h they guarantee that it will be able to withstand that speed as long as you are within its limit. This is not to say that it isn't going to increase the wear on the tires. On our Jaguar XE the tires are rated at nearly 300 km/h hence if we do 240 km/h it will do it without sweat. So will the car.

Yes, but the rating rule is that: If rated to 270 km/h, it can hold 270kmh guaranteedly for 1 hour with max payload an max pressure "once in a lifetime" when it is brand new. The test is done on a huge barrel/cylinder thing. This is why you need much more speed rating if you use the tyre for "top speed" runs.

Schwer zu sagen, da ich im Display nur die Wassertemperaturanzeige sehe. Im iDrive wäre mir kein Untermenü zur Öltemperatur - wie man sie bspw. in der E-Klasse W213 nachlesen kann - bekannt. Ich schätze mal, dass selbst unter Dauervolllast wie in diesem Fall die Öltemperatur irgendwo zwischen 110 und 120°C liegt.

RWD: + less weight + only (slightly) slower from 0-100 kph - but then it's faster (we are talking about a car which is more often faster than 100 kph) + you know better what the car is doing, when only one axle pushes you + no extra force in the steering, you feel the road better + less fuel consumption + it's a little unicorn in the line-up, almost every 7 Series has xDrive + one driven axle is just a compromise, but it makes me more fun xDrive: + better in wet/snowy conditions + Launch Control is more effective - if you need it

They are all running around 258-262 on the speedometer, which translates to slightly above 250kph. BMW is not like Mercedes - when they say 250 kph, you will get nothing more (only on the speedometer, but that doesn't count).

I don't know how you can reach such high average speeds. Every summer when I cross Germany from west to east (about 600km) I cannot achieve higher average than 185 km/h, there is too much traffic and constantly have to slow down for trucks and slow drivers.

Cosmin I recommend travelling across Germany Saturday night into Sunday. Ideally between midnight and 5am, even the A2 Autobahn Hannover-Berlin which is usually very congested. that time is very empty. If you have the proper weapon you can easily achieve 200+kmh avg speed. Bear in mind this requires your speed well in excess of 200kmh most of the time.

I have actually crossed Saturday night into Sunday last year but now there are constant road works, every 20 km. Some even go on for 15-20 km. This is on A3 and A6. I hope this year will be better. If I am honest driving through Germany is now quite painful. Heavy jams and many foreign drivers who cut you off. My father was very close to an accident when a Romanian truck driver pulled in front of him on a section where trucks were not allowed to pass. He was at 210, luckily the car has good brakes.

Kommt zumindest fast hin. Bevor ich den 730d xDrive getestet habe, hatte ich einen 535d xDrive, welcher offiziell sogar 15 kg mehr wog. Auf der Landstraße hat sich trotz Leistungsdefizit ein recht ähnliches Handlingtalent präsentiert. Zum Vergleich (EU-Leergewicht): 530d (F10): 1785 kg 535d xDrive (F10): 1915 kg 730d xDrive (G11): 1900 kg 740d xDrive (G11): 1935 kg 740d xDrive (F01): 2015 kg A8 3.0 TDI quattro (D4): 1955 kg S 350 d 4MATIC (W222 - Mj. 2018): 2025 kg Ein bisschen leichter ist der 7er G11 also geworden - das möchte man angesichts des Carbon Core aber auch meinen. Damit kommt er in etwa auf das Niveau des 5er F10, der allerdings auch nicht gerade ein Leichtgewicht war.

Ich würde allerdings, sofern es geht, auf X-Drive verzichten. Wozu braucht man diesen, wenn man nicht gerade im Gebirge oder in polarähnlichen Gefilden wohnt? Der bringt nur unnötig viel Gewicht, mehr Verbrauch etc.. Für den Ampelstart mag er, gerade wegen des enormen Drehmoments des 730d, ganz nett sein, aber ein Großteil der Leute bewegt das Auto im Alltag doch eh gesittet und normal.

Ich hatte auch schon eine Menge BMW sowohl mit als auch ohne xDrive ausgiebig testen können und ich tendiere aus dreierlei Gründen auch zweifellos zum Fahrzeug ohne xDrive: Weniger Gewicht, niedrigerer Verbrauch und geringere Kosten. Aus dem Stand geht ein BMW mit xDrive und entsprechend pfundiger Leistung, insbesondere mit Launch Control, wirklich pfeilschnell - die Top-Diesel in 3er und 4er brauchen nur ca. 4,8 Sekunden für den Sprint auf 100 km/h, was für deren profunden Gewicht bei nicht allzu immensen 313 PS/630 Nm mehr als beachtlich ist. Und im Winter hat man mit xDrive reichlich Spaß, vor allem an den drei Tagen im Jahr, bei denen Frau Holle noch schneller ist als der Winterdienst und eine dicke Schneedecke deinen Weg säumt. Dann lassen sich auch die kräftig motorisierten BMW dank xDrive spielerisch handeln und dank heckbetonter bzw. dynamischer Lastverteilung ist auch wirklich für Freude gesorgt. So ist mir der 335i xDrive wirklich sehr positiv in Erinnerung geblieben - Sport+ Modus an (DSC auf DTC-Stufe) und immer den leichten Drift gewagt. Ohne xDrive wäre es an diesen schneereichen Tagen längst nicht so spaßig gewesen, bei aller Sicherheit wohlgemerkt. Und ich lebe noch nicht einmal im Mittelgebirge. Die restlichen ~360 Tage im Jahr tut es aber auch ein normaler BMW ohne xDrive, sofern man da überhaupt noch die Wahlmöglichkeit hat (ab dem 740d wird dir beim G11 ja xDrive zwangsverordnet). Dann schleppt man nicht nur weniger Gewicht mit sich herum und spart etwa einen halben Liter auf 100 km, sondern punktet auch mit der besseren Performance ab 100 km/h, da mit lediglich einer angetriebenen Achse und einem Differenzial der Antriebswiderstand nunmal geringer ausfällt. Aber wenn Geld keine Rolex spielt, kreuzt man dieses sicherheitsrelevante Extra eben an - sofern es, wie gesagt, nicht ohnehin schon serienmäßig ist. Ein (persönliches) Ärgernis beim 3er oder 4er mit xDrive und dem beinahe obligatorischen M Sportpaket ist die fehlende Tieferlegung. Das sieht dann irgendwie falsch aus... Beim 5er G30 oder 7er G11 ist mir diesbezüglich aber bislang der weit verbreitete xDrive optisch noch nicht negativ aufgefallen. Auch die Topmodelle M550i xDrive und M760Li xDrive stehen gut auf ihren vier Rädern. Und bei deren Kraftveranlagung unterstütze ich den xDrive. Gut finde ich auch die Lösung beim M5 F90, der auch ganz klassisch seine 608 PS über der Hinterachse abwälzen kann, während er seine Leistung im Alltag souverän über alle vier Räder auf die Straße bringt.

Welches Auto bot den besseren Fahrkomfort? Die S-klasse oder der 7er?

Die S-Klasse mit Luftfahrwerk (Magic Body Control ist im S 350 d nicht verfügbar) ist eine Sänfte - man gleitet dahin wie auf Wolke 7. Mir persönlich war sie ab Geschwindigkeiten über 200 km/h eindeutig zu schwammig. Der neue 7er hat beim Komfort eindeutig dazugelernt, der alte 7er fühlte sich einfach nur größer als ein 5er an, war gefühlt dieser Klasse und eben vor allem der S-Klasse aber nicht gewachsen. Ich würde den Komfort im 7er nahezu auf Augenhöhe zur Sänfte S-Klasse sehen, wobei der BMW die andere Seite (Dynamik) deutlich intensiver und angenehmer beleuchtet. Vom Federverhalten hat mir die S-Klasse trotz - oder eigentlich sogar wegen - ihrer schaukeligen, in Watte gebetteten Art nicht so gut gefallen wie der sehr ausgewogen federnde BMW. Mitfahrer könnten in der S-Klasse durchaus "seekrank" werden. Ein bisschen Härte ist ja nie verkehrt, nur stößig sollte es nie sein. Damit rüttelt der ausgefeilte 7er am Thron - ähnlich wie es jetzt der neue 5er macht, der die alte Benchmark E-Klasse (W213) ablöst. Mal sehen, was sich Mercedes bei der MoPf (Facelift) dieses Jahr ausdenkt, um die Spitze erneut zu behaupten.

Sooo ... nach unserer kurzen Konversation unter der tendenziösen NDR-Reportage :D (du erinnerst dich vielleicht) musste ich mir nochmal dieses wirklich entspannende Video anschauen. Ich finde den neuen 7er echt super und er ist nicht ganz so teuer, wie es die aktuelle S-Klasse mit ihren diversen Paket-Zwängen ist. Einen Grund gibt es aber, weshalb ich die S-Klasse dem 7er vorziehen würde und dieser ist das absolut grandiose Burmester-Soundsystem mit 24 Lautsprechern und 3D-Effekt, was dem Bowers&Wilkins-System deutlich überlegen ist.

watching this now in 2020 and who knows how much BETTER this car has even gotten in 4 years.......so if correct, you only used about 4.7 Gallons of fuel for those 60 miles you drove the car at around 155 Miles per hour for almost 17-18 miutes straight?????

That's right (~18 l/100 km for ~225 km/h). I've driven the newest 7 Series this year and it was even slightly better in some ways (infotainment, assists). It was the 750d xDrive with even more power/torque. Fuel consumption was exactly 6,6 l/100 km for the ~1500 miles I've driven it. I really love the combination 7 Series plus Diesel (730d/740d/750d). And I was a bit disappointed from the new 750i, the old 750i was slightly better in my opinion.

That's not the whole story. The average sank to around 16 liters per 100 km after that distance (like seen in the end of the video) - make it twice and there we go. You can easily have half of the fuel consumption and if you really try (but why?) just a 1/3 of that. You can - and that is such a good thing. Or... you just don't care about fuel consumption and you are still able to manage 450 km or more in high speed mode. That's fair enough.

Doch, sehr sogar! Mit dem G11 (LCI) hatte ich die folgenden Jahre auch noch mehrmals das Vergnügen und er verbindet sehr schön eine gewisse Sportlichkeit mit Luxus und Komfort. Er liegt bei 250 km/h deutlich satter auf der Straße als die S-Klasse (W 222), bei der es ab 220 km/h schon ziemlich unangenehm wird - sehr komfortabel, aber viel zu indirekt und schwammig. Bei dieser schnellen Fahrt (heute leider nicht mehr darstellbar wegen deutlich mehr Tempolimits) reicht der 730d mit seinen 265 PS/620 Nm auch vollkommen aus, da er nicht so oft hochbeschleunigen musste. Da wäre der 740d und insbesondere der 750d (bei ungefähr gleichem Durst) einfach die souveränere Wahl. Aber so musste sich der 730d und dessen Fahrer nicht wirklich anstrengen...

Here in Canada if you stuck to the limits you'd spend your whole life on the roads... there are sections of fully divided straight freeways that are 80-100km/h and people blow by doing 130km/h+ and the cops don't usually give a shit as long as you're being safe (at least where I live)

Oder man fährt einfach nicht überall Vollgas, dann gönnt man sich den langen 8. Gang gern. Bei 3000 U/min im 8. Gang hat allerdings selbst der kleine Diesel noch genug Zug, der 740d erst recht. Die Diesel sind bei BMW ja generell so abgestuft, dass die Höchstgeschwindigkeit im 7. Gang erreicht wird und der 8. Gang der Schongang ist, der Drehzahl und Verbrauch senkt. Beim Benziner ist dagegen der 6. Gang der Fahrgang, während du dort zwei Fahrgänge hast. Der 750i xDrive (G11) dreht im 8. Gang dann nur noch 3400 U/min, die Power (>300 PS bei dieser Drehzahl) reicht aber dennoch vollkommen aus, um in die Abregelung zu donnern. Beim kürzlich gefahrenen 540i xDrive (G31) sah es wiederum anders aus: In der Ebene reicht es im 8. Gang nur für 3500 U/min und Tacho 248, da fehlt durch die lange Übersetzung dann einfach die Leistung (ca. 220-230 PS statt maximal 340 PS bei 5500-6500 U/min). In dieser Hinsicht finde ich die Diesel etwas gelungener abgestimmt, während die Benziner durch ihre lange Abstufung jedoch ihren Effizienznachteil ein wenig wett machen. Den 750i xDrive fand ich schon extrem effizient für einen V8 dieser Leistungsklasse.

Es ist zwar klein und je nach Auflösung schwer bis kaum erkennbar, aber auf dem Monitor habe ich den Verbrauch mitlaufen lassen. Diese Fahrweise endet bei freier Autobahn durchaus mal bei 17-19 Litern. Für das Gebotene finde ich das aber schon ziemlich sparsam. Wenn man nicht ständig ausgebremst wird und wieder beschleunigen muss, reicht der 730d auch vollkommen - ein sehr angenehmer, kultivierter Antrieb. Mehr Spaß macht zweifelsfrei der 740d (dort zwangsweise mit xDrive) mit seiner zweistufigen Aufladung, dieser gibt sich aber akustisch nicht ganz so fein wie der Single-Turbo 730d. Meine persönliche Wahl wäre wohl der 730d ohne xDrive mit M Sportpaket.

Das ist, wenn man Gewicht, Größe und vor allem Geschwindigkeit berücksichtigt, nicht zuviel. 740d und 750d sind aufgrund der mehrfachen Turbos nicht so haltbar wie der 730d, man liest so einiges über außerplanmäßige Werkstattbesuche.... Der 730d wäre daher auch mein Favorit, gerade wenn man hier bei Dir sieht, wie mühelos er auf 260 kmh zieht.

@@Niederrheiner77 Vor wenigen Monaten hatte ich mal den neuen 750i xDrive und dieser hat mich mit Verbräuchen um 9-12 Liter (Gesamt: 11 l/100 km) daran erinnert, dass der 730d die bessere Wahl ist. xD Natürlich sind dort die 530 PS/750 Nm ganz nett, aber eben wirklich nicht ständig von Bedarf. Und das sage ich als V8-Fan... Der 7er lädt eher zum Cruisen und Genießen ein. Der 3-Liter-Diesel passt (gut gedämmt und abgeschottet) bestens zum Ambiente. Bzgl. Haltbarkeit mache ich mir bei 740d/750d langfristig auch Sorgen, der 730d dürfte mit seinem einzelnen VTG-Lader das solidere Konzept sein. Dieser Motor hat mich dieses Jahr auch in einem 530d mit 5,2 l/100 km Gesamtverbrauch überzeugt.

In Europe: 30i - 4 cyl 40i - 6 cyl 50i - 8 cyl 30d - 6 cyl (1 turbo) 40d - 6 cyl (2 turbos) 50d - 6 cyl (4 turbos) You can find the 4 cyl diesel engine as 18d/20d/25d (and 16d for the 3 series).

You can get everything fast for at least one time. ;) But do think that this is a fair comparisation? Is the BMW 730d (with all modern safety issues, especially to compete higher speed) only made for high top speed? And it's well-known that German manufacturers are limiting (almost all of) their cars at 250 kph to play friendly with the government. And to save money for bigger brakes and better tires as well...

badsoldier11 Das Problem beim 330d ist aber, dass er innen dem 3er noch mehr ähnelt als der 7er. Man kann ja Fahrzeuge aus nahbaren Gründen präferieren, dieser Vergleich ist aber ein wenig lächerlich. Auch der 7er mit Carbon Core (damit wiegt er weniger als ein vergleichbarer 5er!) ist wirklich nicht langsam und insbesondere bei niedrigeren Geschwindigkeiten büßt du nicht mehr als eine halbe Sekunde ein. Bei höheren Geschwindigkeiten erfreust du dich am höheren Komfort und dem besseren Geradeauslauf. Der 7er ist ein Langstreckengleiter, kein Rennwagen. Das Tempolimit bei 250 km/h hat noch andere Gründe, die zumindest bei den AG-Fahrzeugen gern genutzt werden. Fraglos ist die Belastung bei höheren Geschwindigkeiten auch größer und das Fahrzeug muss für hohe Geschwindigkeiten auch vollumfänglich ausgelegt sein. Wenn ich ein Fahrzeug leistungsteigere und dann die evt. vorhandene Limitierung entferne, beachte ich dies meistens nicht. Ich könnte dir jetzt noch verraten, dass man für weniger als 7000 € auch an schnellere Fahrzeuge kommt, aber das führt wohl zu weit...
