This is the German equivalent of the Hummer H1. It *could* be used as an offroader, but nobody does since the manufacturer refuses to make a model in a cheaper utilitarian trim level.

Thats not true at all lol. Check out the before generations where people bought the diesel model and took them off-road. And they still build new military vehicles. And CHEAP, you won’t get with a hand built vehicle but you can get the used for reasonable prices.

Everyone saying the owners will never take it off road nor do they know if off road exist. Come to my country, we use g classes for real off roads. If I ever own one, it d live its life mostly off road. P.S. where I live, we have less paved roads, thats why most people here owns g-classes, LCs.

Would like to compare to Jeep Rubicon. 95% of G Wagon owners never go off road and pay for the name, image, and extra luxury. Hopefully jeep which has a tiny fraction of the luxury but high price has comparable off-road capability.

lol @ the people saying the G Class is only driven on Rodeo Drive. Here in Germany, a lot of park/forest rangers, hunters, country doctors or vets etc drive G Wagons. Our equivalents to the SWAT (MEK/SEK) and the FBI (BKA) have amored version of them in use.

Fritjof D this video is for an American audience, and in America that’s what most G wagon owners do. Besides, the vast majority of G wagons are sold outside of Germany, particularly in the United States. Most Germans couldn’t dream of buying the G class or the AMG version due to its exorbitant price. No one cares about who drives it in Germany.

TBC1987 Yes, MB is still only a luxury brand, though the Metris and Sprinter vans are both trying to change that. So, it may take a while for us Americans to accept the G wagon as also a utilitarian brand.

Love my Falken Wildpeaks. They are the new duratrac in terms of the hot new not-Ko2. all 3 of my wheeling buddies ended up independently chose the wildpeak in 33's for their tire and we all love them. Good tires.

@ Carfan: Well, if one Wrangler broke down and was in the shop, you'd have 2 others to use, so you'd never be completely stranded as you'd be if you owned only ONE Wrangler. It's always good to have "spare" Jeeps... As for the Mercedes G, I don't know how its reliability-rating compares to Jeep's so I wouldn't know if it's better, worse...or the same. For me though, only ONE Wrangler (Rubicon) would be in my budget...certainly not 3 of them, OR the Mercedes G in ANY trim level...so I'd take my chances (reliability-wise) with the Wrangler. I DO want more towing capacity though than Wranglers have, however, so perhaps the new Jeep Wrangler Gladiator would be a better choice (despite being longer and with those associated trade-offs when off-road). -- BR

Good to see the new G-wagen offroad in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - great place. The only drawback with the G-wagen is underclearance - it needs more but there's no way to lift it or at least run larger tires.

Closed course or not, impressive capabilities. Good review .... why sandy course? Dubai is why. Prefer the out going model, crazy expensive, crazy purposeful & crazy rugged. New model may not be a cream puff however it’s softer for the road with tamed off road chops.

I’m glad they resigned it as this will no doubt be the last iteration. With electric trucks such as Rivian coming out, with 4 independent motors to each wheel, it will be able to control traction with far more precision and immediacy vs these old mechanical systems with differentials everywhere. Electric also means you don’t have to worry about snapping differentials when you engage them at the wrong moment or on hard surfaces. The old G wagon had extensive warnings about when and when not to hit the locking buttons. This new one is nice, which means it’s swan song will be graceful.

One JL, one diesel ZR2, one Raptor for the price of equipped G wagon. Had the same dilemma when shopping for EV - one nicely equipped Tesla S model (& keep my old Gen 1 Tacoma off-roader) or a new ZR2 and BoltEV for same price. I went with GM, don’t regret it at all !!!

the bad news it has an IFS, the good news is that the old one will depreciate in value. which means it would be the best time to get one and with nearly 40 years of production there will be no shortage of parts. the G class was meant to be a military truck. the new one is a civilian truck now so it won't handle a beating like the one before it. its now a full-fledged poser mobile.

Keep dreaming about that depreciation. Most of the current vehicles are pre-sold. The rest of this year and next year will be filling orders. The previous iteration will continue to be desired and the market will hold for quite sometime, especially considering there's been an appreciably decent hike in the base price and over all loaded pricing.

That course was extremely lame. They say this thing could finish the Rubicon trail?? Let's see that, AND the damage report (and bill) afterwards. That they don't show this thing on a real challenging course speaks volumes. Anyone could EASILY buy a brand new Jeep Rubicon (JL) then upgrade it extensively AND buy another new car and have plenty of money leftover for the cost of one of these G-Wagens. Everyone should just admit these are moderately capable toys for the rich. Nothing special to see here.
