I own the 2019 Hyundai Elantra Sport DCT... and I LOVE it! Better price against the Honda, far better warranty, and I think it's quality outshines the Civics. Plus... it looks way better.

I too have '19 Elantra Sport, there's a few things I wish it did different(LSD, paddles on column instead of Steering wheel, and I prefer auto-stick to pull back to shift up instead of pressing up, just my preference). It also needs more torque, 195ft/lb's isn't enough, like to see it 201hp/220tq.

Honda fanboys coming out full-force. Fact is, great engineering is great engineering regardless of badge preference, especially when you factor in Hyundai/Kia's recent reliability and value proposition. Kudos to Kia/Hyundai for making great cars at this price point. Once upon a time, Honda used to be THAT company who focused on engineering, reliability, and value and to show for it, I have an AP2 S2000 to remind myself of the past.

I have a 2017 Kia forte 5 SX with a 7 speed dual clutch automatic. I looked for a manual in 3 different states "New". Wasn't going to special order a Kia. It has the same power train and suspension as this Elantra Sport with the exception of a torsion bar instead of independent rear suspension in the rear end. Which I honestly can't tell a difference as of yet. I haven't had it on a track yet but on the street it handles great. My only complaint is the electric steering which I'm sure is the same on the Elantra. The steering feels like nothing. I personally think the civic has the Elantra beat here all day long. But when it comes to power? I've raced 3 different stock 2017 Civic SI's with my 2017 Kia forte 5 SX. I've beat 2 out of the 3. One was a coupe the other a sedan. The one that beat me was a coupe and it was a close race but he got me 3 times in row. They are very close in power. I honestly am personally don't consider myself a "great" driver. Maybe the 1st 2 guys I raced were horrible drivers? I am willing to consider that. But they are close in power for sure. I personally like the looks of the a the Elantra better. Just my preference. But it sure could use the sporty accents that the Civic has. So far I love my KIA and have been really surprised in the quality. And keep in mind I have owned a couple Civic SI's in the past. So far my Forte 5 SX has been just as fun to drive and own as they were. It also has more options when it comes to luxury than Civic SI.

We spent $43,000 for a a brand new loaded 2014 Kia Sorrento. 1 month and 2000 km over the Powertrain warranty expired the engine blew up. Kia sold us a used engine at $8000 installed. 1 month later, the rear differential and driveshaft cratered. Kia gave us 4800 dollars for the car as a down payment on a used Ford. The verdict? A $50,000 investment that lost $46,000 in value in just 61 months. And yes, we maintained it. The car would have needed wheel bearings and a host of other repairs. Just a poorly built vehicle that shows well when new but deteriorates quickly.

Both great cars in their own ways. I would personally take the Elantra Sport bc of the better styling, exhaust note, and comfort. The Honda has had more experience with making sporty cars, but the Elantra Sport is very good for a drivers and commuter car. But, I still wish the SI had Vtec instead of a turbo. 10 years ago, I would have gone with a Honda over anything else. But today, I would choose a Hyundai or a Kia. I feel that Honda has been slipping since 2014 came around. Honda is still great, but not as good as they used to be. Hyundai is improving each generation with build quality and reliability. Initial quality and reliability is almost on par with Honda now. And, to all of you who think the Civic is the best or hate Hyundai, take the Elantra Sport for a drive and see for yourself. Not saying that the Elantra nor Civic is the best, but the Elantra has improved vastly. This isn’t Hyundai of the 80s anymore, so resale value and quality are so much better than ever before with Hyundai. It is all about preference. I would choose the Hyundai.

The Elantra Sport looks and feels like a little Audi (thanks Biermann!) and the Honda looks like a teenager’s car. That’s why I bought the Hyundai over the Honda-and I was raised on Hondas and considered myself loyal. The Hyundai’s interior and exterior are so much more grown up and it’s a blast to drive. I would never, ever own a cloth interior after age 25. The manual is almost as good as my AP1 S2000.

They're the same, both reliable, "sporty" and economical considering their intentions. Personally I like the Elantra, clean design and progression in performance. No "N" version though, but I would imagine if they had one they would compare it to the Type-R and Hyundai would be in the same position. That said K car hater's have to acknowledge how far they have come to be even compared in all these categories and to do so well. Also I believe that many are going off of pervasive misinformation, and being willfully ignorant. Kia and Hyundai rank among the top in reliability. I've had Honda's and they were great, currently I have a Hyundai Elantra GT with almost 90k miles. No issues, that's all you can really ask for in a commuter car that cost less than $20k at the time. They're both the same, a fraction of a second and a foot or two here or there, can be corrected with an error margin. but Honda dropped the ball in style and design.

Wow, the Hyundai hate is strong as ever in the comments section I see. Everyone that is saying the Si wins this comparison "hands down", have you even been in an Elantra Sport? I've got a news flash for you. As far as build quality and reliability, Honda is NOT the Honda of old. These new generation Civics have issues. I personally know three people that own a 2016+ Civic (Sport, not Si). Two of them have had multiple electrical issues, one of whom was so frustrated by the issues they ended up trading in their Civic 6 months after purchasing it brand new for a different brand all together. I think this comparison is more than fair considering reviewers only spend a very short period of time in vehicles. For me personally, If I don't have to live with a car day in, day out, I could care less about a vehicles exterior styling, its infotainment, its exhaust note, etc. What I would care about is the drive itself, and I don't think anyone here is arguing that the Si is the more "fun to drive" of the two. Hyundai hasn't been building sport compact cars forever like Honda has. What people fail to understand is that the Elantra Sport is still a BLAST to drive. It doesn't do it better than the Si, but it isn't far behind either. Now, as a consumer, the end user, you are the one living with a car day in day out. You walk outside every morning and you have to look at the car in your Garage/Driveway. You have to deal with the infotainment systems daily. You have to sit in those seats daily. For most, your commute consists of heavy traffic, straight roads and traffic lights. Looks are Subjective, but how many can honestly tell me that the Civic Si is a better looking car than the Elantra Sport? Personally I think Hyundai absolutely knocked it out of the park in the looks department. Moving inside, personally I prefer Leather to cloth, I like having a heated steering wheel in the winter time, and Hyundai's infotainment is considered to be one of the best in the business right now. The Elantra Sport actually beat the Si on the Autocross on "TheStraightPipes" comparision these two vehicles, although both Yuri and Jakub both agreed the Si felt sportier and more fun to drive. They said they both felt more consistent in the Elantra Sport. So despite the Si feeling faster and sportier, when it comes to actual performance numbers, these vehicles are very close. And that combine with the massive MSRP difference, the better looks, the better interior, the better infotainment system, the better warranty, and I'll throw this in here...that exhaust note. I think you are cheating yourself by not SERIOUSLY considering the Elantra Sport when looking at the Civic Si. I'm not telling everyone how to spend their money, I'm just saying to be smart about these types of decisions. If I can get equal performance, better styling, better interior, better infotainment, for much less money, I know where my money is going.

Konrad C again, the Si definitely feels faster and sportier, there is no question. It's amazing that they actually make similar power because the Si feels like it's got 50 extra hp due to its power delivery. The Elantra feels N/A by comparison. Still a great car though.

You are right, there are some very "small" things absent from reviews that can make or break a car Some of my experience living the Si (and having test driven the ES multiple times before making my choice). Build quality wise, I think both are excellent, Ive owned a korean car in the past, and have no doubts that they can make a solid car. as for electrical issues on the civic, The only major one is for some reason my audio system locks up if I stall the car. Honestly considering how rare that happens I don't really consider it too much of an issue. looks aside, I can't really comment on this, I bought the coupe (which isn't an option on the Hyundai), and I honestly prefer the looks of the coupe more. The stance is lower, proportion's are MUCH better than the sedan, and it has 2 less fake vents, and a spoiler that helps correct the "bubble butt" You notice on the regular coupe. On a daily driver note. For heavy traffic, I honestly would take the civic, that vague clutch, makes is super forgiving and incing in traffic is significantly less tiring than almost any other manual car i've driven. I don't like it when i'm driving hard, but man is it a saver when stuck on the highway. For me I personally prefer cloth, I tend to sweat in leather seats, with the lack of ventilation. As for the autocross comparison, It's well understood in that video that they are only equal because the OE tires on the civic are just not as good in absolute grip. "Consistency" and confidence go a long way when the grip limit is higher. Had they had the same rubber (which honestly people would switch out within 3 years anyways knowing how fast eaglesports wear out), The Si definitely has more of an advantage from a car setup perspective. as for price, I don't really see a too big difference. The massive price gap is lessened once you add in the premium package to get dual zone auto and nav back in (which the canadian Si has as standard). And Having owned a 2013 optima previously, All the money saved when I bought car (I got a $6500 Cash discount) was countered by the lower resale value. This isn't me saying that korean cars are pieces of crap down the road (they are not). Its just a fact that when it comes to sell, the Si will retain it's value simply because it's an Si, and there are people buying that car specifically, whereas for better or for worse, there isn't on the ES. as for my personal reasons for choosing the Si. It was again one of those "small things" overlooked by most. I MUCH prefer the seating position of the Si. the ES just doesn't get low enough, and at times it feels like i'm driving a crossover siting so up right. the Si retains that "feet in front" position. The gauge cluster is almost flush with the dash and very low, the stick is higher up closer to the arm rest (and shorter, which helps with lessen the throws), I get why Hyundai chose not to do this, the Si is definitely harder to get in and out of, but again as you said "You have to sit in those seats daily", I would much rather take that connected feeling you get on the Si. TLDR, they are BOTH GREAT CARS, and should both be considered greatly to any buyer, but I can't simply agree that the ES is a better buy for the vast majority of people either. I can narrow it down to these 2, and then just ask them to take a test drive and see which they prefer.

So the Hyundai ends up being better because it costs less and doesn't lose more value. Do some research before you comment.

Firstly, Elantra Sport beat Civic Si in other vid where they raced each other. So i'm not sure about the speed difference mentioned in this vid. Also You should think about the price difference. In this segment, 4k difference is a lot. It's like 1/5~1/6 difference. Those who talk about resale value does make sense, but at that time you'll be earning more money and that depreciation difference might not matter as much as 4k difference at a younger stage. Personally I think Hyundai's resale value may go up considering the fact that they have been working very hard on quality for recent few years. Plus, you could just keep Elantra since it has 10 year warranty and sufficient reliability.
@skifree0
@skifree0 7 жыл бұрын
Your logic to justify the resale value doesn't make much sense at all. Regardless of when you "pay" that upfront in the cost, or in resale value afterwards, IT ALWAYS factors into cost of ownership the same way. a car is a depreciating asset, but it is STILL an asset. if it's worth 4k less at the end then that is 4k less money when you purchase the next car. banking on "hopefully in the future you will make more money" is hardly an excuse. as for the race where they raced eachother, equal powered cars neck and neck, but with OE tires. The ES tires are more grippy than the civic's, had they been on the same rubber, The civic would've pulled away.

Honestly, these two brands of cars differ in the city and town you live in. So there really is no better car overall. Here in Nevada, with the traffic not terrible and there being a lot of open roads, the si is the biggest and baddest here and the Hyundai dealerships can't sell their Elantra sports and trade them for more Sonatas from LA and San Diego where the Elantra does shine and do better than the si.

The past two weekends I went car shopping for new cars with my son. The most important criteria was good power and he want nothing bigger than a Civic class. He was trading in a 2010 Kia Forte EX which I must say was pretty snappy with the bigger engine, around 155hp. Corolla, gutless but one of the better interiors. New Kia Forte nice but again not enough power. Civic, fast but like someone said here teen boyish looks, loud, and interior was nice. Mazda 3 touring 184hp, fast enough, fit and finish was top notch, class ride. That was last weekend. Prior to leaving yesterday i stumble on the Elantra sport. Saw the 201hp Turbo spec. For some reason Hyundai was not on his radar. I showed him the specs and off we went to test it out. It had the 7 speed auto which performed flawless and from the passenger seat the take off and pull felt better than the SI. Interior was much nicer than the Honda and this included Sunroof, Auto dimming mirror, Infinity speakers, Leather.. We both were blown away. The dealer was motivated to clear the 2018's out so here was the deal. 25k+ sticker. With incentives the price came down to $20,500!!! They offered him $1,000 for his Kia with 125k miles. My son said that was lite for the trade and said we leave for an hour or so to think it over. the mgr up it to $1,800 plus he got the new college graduate $400 rebate on top of that. We still walked away. Went and look at some other cars briefly. He said it was between the Mazda 3 and the Hyundai. Hyundai hands down...... We went back and he now own's a new Hyundai.

I'll never understand what the Honda Engineers were thinking when they came up with the styling for the Si. Especially the huge plastic fake air vents. Why can't Honda take a lesson from Audi and BMW in exterior design. Those cars are timeless in their appearance. It's the same with the Accord which looked great before and looks worse in the over styled exterior of the 18.

I drove Civic si coupe few days ago, car felt great! Very planted, responsive and quick on it's feet. Id say new Civic Si in underrated as far as power/trq goes as it certainly felt more like 220-225hp according to butt dyno 😁 That said, Elantra is much better looking in my opinion, and offers hatchback option in GT sport trim/w 6sp manual with I'm most interested in.

I wouldn’t even compare the Elantra sport to the si. Id compare it to the civic sport hatch. They’re around the same price and have about the same power to weight ratio. Because the si is lighter. Has adaptive suspension and an LSD. it’s not really fair to the Hyundai I also don’t like the rear of the si but It’s much better than the overall potato shape of the Elantra.

The two perform almost identically. 0-60 is 6.3 in the Civic and 6.6 in the Hyundai. Handling is .97g's for the Honda and .91g's for the Hyundai. Funny thing is when you put similar all season tires on the Civic it drops to 6.7 0-60 and .89 g's on the skidpad as per Car and Driver. The Hyundai comes standard with all season tires. Switch to summer only tires similar to the Civic and the Hyundai will likely equal or best the numbers the Civic puts down. Why wouldn't you compare two cars so equally matched? Is it because the Hyundai offers so much more for much less money? Sorry but the performance is there to match the civic whether you believe it or not.

If I may. I own a 2012 Elantra which is nothing really special, but is the most reliable car that I have ever owned and I've owned every kind of make that ever has been. I believe that the Korean market has become the new benchmark and I'll explain why. Toyota, Datsun or say Nissan and Mazda who've I owned and every American make that there is to own has not measured up to the standards of what Hyundai has demonstrated to the highest standards expected to backing up their vehicles under warranty coverage or moral for that matter. There company as a whole is nothing that stands out so to speak, but any company that tries to put their best foot forward is the best to choose from. Look at Toyota, they were not so hot in their beginning years and yet they have never offered a 100,000 mile warranty on any of their vehicles or any other company for that matter. Where else can you get a coverage on any other vehicle other than Hyundai? I'm right at 187,000 miles on my 2012 Elantra and only have had an air bag spring sensor problem which costed less than $300.00 and that's it. I have seen on line of a record of 405,000 miles and even over 650,000 miles on this car design with very few problems. The Elantra to me is just breaking ground with real performance and I'm willing to hold out for something better, such as a history of reliability and an increase in horsepower and torque and a all wheel drive system that surpasses Ford's Focus RS design. The Hyundai Elantra is just beginning to break ground and move forward to something a whole lot more for your hard earned dollar. This is a company that not only aims to provide more than one option for performance of a standard transmission but a duel clutch automatic transmission as well since I'm a below the knee amputee and yes I know how to drive a standard as well, but it's nice to have the option.

Just took my black interior/exterior 2018 Elantra sport from San Francisco HWY 1 to Fort Bragg. Its an awesome road. The car preformed excellent. Raced a 2017 Maserati Granturismo. He didn't stand a chance. Mine is turbo charged. His was not. When a Honda Civic SI saw me coming it would simply pull over and a wave a white handkerchief. The Toyota Camry drivers would stare in a state of stunned awe of its black beauty whizzing past them. So many victories in one 100 mile drive its hard to share them all.

Wrong! The ES keeps right up with the Si in every aspect. Car and Driver actually tested an Si with all season tires and it performed worse than the Hyundai does on it's standard all season tires. The Honda ONLY has an advantage when it has summer only tires. The Hyundai also performs this close to the Si on REGULAR GAS. Last I checked it is 60 cents more per gallon for super unleaded. OUCH! And my mileage has been about 33 mpg mixed around town. 36-37 mpg should easily be achievable on a highway trip. The EPA is way low on these cars. Car and Driver actually admitted that as well. There goes another supposed big advantage to the Civic. Sorry you Civic fans can't handle the facts but there they are....

people are just relying on company's name and are not seen the big picture. Civic SI has been out for a while in contrast with the Elantra, which just came out this year. Korean manufactures, in general, are becoming the new reliable products for consumers, they are developing better products period. Korea is leading in reliability and product quality compare to Japan. I love both cars but I have to admit that Honda is not like it was before. People are just afraid to accept changes and they rely only on brand's name, not seen the fact that their products are not the same anymore. just in case.
