The Elantra has, for the longest while, been one of those cars that effortlessly glides in under the radar. A great choice for private investigators and anyone else who would rather not be noticed too much. It’s a solid choice for the sensible buyer too, with minimal issues and low running costs. But neither of these things is what a petrol head looks for in a car. Instead, they want something that stands out a little, something that gets them noticed and they don’t mind sacrificing a little in the way of comfort and dependability in the name of excitement.
And that’s why the new Hyundai Elantra Turbo Elite Sport caught us completely off-guard. It’s still a dependable, reliable and comfortable compact sedan but with a whole lot more to write home about.
At first, you’re greeted by suave, sultry styling, mimicking the i30 in places, but setting its own tone in the process. The changes to the body on the Sport model offers a little more for the eye and is sure to interest those with a passion for motoring. Can you see the Lexus-inspired design work in the rear?
The cabin is a treat with a high level of trim and a luscious red leather upholstery that certainly made us feel as if ever push of the start button was an occasion.
Then there’s the engine, a sprightly 1.6-liter turbopetrol engine making 150kW and 265Nm torque. More than enough to keep even the ardent enthusiast entertained.
So what more is there to like about the Elantra Turbo Elite Sport? Well, the price. All of this for a mere R399 900 - and it’s backed with a class leading warranty and service plan.
