The midsize pickup segment is heating up, and the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado are at the forefront of this resurgence. We pitted the two against each other to determine which model better suits your needs.
*Our comparison tests are different from most in that we keep the focus on comparison, not competition. We don't pick winners and losers because the right choice for one buyer is the wrong choice for another. Our goal here is not to tell you which small car to buy, but to make it easier for you to decide which is best for you.

@coureurdebois
@coureurdebois 8 жыл бұрын
vaajchang true, the canyon will have a better interior, ride comfort, build quality but it will fall victim to GM's reputation in the resale area, though most people who buy trucks keep them far longer than mid sized sedans so resale value is not quite as important as cars and yes, the tacoma is meant for more sporty things so off road goes to tacoma.
@scottwilkins
@scottwilkins 8 жыл бұрын
Resale is based on public opinion, not reality. Reality is both trucks are 1 for 1 at the end of ownership for the average trade in for their quality and ability to hold out to the next owner. But I do say the GM interior in either the GMC or the Chevy will look better than the Toyota.

I have a 2011 Tacoma 4x4 DCab. I bought it brand new and gave right at $30K for it. It's 7 years later, I've put 68K on it and have taken very good care of it, no dings, new brakes/tires/battery etc. and well maintained. I could sell it private for about 22-23K, try that with a Chevy Colorado in 7 years, just saying.

To each their own test drive, I guess. I drove both the new Taco and the new Colorado (gas). The Colorado feels much livelier when accelerating. The Taco, while solid feeling, accelerated very deliberately; it felt at least a ton heavier than it is. Both seemed mostly fine in terms of ride quality, at least in my area. IMO both trucks are nice, but I'd probably get one of the GM twins because the rear seat headroom was better, and its more suited to a range of situations, as opposed to mostly off-roading. If I were camping and off-roading all the time, I'd get the Toyota.

I really like the Toyota's appearance over the Colorado - both inside and out. My limited experience with a new Tacoma ended when I could NOT dial-in a comfortable driving position. I am 5'6. Between the low seat and a steering wheel which doesn't telescope out far enough (the limited steering column range being a common Toyota trait) I was unable to consider the vehicle any further. The Colorado has excellent seat and steering column adjustability to accommodate all body types, and provided me an optimal driving position with no effort.

Canyon and Colorado currently sit in 8th place on Consumer Reports' list of least reliable new vehicles, so there's that..... Meanwhile, Tacoma's rugged dependability is legendary. ***** The frame rust issues, and subsequent bent frames, were solved by a recall years ago. But of course, the issue is always front page news, the resolution is bottom of page 9. Just like the unintended acceleration fiasco. After an investigation by the DOT, Toyota was found not at fault. Turned out the issues were caused by owners installing incorrect floormats. But, Toyota bit the bullet, recalled millions of Toyotas to shorten the gas pedals to protect people from their own stupidity. But tell me GM fan boy.. How about that GM recall that caused over a hundred deaths and many hundreds of serious injuries? How they hid it while people were dying until they couldn't hide it any longer?! Yeah, no big deal. A few people with bent frames is SO much worse

GM makes my favorite full sized trucks, and favorite trucks overall. For instance I would rather own a brand new GMC Sierra 1500 over ANY other truck, regardless of size. However when it comes to the mid size trucks specifically, idk i kinda feel like the Tacoma looks better. But i havent driven either mid size truck, so for now all i can say is that the Tacoma LOOKS better than the Colorado. If i were in the market for a Colorado though, I would rather get the GMC Canyon for the leather interior and faux wood accents. Also heard the seats are more comfortable in the Canyon too.

I have a '15 Colorado and it's been damn good to me and never had a single issue with it at all. I tried test driving the new tacos and just didn't like it. It all comes down to personal preference. In my case I didn't have much choice because I had to get rid of my ailing ranger because the rear axle was getting ready to break. Stop knocking everyone that doesn't own a Toyota, that's just not cool.

I just need to say that in my state, I see a lot more taco's on used car lots then even the older Colorado/Canyons are hard to find for sale, but I see them on the road as much as the taco's. I owned a 2004 4dr crew cab Collie and even though it was much older then the 2013 taco I used for work out on dirt roads. The Colorado was better. the Tacoma was the trim below the trd offroad, poor ground clearance, the interior did not hold up the needs......my Colorado never ended up in the shop, but I did have to have the rear end carrier replaced cause it locked up and didn't unlock. the tacos had to go in for recall issues twice in the 3 years the company had them!my colli had the 3.5L inline 5 cylinder that had 234 hp/234 lbs-ft of torque and still got 17mpgs in town, those tacos had the 4banger and got 12-13mpgs in town. as per loading the trucks, well once again It goes to the Collie, I fit 1 dirt bike, one Honda touring bike from the 70's, ramps, miscellaneous other carparts, and two 5gl buckets full of chains when my buddy moved. The chevy handled a bit rougher then usual but it stopped and went like there was only one bike in it.the tacomas we loaded to the load rating and maybe a bit over with some equipment and then gear and three techs (in a extended cab) and that thing struggled to stay on the road and didn't like bumps at all.

@smartfan22
@smartfan22 8 жыл бұрын
personal experience with the trucks is where I pulled those numbers from, considering that the work truck (2013 Taco) also had a tracker in it to know how the truck was being driven an where, company insurance purposes. And do you and your dad live within 1000' above sea level? Cause I was at over 4000'. which will also effect the performance, yet the trucks computers should have compensated for that, and yet the Colorado performed better.....

+george palacios The Tacoma is also more capable than the Raptor for off road despite what was said in the video. Its lighter more nimble and able to get onto more trails than a Raptor. The Tacoma also has 9.4 inches of ground clearance vs the Raptors 9.3 inches. The Tacoma also has a 32 degree approach angle vs the Raptors 30 degree approach angle. And the off road model has no efficiency air dam valence that they said would be ripped off the minute both trucks off road. Even with the air dam the Tacoma has a 29 degree approach angle which is 1 degree shy of a Ford Raptors bumper in the non off road Tacoma model.

+Ryan Hero Not really the Raptor is one hell of an off road truck. The fox shocks of the raptor allow the truck to fly through rough terrain at high speeds. the tacoma is a good off road truck but i would take the Raptor over the tacoma any day. The raptor is one serious off-road truck with amazing suspension, more hp and better looks.
@ryanhero2231
@ryanhero2231 8 жыл бұрын
+george palacios Raptor is too big and too heavy to be compared to a Tacoma and its capability for off road. The Raptor has an advantage at higher speeds but that is it. The Tacoma is light and has better clearances. And back when the Raptor was around in 2014-2015 the Tacoma Pro came with a Supercharger option and had the same acceleration times as a Raptor. The Raptor is just too heavy to ever be fast. The AWD Cyclone made 25 years ago will still beat the acceleration of the Raptor, even the new one. Its just too big on trails. The new Tacoma is underpowered but it is still lighter in the bush which is a 1300LB advantage.

Kelley Blue Book, ""The Tacoma's steering easily became misaligned in both of our test units following only a few minutes of high-speed off-roading." So what does this mean, exactly? Was it when you were driving around in circles, drifting, and hitting bumps or when you were driving generally in the rough terrain? I'd like to know more on this. If steering parts are bending due to basic off-road abuse, then that is a problem.

They cannot even give away the Colorado. The Tacoma sells 2.4 to every 1 Colorado and that gap is going to widen as production catches up to the demand. Dealers cannot keep the TRDs in stock. The insane resale value and dependability of the Toyota Tacoma is legendary and the Colorado is being left in the dust....Literally. gmauthority.com/blog/2015/08/toyota-tacoma-outsells-chevy-colorado-on-a-two-to-one-basis-in-july-2015/

+ravenmadx This is wrong, and yes I say that even as you provide a link. www.goodcarbadcar.net. Include the GMC Canyon numbers in there (same platform, same engines, same tranny, same capabilities, more features) and the ratio is reduced greatly, to 1.5:1. In the first year on sale after 3 years out of the mid-size segment, GM sold 3X as many units as they did the outgoing 2012 twins. They sold twice as many units as Nissan's Frontier in 2015, and are easily the second-best seller in the market, selling about 125k to Toyota's 190k. 65k units may sound like a lot to you, but to GM it really isn't considering they sell ~1.1 million truck units per year across all brands and segments. As far as resale goes, the story isn't quit that clear cut there, either. Look up resale on a 2012 V8 Colorado, and it's hovering between $25-30k, depending on miles. Yes, for the old Colorado that supposedly nobody loved. Even the 3.7L 5-cylinder models sell high. Is it as high as Tacoma? No, but it's not nearly as low as Taco fans would have people believe, partly because pickups in general, regardless of make, hold their value very well. So, generally speaking, GM moves a lot of metal that holds its value only a bit worse than Toyota, who does far smaller truck volumes overall.
@ravenmadx
@ravenmadx 8 жыл бұрын
+SurelyYewJest Here is the data from the very same site you gave me.... Colorado total US Sales: Tacoma total US sales: 2012 - 36,840 2012 - 141,365 2013 - 3412 2013 - 159,485 2014 - 8003 2014 - 155,041 2015 - 84,430 (Colorado Release) 2015 - 179,562 2016 - 22,620 2016 - 44,576 (Tacoma Release) So, even when compared to the Old outgoing model of Tacoma the Colorado got whooped more that 2:1. The Colorado was released 1 year earlier. The Tacoma's debut still outsold 2:1 to the Colorado and the Colorado losing much of its initial "hype" and fizzling out while the Tacoma is picking up steam. Using the GMC "double up" makes the sales numbers look even more pathetic for GM. It takes 2 different Companies under one banner (GM) to compete (which it doesn't) to the Tacoma. And GM still cannot Usurp the King of the Mid-sized truck.
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest 8 жыл бұрын

+SurelyYewJest The Canyon is the same trash truck in a chromier package. My argument is sound and the fact that you have to try to double up when I was talking specifically about the Colorado. Who cares about the Canyon it is an irrelevant truck hence no reviews about the Canyon because it is duplicity. GM has to provide large "cash bonuses" just to try to move metal. Tacoma never has had this problem. Ever.
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest 8 жыл бұрын
ravenmadx Your argument is crap. It's not doubling up because the GMC is effectively the same truck with more options. It's not some magically different truck that competes with the Colorado.

The Colorado is mass built but well thought of. There is stuff that Chevy needs to work on but we can all admit that Chevy and gmc are doing a good job on trucks this past year.
