spacers are only illegal if you change the wheel track, lc70 wheel track in the gov system is recorded off the widest point which is the front. So if you only make the rear match the front, you're not altering the vehicle track, thus legal.

As much as I love the Landcruiser for its simplicity, when you step back and think about it, for the price you pay you get next to nothing apart from 4WD capabilities and virtually when you get one the owner has to spend thousands on modifying it just to get it up to scratch, severely lacking in interior, still living in the 80's (but thats why some love it), for a car that expensive to be lacking in IT, nice interior, wheels, safety features, decent seats, some air bags. And only now they have cruise control? Yes, extremely reliable though, Lucky they have thousands of fan boys coz it's really not actually worth more than $40,000ish.

@h0uz3t00b7 жыл бұрын
Change emissions to a level that is not street legal for newer cars anymore. Actually not much of an issue out in the bush, but small particles from diesel engines are a problem in the bigger cities, therefore those DPFs are mostly standard now. Some newer cars even have urea injection systems to keep the nitrous oxide levels below a certain level. People want to get rid of those systems as they cost some performance (like catalyzers do) and seem to be all unecessary to them.

I'm in Perth. I have a 76 GXL 2015. I Love it. Pro's: Love the bonnet, Love the new 5th gear , Love the bonnet. Nice new seats, love the new bonnet still,,,,, Thats about it. Cons: Dont like the DPF, Dont like traction control, rather mechanical LSD but I can see why they did it for compliance. Now, the Jury is still out on the following: The injectors. Have they changed them due to the alleged Denso injector problem and Toyota blaming the poor fuel or is that B/S.Somebody please educate me on that. That can be a costly exercise and might even incur a new engine!!! I have placed another water separator filter before the factory fuel filter. Am I safe with that. The bloody rear track width,,,,They should of done that!!!!! Grrrrrr, Cant wait to see the up-grades,,,,, Thank you for the up-load,,,

Hi Ronney your issue with the DPF is what happened with the original catalytic converters way back when!! they were setting fires all over farms and bushland in aus as they were reaching temperatures of 600-700 degC. I believe thats why factory cats are either ceramic coated or have a heat shield.

With minimal maintenance that should last a lifetime. Our 1997 4Runner Limited is long paid off and it runs like the day we drove it off the lot with more than 350,000 miles currently. I had a 2002 Sequoia Limited that I sold that had 190,000 miles trouble free miles. Our newest Yota is a 2013 Highlander Hybrid Limited with 150,000 miles and it still gets close to 30mpg even with my heavy foot. We tend to buy all our Yota's new and drive them into the ground. My family has owned numerous makes over the decades but we eventually settled on Toyota for their reliability and high resale value even at 10 years old. My next Yota will be a 2020 Lexus LX 570.

The only time a DPF gets hotter than a cat is when it's doing it's burn/cleanse. Highway driving will normally allow the ecu to start dpf clean automatically. That accessories fuse box is for when genuine accessories are fitted so all the fuses are in the one spot and you don't have inline fuses coming off your battery.

@Chris-dz8dm8 жыл бұрын
The DPF systems have been confirmed to start fires. Modifications to the exhaust is very difficult because it upsets the pressure sensors and the ECU. Not sure how Toyota will treat warranty with modifications to the exhaust. Piezo injectors are used because of their ability for super fast operation that is required by the DPF systems. Hino systems can have up to 5 injections per cycle. Australian fuel is of very poor quality compared to world standards, good fuel filtration is very important with common rail systems

Just for comparison purposes. I measured these same points for both the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (Hard Rock edition JK series) 2 door and 4 door versions (I'm in America...so export versions may differ). The wheelbase of the 2 door measured right at 8 feet. The 4 door measured 9' 9". The wheel track front and rear for both are right at 70", or 5' 10" (interestingly the same as the Landcruiser in this video). The clearance to the bottom of the differentials (front and back) are 9.5" with the stock 31" tires. Both 2 door and 4 door Jeeps here in the US run a 3.6 liter v6 (gasoline engine) that puts out 285 horsepower and 260 foot/lbs or torque. I had to find an conversion site to figure out the readings from this video, but it seems the Toyota puts out 146 horse power and 258 foot/lbs of torque. To reverse the equations, the Jeep puts out 212Kw and 352 Newton meters. Of course I've not dyno'ed my Jeep, I'm taking the stats from here: www.jeep.com/en/wrangler/capability/ The output to the rear wheels could very well be less. I have both in my garage, I did the same sort of tape measurements Ronny did in this video and no I'm not saying one thing is better than another or anything like that. Just thought some folks might want to know how the new Jeeps compare.

Having a DPF isn't a problem, just make sure don't park on areas where grass or sticks are likely to catch fire. Our 4x4 fire trucks all have DPF's, and we know not to ever park in long grass. But that common sense applies to any vehicle parking on dry grass.
@denisleblanc45068 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the Toyota auto hubs but the old North American auto hubs don't disengage if you have it in 4 wheel drive. For them to disengage you have to shift in 2 wheel drive and they will eventually disengage. To disengage you have to drive the opposite direction in 2 wheel drive for about 10 feet. In other words, the wheel has to turn faster than the shaft it's attached to. The big problem with auto hubs is if they suffer high shock while engaging. In other words, if you get stuck in 2 wheel drive, put it in 4 wheel drive and give it the beans immediately. You will wreck them. You had to gingerly rock it back and forth several times to make sure they were completely engaged and then you were good to go. It was not the best system for here. I do like that Toyota have added a manual locking capability. Just lock them before you go wheeling and then you're sure to have them ready if you get stuck.

The rear track is smaller so weight in the tray is centred more over the wheels as possible as the cruiser floating axle setup often sees the bearings or hub fail due to overloading causing the axle and hub to slide out of the diff. The old girls are common for it so I think this is their quick fix for it while keeping the 3 tonne GVM where the older models are only 2800

Crikey, our 2003 (2.7) and 2005 Grand Cherokee (3.0) has piezo injectors. Great review, but I'm surprised the power output is relatively low considering the engine capacity. As for that DPF Ronny, pull it off and you'll see a massive jump in economy and performance. If they're not required by law get rid. They also cause issues when the get clogged up, they have to be driven at high rpm to keep the heat up and for it to burn off the soot. I think the front end reminds me of the Isuzu trooper/big horn from a few years ago.

dont think the dpf will be a problem as their is plenty of petrol vehicles out thie with catalysts that get to similar temps and are not causng fires out bush. also the piezoelectric injectors are a crystal which when applied with a small electric field it expands opening the injector when it is discharged it returns to its normal state this making it a quiet and efficient injector DO NOT UNPLUG when testing with vehicle running as this could cause the injector to completely jam open causing run ons etc.

Toyota doing the bare minimum, I guess that's how they afford to keep such a low sales volume vehicle around. I've been told the hoods are proprietary and the only way to get them is through toyota. the DPF is hard on the motors and I would highly advise their removal if you buy one equipped with them. water crossing wont effect it at the scoop, the older version has the same scoop just smaller. Its the snorkel that is the main issue, with a proper snorkel you should be able to cross with water more than halfway up the windows, given the conditions are good of course.

Why do they put a snorkel on it if its not waterproof?
@Ronny_Dahl8 жыл бұрын
+dylan burnett it's just a raised air intake to get away from dust and sand.
@dylanburnett96588 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, thanks for the reply.

dylan burnett even though it could save the car from shutting down in emergencies or river crossing I think
@rickjames94778 жыл бұрын
toyota just says that to cover their ass, you can take the snorkel apart silicone all connections and be fine doing crossings

Ronny Dahl . what is the difference if i have the ram facing front or backwards? in what direction should the ram be facing if it's raining and during dusty days because i live in the middle east. thanks and keep up the good work 👍love all your videos

is there any technical reason why Toyota engineer made the track width different between front & rear axle?
@1FiftyOverland8 жыл бұрын
Hey Ronny, you maybe surprised that my 2015 Ford f150 has a 2.7l v6 twin turbo gasoline (petrol) engine that makes 209kw and 448n m at the rear wheels stock! That's 281hp and 340 lb/ft of torque.
@scottbarton58248 жыл бұрын
yes but at what cost, Do some homework as to longevity
@1FiftyOverland8 жыл бұрын
I know how the 2.7l ecoboost is built. longevity, and durability is not an issue. The engine was designed for the long haul, as it is built using materials, and technology that the 6.7l powerstroke uses to dominate here in the US.

So many people that I know here in canada are still having to do a valve job at 20-40,000 because ford sold there design work to the lowest bidder, without doing some of there own r and d . I have loved fords and other brands all my life, but right know I would not buy ford chev or dodge.And just the laws of physics will tell me that when in towing mode that little motor is working overtime especially on the downhill no torque to hold them back.Of course Im still driving a 1995 f150 4x4 with 400,000 and dont plane to change any time soon 300 six carb and c6 .Its not new but no factory warranty to get blindsided you when they dont cover you.The 6.7 is another story. Im not trying to down your truck I just feel we are being short changed when it comes to new vehicles.

Great video and really pissed off they didn't fix the track. Wonder what its like looking over the bonnet. Hopefully there will be one at the Perth 4wd show as coming down from Broome.

Do these auto locking hubs mean the front diff is always being turned by the wheels? Doesn't sound very economical if it is.
@Agnelum17 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but I think the auto diff only engages when you actually throw it into gear and it disengages again when you shift into reverse. I just saw a video before this one where the guy talked about the difference with Auto and Lock.

Thanks Ronny! Is the alternator still down low where it's likely to be effected by mud and dirt? Or have Toyota moved it up higher?
@PerthDieselPerformance8 жыл бұрын
Still the same spot. We have sealed alternators if you go through a lot of mud and constantly changing/cleaning them though. A lot of mines are now running these.

luv the Bonnet and thats about it. everything else pretty much seems the same. will be inyeresting to see if tbere are perfomance gains due to the new injectors and any restrictions due to the DPF ? agree with everything you said regarding wheel track and vhild restraints and a 6th Gear and im certain Most 79 series owners will agree. thanks for the Vid Ronny great as always

Wish we had them in Canada as well. Worked in Africa for years as a driller and loved these trucks. Excellent diesel program.. Well maybe with jeep coming out with there 2019 wrangler pickup truck it may spark toyota to wake up and make there trucks available here in canada Not a big jeep fan but it will be the closest thing close to the landcruiser i can get. To bad jeep will end up selling more than 100,000 units before end of first year in USA ,wont be able to keep up with demand.Please Toyota respond to this and bless us here in Canada
