A Diesel engine may not be for *everyone,* I know there will always be people who would complain about the rattling noise diesel engines are known for, but as long as the hood is down, the noise shouldn't be all that bad. And I believe that those who can afford it, and either want or need a small displacement diesel engine should be allowed the option. :)

People complain about the size of this truck for the money, but realize that, other than a somewhat well-equipped half-ton for the same money, no other kind of new vehicle offers all the features this truck has, along with the capability, a size that will fit most garages, car-like manners, AND fuel mileage to boot. After TTL this thing may be $50k, but you get a lot for that money, especially when you consider you don't need to add a backup camera, a trailer brake controller comes standard, as does an exhaust brake. Again, this is $45k for a maxed-out truck. Good luck getting a maxed half-ton anywhere near that price, even if it's a few years old.

I'm glad somebody is building a compact diesel p/u. I had hoped some years ago that Mahindra would bring their truck to the US, but that fell through. Was this the high-level trim option mentioned? The interior looks bad for an 80s truck. Certainly my '87 Mitsubishi SPX has a better interior finish. What's more, it had the 2.6L four-banger balance-shaft engine. Any info on how they deal with the shake and roll on this 2.8L behemoth? Also, for the record, my 2015 Ecodiesel is getting about 25.7 mpg commuting. My best was 32.9 mpg when I first took it on a long trip. Chevy needs to put an 8-speed transmission on their rig.

Where as diesel is almost dead for passenger cars in North America, a small pickup truck with a diesel makes so much sense. The torque makes it ideal for occasional towing and when used as an everyday vehicle, gets great MPG that rivals midsize cars. Now if it only wasn't so expensive...

I had one 35 mile run in my '17 Canyon diesel under admittedly perfect conditions. No traffic, no wind, flat road, cruise set at 65 mph (60-65 mph speed limit the whole way) and it returned 42.5 mpg - no kidding! My truck is a 4x4 CCLB and has the front air dam removed too. Wind resistance rises exponentially with speed and 65 mph is the happy crossroads between where the engine wants to be as far as its efficiency and torque production goes (1,800 rpm) and wind resistance. I find in normal keeping up with traffic driving, accelerating in a way that has it upshifting at just over 2,200 and dropping back to 1,800 rpm kicks butt for fuel economy and has the truck thrusting along nicely. Not fast, but steady and with traffic no problem. Driving it this way keeps the engine right around its fat 2,000 rpm torque peak. My average highway mpg is 32.5, I have let my "B" tripmeter run from new, the average lifetime mixed driving mpg is 25.2 over 5,000 miles and it is getting more efficient with miles, as it was in the 24s awhile ago. I am not trying particularly hard to get good mileage either, generally taking off briskly on that satisfying wave of torque from a stop and then cruising efficiently. Love my Canyon!
@zachl6918
@zachl6918 2 жыл бұрын
Craig that is excellent fuel economy! Do you still have your Canyon and if so how do you like it? Any maintenance/reliability issues?
@craighoffman8160
@craighoffman8160 2 жыл бұрын
@@zachl6918 Still running great! No issues. It is important to feed any modern diesel a good lubricant/cleaning fuel additive as American diesel fuel kinda sucks. Do that and they can run a long time. The "high pressure common rail" system on any modern diesel needs fuel additive to live a long and healthy life. There are people on the forums who have had their injectors fail, which can cause expensive engine damage. Being a bit of a nut, I run plenty of lube/cleaning additive, and during COVID lockdown I was bored and fabricated up a mounting system and added a 2 micron Racor marine water separator and fuel filter after the stock filter box. My truck's high pressure fuel pump and injectors see nothing but clean and lube enhanced fuel. Adding the 2 micron filter is overkill, but I am an overkill kinda guy - LOL At this point my truck is averaging 27.5K MPG over the last 50K miles since adding a Green Diesel Engineering tune. 34 MPG is pretty common on the open road now that it is tuned and broken in. Out on the open road with 440 pound feed of torque (in tuned form) at 2K RPM, once it hits 6th gear the transmission is done shifting until I slow down. It is so effortless on the open road. Cruising at 80 MPH for hours from CO to ID on a long trip in I-80 (80 MPH limit) was a pleasure. Gotta set the cruise, or one can find themselves going 90 plus. The diesel is quiet and with all that fat effortless torque, it just inhales the road with an economy of RPM. If mostly city driving and especially if a lot of shorter trips are involved, I would go with the snappy free revving gas engine and it's 8 speed transmission (diesel has 6 speeds). I love the diesel vibe in a midsize truck and it is outstanding when used in it's highway "sweet spot" a lot, as I tend to do. The diesel does require more owner involvement though, particularly with the fuel additive. GM is reportedly going to discontinue the diesel, the next revision of the trucks will offer the 2.7L turbo gas engine with a 10 speed transmission. That should be a fantastic powertrain. The 2.7 is currently being offered as a option in the full size trucks, I think it belongs in the Colorado/Canyon. As for my diesel, I hope to get serious mileage out of it, so it can eventually become an old man in a clean high mileage truck situation ;)
@zachl6918
@zachl6918 2 жыл бұрын
@@craighoffman8160 Thank you for the quick and detailed response. I'm interested in a mid size truck and I've been researching them. I just read where GM is reportedly going to do a full update for the 2023 model year for the Colorado and Canyon which I think is much needed for the interior, but they're only going to offer 1 engine choice, the 2.7L which means the 3.5L and the diesel will no longer be available. I'm bummed about that.
@craighoffman8160
@craighoffman8160 2 жыл бұрын
@@zachl6918 Don't be buimmed, the 2.7 turbo is gonna be a nice improvement over the 3.6L V6. The V6 is a revvy engine, the 2.7 was designed as a truck engine, with way more bottom end power, which will be nice for towing The 2.8 diesel will always be the towing king for these trucks though.
@zachl6918
@zachl6918 2 жыл бұрын
@@craighoffman8160 True, I agree the 2.7L is better than the 3.5L however I wish that they would still offer the diesel. But at least they're still going to offer an ICE in the times when there's (unfortunately) so much push for EV's. As someone who drives a lot in rural areas an EV will never work unless they can nearly double their range and recharge in 10 minutes.

Chrysler used that same engine and an earlier form at 2.4 L and it put out about 180 horsepower and over 300 ft pounds of torque but I don't remember the exact numbers. The minivans that they put it into in the Dodge Caravans in Australia we're getting 50 miles per gallon on the expressway if you were the single occupant. With seven people in it it would still travel 730 plus miles before you had to refill the 20 gallon fuel tank. Add about three to four more pounds of air pressure into the tires, 36 to 38 lb would be good, and possibly get you up to 10% better fuel mileage. And that truck also has probably the worst grill for fuel mileage that they made.

+Jay Smith fair enough for 10 or more mph I noticed my truck does the same. Especially if I'm at 65mph (under 2k rpm) and if I go 75 (over 2k rpm). However, there was only a 5 mph difference between the tests and my argument is still I think it's unfair to call the canyon the king of mpg when the ram got 33.5 and not 28.8. I'm not even a ram fan. When ford enters this market I'll be the first in line. I'm just saying I don't think this video is all that fair

I'd like to see this exact test but with a 4x4 3.6 gas Canyon/Colorado...do you have plans to run that?
@leadnsteel
@leadnsteel 8 жыл бұрын
+bkpugsley That would be a good mashup. Gas vs diesel mpg and price comparison. I think the gas version only gets about 20 or so mpg so with a diesel you'd be getting an extra 10 mpg. On the toyota forums the new taco people are reporting an average of 21mpg with the v6.
@bkpugsley
@bkpugsley 8 жыл бұрын
+leadnsteel Yeah I would love to see it...I was thinking 22-24mpg for gas. I only drive my truck about 3500 miles a year up to 5000 miles max if that...so I think a gas model is what I need but I really want to see more testing on it first.

This GMC canyon can still be improved in terms of hp and torque in S.E. asian countries this engine is available for the chevy colorado it is a Duramax engine with 2.8L so the current GMC canyon engine can be improved by around 200hp with 500nm of torque cause that's what we get with the 2016 Chevy Colorado...

Bare minimum for the diesel engine, 2WD, shortbox is $36,520 SLE trim. 4WD makes it $40,435 from GMC's site. Still a lot, but GM knows diesel fan boys will pay it.

So is a half ton truck still what it will carry in the bed or the body size?
@jamesbeaman6337
@jamesbeaman6337 8 жыл бұрын
+Greg O'Brien Now it's more about the body size and a truck's payload in relation to the "3/4 ton" and "1 ton" models. They carry quite a bit more than 1000 lbs or 1/2 ton now.
@kevin113423
@kevin113423 8 жыл бұрын
+Greg O'Brien Calling trucks half tons or 3/4 tons is a carry over from back when that was the actual payload capacity. These days they're used more like classes.
@bahamatodd
@bahamatodd 8 жыл бұрын
+Greg O'Brien With about 1500 lbs payload this truck is actually a 3/4 ton. The Ram ecodiesel goes down as low as 1000 lbs payload so you can get a 1/2 ton if you want... lol.

@gregobrien6912 8 жыл бұрын
+Todd Wilson thanks for the replies, id be tempted to import an eco diesel to here but id probably overload the bed, is the back suspension more for comfort than payload then?
@bahamatodd
@bahamatodd 8 жыл бұрын
Greg O'Brien The Ecodiesel is in fact built more for comfort and fuel efficiency. Also they did not add much capacity when they added the heavier diesel powertrain (compared to the gas models). How much payload do you expect to carry?
