one thing you didn't mention is the explorer's ability to climb in the snow. Recently i took one to Colorado with heavy snow storms and it performed like a champ. Simple to change the gearing from inside the car and light so it's ability to make it through the snow was impressive. Not sure i would take my F250 in the snow like that....

You should disable traction control on Explorer to prevent it from filling on its face when it senses slippage. TC can be fully disabled, but stability control cannot be disabled . FiY - when done properly Explorer runs 14.6s in 1/4 - stock.

Not even close. That Ram 1500 Eco diesel gets 29mpg on the highway and averages 24 over all. Until Ford puts that Range Rover diesel in the f150 they are second best to Ram. But even after that happens within the next year. I am guessing VM Moti is working on something around 275hp and 500 tq with better fuel mileage. Which would make the f150 look bad in towing tests
@budfans

+BigDave12768 the F150 is the most selling vehicle in the US and it has been for a while for a reason. Yeah the eco diesel gets more fuel economy but it really just comes down to what you like the best... Some people may want better fuel economy other people just don't care.

+shawn benfield the eco diesel is not a chrystler design it has a flaw with the cam gears but all diesels have issues during their first years the ford 6.4 was so bad they only made it for 2 years then replaced it. everyone has an opinion on cars and trucks I'm a chevy guy I own both a diesel cruze and a diesel 3500hd and neither have let me down. nor has my 96, 99, 07 silverados, or my 2011 cruze
@BigDave12768
@BigDave12768 8 жыл бұрын
+shawn benfield ok it's a Fiat product. It's VM Motori engine. VM has been building Diesel engines for 50 years and they come in the Fords in Europe. And if Ram is so bad why have climbed from number 3 to 2? And now a Ford is doing advertising against them!!!! They see the writing the on the wall. There over priced pick up trucks are losing customers to Dodge. Why is that you ask? Because Fords are no longer reliable and end up at dealers for long periods of time. You can get a limited Ram 1500 with all bells and whistles for about 51k right now. 62k msrp. That's about 9 grand cheaper than that f150 with aluminum body. That in a few years is going to be seen as a bigger mistake than the 6.0. They should have left that bed as steel. Used car ads are going to read 2015 f150 with only a couple small puncture holes in bed.

Think the Explorer could’ve done better if for these 3 things: launched at high RPMs, in sand mode, and in Drive. Sport mode is used for having the car in higher RPMs under normal driving, and for using the paddle shifters. But the car doesn’t trust you’ll shift in time, so in sport mode even if you’re in automatic, it shifts sooner. So if to get the true performance of the Explorer, these things would need to be done. It is entirely possible the F-150 would still win tho.

I owned a 2013 Explorer. I have to agree the seats are a bit small. Every review out there against other SUV points out how slow they are. They are very slow off line no matter what motor you get. You never mentioned if you race the front wheel drive version or the AWD. The one thing I thing that AWD explorer can do that will make the f150 look bad is in all weather driving. The explorer is front wheel drive till it needs the rears to kick in. These pick up trucks, even with traction control and stability control can't compare to the explorer. I was so impressed the first time I took it out in a snow storm. I thought with the 20's and street tires it was going to be a slow ride home. Nope, I put it in snow flake mode and it held the road better than my diesel truck (Ram ofcourse) that's a test you guys should do. Get a parking lot. Set up a course. Then test drive these while it's snowing with an inch on pavement. I bet the explorers/all suv's make the pick up trucks look bad

Fellow Gearheads, excuse me if this has already been said somewhere else in the comments, but the 3.5 EcoBoost in the 2017 F-150 is the second generation of the V6 EcoBoost engines and is the first Ford vehicle to get this completely redesigned powerplant. According to the Forbes article below, it is not related to the first generation 3.5 EcoBoost in Explorer which probably explains the lower torque numbers and comparatively lower fuel economy. www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2016/05/03/ford-refreshes-its-original-ecoboost-v6-and-makes-the-jump-to-10-speeds-for-2017-f-150-and-raptor/#755cd60e48e8

Ok I like new trucks but almost 70k for an F150 GTFO!!!!! That's why I like the GMC Denali, it's has everything you need, no massaging seats, power drop tail gate crap, push button start and all those gimmics. Just nice touches like cooled leather, and just more upscale than an SLE. and don't forget I can get one for about 60k, and that's a Diesel 2500, way way less than a F150

@joshm.9308

Patrick Connolly Well my older Explorer can certainly tow more than the current generation....and unlike this Taurus wagon, the older Explorers were also built on a better frame too (the new Explorers are basically glorified versions of the now defunct Freestyle/Taurus X). Add to the fact that mine also has true four wheel drive....while this newer version only has certain "modes" for terrain management. With that being said, however, although I will admit that the newer Explorers are more technologically advanced, and more powerful, they are certainly more of a car than a true SUV anymore.

Not a ford fan but the only one I would consider is a 5.0 f150 my uncle had a few ecoboosts and gave him nothing but problems and he averaged less mpg then my v8 hemi 8speed. I use to love ford trucks we had fleets of them that I would snowplow with thru my company and the last true trucks they made where back in the early 2000s these new trucks are way you light weight to push and significant amount of snow! Our brand new ford plow truck gets pushed to the side instead of the snow! Very disappointing.

The F150 and Explorer have two COMPLETELY different factory tunes and different turbos on their EcoBoosts. Although they are the same displacement, the F150 produces 70 more lb-ft of torque than the Explorer, and has different gearing. OF COURSE the F150 is going to win. Stupid comparison.
