I found out that there's actually Honda service bulletins for two of the most common CR-V issues: the CR-V shift knob breaking and the glitchy touchscreen. According to the service bulletins, Honda will simply replaces the shift knob with a new one and there's a software update for the touch screen that's supposed to rectify the glitch problem. If any CR-V owners experiences those two problems, stop by the Honda dealership and Honda will fix it for free.

I also agree this was a good review. I like the fact that they also talked about the negative aspects of the car as no car is perfect. From a functionality for the price stand point, the crv is a great value. I recommended and helped 3 family members buy one. But I agree w Amy silliman that this class of crossover tends to feel unsubstantial. I personally much better the midsize crossovers.

@Dranite gamerz the Mazda is more sporty and has a diesel option. For family and luggage the CRV wins. The 1.5T seems pretty good (it's still a new engine type though) but the standard 2l is fine, though a bit heavier on gas and more sluggish)

Driving 2017 CRV EX-L, mileage 83,000km. In the first year, my transmission button also popped off, and my dealership fixed it and noted a few people came in for that. 6 months later, Honda Canada had a recall for the shifter so I got it replaced a 2nd time (free of charge). Fuel economy is around 9L/100km in city, and 7L/100km on highway (but easily can go down to 6.4L/100km if mostly on highway). I never had the oil dilution problem but Honda Canada had a recall for it in early 2019, so there was a "fix" for that. So far, it has served our family well and totally agree about the roominess and great for car seats, booster seats.

We buy by wife a new vehicle every 5-7 years. In early spring of '17, I happily sold the '12 Kia Sorrento (minor issue to serious problems non stop). We both love older vehicles but if course, she can have that but I need her in a "without question, doubt free reliable vehicle". The thought of her getting stranded, injured in a car wreck etc is my worst nightmare. Did research and laid down about 27k for a '17 CR-V. It currently has 205,003 miles on 'er. I am the only one that maintains our vehicles. Therfore I can honestly tell you I know exactly everything that has been done with Reba (yeah, we are a "name our vehicles couple"). With just over 205k miles, the exterior looks exceptional. Zero fading with the paint color cote, zero clear cote damage/peeling. The trim is all there and the only sign of aging is the black and dark gray plastic and composite pieces are slightly faded. But with some "Mothers" brand 'trim restore' it looks new, no fading visible. The interior has aged gracefully. She wears heels (RE Agent) so carpet on driver side floor board has holes worn in the carpet, padding and fire retardant insulation underneath. Floor mats fix that. Lol. Anyways...... Mechanically? The 2.4 NA and that CS Trans are an amazing duo. Not an excess of power but, plenty to get up an on ramp and accelerate to 75 in less than a half a day. Even loaded up with my wife, daughter 2 dogs (Alaskan Mal @110#'s and golden retriever @ 78#'s) and suitcases with enough clothes to be gone for a week. Even me, a muscle car guy. Actually I am better than that, the cream of the crop muscle car guy, a MOPAR guy. So unlike Chevy groupies i actually know what power feels like. Anyways, even i will say that Reba, although not a power surplus, does not leave you wanting 30 more ft lbs and hurse purrs. The engine starts quickly, idles smooth as a Singer sewing machine and revs while in idle are snappy. Transmission shows absolutely zero signs of slippage, shutter, hesitation etc. I'm not exactly sure what the symptoms are of a CST on its way out. I assume some things are universal with automatics. No burnt smell with the fluid, no metal shavings or clutch pack debris on the service plug magnet et..... I'll admit, it's one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. And I have confidence in Honda (besides being my favorite import along with Ford lol), that it'll keep my wife n daughter safe and not stranded. The exterior, paint body look REALLY good along with the fit and finish is better than decent etc. She is never self-conscious or embarrassed to meet clients at a showing or have it parked in front of an open house. Anyways.... long story long, this vehicle has been the least costly per mile to operate of any other SUV and most Sedans ive owned. Secret? No secret to getting yours to last a long time. For having it look, run and drive for 200+. Just routine preventative maintenance. Change the oil, change the oil, and change the oil. My '98 'Burban has 235,000 on the clock by the way. Runs great like a SBC 350 tends to do.

We have '17 CRV EX-L AWD with 34K on it now. Haven't experienced the screen problems, and average 29 mpg thus far, but then we don't live in that cesspool call LA as we are the Portland OR metro area. Pretty good review and conclusion. Only matter not mentioned....road noise. A forever Honda problem usually rectified by non OEM tires. Pretty damn amazing cars, adequate power, excellent handling, stellar space....

Have the 2018 and other than oil dilution recall it has been bullet proof. Love the infotainment screen much more than models that have an iPad sticking out. Never once hooked up the steering wheel volume button. Never once collision warning. Not once. Mileage has been outstanding, especially in the city. Economy works great, not back in the seat power.

We also have a 2018 it is dumping gas in the crank case. The dealer didn't want to do anything to it and they said there's no recalls/bulletins for that. Houston, Texas, so it doesn't happen all the time. What did they do to it when it was recalled? Do you live in a colder weather? Thanks.

2018 EX front wheel drive in FL with 21k miles. Oil dilution is a thing, and the 1.5 engine HATES short trips. A couple of runs to the grocery store and the oil smells like an old gas station. It takes regular runs of 10+ miles at highway speeds to burn off the gas. The engine is very efficient though - 33 mpg so far, 35+ on the interstate at 75 mph. But with the gas in the oil I don’t know if we’ll keep this past 6 years. We just had our first screen glitch that went on until the car could be shut off. Apparently holding down the volume button for 10 seconds reboots the screen. It’s only happened once but doesn’t bode well.

Count me in with the transmission shifter button issue as well. I have gotten about the same MPG as you in Philadelphia but I am driving the AWD Touring version. I really like the Full opening rear doors. Its very easy to get stuff into the back seat with them. I havent had the issues with the entertainment head or the grill shutters. I think Honda really cheaped out on the tires. I am a big fan on the interior. I think its much more upscale feeling than either my 2017 or 2019 RAV4's.

My personal vehicle is a 2018 CR-V AWD. I agree with all the positives here: massive cargo & nooks, easy ingress for older parents, adequate AWD system with winter tires. The negatives match the video: poor fuel economy, glitchy infotainment that I avoid and prefer CarPlay, occasional creaks and rattles in cabin. I cannot speak to the oil dilution on 1.5 L turbo because I got the CR-V serviced, as part of a recall in Canada, within 2 months of purchase. I live in Canada with horrendous winters, so keep it in mind when I expand on the fuel economy. In city driving during summer, I average 9 L/100 km (26 mpg); highway driving during summer is 7 L/100 km (34 mpg); city driving in -10 C (14 F) is 11 L/100 km (21 mpg); city driving in -30 C (-22 F) is 13 L/100 km (18 mpg). I compared all the fuel economy numbers with ECO mode off and on, and noticed no significant difference.

Thanks for the great info. I live in Canada also , Winnipeg to be exact . Do you mind me asking how well the interior would heat up when it’s -20 or -30 outside? I’ve heard some owners saying they only get heat if they are on the throttle.
@Epitopi
@Epitopi 3 жыл бұрын
@@gmcimpala It takes roughly 15 mins to heat up the interior at -20C, with 5 mins of warmup in the driveway and 10 mins of slow driving around the block. For -30C it's about 20 mins. No need for smashing the throttle.

That "Fuel Dilution Problem" on the 2017 & 2018 CRVs was due to fuel condensation within the engine cylinders in extremely cold weather. It did not happen in mild to warm climates. It was NOT a fuel leakage problem, and it was handled by a reflash of the vehicle computer software. Fuel dilution has ALWAYS been a problem in vehicles driven in cold climates and with short trip driving. That kind of driving might be the hardest on engine oil, requiring more frequent oil changes.

Fuel dilution was only prominent in cold climates. That’s why there are those grill shutters. The engine displacement is so small that in cold climates, it takes a bit for the engine to heat up and stay warm. Here in Florida and Southern California, we didn’t experience any oil dilution issues. In fact, my Florida dealer said he only had one CR-V in for that issue and the customer was a snowbird from Canada. Also, if you have a 5 mile city commute, the car is never going to really warm up and will exacerbate this issue. Thanks for the great review Carlos.

The touchscreen has sensitivity settings. Mine in my 2017 CRV was twitchy until I set it to low sensitivity and no more problems. My shift button also broke, haha. ..and it has not been flawless. ...the CR-V in our recently launched Rankings pages, placing the CR-V first in the small SUV class. But that doesn't mean life is all wine and roses with our turbocharged runabout. Most notably, we're still having issues with the infotainment system, which has always been one of this car's greatest weaknesses. .. ."While (Edmund's)on a trip heading to San Francisco, I encountered an issue with our long-term CR-V. Almost three-quarters of the way up the uphill grade on the Grapevine [a six-mile section of I-5 north of Los Angeles known for its sustained incline], a 'Shutter Grille Problem. Power Reduced' warning showed on the instrument panel. It felt like engine power was robbed and that throttle response was highly diminished... "On the way home, almost on cue, three-quarters of the way up the uphill grade on the Grapevine, the 'Shutter Grille Problem' warning showed up again on the instrument panel....But the touchscreen problems haven't gone away. I listened to a podcast for a while on the drive home and decided to switch over to Jack FM. As soon as I switched the audio source, the touchscreen refused to switch to any station so I was stuck listening to 'All Things Considered.... "Driving to dinner this weekend, I was honored to experience the touchscreen glitches noted by Calvin and Ron back in November. The screen brightness would fluctuate randomly between its brightest and darkest settings, then flicker and black out entirely. Even resetting the system didn't solve the problem. "Shortly after the touchscreen problem started, a bunch of error messages jumped onto the driver information screen. A number of active safety systems failed, including forward collision mitigation, road departure mitigation and adaptive cruise control. These glitches also popped up on my way home a couple of days earlier. But the touchscreen system hadn't failed that time, so it seemed that the two issues weren't related. In both cases, the safety system reset itself and worked again after about five minutes. "A Google search of the safety system and touchscreen issues finds that our experiences are well-documented by other drivers. At the time of publication, Honda has not issued any recalls or technical service bulletins addressing either problem." .... "Recently, our CR-V had an issue with a broken transmission shifter button. I have no idea how this sort of thing could happen. It only goes in one direction (horizontally), and these things are usually hard to break. Usually. Consider this instance unusual. At least that's my thought..... I showed them the broken shifter button, and the adviser said, 'Wow, that's the third one I've seen this week.' (Insert befuddled look.) So I asked, 'Why is it that this is the third broken shifter button you've seen this week?' All I got was a shrug.... I had the same thing happen to me when I was trying to adjust the screen's brightness level. I was trying to switch from the night setting to day, and it didn't react. It only caught up in response while I was already driving. The brightness option notification popped up and disappeared a number of times in a very glitchy way, I suppose, to accommodate how many times I poked at it trying to elicit a response. "By the way, at night when I was trying to dim the screen via the touchscreen, it didn't work. Even when I swiped it to the dimmest setting, it didn't alter it at all. And the default brightness is super bright when driving at night, to the point that your face is lit up as if by a spotlight. So I ended up turning off the screen. Boo." - Caroline Pardilla, senior copy editor "I also got to experience the glitchy touchscreen problem. It hiccuped twice for me, once at night and once during the day. During both instances, the screen brightness menu would pop up and randomly select brighter or dimmer settings and day and night settings. More annoying, though, is that even when the screen wasn't flickering, the glitch simulated an input on the screen, making the rest of the touchscreen unresponsive." - Calvin Kim, vehicle test engineer "The CR-V's screen brightness setting started acting up with Apple CarPlay connected. It acted as if I was pressing the button repeatedly, alternating between day and night modes and displaying a blank screen at times. This isn't the first time this vehicle has been glitchy with CarPlay active. I did a quick Google search, and it seems that this crops up on other late-model Hondas. There doesn't seem to be a fix from the factory yet. I like this CR-V quite a bit, but this infotainment system would be a deal-breaker for me." - Ron Montoya, senior consumer advice editor

Since Edmunds has tested this and the RAV , which stands out for all the usual small suv needs , but need ability to daily handle dirt/hilly roads as well. The Rav Adventure seems to have a better mechanical awd system over the crv but from your reviews I wondered your thoughts? I like the refined inside of the CRV and space in both over Mazda. Love the Mazda but need a little more cargo space for car camping on weekends and the Rav still seems to tick all the boxes. I can live with the buzzy engine of the RAV if it really performs better off road. Yep, should consider subaru, but I need to feel good knowing possible worry free car over 100k vs possible cvt and head gasket continued issues. I keep cars for 10 years and past crv and rav have proven themselves with incredible reliability and hope the current RAV holds to that???

They sell over 1,000,000 of these world wide every year. 400,000 in the USA. I wouldn't get to bent out of shape because 30 to 50 out of 166 peoples have posted negative comments. I'm sure alot of them are legit remember, 400,000 cars per year for at least the last 10 years. I'm sure some are trolls that read something and just want to pile on. ie; the oil issue has been addressed and resolved or at least tells what causes the problem and if a person falls into the category they should consider a different car. My wife has been driving CRV's since '97. She now has the '17 exl. Our gear shifter broke. That has been my experience with most new things be it a car or a toaster. Most products have to be tested by the consumer in the real world and then the manufacturer works out the bugs. Also our screen was glitch y before it was fixed. We love the car. More than we could have hoped for. If it were a bad car, we wouldn't be on our 3rd one and Honda wouldn't be selling them like hot cakes. Uncross your fingers and enjoy your car.

Like the gentleman giving the review, I have the same 2017 CR-V, purchased it in March 2017, and currently has about 37k. I live in AZ and have the all wheel drive model. I had the exact same frustrating flickering screen, and like this gentleman, could not reproduce the problem at the dealership. I got the idea to record the issue with my cell phone next time it occurred, and by doing so, the Honda dealer advised there was a recall with that issue and fixed the problem. I would add the 1 main negative are those cream microfiber seats. They may look nice initially, but every stain, dirt, and color from clothing transfers to the seats. And if you have kids in the backseat, forget about it.

My 2017 CRV Touring had a problem with a dead battery. Attempted recharging the battery. No luck. Replaced the battery with a Die Hard ($150 + tax). The battery has no manufacturer, nor warranty(i.e. months); where it was manufactured. From what I am hearing the life expectancy is (48) months. When the battery is low, all of the warnings will display, not to mention that it won't even turn over.

My 2017 had that issue occasionally and it was impossible to replicate for the dealer, but they had heard so many complaints that they replaced our touchscreen under warranty. The HU uses a really ancient "forked" version of Android OS and a crap CPU with no ram, which is why it's sooo laggy. Supposedly dust or fingerprints on the screen made it freak out sometimes.

I am leasing a 2017 Honda CRV Touring AWD in Canada and coming from a small sedan loved the big ample space and high driving/sitting position. There were few good things and some bad things that I faced. The good things were the spacious passenger opulence and the big cargo area. The four wheel drive system of course and the modern technology a few years ago was great but now seems outdated. Now the bad things are that I too faced the same flickering and beeping audible noise from the entertainment system which I usually noticed when the sunshine glares or shines on the screen; hated that because it was annoying and it could potentially be dangerous on highways because it's distracting and who would always pull the car on the shoulder to switch the car off to reset the entertainment system. The other thing is that the fuel mileage was also not that great, just as you (Edmunds) recorded. I'm looking and reading Toyota's RAV 4 Prime and that SUV looks great and also the fuel review is good kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4Wlm3qIh5Jroc0 Hopefully once this lease is up either I'm gonna finance the Toyota RAV 4 Prime for fuel efficiency or a bigger SUV such as Kia Telluride or Hyundai Pallisade (more bang for the bucks)

I had the 2017 EX didn't get the EX-L because having leather seats, it's just too hot here in Southern California. Where do I begin, same headunit issues, it would go crazy, beeping rapidly for over 2 hours in a trip where I couldn't stop to pull over to reset. I showed dealer, 3 times, finally fixed it, or so I thought and before I traded it in, it was still doing the glitchy. Turbo blew at 30k miles, brakes quickly wear out I'm told by dealer. Having a flat on this car will cost you $90, stranded in Utah, put the spare on it, took it to a tire dealer, they repaired it. Just charged $20 for the repair. As I get home, all and I mean ALL lights went on, check engine, brakes, ECC, LKS, you name it. Stopped the CRV, turned it off, turned it on, still all the lights. I take it into the dealer they re calibrate the computer, charge me $70. "Isn't that covered under my extended warranty?" "Nope" (don't get the extended warranty). I asked them "why all the lights?" their answer, "oh it just does that when there's an issue" So that light warning doesn't tell you anything. I traded it in for a 2020 Subaru Forester. No problems yet.

We have a 2017 touring version of the CR-V with about 23K miles on it’s 1.5L turbo engine (it’s currently July 10th 2020 and we’ve been sheltering at home since mid March). We have had 3 problems so far. 1) an annoying rattle behind the dashboard that took three visits to correct. 2) the navigation will not allow access while the vehicle is moving. (This is problematic when the passenger needs to change destinations etc.) 3) in mid June our air conditioner stopped working. It’s covered by the warranty but Honda service has yet to obtain a replacement stainless tube that failed. They told us that it was due to coved-19 manufacturing delays and they have 4 other customers with the same problem!. Again the car only has 23K miles!

Not very good for the best in segment. ...the CR-V in our recently launched Rankings pages, placing the CR-V first in the small SUV class.

I have a 17 Ex with the same screen problem based on my experiences my guess is that it’s caused from the screen heating up after prolonged run time. To stop this from happening go into settings and drop the screen sensitivity to low, this will prevent the problem from reoccurring 95% of the time. With regards to the screen quality because it’s an android OS you can change the screen “skin” to some really nice ones instead of using the basic blue one everyone hates on. You what’s REALLY annoying when you ACTUALLY own the CRV and ACTUALLY live with it EVERYDAY? Is the fact that the head rest is fixed in place and doesn’t even have manual ratcheting adjustments like a base model Ford Fusion from 2012 did. Thankfully a cover and memory foam fixes that. I could go on but...

For a number of years, I planned on a new CR-V when the time came to replace my preferred 2003 Acura Cl-S. I'm getting too old to get in and out of the Acura. That time arrived late last year, but by then a CR-V would never be mine. They had the well known oil dilution problem. Honda's extension of the warranty doesn't address the problem; it just puts a 6 year life on your car. For all practical purposes. Honda has declared that they are not going to fix this core problem with the engine. Oil diluted with excess raw gas will destroy the engine bearings, meaning the cost of a new engine, which leads only to the junk yard. Add the odd and unhappy performance inherent in little turbo charged engines, and Honda's no more than average quality CRV transmission and there is little to recommend the car. I bought instead a new Passport. It has a great proven engine and a real transmission. There is a lot more car, better features and a much better build quality. I paid about $7500 more fo rthe Passport than I would have for a same level CR-V, far better value.

I HAVE A 2019 HONDA CRV-EX-L-AWD. I tend to USE the ECO to SAVE on the GAS. I am at 28.1 mpg so far and find that the FUEL ECONOMY COULD BE BETTER. The FUEL ECONOMY COULD BE WORSE but, that's why TOYOTA USES AN 8 SPEED AUTOMATIC (UP FROM A 6 SPEED) in 2018 on down. As TRANSMISSIONS GO HONDA MAKES A PRETTY GOOD ONE. Hondas CVT ISN'T PERFECT THOUGH (THOUGH RELIABLE) IT does tend to drone and there's some lag. The 1.5 liter motor needs it because the motor's so small it could not get out of it's own way without it. I can say with MY CRV THAT the AUTONOMOUS BRAKING LIGHT comes on at times (and there's nothing there.) The INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM could BE QUICKER, and DURING THE WINTER MONTHS i REMOTE START MY CAR for 10-20 min. to warm up. The AWD SYSTEM IS GOOD for TERRA FIRMA (forget about rock hopping) but, i think other makes and models have caught up though, THE HONDA CRV IS STILL A RELIABLE CAR THAT HAPPENS TO COME WITH REMOTE START(that you can REMOTE roll down the windows and open the sunroof.

My 2017 EXL has 40,000 miles on it and has been mostly trouble free . It gets great mileage, almost always over 30 and as much as 33-34 on trips on fairly flat ground. I live in Reno, Nevada at 4400 feet and often go to the mountains at up to 8800 feet and the car has as much power as I need. My shift button broke as well and the original tires wore out by 31,000 miles. The original tires on my F250 with four wheel drive and aggressive tires went to 50,000, so I am not impressed with Hondas tire choice. I now have Michelins which will certainly last longer. Oil dilution seems to be minimal as the level on the dipstick hardly rises between changes. On several occasions the gauges lit up with warnings, usually on mountain roads. The car continued to run fine and I discovered that it only needs to be turned off for a minute and everything goes back to normal. Imagine the folly of thinking that self-driving cars are viable given the current technology. The car has lots of room and runs great. Coming back from Vegas last week I had several occasions where speed exceeded 100 miles per hour when passing several cars and the engine handled it adequately. All in all, the car has performed very well. No rattles, leaks or excessive wear. I recommend this car to others.
@tomcez

Unfortunately, my 2017 has oil dilution, about 1 quart over in 3000 miles. Cannot be good for bearing surfaces. I think it is caused by one or more fuel injectors bleeding out the high pressure each time the vehicle is turned off. Others have said there is a leak from the fuel pump at the connection to the camshaft that drives it. Honda says the engine was designed to dump in excess fuel when the engine is cold. But the fuel in the oil does not go away with long freeway driving. Honda should make our cars right by replacing components until it is fixed to match the ones that do not show any fuel dilution, but they do nothing. I will not buy another Honda product because of this poor customer service and lack of warranty protection. The CR-V is not really big enough to handle what I want, but I was trying to save on fuel use. Next vehicle will be a larger SUV that is either plug-in electric or fully electric.

Wow if that gets confirmed that's scary. I thought it was just the normal blow-by (enhanced by low-pressure reduced friction piston rings, and the turbo boost pressures).

@@asylumslaves i totally forgot about this post at 260,000km the turbo blew up taking out the engine in the process total to fix it 16k. Needless to say I did not fix it and will never buy another Honda as long as I live. I have had way better American cars my mustang lasted 420,000km head gasket and the electric steering rack were the only issues.

Fadic4 wrong. Di doesnt cause oil dillusion. Di has intake valve gumming up issues, which toyota solved with their d4s engines

I skipped this model and got a Rav 4. The 1.5T engine was my concern, I would expect expensive repair at around 100K miles.

we have a 2019 touring. its ok... my dads rav 4 is better on gas, and I dont like the CVT trans in the Honda. Sheet metal is thin and you notice it when you wash it.. Car is comfortable and drives well. No real complaints, but i doubt I would buy another one.
