2018 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen gets Unitronic Stage 1 Upgrade

I love my MK7 Golf Sportwagen. I've owned it since new and have only ever had one teeny-tiny complaint: It could use more power. The standard 170hp and 185 lb.-ft. of torque are "enough" but now that the basic warranty is up, I want more. For that, I returned to my trusty local VW shop and got a Unitronic Stage 1 update. The result: 242hp, 273 torques, and big smiles. All I have to do now is nurse the clutch... BTW, I've not yet crossed the 32,000km mark on the counter.
Update: After three weeks of driving the Golf with its new tune, we've noticed a remarkable improvement in fuel consumption. We are still "testing" the performance potential however we've so far calculated a 20+% reduction in fuel consumption. This may not apply to all but we are extremely happy with the purchase so far.

​@@patwill0007 Stock clutch, 49,000km. No clutch slip and stock clutch should be able to handle stage 1 without any issues if you don't destroy the clutch. I think you start to run into problems when you swap turbos (IS20 from the GTI or IS38 from the Golf R). Unfortunately, the 5MT in the mk7/7.5 golf is made of glass.

J'ai des roues 18po du VW Atlas sur la mienne. Je viens de changer les pneus pour du 235/45R18 all season all terrain. Ca me prend plus de jus maintenant! Pour 600$ ça vaut surement la peine!

This stage 1 upgrade was just a tune? No need to buy hardware upgrades to. Sounds tempting 😂 I just purchased a 2017 TSI S w/ DSG today. I didn't know this was a sleeper. Im a clueleblss 47yo who just sold an Abarth fiat last year. From tiny car to huge car. My gripe was, it's too tiny for sleeping during long trips lol, but it was fun. 😂

I have a 2020 vw Jetta I have never used 87 I’ve always used 91, my gas mileage is higher and feel like my transmission is smoother worh the higher octane gas

Hey! Nice review! Im really tempted to also get the unitronic stage1! Is the rest of the car completely stock? If so, happy like that? Let us know how it reacts in the winter!

Thanks! Yes, everything else about the car is 100% stock meaning that it's just as competent as ever in wintery conditions, but with more power. The next step will be more aggressive brake pads. They'll need to be changed this year so why not upgrade.

So far, we figure a roughly 20% improvement in fuel consumption on premium 91 octane gasoline. We are thoroughly impressed.
