The biggest market for these cars is basically the middle east, Russia and Australia. Driving on sand dune for leisure, which is basically what they're used for in the ME is greatly benefited by long travel suspension, offroad tires and high torque - the sort of set up you can get on many SUVs including range rovers, Jeeps and G wagons. In Australia, the main requirement is reliability and sheer hardiness of componants due to the vast distances between outback stations and of course corrugations - something few cars besides the Landcruiser do incredibly well.

You know without saying that its a dumb american review on something as awesome machine as land cruiser, that its something no one wants to buy. The world market is not only America. The world and this earth is not called America. What doesnt sells in america doesnt means that its not bought elsewhere. Not all the people living on the planet have tunnel vision about the world as americans do. Land cruiser is not only the best selling SUV in Australia but also in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. But then Americans make to most incapable metal behemoths they call SUVs and badge them 4x4 to add injury to the insult. What would they know about anything outside America.

thank you Steeve. very informative review like always. however just want to point out an important information about how rare is the Land Cruiser as you mentioned, well maybe in north america, but it's not the case for big part of the world, precisely the middle east. for example here in saudi arabia we're one of the biggest car market in the world and guess what ... Land Cruiser has always been the most popular car for ages. in a country that each family has to own an SUV, there's no comparison between american or european SUVs to Land Cruiser due to two main facts; first the Toyota is much durable and capable to the rough hot wild environment and better maintenance. second due to a big favour to the LC that it handles the sandy desert and dunes very well! in contrast to big commercially successful car SUVs that can't handle a mile in our dunes and sandy desert (like Range Rover, Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer and etc). thank again, and just wanted to clarify an aspect that am sure large of north american citizens don't appreciate in assessing capable SUVs like Toyota LC or Nissan Patrol. regards.

I drove one of these recently with the intent to have something a little less flashy than my G550 which I actually take off road. I wish the Cruiser had a throatier exhaust and a locking rear differential. The 4Runner has a locking rear diff, I have no idea why something twice as expensive doesn't. Also the departure angle is rubbish but they make off road rear bumpers that fix that problem, for now I'm keeping the G.

I think the price of the Land Cruiser is mostly what makes it less popular here in America. When a person can get a full size luxury SUV with more of a luxury name behind it for 10,000 less why wouldn't they. Land cruiser is for the very well off financially who want or need a very capable off road vehicle. Which again most here don't need. Except for Alaska , parts of California, Nevada , Arizona there aren't many places that are remote enough where people actually go that would require a vehicle like the land cruiser. 4 wheeling here is more of a hobby than everyday life. The 4Runner SR5 or TRD Pro is basically the same in off road capability for half the price making it much more popular here in America and most of the 4Runners still never see real off road driving, because as I said before 4 wheeling for most here is a hobby.

Love LC, especially the older ones. Not sure how this example is a "proper off roader". I can imagine that as a 4x4 with some good electronic traction aids it will go off road. I can also imagine the body damage and trail of plastic bits being left behind. Not to mention the weeping noise coming from the cabin as the owner realizes that his expensive rig is quickly depreciating with every ding and lost plastic bit.

Good day mate from the land down under. Would really love a cruiser but they are way too expensive, and down here hold their value really are, so even a two or three year old (with high mileage as most of them are) cost an arms and a leg. In Aus, many come equipped with the 138 litre tank (over 36 gallons), down here there are places where there may be no petrol station for many kms/miles (in one place I think its 300-350 miles). In the bush, as you probably saw its always one form of cruiser or another that is on the road.
