As an RS owner, I love all 3 cars for sure, if I have a lot of money, will buy all three and a M2, M2 for drifting build, golf r will be my daily drive because its automatic and its comfortable. Focus RS will be my project car, civic type R will be 24/7 ready to go if I wanna have a little fun on the track :)

that have been COMPLETELY blown out of proportion because of social media. count how many documented cases there are against global production and youll see its not as widespread as youve been lead to believe. it seems like that simply because the cracked blocks are a catatrophic type of issue.

I don't get how they said that the Focus RS is the fastest... It isn't. It might be fastest off the line hence the best 0-400m time but if you look at the trap speed its actually the Civic Type R that has the highest speed. On top of things its the Civic Type R that holds the faster time around Nurburgring so again, how is the Focus RS fastest out of this 3? And NO I'm not a Honda fan boy.

Focus RS is the one you will love. I have had Integra R, STI, GTI, and a 2017 WRX...and now the Focus RS. It tromps on all of those cars, it's just a beast. Faster, more fun, great looking! Go stealth grey! Got a 10 and an 8 year old in the back seat too, so damn practical lol!

Great review of the 3 cars and one of the honests I've seen so far. In 2017 I chose the Honda Civic Type R and I am happy with this car up to this date. Its extremely relieable and performs well in every-day-use and also if I want to go faster. I only modded the air intake system to get a little bit more sound out of the engine, the car is in stock much to quiet for its amazing exterior.

Something that no one seems to realize is that the Type-R has the best power to weight ratio in the class because it's engine is underrated. It's not making 300 at the crank, it's making 300 at the tires. That means that it's a lot faster than the rest from a roll. On top of that, C&D got it to do a 4.9 second 0-60mph time and a 13.5 second 1/4 mile. It's as fast as the rest from a dig, if you know how to work it.
@AP-lh1bq

The CTR is an amazing bit of kit in a butterface package, everything about it screams 15 year old kid. The Golf R is on the other end, everything about it screams mid-life crisis without enough bank to get a muscle car. The RS hits the sweet spot between the two. Which is why after driving every one of these I bought the RS.

Good video. Own a Golf R in the UK and agree with this. It’s well rounded, comfortable, subtle, fast & massively capable but hasn’t once put a big grin on my face on a twisty road. It also bogs down hugely with the manual & I’m gutted I didn’t go DSG. Not sure I can cope with the type r looks & the focus is soon to be replaced and looks dated especially the interior. Hoping the new Megane RS is decent so I can swap up!

For me its the Golf R, although I do like the RS a lot. What draws me into the R is the "Sleeper" status it has, I currently drive a Chevy SS (or as you Aussies call it the Holden Commodore) and in the US the SS looks like every other Malibu or Impala but packs a 6.2L LS3. I like how the R is very refined, inside and out but packs an AWD turbo punch.

That would be an interesting test! The Civic Type R is a bullet once in gear, which you can see by it's trap speed at the 1/4 mile, which was faster than the other two. We did do some rolling acceleration tests from 80-120km/h where the Type R was quickest (3.0sec) followed by the Golf R (3.1sec) and Focus RS (3.2sec). Above that, though, the torque of the Focus gives it the edge. It's the fastest to 180km/h and beyond.

Dont forget 10 hp make a little difference we have the watered down version and if you tune it to the same power of the rs which is only a couple hundreds then which one will be quicker . 41hp difference, imagen giving that edge to the type r you'll see everything change drastically but give it to the rs and its argued witch is quicker lol

Focus RS for sure! After owning two STI's(11&15), WRX(12), 13 Evo X MR, 16 Audi S3(same powertrain as Golf R) along with some other high performance cars. The Focus RS is by far my favorite. RAW, fun and very consistent. Nothing can touch this thing from a dig. The AWD system and hatchback design really make it the perfect hot hatch...one you could actually use and have fun with in any weather. It's not perfect, but it's a pure joy to drive.

Daniel Newman If you press the suspension button on the stalk next to the steering wheel, you can change the suspension to “comfort” mode. I would say the ride is “bumpy” but no where near as harsh as my 2017 M3 with Comp Pack.. with suspension in comfort mode.

Nothing can touch it from a dig? Haha, the Golf R here was just barely slower, with no launch control shenanigans like the RS has. On top of that, the Golf R is clearly the car that has the best top end speed, because it shortened the gap the TS had from the better launch. If the Golf R was DSG, it would’ve eaten the RS alive. I still rather have the manual, but you only get launch control with DSG, which would be a fairer race, seeing that the RS has computers launching the car.

WeekEnd133 Well actually the Type R is the strongest at the top end (and of course, rather irrelevantly, has the highest top speed). The Civic has the obvious weight advantage and owners have been finding that it's actually underrated.

Ranking a hot hatch only by its level of fun is what’s killing the hot hatch segment. A hot hatch is meant to be the jack of all trades and by ranking them only by fun you miss out on the useful information that the people who buy these cars actually care about... if I wanted to spend 50k and “fun” was my only priority I would just keep my supercharged BRZ...

Start of video talks about not just wanting a car for the track but something you can live with every day, then picks the most uncomfortable, less refined of the 3. That's not to say the RS is bad by any stretch but seemed an odd conclusion given the initial parameters.
@RJL1000
@RJL1000 6 жыл бұрын
Apologies - perhaps the parameters could've been clearer. At the start of the video I give pros and cons of the cars (and mention the RS as being perhaps not as the easiest to live with) as a way of setting up each one and explaining their positioning, not necessarily to talk about what we're testing. What we wanted to find out is, essentially, which car is the most fun. That's why the conclusion says, "In the battle for ultimate hot hatch excitement..." - that was our yardstick. Yes, the Civic Type R has set a Nurburgring lap record, but I say it needs to be the most engaging car on the road because that's the real world scenario most people will get their thrills from each of these most of the time.

I think its such a cop out to say straight up that the DSG is a 'girls car' or 'not as fun or pure' without any proper reason... Every person is different and likes different things, and I think that diversity should be encouraged, it inspires new ideas and creates strong car culture... I don't find my DSG Golf R any less engaging than all the manuals I have owned before it, but it does trigger a different thrill. Manuals are raw, and require more effort, though the DSG is so fast and allows you to focus on things like perfecting your cornering and pushing the car that little bit closer to its limit, it is one of the most addictive and enjoyable things! And I can't go without mentioning the symphony of sounds from up shifts and down shifts through the DSG! All 3 of these cars are fantastic and everyone will prefer something different, which makes the car community so great! The fake enthusiasts to me are the narrow minded ones that only like 1 brand or type of car and put down everything else

"over the last 20 years"...Type R has only been a thing for 25 years. Are you saying the likes of the FD2/JDM EP3 and DC5 are soft and diluting..?
@RJL1000
@RJL1000 6 жыл бұрын
The Type R brand has been diluted slowly, mostly because Honda hasn't had the money to spend on niche models like it used to. Obviously the NSX started Type-R on a high note, and the early CTRs - EK9 and EP3 - were truly great, but each generation since has used a cost-cutting torsion beam rear suspension, rather than an independent setup like the originators, and that's a backwards step. The new CTR is the first to feature a more sophisticated IRS setup, and it's better as a result. Not sure I agree about the DC5. It didn't move the game on significantly from the outstanding DC2 before it. The DC5 is another successor to something great that remains overshadowed by the original. And then what happened after that? Honda was broke after the GFC and the Integra was watered down to nothing at all. Should we talk about the Accord Type-R...?
@jaydizzay
@jaydizzay 6 жыл бұрын
Sure. I'd argue the second generation Euro R was more hardcore than the first. Fair point on the DC5, it wasn't as hardcore as the DC2 but to call it soft is a gross overstatement in my eyes. Are you from the US, where they only got a softer non-type r dc5? Because, if you are, i suppose I'd agree. I'm from the UK and only really know what was available here, plus the JDM imports, and I'd stand by the statement that to call later Type Rs soft is daft.

I'm from Australia (that's me hosting the video), and we've had a mixed bag of Type Rs over the years. The first two generations of the Civic Type R weren't officially distributed at all. I don't say diluted to mean soft, I mean compromised, or lacking the concentrated purity of the original trendsetters. The first Type-Rs were built with no holds barred. Honda did what it took to make sure the fundamental engineering of each platform was as unspoiled as it could. But the later generations were degraded for cost reasons, Honda had to hold station financially, and that was a shame. The 10th-gen Civic (and this fifth-gen CTR) represent the first examples to arrive since Honda got back on its feet and started investing money in the core fundamentals again, and that's why it's exciting. I appreciate your considered comments on this video. KZbin doesn't always deliver that. I hope I'm making some sense with my replies!

The Golf R is ahead of the others in build quality, the interior is much more refined and sound insulation miles ahead. Feels like a premium car, its probably the least exciting car to drive fast though and the most boring to look at. Some people look for cars like these so it has a market for sure. The Civic in my opinion is the best hot hatch of the 3, because its made to be a driver car like no other, i m not a fan of the looks but it has been growing on me over the time. Its on pair with the Focus on a roll, probably even faster, it has the best dynamic of the 3, the best chassis tunning, its the perfect track weapon so in my opinion its the best one. The Focus is really good looking but thats it. It sounds bad and weights too much, handles like a pig on a track, and do not forget the big problem with them , the engines dont last more than 15 k miles, so beware.

The Boost Cave get one! Got mine in September this year and have not missed a single opportunity to drive it every day. The way it pulls just amazes me every time I drive it. I have the 2017 model and agree with everything this review mentions EXCEPT the ride height. Mine sits very low and I think it may be because of the type of Recaro seats I got with mine (I have the combination leather / cloth option).

Focus RS - Weak Engine design prone to failure. Stupid to buy these now, hence why FORD have killed the engine at those boost levels. Golf R - Great allround car, but lacks rawness and enough engagement even in the manual 6 speed. Civic Type R - Best choice. Fun to drive and engaging. FYI i currently own a Golf R and have driven all of these. Civic Type R is the best.

This video makes the golf r look like a joke. Which is far from the case. Get the dsg (if not, a better driver for the golf) cause that's the most underrated hatch. Golf R for the win.

The guy that runs the Ford performance / RS road car division is a tiny little shortarse. That's why the driving position is so high in the Focus ST, Focus RS, and Fiesta ST. I saw him in the development videos for the RS. Wee little man. He also has no idea how to tune suspension. The Fiesta ST (that I have) and the Focus RS both have very poor matching between spring rates and dampers. The ride in both is unacceptable. Thankfully there is a company out there called Mountune. I have their springs installed on my ST and it they have transformed the ride into something that is actually liveable. Ford performance does many things well, but their suspension tuning is garbage.

Interesting! That may be true, but the explanation I've been given (and believe) by Ford is that lowering the fixed-height Recaros would mean resubmitting the RS for individual homologation, as a hip-point change effectively alters the crash structure of the car. Imagine how the driver's location changes relative to the pillars, dash, bulkhead, etc. The Focus gets crash tested as a range with a median seat height, that means in cars with height adjustable seat bases it's not so bad, but for the RS with fixed seats, dropping them down would require re-engineering and independent crash testing, and that's just too expensive for a niche, value-driven performance variant. Aftermarket solutions exist for people who can't live with it.
@JBOsurf
@JBOsurf 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks I had no idea about this and it effectively explains the issue with the RS seating position (pardon the pun!) meaning the seats are not height adjustable at all. However, for my ST, it has adjustable height Recaros. The problem is that the lowest position isn't low enough. If other manufacturers can get this right, why not Ford?

RexSpec555 totally agreed. Especially for car people it seems so understated. Funny enough though I've had a lot of people say it looks fast and racy - generally cos it's a little lower, plus the four exhaust tips look aggressive af

RexSpec555 that stealth look though appeals to many folks. Plus get the R with a DSG and it will beat most cars in it's class not only in speed but over all practicality. If your 20 yrs old you may not care about practicality but if your married and have 2 kids and only can have one of these 3 cars? The R will be your choice here. Then if you want to upgrade with a tune OMG these R's are super fast.
@RJL1000
@RJL1000 6 жыл бұрын
That's understandable, GERMAINE, as most people will buy the R with a DSG, but in that guise it's not really a Focus RS or CTR competitor as the other two are only available with six-speed manuals, and the Golf becomes quite a bit more expensive with the auto. We wanted to keep things as even as possible in terms of pricing and spec.

The Type R looks as if it’s designer got frustrated trying to come up with its design while drawing on paper, so he crumbled up the paper, threw it on the ground, then looked at the crumbled up piece of paper, and was like, “by golly, I think I just found the new design of the Type R!” Lol 😂😂😂

Decent review but I couldn’t help feel that it was somewhat of a middle finger to VW. I’ve driven two out of the three vehicles here and have been a passenger in the civic type-r. With that said the VW is by far the best choice out of the three. #GrownFolksHatchback
