2018 Mercedes-Benz G550 - Old German Relic Is Alive & Well

Few production vehicles are as iconic as the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. Despite its age, Mercedes continues to attract celebrities and very wealthy clients into its showrooms. While an all-new G-Class is coming at the end of this year, the current model still has the looks, prestige, off capability, and refinement to go toe to toe with the best luxury SUV's money can buy. Just be sure you don't actually need to carry too many people in the back seat or need something that actually gets over 20 MPG on the highway.

To be honest, this car is a car that you would BUY for fun and for joy. Not for daily duty. Yes to prove my point, the materials aren't as lovely as other MB products, some old school features like no push button start on this particular model, no auto up windows, only down, no smart key access, and no felt lined glove box. But overall, if I had the money, I would DEFINITELY buy this car no matter what because of how much fun it is to drive

There’s something about the old school flare that reassures you that this truck is capable, solid and dependable. Who needs smart entry anyway?? It doesn’t always respond to the key fob even when you try to start it up. I’d prefer it if a lot of manufacturers would retain at least one model throughout their lineup kept this traditional approach.

Driving one is an experience. Everything about it contradicts itself. Its huge, but its small. Its fast, but it's aerodynamically challenged. Its old, but its new. You would think "I wouldnt drive that douchey car", but after driving one, you feel unstoppable. It breaks expectations. But man they really raised the price tag since 2005, so its even further out of my reach. I'll just restore the plasticy interior G500 we collecting dust at my parents place.

The windows are also automatic to close. Just close it and hold the button in the "close" position for 10 seconds then open. It just needs resetting.

This is definitely a love it or hate it kind of vehicle, and I'm not a fan. If I were in the market for that kind of SUV, I'd choose a Cayenne over the G-Wagon without thinking twice. I'm not an SUV person anyway and almost always prefer BMW to Mercedes, but I do love a Porsche too. I would love to have a Cayman one day.

Redline Reviews the ZR1 is essentially just a Z06 with a larger supercharger and a spoiler in my eyes with insane dealer markups. Z06 is a better bargain in my opinion.

6* front crash rating. When they tested it, it went straight through the test wall with only a small scratch.

The body itself is strong, but like other SUV’s the unsafe thing about it is the rollover risk. It’s not aerodynamic at all and when I drove a G63, I could feel the terrible body roll.

Its not as good as it looks from personal short experience. Top heavy with corner lean, ride is so so, heavy and tight interior. not MB quality inside. Bad car to buy, but if i had the $ id probably own on. Weird like that.

It was engineered as a military vehicle in the seventies. So why did u expect luxury and street driveability? The G-Class is a durable vehicle and a capable offroader with strong engines (up to 630hp). It is also mostly handbuilt. So I would argue it has the MB quality just like MB trucks, tractors, cargo vans, busses and airplane engines have always had it. But u shouldn´t look at it as a car....

Sidon Ronaldinho I shouldn't look at this thing as a car? Yeah no it's got 4 wheels and goes forward, it's a car buddy. It can offroad sure, but I can do just as much in my Tacoma offroad when its properly set up. Also those horsepower ratings are deceptive with how heavy the stupid thing is. It's not really that quick, handles like trash, tons of body roll and terrible interior. The new 2019 Ram 1500 has a more luxurious and capable interior if its optioned out. I can go on and on, you want me to?

Sidon Ronaldinho there i will have to counter. Its not an off roader by any means. It has no purpose really. I drove the g wagon in the military as well. It was sub par on mud and on rough terrain. Always had to be towed out. And for the price a pop it better damn be luxury. And personally i was not impressed by the amg combo by any means. Have you ever driven a Durango hemi and the new v6? There isnt much difference in perf even though one has 2L and 2cyl more over the other, this is pretty much same.
