How to sell cars in 2016: Slap LEDs on it
@Cobb
@Cobb 8 жыл бұрын
I think it was dumb that they ever put halogens on the FRS should have been LED or Xenon from the start like the subaru had.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 8 жыл бұрын
Price point was too high back in 2008 when the car was being developed. Even in 2012 LEDs were very expensive and not as effective as HIDs. Now LEDs are much cheaper and more effective.
@Cobb
@Cobb 8 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but it was jointly developed with Subaru, and unless their contract stated they couldn't use the xenon in the FRS, they had already floated the development cost for the vehicle to have xenon headlights, and the subaru had that and gps over the FRS for only a few grand more.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 8 жыл бұрын
Cobb Yes it was in the contract that Toyota could not install HIDs or navigation. Toyota got around that with the type 10 FRS.

Man you guys be hating on the lack of power. It's not focused on power - it's focused on handling. It's meant to take corners fast, and if you can't take corners fast you will lose a race every time, regardless of how much engine power your car has.

Let me show you with a 2002 Honda S-2000 that has 242 hp 17 years ago. Blow the doors off this slow pig and I will pass you in the corner going 10 mph faster. Now I have same drivetrain in a 1972 510 Datsun that weighs 2000 lb and runs circles around the Honda S-2000. We have a road race at the Rally on Sat in Starkey Fl with the Datsun and there will be a Toyota 86 there... o Boy!!!! I love the Toyota 2000 PU much better then the BIG new ones with no HP. Try again Supra using a Bimmer engine, what next??

It’s also great on gas, and looks nice. Which are the highest selling points for me. I’ll wait until I’m 25+ to buy a 500+ Hp car, until then my insurance will kill me, gas will kill me aswell.

I'm glad that Toyota refuses to put a turbo in it. Cause this car, like the AE86, is focused and handling and vehicle dynamics, not 0-60 times.
@phgamer4393
@phgamer4393 8 жыл бұрын
yea but cars are getting better and if you willing to spend more like the camaro ss you will get both. I understand though from a very base perspective this is a good car but cars are getting better and i think some people are willing to pay a little more for some more basic niceties/performance.
@TheAravindtop
@TheAravindtop 8 жыл бұрын
PHGamer If they were willing to spend more money, than that's great, get the car you want that has more torque, hp, and low 0-60 times. However, if you complain about this car not having a turbo, you don't deserve to own one. It's meant to be a car you can enjoy in the corners. Plus, this is one of the last few cars you can easily modify, so you can add a turbo to it if you really want to.
@bboymonk3y
@bboymonk3y 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! People who complain about the power only cares about going in a straight line lol! Because this car is meant to be drift car. Want a car that goes fast in a straight line? Don't buy this car, plain and simple. Handling>Power. This is why Mustangs hit crowds.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 8 жыл бұрын
I think Toyota and Subaru are staying in there lane. A turbo BRZ would not be able to compete performance wise or comfort wise with the BMW2 or Even the Mustang GT. Adding a turbo would SLOW response and add at lest 300 pounds of mass. Don't tell me a turbo weighs 10 pounds. Everything must be upgraded and strengthened. Most of all the cooling system and the brakes. I would not by a 34k Turbo BRZ. Would you?
@phatnum17
@phatnum17 8 жыл бұрын
300 pounds? wtf what turbo system are you thinking of? at most 75-100 pounds of weight would be added with the turbo, intercooler, oil lines and needed charge pipes..

Wow wow wow all the comments.... I can't even.....there is a thing called power to ratio....and 205 hp from a 2 litre na engine, not exactly that crap.. what it lacks is torque and that's what made the car 'feel' less powerful, but it's in no sense a slow car, I mean change its rubbers u can get from 0-100kph around 7 sec, manual of course. Getting smoked by minivans? Come on guys.... How many of you have ever driven around a track??? and why is a mx5(miata) a faster car while this remains a slow piece of shit?? I mean I expect Americans to wine about horsepower but I didn't expect all the comments to be like that....

@unresolved777
@unresolved777 8 жыл бұрын
nhilal94 Don't dismiss it, look closely at it, it does have a slight "wing like" projection from the body between the black faux vents. Toyota has said the new black plastic canards on the side of the front bumper increase grip, & new grill opening has also reduced lift. Likewise as the guy says, the rear diffuser is also functional. The car as a whole was designed like this, from hood line, to roof bubbles, so I wouldn't dismiss it easily, maybe slightly functional, but still functionality.

You can buy tires the day you take the car home. A set of High performance summer rubber can be had for $500. With high performance rubber on the twins the mileage would go down along with tread ware. The price would go up. Better they put cheap tires on so Lexus would not be embarrassed. Get excellent real world mileage. I get 29 mpg overall. Let the folks that want the car get it at a cheaper price. Most folks if they touch the tires are going to put larger rims on anyway. NO EXCUSE for the Limited not having better rubber. Not even offering it as an option. The sad part is with better rubber the 86 could most likely outrun and out handle the MX5.

+1001speedster On open, twisty roads, yes. In 90% of driving, I'd actually prefer the extra power of the Camry. That's how underpowered the 86 is. There's no doubt the 86 is a brilliant handling car, but that doesn't mean the it isn't a disappointment. The engine completely lets it down.
@1001speedster
@1001speedster 8 жыл бұрын
Skipper Want power? Tune it up yourself. The 86 has a pretty good engine that has various mods available, and that's the whole point of the 86, it's meant to be driven on twisty roads just like the amazing MX-5.

@skipper5951 8 жыл бұрын
1001speedster There are plenty of cars I can modify that aren't overpriced. Besides that, why would I modify a new car with a warranty and at the top of it's depreciation hill? Most people don't. If I'm going to rip everything out and build it the way I want, it's going to be on something cheap and nearly junk. There's a reason why these cars are selling so slowly and it is because they're a terrible value.

The car does need a 2nd power option else it will go the way of the Dart. The Dart was severely underpowered. And though this is more of a driver's car, unless it can catch up with the Miata (i.e. lose weight or add more power to counter the 500 or so pounds over the Miata) it will struggle to pull in new buyers. College grads can't afford it with low paying jobs and high debt, thus the target market goes to the next bracket and few are interested. My buddy does autocross with an FRS and all he complains about is how the new Miata's are tearing up the track.

I have an RSX-S. I've been contemplating about getting a new car. The 86 seemed liked the best car to replace my RSX-S with it size plus all the bonuses like it's RWD, handling, and newer technology. Well, as soon as I sat down in one, while it drove a little better than my RSX-S (with Tein coilovers), the interior was so sub par I couldn't justify purchasing the car. My RSX-S interior, which is 10 years old still looks light years better, especially in the quality of the materials. I know interiors are only a segment of the car, it's this bad. So, now I'm looking a V-6 Accord coupe with a manual: it's faster, handles decently well, a nice two tiered interior, and a lot more amenities and superior build quality. Add to the fact it's only 4,000$ more I just can't justify the 86 for that price.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 8 жыл бұрын
You will miss engine also. Both cars weigh about the same and have the exact same wheel hp. The RSX -s pulls far harder after 6000 rpm. The twins have better power below 6000 rpm. The fact that the twins handle far better, have killer seats and have a better driving position makes up for the crappy interior. You are right in the fact that all the BRZ and 86 are is a RWD Integra.
@ErwinSchrodinger64
@ErwinSchrodinger64 8 жыл бұрын
fatboy19831 You're right and it's something I should of mentioned as well is the seating position in the 86. It's low with a nice view of the road. One of the 1st things I noticed. Matter of fact, it's so good if I decide to keep my RSX-S, I will probably buy aftermarket seats. Something is just telling the next generation 86 is going to be that much better, maybe even revolutionary. I take it you owned both cars? If so, which do you prefer overall?
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 8 жыл бұрын
1czelaya I was down to the RSX vs the Celica back in 2000. I went with the Celica. I was picking between the base cars not the GTS and the S. The S is a better car than the GTS but I liked the base Celica better than the base RSX. The ride ,driving position and handling was better. The Celica also weighed over 200 pounds less. Not as solid a car but I got 300,000 miles out of mine. The RSX had a ton of room on the inside the cabin was quiet compared to the new BRZ or the Celica, The S has one of the best 4 cylinders ever made. Stock the handling is not as good as even the Integra before it. Having said all that if I were in your place I would keep the RSX. Keep it as close to stock as possible. I do not think there will ever be another affordable engine like that ever agin. The Twins are wonderful. Toyota and Subaru built the engine on a computer to get certain specifications. The engine has no hart. The RSX mill is a beauty designed by someone that loves all things mechanical.

The 128i drives better 90 % of the time. When you max out the BRZ it is a dream. Push the BRZ hard and it has much better reflexes and feel. The BRZ is a better 2nd car. Even the previous gen V6 Mustang with a live axle rear end turned in a better road course time. Toyota has never been able to figure out how to compete on the American sports coupe market because they always want too much money for how much car you get in return and this car is no exception. Before Scion folded up tents the FR-S was doing good to sell 1000 FR-S a month. At 20 to 23 grand this car is perfect. At 27 to 32 grand it's an utter ripoff and that's right where they have it priced. Not to mention that the Subaru boxer engine in this car is known for oil consumption and the Subaru boxer engines in general have a tendency to blow head gaskets around 100K miles or so. I'm sure it's fun to drive, but in my opinion I wouldn't waste my money at this price range. All the badge changing and nifty wheels in the world are not going to fix what is really wrong with this car.

I paid 26k for mine back in 2012. With standard navigation, hids and limited slip. Back then you could get the Mustang 6 with the track pack for about the same price. That Mustang was much faster than the BRZ. Now the Mustang gained 6 gained 200 pounds and the track pack is no longer available. It may hang with the twins for one lap but it is no longer faster. The Base price in the 2017 BRZ is 25.5 k. How in the hell is that a rip off? What other RWD car can you get with LED headlights , limited slip, navigation, killer seats, not to mention a 2700 pound curb weight for 26 grand? Subarus do not blow head gaskets any more that was back in the early 2000's. Even if the twins blew a head gasket every 100,000 miles they would not be the Pyle of crap the Pony cars are at about 80k. The Mustang 6 weighs 900 pounds more than the 86. At its base price of 25k it is a striped down marshmallow. You must pay almost 30 grand for the turbo 4. The Camaro is a far superior performance machine over the twins. Agin add any options and you are easily at 30k and up. You cant see out of the Camaro and it weighs 750 pounds more than the twins and has LESS room for the driver. You feel like you are sitting in a bath tub. At 26k the twins are your ONLY LIGHT WEIGHT RWD COUPE OPTION. The Pony cars are fantastic fun. The quality and long term reliability can not match Subaru or Toyota. It is not even close.

I'm glad you like your GT86 fatboy. It's still an overpriced under powered torqueless wonder. We could go back an forth all day about whether or not it's a better car than the Mustang or Camaro or not. It isn't. Subaru's still blow head gaskets and they still burn oil. They just recently settled a class action lawsuit for oil consumption and it wasn't 10 or 15 year old Subaru's. It was 2014 and 2015 models included. And I'm not trying to defend the reliability of the Mustang, it's shit, but it will easily out perform the GT86. I'm glad you like the killer seats, it's probably the only bright spot in the GT86 / FRS interior because the rest of it is ultra cheap and looks like it was designed by an 8th grader with an etch-a-sketch. You know it's bad when the Mustang interior is head and shoulders above your car lol.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 8 жыл бұрын
Red Horse The Mustang has an excellent interior. Oil consumption is a problem with Subarus. At best 3% of the cars. 97% of us have zero oil consumption problems. 50% of Porsche owners have oil consumption problems. No No No No. The Mustang is not even close to as reliable as the Twins. The 2013 twins was the most unreliable cars. Every car after has been better and better. Even so The only Ford made today as reliable as the BRZ/FRS is the F150 truck. Everything else is crap reliability wise. The Mustang is worlds better than it use to be. It still looks like it was assembled by hamsters. There is a reason why you can buy a 12 second car for 32 grand. Every part is made to a price point. that price point is as cheap as possible. The Mustang GT is the best performance deal on the planet. Everything starts falling apart at the one year point. A Subaru at 200,000 miles is more solid than a Ford at 30,000 miles. Even the cars that blew their head gaskets.

something about being able to be outrun by a Toyota camry just dosent sit well. I'm in a sports car and I'm a fair match for a Toyota corolla. It's not about how fast the car can go, it's more about how fast it can recover speed while still being controllable. 100mph in a honda civic is the same speed as 100mph in a bugatti. It has to be a balance of power, cornering, and braking. the BRZ/86 tend to favor more towards cornering and braking, leaving more to be desired. On twisties where high acceleration is not required it's great, but once you hit open road, you might as well get everyone's phone number, so you can tell them if there tail lights work.

Car is good, but it would be great at 220HP and 220-250 lb/ft of torque. It will smoke anything in the class of "sporty under 30K cars". Please test drive a 6 speed manual and let us know about all the driving improvements vs the older model...Does it handle better ? Is the trans shifting better ? Is the torque dip lessened ? Has the steering feel been improved ? What rpm will show on the tach at 70 and 80 mph vs the older model, now that the rear end is 4.3 instead of older 4.1 ? Putting the changed looks, interior and exterior aside, would I be wise to upgrade to the 2017 Manual from an older manual, due to a better overall driving experience ?

I know this is going to sound offensive, but as somebody who drives that road all the time (in an 86 with a stock engine, no less), it looks like you were driving ~*way*~ too slowly to start having a discussion about how "well balanced" the car feels. I regularly drive at least 50% faster in those places while still driving at about 7 or 8/10ths. Don't sit in the car begging the manufacturer for more power while idling along at 45mph half-way up the tach-- start by using the power that's already there. If you're "not comfortable doing that on the street," do what other reviewers do and take it somewhere off the street, or get the CHP to help you close a road for a little while to do your shoot. Also you're nowhere near "sea level." Just because you started your drive by the beach doesn't mean you didn't ascend to a considerable density altitude-- that road gets up to almost 5,500' MSL in places and it's the hottest time of the year in Southern California: I wouldn't be at all surprised if the density altitude at the top of that road was ~8,500'. Even for the locations that made it into the video (around 3000' MSL) the density altitude could easily have been over 6,000'. Again, as someone who drives up there all the time, the decreased performance at the top of those hills is very noticeable. It may be less than you're used to on some roads in Colorado during the summer, but it's nowhere near sea level. Also, having a dealer dude talk at length about how fake fender vents help with cornering does not help the video. Also why did you talk about all the new features and the 5 extra horsepower, then drive the AT car that doesn't have the new engine? Basically this video is not great.

This car really need some boost, but at least Toyota is slowly getting back into the sports car scene. For that price and that type of car I would much rather get the Focus ST, the new Miata, or the mk7 GTI which is not only cheaper, but it has better mpg, way more fun to drive, and more horsepower ( 210hp to be exact), and if you opt for the performance package you get bigger brakes, an active LSD, and an additional 10 more horses(totaling of 220hp). There is hope for Toyota though returning into the sports car scene now all they have to do is bring back the Supra and they could be in business.

Who buys this car anymore? It's too immature for grown guys and too expensive for the 20-30, it's fucking like 30k!!!!! For 200hp! It's a pointless car, you can easily buy a used Porsche for 25 to 30k

Did I hear that right at 1:20, fender vents help with body roll and "control-ability" of vehicle? I'm guessing the new 86 badge is where Toyota was able to get that extra 5hp from last years 2016 model with 200hp according to this guy.
