I enjoy your reviews. I owned a new BRZ for a year and your review of it was spot on. We all know this is a Subaru engine and It sucks if you were serious that Subaru would be reluctant to give you cars for review because of your honest criticism.

What we learned here is that...the reviewer is a moody person. There's not nearly enough that has changed between 2016 and 2017 for him to have such a negative review for the 2016 and sing the praises of the 2017.

Well I'll take your word for it, if the sound can make that much of a difference! It's hard to tell from the videos but it doesn't sound all that different. Sorry I still think you were just having a bad day when you tested the BRZ because your attitude is night and day over some relatively subjective matters

The price is too high. You can buy a used 2013 frs for under 15k with about 30k miles. Then you can spend 8 grand on a turbo kit and have way more fun for the same as this new one.

What gear in the 6MT is the 1:1? In the Miata, it's 6th, and the GTI it's 4th...so which gear in the FT-86 is the 1:1? Do you think they are still piping intake noise into the cabin to "enhance" the performance sound of the car? Is shifter feel improved over the previous version of the car? no flat-bottomed steering wheel...I'm surprised. Also, I think it is hard to build a car for the enthusiast and the general public. Building one to satisfy both means lots of compromise for each category of consumer. Did Toyota/Subaru do a good job of catering to both sides?

It does sound better. If you plug the sound tube on the older car (in the passenger compartment) and add cold air it starts to sound very Honda like. Just an electric wine up to 4000 rpm then all hell brakes lose. Around town you don't hear a peep from the engine. After the car brakes in it sounds a tad better also. If you really want the boxer sound you must go unequal headers and cat back exhaust with an aftermarket tune. With the right exhaust it then sounds like a small block v8. Not to mention the 20 or so wheel hp that will add wile all but eliminating the torque dip at 4000 rpm. 25 or so lb-ft or so boost @ 4000 rpm.

revisiting because this car (86/brz) is interesting and despite me considering a VW wagen, the art and fell of driving is what I want out of a/my next car which must have a manual. not that I would be disappointed with a wagon, I still like driving and this car has potential (the ND Miata does too); however, it has many aspects/quirks that I'm not really fond of (see driver's seat not going back to original position after being flipped forward; my GTI's seat goes back to the original position). I just wish there weren't so many pieces/parts that need "upgraded" to bring out the real potential this car has, engine power aside.

All these people complaining about torque/acceleration If you want better acceleration get smaller *lighter* wheels- 15-16" and better tires. World of difference.
@streetsandpeaks3013
@streetsandpeaks3013 8 жыл бұрын
gorrilaunit99 Ha, ha! I put on 19" 30/275, coil overs and strut bars and it grips like a Porsche. This car isn't winning any drag races so don't fight it, make it corner even faster.
@gorrilaunit99
@gorrilaunit99 8 жыл бұрын
Streetsandpeaks The bigger/heavier the wheel/tire combo (unsprung weight), the worse your acceleration (and most cases overall sped) will be. Wheel size doesn't determine grip. The actual tire compound/tread, Air PSI (with relation to unsprung mass/ tire section width), and aspect ratio (minimally) will determine your overall coefficient of grip.
@streetsandpeaks3013
@streetsandpeaks3013 8 жыл бұрын
gorrilaunit99 Do you have one of these cars? My set up is @20 lbs lighter than stock with Rays Gram Lights wheels and I run 19/30/235 up front and 19/30/275 in the rear with the Nitto NT05 all round. Yes, the already slow acceleration may be a touch slower (but my tune has remedied that) and the reality is same corner speeds are up 5-10km/h. Check out Tirerack or Speed Academy (or frankly anyone who has set up these cars) and they all agree . Have ever seen a Porsche with less than 19" wheels (stock) and 11 or 12" rubber? Usually people on KZbin who talk up small wheels drive Miata's or Honda Civic's ... what do you drive?
@gorrilaunit99
@gorrilaunit99 8 жыл бұрын
Streetsandpeaks I doubt 19 inch wheels are lighter than the stock or 16" wheels (also the tires will be heavier). That's because Porsche's are *heavier*. The *sprung weight and suspension geometry* transfers to the tires contact patch in cornering loads and Porsche runs a lower PSI on their tires. The frs/brz is not a Porsche. Unless you change the suspension geometry/weight or PSI, you will not get a higher coefficient of grip. Go to a skidpad and compare the same tires on different wheels (19" vs stock). www.tuneruniversity.com/blog/2011/04/wheel-tech-part-ii-size-matters/ a good read for you

The one we drove was 100% stock. A lot of the journalists chased after the TRD equipped cars but we wanted to see how the base car was improved or not, over the last year's model. The TRD stuff is good, but icing on the cake.

all of the fa20 motors are manufactured in a Subaru plant, and shipped to Toyota for the Scion or Toyota Branding. only thing new about the 2017 manual 6 is the aluminum intake plenum on the engine. The automatic ships with the old intake plenum. Yeah you better stay away from those Subaru Motors that are shipped to Toyota ....

TestDrivenTV I suggest listening to 9:15 to 9:40, where you imply they are different engines being manufactured and to stay away the Subaru version. In you mow down you basicly contradict yourself. exhaust is also not new its from from last year's model, and the valve train and crank is all pre-existing from last year model. They had to revise the first years model to resolve a rocker spitting out of the engine head. The world already knows the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota GT86 or Scion FR-S is a collaboration car, I was just personally roasting you on your comment about staying away from Subarus bud. Supplier part numbers don't always mean there's actually changes to the measurement of the parts on the car or in the engine just suggest you come from a different source. Have a great New Year's!

AND... what you fail to understand is that an 01 s2000 when new in 2001 was around $32k. That's around $43-44K in today's money. The s2000 is in a roadster category above the GT86 and in it's own league, really. The s2000 was also developed at the time to compete with the Porsche Boxter and BMW Z3 and pretty much decimated them in performance over those first few years when introduced. There... I learned ya somethin'.
@danielmilosevic1991
@danielmilosevic1991 8 жыл бұрын
wouldnt you rather spend more and get something worth the money? Also 200hp its not competing with anything....even a civic si has more power than that and its not a roadster...not to mention reliability. the gt86 had more than a few shares problems and even lemon laws with their fuel pump going out etc. i can be driving my mom auto accord and not worry about it pulling on me. it needs atleast 250hp to even considered to be competitive. thats just my .2

Let me tell you from my personal experience. Hopefully one day you'll remember my words. Not all cars are about horsepower numbers or 0-60 times. Back in the day, I used to be a muscle car guy and made fun of Hondas with my Mustang 5.0 for the lack of torque and HP. Guess who now drives a 2001 S2000 and prior owned an RSX-S? Me. It was more fun "to" me to drive a slower car fast than a faster car slow on a daily basis. I drive the hell out of my s2000 and it's still a bit too fast for public streets before I start breaking the law -- excessively. This is the same reason why the "slow" Miata is a huge success around the world. It's the driving experience, light weight, and ability to drive the hell out of it at full RPM without getting in trouble on a daily basis. For a daily car, the GT86 has enough power/weight balance. The chassis and handling is tight, and you can wring it out on your back roads while putting a HUGE grin on your face almost like a Miata -- almost. This is just my experience and opinion :) Also, once you try to take a turn in your moms accord you'll under steer into a tree -- I almost did this as a teen. No comparison between rear wheel drive sports cars and a front wheel drive family cars.

I test drove some new Mustangs and they feel like big, unrefined pigs compared to the 86/BRZ. And frankly, I wasn't even all that impressed with the Mustang's power. There are a lot of other cars I'd rather have at that price point. The Ford Sync infotainment/navigation system was very impressive though! But anyway... to each their own.

So pay 25k for chassis and ditch motor and pay 16k at least for motor n boost just to make the car ok all around. 41k at minimum for that and thats not including upgrades, suspension, visual etc, hmmm at that price I can think of some better cars.

JIMBO SLICE No really, you just need 40hp more and more torque(turbo or compressor -->can be between 3500/6000 euros),that's in case you need that power because really, the fun thing is to push the revs and have to work for the power. If you live in a place with nice roads you don't need more power than what it has, it's really fun to drive it stock. For me it's better to have something like this than a 300hp turbo hatchback.
@JBWHITEGT
@JBWHITEGT 8 жыл бұрын
Ok dude...to each his own. In my eyes the engine is too weak for what the car is asking for. Good chassis but the car is overpriced. If they made the FA20 capable of handling 500hp without building the motor, than 25k for that car would be worth it. The FA20 can barely handle 325hp before it starts to eat itself.
