Thanks much for all your videos. Personally, I would really appreciate reviews like this for a single person, maybe a couple. The weatherization/insulation heads up is also very welcome. What keeps the cold out also keeps the cool in for summertime. Bravo.

Love this review, this is exactly the RV I would need and the hydronic heating system that runs off of the main diesel tank sips diesel fuel and can run all day in the blistering cold weather yet you would feel like you never left the comfort of your home wipes away all the other minor inconveniences. This camper is a dream come true for many avid winter sports enthusiasts and I can see why this is selling lot hot cakes out west.

Hey Neil - thanks for another good review, but we should also note that this is WGO's first attempt to bring a mass-produced 4x4 bug-out vehicle to the masses. Before the release of this van, your only options were Sports Mobile, Outside Van, or a handful of competent (but expensive and long lead time) upfitters. While there are plenty of things Winnebago could have done better (bench seat shoulder belts, underhood generator, etc.), they did check off a lot of boxes (4 season capability, great gear storage, and true 4x4 performance). One of the main points missed was the advantages of the high ground clearance and short wheelbase that allows users to get to places that other vans just can't get to. Take a look at the FaceBook Revel group, and you'lI be amazed where people are taking these things (you won't see any KOA's or Good Sam). This van is in a completely different league than the Winnebago ERA 4x4 or Agile 4x4 (only 3 season capable and lowered skirting that makes them unusable off road). So yes, this van is not for everyone. But for a lot of people, it is exactly the van that a lot of us have been waiting decades for. I'm adding one to my rental fleet in July, but hoping to test it out a bit myself;). With a street price of $110-120k, it's a van that will give pleasure to quite a few. Thanks again for the review, and hope we can colaborate in the future.

hey there CamperVanGuy - great points you make all around. I concede that it is the first mass market 4x4 that is truly useful for off roading. I guess my main beef with Winnebago is the price point and the fact that it only comes with a 1 year warranty. I just don't get it. You can't charge that much and bill the van as a 4x4 encouraging folks to use it off road and then only offer a 1 year warranty. I also can't give Winnebago a pass on the design - sorry. They are a multinational corporation with a product design team that is larger than the whole of many smaller rv manufacturers. I get that they needed to get rid of the propane tank (can't have that and get ground clearance) but then do your design work. put in lithium batteries and an underhood generator to power the compressor refrigerator and induction cooktop. It just isn't acceptable in my book. When you watch their product people walk you through the van it is obvious that they know that they've made some unacceptable compromises. Like I say in the video I applaud Winnebago for taking the chance and moving the industry forward but some of these things just aren't right for customers nor for the industry as a whole. Just my 2 cents. As always I appreciate your feedback and watching my video!
@CamperVanGuy6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. But with the success of the Revel launch, large manufacturers will jump in to gain market share and keep other builders honest. Consumers will drive the innovation. From a technical point, I've been told that the underhood generator on the MBZ diesel does not work well - obviously some engineering design philosophy differences between EHG and WGO. And with lithium, freezing weather can be problematic. I'm just happy to see this segment grow, and through critical review, improve. Like you, I'm not giving ANY of the manufacturers a free pass to make bad products. Thanks for holding their feet to the fire.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
it's interesting to watch Winnebago transform as they dominate the class b market. they went form virtually no market share in 2012 to the market leader today. along they way they are experiencing growing pains and candidly one of them is their transformation into becoming a product leader. it's a different ball game being the scrappy underdog and eating up market share with low priced options to then becoming the dominate dog and having to defend it. I see some of their product offerings like the Revel as indicative of this uncomfortable transformation. they want to continue to think and act like the low cost leader but then innovate and price their products as market leaders. The two don't mix and the Revel seems to me to be the child of these machinations. As I said in another comment - bring up the price and fix some of the design problems. that's what a true market leader would do but that would also require them to change other things about their organization like their warranty and support. It's a big deal - we'll see how they do. EHG is better positioned to take their mantel and if WGO isn't careful they will find themselves playing second fiddle to them. Just what my business strategy radar is telling me. Love this stuff and love having a conversation with you about it!

Great thread, really enjoying this topic!! I think we can all agree we’d like to see more off road campervan choices. I recently saw this article and in my opinion this is everything the Revel should and could be at a reasonable price point. I think many manufacturers are keeping a close eye on the success (or failure) of the Revel. This van at $80K seems like a great price point as a base. newatlas.com/westfalia-amundsen-offroad-camper-van/53845/

Ben, Okay honestly I mean look at the interior of that Amundsen 540D Offroad. It is lightyears better than the Revel. It looks premium but rugged. It is perfect. Oh and it has a proper bathroom! FTW!
@abelisar16 жыл бұрын
Love the review and I too have mixed feelings about the Revel. I like the 4x4 capability, the garage/bedroom/cargo functionality, the fact that the cabinets are aluminum framed for off road ruggedness, and the cassette toilet for more dumping options. I don't like the interior finish, in my mind it looks a bit cheap for the price; no lithium batteries, the macerator pump to drain the sink, cannot run the AC on house batteries, no voltstart or equivalent battery management system, and cheap jump seats. If they upgrade those items, I would definitely purchase one as I prefer to go "off the beaten path" and I'm getting too old to be traveling in my Jeep Wrangler and home made trailer with roof top tent.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
completely agree. charge me more and put in lithium batteries, jump seat like the Aktiv, underhood generator and a nice fit and finish and you've got an all around winner. unacceptable having a 1 year warranty on a rig like this, priced like this.
@5stardave6 жыл бұрын
It has a cassette toilet and is a propane free rig. Diesel, water and food are all you need to worry about. I like the welded aluminum cabinet frames, 3 group 31 AGM batteries and the 2000 Watt pure sine wave inverter. Most of Winnebago's class B and C offerings only have 1000 watt inverters.
@benvernick6 жыл бұрын
5stardave too bad they didn’t put the new Pure 3 system that they just launched on the new Travato. Now that is a true boondocking machine. No underhood generator is a big flaw for the Revel.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Hi five star Dave. My feeling is that For $142,000 you should get more than a one year warranty and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice a premium fit and finish. That’s just my humble opinion.It is a good fit if you’re looking for and will truly use a 4 x 4 RV in the winter but that’s not most buyers.Also for the price, you should be getting lithium batteries and multiplex wiring. They are charging a premium for this van and buyers deserve to get premium components
@5stardave6 жыл бұрын
It's not really marketed for RVers, it seems to be made for people who like to move each day. It is the minimalist approach, only what's needed and nothing more. I just wish they had the over driver storage of the ERA.
@benvernick6 жыл бұрын
5stardave just seems like a lot of money for a minimalist van. I think a better option would be to buy a 4x4 Sprinter and take it to a company like Outside Van. You’d save a ton of money and could basically pick and choose what features you want. Go as minimal as possible without all that cost. That’s just my opinion.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
I guess I don't get it then. if you're going to be out and about all the time, then get a much more capable 4x4 SUV and a tent or pop top. You'll get it for tens of thousands of dollars less and have a much more capable 4x4 that gets you into many more places. I guess I'm not the target market because they seem to be selling a ton of these.
@DavidHuffTexas6 жыл бұрын
My understanding of the double-pane acrylic windows is that they're good for their insulative properties, but that they scratch easily. So avoid rubbing against too many tree branches, stay away from car washes that use brushes, etc... I imagine some scratches could be polished out, but don't know how laborious that would be.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
if that's true what a silly thing to put into an off road vehicle. tree limbs etc. are the norm for off roading. thanks for pointing that out, David.
@peterkim19996 жыл бұрын
Adding a clear film that's normally applied to the front end of the vehicle would solve this potential issue(s) of scratching in my opinion.

We're researching the Class B options and the Revel is at the top of our list. I absolutely love the layout and features. My only concern is the cassette toilet. I've heard they're nasty to empty. Besides that the Revel checks most of the boxes on our feature wish list. We're probably going to buy about a year from now so perhaps the 2021 model will have a compost toilet option.
@minimutt14085 жыл бұрын
Custom van makers have been using the loft bedroom for a while. You can purchase them to put into your own van. Looks like Winnebago's innovation is to copy the custom market. You could probably get this layout on the custom market for the same or cheaper. What I think looks cool is when they put windows in the back and have the table and two benches under the bed rather than storage - much more inviting and you can get a separate closet in front where they have the bench seat.

Hi Neil - great review as always and thanks for your honesty. I won’t sugarcoat my feelings about this van, I hate it! I will admit on the outside it looks great. The interior is just awful. There isn’t one thing I like about it. It’s uncomfortable, has no storage and looks cheap. The only reason I could see getting this Van is if I would be in sub zero temperatures for extended periods of time and since I don’t plan on taking a trip to the Arctic anytime soon I’ll pass. It baffles me, if you look at the new Travato Lithium it has heated batteries and covers all water lines basically making it a 3 season van with occasional 4 season use. And the 59KL is a beautiful van! Isn’t the point of a campervan to be mobile? Go away from the freezing cold!!! Why anyone would buy this over the Travato or even the Agile 4x4 is beyond me. But if they have a waiting list of 60 people, maybe I’m missing something. But I doubt it.... PS if you google Westfalia 4x4 you’ll see in Europe they have a identical layout in a 4x4 Fiat Ducato that has a stunningly beautiful interior. Same concept, beautiful design and executed perfectly. I hope they bring a 4x4 promaster to the USA.

Ben, I couldn’t agree more with everything that you said. I don’t understand the revel either I’m trying to be understanding and trying not to sound like I’m bashing on it but Winnebago is charging a premium for this van and at the same time they giving you only a one-year warranty and less than premium components like standard lead acid batteries. I don’t get it.
@benvernick6 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility I didn’t even know about the 1 year warranty until you mentioned it. That just makes it worse!!! Without a generator of any kind it’s not even a good boondocker. Not enough solar and AGM batteries in this age of Lithium? Head scratcher is right. This van feels rushed. They should have waited till they finalized the Pure 3 Power System. Even if your ok with the less than stellar interior you wont be able to stay out very long in this van. I don’t think your bashing the van, your being honest. A lot of your viewers probably won’t agree with your opinion of it and that’s a tough place to be in. I for one appreciate your honesty.

Ultramobility I don’t think you need to worry, you did a great job of walking this line. I could tell you were biting you tongue when looking at the Frankenstein bathroom/closet!!! . You presented it in a very fair manner and did in fact recommend it to a certain group of buyers. People will hear what they want to hear. Majority of buyers have already made up their mind about he Revel. Sadly I think in a year from now, Roadtrek will come out with their own version of an off-road van that will make people regret their decision.

my intent of this RV is for it to be sort of a traveling locker room when skiing...I'm up at Lake Tahoe where they have about 8-10 ski areas within a 40 minute drive so I'm less likely to do much sleeping (maybe naps) and limited shower use, but it would come in handy to catch a football game or just change clothes with the various temperature changes or if hanging around for dinner or a casino visit..although I'm not too fond of that second row of seats, I'd rather have the dining space and an area to maybe do some equipment work of boot drying, etc....as far as the warmer season, anything would do as we get very mild summer nights

@TheAirForceGuy5 жыл бұрын
Neil, the One year warranty is just on the Winnebago part of the Revel. You still have the warranty on each appliance, which is usually 2 or 3 years. Then you have the warranty on the Mercedes Chassis & Drive Tran, which is the most important part. You mentioned the RoadTrek 6 year warranty, see what happened to that company. I tried to explain that to one of my Customers when they bought a RoadTrek 6 months before they went belly up. A Warranty is only as good as the Company. Winnebago builds a nice product and actually builds most of the parts themselves. Allowing them more over-site as to the quality of the end product. Keep up the good work!

With bed walls extended out, how wide is this van? There is some narrow "roads" in the boondocks. Also, does this van have the diesel engine where you can't buy fuel (diesel or B5) for it in Minnesota or Illinois?
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
the side extensions stay within the max width of the van with the mirrors extended (or retracted) the real problem with any tall sprinter being used as an off road 4x4 is its height. at 9 feet plus inches it is very tall and not ideal for going through wooded areas. it is diesel and subject to the restrictions of pure diesel (less than 5% bio) that Mercedes recommends.

I would be very careful to take $140k motor home off road. I have Sprinter converted van and I drove it to places were only 4x4 can get. The most important is clearance and angle of ascent and descend when driving over bumps on a forest roads. I never got stuck. I think traction mats and chains will perfectly substitute for four wheel drive. My biggest scare is that the van may tip over when driving on bad dirt roads. I never had to use mats or chains yet, but I always carry them. The 144 in, short version of Sprinter has about 8 in of clearance. The 4x4 version raise the clearance by another two inches. This will put the center of gravity even higher. I am perfectly satisfied with my rear drive Sprinter. In addition, I saved at least 10k. In my opinion, invest in heavy duty suspension and rear view camera. Much cheaper.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
it's a great point you make. This is an expensive vehicle and taking it off road is for wealthy adventure types. The height also has me concerned especially with the weight up there from solar panels and the optional air conditioner. Still, I'm sure the true adventure types like yourself will be perfectly able to remain safe.
@scowler926 жыл бұрын
I wonder how long it'll be until we see this setup in larger motorhomes. It's much more practical. The lifting bed is nothing new, but having the bedroom serve as a bike garage is. They could get more use out of that space by placing cushions on the rear doors and a projector setup in front, maybe a shelf for a computer tower.

@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Morgan. that 1 year warranty has got to go. got to go for all Winnebago camper vans but especially so for the revel. I will not stop pointing it out until they change it! I'm not sure about RV shows... I'll probably be lynched by the manufacturers if I go lol! I'm not sponsored by any of them and have no loyalty to any of them. I simply give my most honest review in an effort to help people. It's one of the problems I see in the industry is that there is no source for people to get an unbiased opinion. Everyone like We're the Russos, the Fitrv, Mike and Wendy Wendland and others are sponsored by the big RV manufacturers and this tilts their reviews. I'm not knocking them. I love them but for potential buyers I'm trying to fill a much needed niche. Even if I were sponsored (I have spoken to some manufacturers) it would be predicated on my ability to remain unbiased even with the sponsors products - that's probably the reason why I'll never get sponsored LOL.

This is the ideal configuration for a couple that likes to ride recumbent trikes that are the folding/collapsible type that can roll in and only have their seats removed or collapsed all the way. It all depends on the model involved. I like the new TRIOT trikes, but they aren't folding types. The AZUB Ti-fly, the Catrike, Ice Trike, Hp Velotechnik, and the Greenspeed to name a few all have folding models that even have quick release tires. This is the wave of the future and all van designers need to seriously consider this strong trend when designing these vans. A great design would be for upright and folding recumbent trikes.

Dear Neil, I think you do a great job at reviewing commercial camper vans. At first I was excited about the Revel as a 4x4 van. Then I looked at the promo material which Winnebago provided and I soon lost interest. Too many compromises and too claustrophic. This isn't really an off road vehicle. I've not seen anyone evaluted the Sprinter Van 4x4 vs. the regular Sprinter Van in terms of drivability on regular roads or inclement weather or off road conditions. In other words are there really any advantages to paying extra for the 4x4? Thanks for another excellent review. Barb
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Barb. well thank you very much. it is a great question and point you bring up: how practical is any 9 foot tall camper van going to be off roading? I mean honestly. Some people have pointed out that there are people taking them out to all kinds of crazy wilderness places and I believe that but is the average person going to do that? Are any of us really that knowledgeable and prepared for off roading? It isn't as simple as: flip a button and go off roading. You have to be prepared for the worse. How do you extricate yourself from a situation where your 4x4 sprinter is stuck and you're in the middle of nowhere. Most of us probably would not have the knowledge or the necessary equipment to deal with such a situation. Those who do may find that they can access where they need to get to using a regular 2 wheel drive Sprinter and having the proper training and equipment. Others will find that having a much better 4x4 SUV can get them into and out of hard to navigate terrain better than the 4x4 Sprinter. It is a great point that you bring up Barb.

hi, jMon. I put in the description but not in the video itself. The starting msrp for the Revel is $142k. It comes with 3 standard AGM batteries - not enough in my opinion to run a compressor refrigerator plus and induction cooktop.

@@Ultramobility I own a revel. If the sun is decent, it runs the fridge, the stove for at least a meal being cooked, whatever energy you need for lighting at night, running the furnace (though diesel powered the heat exchanger is a energy hog) for most of the night, and whatever other things you can throw at them. I did some blm camping in Grand canyon in the middle of April and my batteries were usually topping off by 2pm with the solar panels. I've been pleased as far as that goes. I'm sure on a cloudy day you'd be screwed though.

I've been checking out vehicles for a month and intend to buy at the end of the year and this is the first I heard of RVs being unhappy in the winter. I intend to live in my class B and the Ascent is currently top of my list, but is it designed for winter use? Thanks
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
hi, apollion888 - unfortunately it is not winter ready. that is to say that the holding tanks are not heated and parts of the water lines are exposed under the van to the elements. You can use the Ascent in the winter but it will need to be winterized - antifreeze pumped through all the lines and tanks emptied. you will not be able to use any water. You can carry your own water of course but should not dump it down the drains. You can flush with antifreeze to use the toilet if you like.
@apollion8886 жыл бұрын
thank you, then the Ascent is out, the Revel is in. Is the Aktiv all-year-round? Could you suggest a third? I care nothing for the 4x4 but won't kick it out of bed, and thank you for pointing me in the right direction
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
aktiv is not 4 season ready. the paseo is by Winnebago built on the ford transit platform. The Travato 59g and 59K is pretty close to winter ready : interior plumbing, heated tanks. if you're willing to go to the 170 inch wheelbase then the Coach House Arriva (www.coachhouserv.com/model-V24.php#specs) has heavy duty insulation, heated tanks and interior plumbing.

SS Agile 4x4 is right. Your assessment is on point but I would not give such a blanket accolade to Winnebago on the Revel. They are having issues with their roof rack and solar to the point of having a recall to fix the crappy plastic mounts as they are cracking under simple road going stresses. On the group on FB there is one recorded incident where the entire roof rack flew off while on the highway on their maiden voyage!

Yes, it is innovative in many respects, but I checked one out at a dealer and felt the build quality and materials used were sub par (now I am being generous). I was very interested in the Revel until I actually was able to look at the inside. I guess folks are willing to accept lower quality to get a fully equipped 4x4 adventure van of the dealers lot. Hopefully Gen 2 will be better.

I figured out how this rig could work for a wider user base. Get an Airstream basecamp or the new nest. Then you’d have real usable living space as a basecamp while you rip around in the 4x4 mode. My way someone can run around all day being a kid and have plenty of space for their toys and if they are out too long the Revel would be an adhoc overnight base but they would still have a usable space waiting for them.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
that's a great point. I took a look at the Nest recently. very nice although expensive at $50k. still it could be a great alternative. gives you plenty of space plus you just hitch it up to your 4x4 and go on your way.

An obviously missing extra is a powered winch; especially when one or two are off in the woods or boondocking in the snow.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
that's a great point. folks who are true overlanders and offroaders know what to look for and what is missing. most of us (myself included) do not. I watched a great KZbin video of a couple who really know their off roading stuff and you know what? They do it all in a 2WD sprinter! They say if you know what you're doing; have the right training and equipment the 2wd will do you just fine. i found that interesting.
@unicornlxi6 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility That’s an interesting observation. I’m a 69 year old newbie when it comes to RV’s so I’m unable to debate the point. However, between 1975 and present, my now deceased wife and I have owned 3 fwd VW Rabbit/Golfs, a 4WD Subaru wagon, and an AWD Outback Wagon and an AWD Outback Sedan. In snow, which would be my primary off dry pavement use, a FWD VW WITH four studded tires would stand up to anything, the AWD Subaru’s worked seamlessly, and the 4WD had to be switched back and forth depending on road conditions. However, I imagine the lack of a longitudinal drive train would help an RV with ground clearance as it did my VWs, idt anything is a substitute for the clearance of the 4WD Sprinter. My purpose of use would be to camp, driveway surf, and use the short RV as an around town SUV. At my age, a small bathroom is a must, as is heat if caught overnight in a blizzard. I guess when you come right down to it, I have become infatuated with the Mercedes 4WD Sprinter. It fits all of my wishes and uses. A winch would make me feel that much more at ease about getting stranded (something which happened to me several times years ago. But I was much younger and stronger and traveling with friends the same age). Keep up your great purpose of use, brutally honest reviews.

Great review as always! I think you missed the cassette toilet... I agree that it's going to fit a very, very narrow niche market and if someone told me that they wanted one I'd tell them to wait for a while because I think a lot of people that are getting them now will not be happy with the Spartan interior of the cassette toilet and many might be coming back on the resale market.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
lol, yeah i was just so taken aback by the Frankenstein closet/bathroom that I completely forgot to mention that the toilet is cassette. not good for boondocking which is also a head scratcher given how they are marketing this van.
@ran61106 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was checking one out in Arizona a couple of weeks ago and the salesman said the rig was designed to go in for some 'hardcore' roughing it for a long duration. I chuckled and asked him just how long of a duration would a 5 gallon cassette give 1 or 2 people. Another point, if you are out doing serious physical stuff a good quality sleep is important and when I climbed on the bed they lost me with how hard and uncomfortable it was. I kind of liked the 3 Group 31 AGM Batteries but with all of the cutting edge stuff (for Winnebago) they added I was surprised that they didn't use Lithium. Like you I was intrigued at first blush by the overall idea but as soon as I started looking at the details I realized that it wouldn't be a good fit for many, many of the potential class-b buyers. Anyway, as always a wonderful and well thought out review! Thank you!

Revel appeals to skiers... especially back country skiers and adventurers. 4 season and 4x4 gets you more places than most. Revel is spartan in amenities compared to anything else yet that must be trade off for the 4 season 4x4 ability. Could use a bit more storage, like for clothing and sports gear.

I've been shopping around for a while and THIS is definitely on my list of favorites. As for the market of who this would be suitable for...... a suburban mom like me with a potty training toddler in tow, could be considered as that. This would be a fantastic grocery getter. No there aren't 4 of the 3piont seat belts, where the back lounge seats have only the lap restraints, but it's enough to be able to secure 1 if not 2 baby seats (that have a 5piont haness) which have their own head rests, lol

Good review as usual and like you said that if you want a all season 4x4 Class B your choices are very limited. I’’m looking for one that would allow me to go anywhere mo matter the weather.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Jeffrey. If you want a no fuss all weather rv then you're choices are limited to something like the Revel, Paseo, Travato (kind of) and the Arriva by Coachhouse. keep in mind that you can still use any camper van in the winter as long as it is winterized which isn't a huge deal.
@jennycraigadventures33146 жыл бұрын

@midnite227676 жыл бұрын
Good review, rig is a mixed bag. I agreed with much you had to say about this camper. Can you explain why so many RV manufacturers choose to make all their Class B vans roughly in the same configuration as each other? Is it because that is what's selling? You say the Revel is in back order. Why aren't more builders designing more rigs based on European design? There is such a diversity over there compared to here. Why is US build quality so shoddy? Maybe because folks just keep on buying them anyway? Guess that's why so many are building their own van conversions.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
My personal opinion is that the European market caters toward younger families and the US market caters toward retirees. Those two different markets dictate the layouts of the van. In Europe you have to be able to carry minimum for people seatbelt where there are two adults and likely two children and the two children should ideally be seated upfront that also means it in Europe you need to have sleeping accommodations for four. Those are pretty stringent requirements and that’s the reason why you get the lounge upfront configuration foremost camper vans in Europe. In United States it’s mainly a couple and so having extra seat belts and sleeping accommodations for children is not a requirement. That gives you more flexibility in your layout and one of the best layout is the rear lounge/bedroom. That’s the reason why you see so many RV manufacturers in North America use that particular layout. As far as quality, just like in Europe there are some RV manufacturers that have higher quality and some that have lower quality. I think it’s a misconception the European RVs are “that are built“ and cost less. The reality is that day have less components than we do in North America and those components are expensive we should drive up the cost of RVs. However with product offerings from companies like CorradoSpace we are now seeing lower priced camper van options here in North America that also have quality components like let him ion batteries voltstart and solar.
@stephenschuit47186 жыл бұрын
Good overview. You cover many, many details; so, why not add the price range?, which for many us, might be the most important consideration.

There is a lot to like...including the Happijac bed. But the fit and finish is not a 140K RV. The $10 thermostat with all the myriad switches and dials...ugh.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
yeah I saw that $10 themostat and thought "are you kidding me?" in a $140k van? what product designer approved that? honestly spend like $10 more and put in something more modern. It baffles me how these product designers miss really obvious points like that. It irks the designer in me.
@subversivevegan6 жыл бұрын
The fridge is not a good choice, imo, either. If this is an off-grid/winter performer, then a more efficient (and sleeker/better looking/modern) compressor fridge would be expected. Maddening that they came so close to making a great vehicle.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
for bookdocking they should have gone with a 3-way in my opinion. you can last much longer but candidly, that cassette toilet is the limiting factor for bookdocking. 5 gallons is not going to last you long and if there are two of you it would only be a few days.
@subversivevegan6 жыл бұрын
If they REALLY want to build an all-season adventure vehicle, they should look closely to what van builders (esp. in Colorado & Oregon) are creating: rigs that can go and stay off-grid for weeks. 700-1,000 watts of solar, a composting toilet, lithium batteries, platform bed with large slide-out underneath for bikes/gear, a hyper-efficient compressor fridge, etc. This Revel is an expensive "adventure" vehicle best suited to campgrounds and weekends.
@Judy-cm6kp6 жыл бұрын
Can you provide details on who makes these vans?
@DavidisDawei6 жыл бұрын
The loft bed is a NOT a good idea if you cannot move the bed manually In addition, hat are you doing with the items stacked in the back when you go to use the bed? If you really need a 4x4 option, go with a camper on the back of a pick up truck
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
yeah if you go onto the FB Revel group you'll see that many people show pictures of them tying down all this equipment in the back including bags of loose items. They need more storage that doesn't involve the bathroom.
@DavidisDawei6 жыл бұрын
This is something I worry about. If I hit the road for an extended period of time with a Class B, I just can't bring a lot of stuff. I've seen people add external storage, but to roam and explore, I don't know if it is practical to try to bring along bikes, kayaks or other larger items...lots of trade offs when selecting the right vehicle.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
yeah it goes back to my video about use cases: what are you primarily using the rig for? many people are allured to the idea of a 4x4 but candidly they'll use it a couple times when they first get it and then the rest of the time they're using it like everyone else as a normal camper van. in that case, the sacrifices made for the 4x4 are not worth it. you're better off getting a more comfortable and better built non 4x4 camper van that better meets your needs.
@jennycraigadventures33146 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility I think the group you might be overlooking forgetting that makes this more than just a niche market is skiers/snowboarders. We’d like a 4-season 4x4 so we can drive to ski resorts without having to put on chains, have a warm interior to change into our ski gear and maybe take a lunch/hot cocoa break, and then have our sleeping quarters on wheels, even in cold conditions. I’d anticipate going on 3 to 4 day trips in something like this.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
i get what you're saying and maybe i'm just not as in tune with the market as I thought but the market that you describe seems like a niche market to me. don't get me wrong I think its great that manufacturers like Winnebago are creating products for all different types of buyers. it wasn't too long ago that almost all the products were designed for reitrees. that's still the majority of the buyers but there are new types of buyers coming into the market and the revel certainly is a van for those buyers.
@scottanson75246 жыл бұрын
Great review... winnebago is not know for the best build quality as seen ... but 4x4 off Grid is a great idea thanks for the look ! 👍🏻
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
hi scott, well i have to hand it to Winnebago this time on the revel - they are not using stick framing and staples. they are using extruded metal for the cabinet framing which is necessary for any 4x4 off road camper van. but the rest of the fit and finish is in my book sub-par. it is a great idea but needs better execution. let's hope the revel 2.0 fixes some of the issues we see.
@DavidHuffTexas6 жыл бұрын
I'd really like to see more mfgs going for extruded aluminum cabinet framing, and maybe some sort of lightweight, honeycomb panels, for cabinetry. I'm not a big fan of the 30-yr old look of some of the woodwork in lots of RVs. To say nothing of stick framing and staples for construction (no thank you). Maybe take a cue from the ocean-going yacht builders for rugged, lightweight, maint-free interior stuff (?)
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. Roadtrek in particular needs to update their interior wood finishes (they aren't the only ones). PW has done it with their curved radius cabinetry. Roadtrek experimented with highgloss flat cabinetry but it isn't widely available on their vans. Pity because I really like the look of it.
@DavidHuffTexas6 жыл бұрын
Agree. PW's radius cabinetry looks good & pretty modern. But the interior design in some RVs looks straight out of the 1970s. Like something my parents would be keen on (and I'm in my 50s).
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
me too david and i agree but even my parents would not want some of the interior finishes on some of these class b's!

Hi super Sammy thanks for the comment. Sorry if I came off sounding complaining I don’t mean to. Ultramobility well from what I've seen for example I think the Hymer comes with 650w and 1600 amp hours and a backup generator that's automatic. So my question is which is cheaper to own this or house? If my goal is to go through college and not something like an apartment which is more feasible cuz I would like to invest in something like this. And you said that there are already Vans like this can you give me links? Oh and even 1600ah is not enough to run AC and usage for 24 hours.. about 8 hours only
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
is where you living requiring you to run the AC most of the day? if so your choices are limited to something from Roadtrek/Hymer. You can get vans with 1600AH of batteries , beefy second alternator and lots of solar. but you pay for all this and the question is do you really need it? living out of the van is another story. the quality of the hymer is okay. not great. go to the facebook owner's group for the aktiv and search for quality. you'll see other owner's real tales.

Do you think the Revel will be offered in a gasoline chassis soon since Mercedes Benze is now producing gasoline engines?
@trc20016 жыл бұрын
Hello Neil, First and foremost, I absolutely love your reviews. That said, comparing this Revel to say a Pleasure-Way Ascent or the Roadtrek Agile 4X4 implies you do not understand this market. You did not discuss as an example that one can locate the solar panels in the sun, while the Revel is in the shade or it has a diesel firing heating system that uses a hydronic glycol mixture to circulate thru heat exchangers for coach heat, and flow adjusted for continuous hot water (seriously!). There are many other issues you did not cover, like the clever rack system for carrying kayaks and have solar. You do have a valid point on having one LCD interface panel for all of the controls. Its 2018 and this unit should be packed with the latest and greatest. You were not happy with the AGM batteries rather than the lithium. However, this is because lithium batteries are terrible in cold/hot weather. The reason so many people want this unit is that it is everything Winnebago would never have built. Its almost as if they contracted the design out to say Outside Van or something and then added all the trick things nobody is doing. They even have an option to remove the Winnebago stickers! It seems to me that Winnebago design team really looked at what people are doing outside of commercial builds and looked at what the Sprinter home-built crowd was up to. Neil, you are awesome and you do a great job. This is the first review however that I feel you really missed the mark. Sorry.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Fair enough and I appreciate good feedback, Mark. Here's some food for thought however: the Revel is being marketed to a niche market segment and I'm not going to cover a niche. I will cover the product as it may or may not appeal to my audience which is a broader camper van enthusiast/prospective buyer. Also who cares about the hydronic heating? I mean really. I had it on my CS Adventurous - it's just a heating system that yes is also used to heat the holding tanks. It doesn't allow you to boondock longer - in fact I'd argue that it is a simply a result of having to remove the propane tank to allow for better ground clearance - once you do that you have to replace components that rely on propane with something else - so this is a result of that. No bonus points awarded. I have lithium batteries, use them regularly. they work fine in hot weather and fine in cold weather. the battery monitoring system can handle things just fine so that's just an excuse for WGO not using them. It rubs me the wrong way when I hear excuses for them. WGO wants to market the Revel as a real outdoors person's camper - that implies boondocking in my mind yet the Revel has a small 5 gallon cassette toilet and AGM batteries that will barely cover the use of the compressor refrigerator. Then they put in an induction cooktop because, well they had to once they took out the propane. So you don't really have enough energy or black tank capacity to boondock more than a couple days - for a van $140k van that's preposterous. Finally, serious 4x4 adventurers can and do just fine with regular old 2 wheel drive sprinters (take a look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4q2mH-FhZtmhKc these guys are serious off roaders and they make excellent points.) Other serious off roaders are leaving comments here that also attest to the fact that their money can be better spent elsewhere. So where does that leave us? I guess in my final analysis I just don't buy the WGO marketing hype around the Revel. People are going to buy this thing and then be disappointed in its limitations. I mean the thing only comes with a 1 year warranty for crying out loud... for $142K! So in that respect yes I do feel that it should be compared against other more viable products in the market because as a 4x4 I just can't take it seriously (I mean are you really going to take a nearly 10 foot tall vehicle off road? It's not going to clear many trees and those acrylic windows are going to get scratched up). Sorry if I offend you or anyone else but that's my opinion. Rant done.

Cool, you linked to one of Nate and Steph's videos! They are a bunch of fun to watch, and seem like very "genuine" people with a practical take on things. Not saying I'd travel *exactly* the same way they do, nor am I nearly as outdoorsy & athletic, but I still get a lot out of their channel. And I absolutely agree with their opinions on 2wd vs. 4wd.

I own an Audi eTron hybrid. I have the same problem as all vehicles with lithium batteries (like Tesla). Their sweet spot is 75 deg. Audi does not recommend over 110 deg F or below zero (F). Lithium batteries are not as good at high or low temperatures as AGM. I would guess most people do not use their RV in super extreme cold or hot environments. The real benefit of Lithium is the depth of discharge benefits, lithium-ion batteries also have a longer useful life; they can cycle more times without significant loss of capacity. You didn't mention the clearance height of the Revel (10") vs Pleasure-Way or the Roadtrek is made for an RV park (6").

hey bret thanks for your comment. i have lithium batteries and used them in -30 degrees no problem. they discharge just fine in extreme cold. they need to be warmed up before you charge them in extreme cold. with regards to ground clearance, I believe both the Revel and SS Agile 4x4 have the same ground clearance.

No you can’t leave your bed made up.. the bed uses the two non movable sides as pa of the actual bed length to make up “the bed”
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
hi there, tradersato! thanks for sharing that information. i thought you could at least leave maybe your sleeping bag up there.
@billredding20006 жыл бұрын
Yes, you still can. Just fold any over-hanging blankets up onto the main platform and raise it. No big deal. But we never saw the bed anyway, as it was never lowered in this video... -- BR

This layout is very crowded. Why aren't you guys watching the multiple van builds that are more practical and more liveable, with more floor space. Your vans are great looking but definitely not warm looking. It would suit your company to ask them for their input at a small fee of course.

Love the layout but design/quality is lacking. The Revel has already been recalled for safety issues. Winnebago didn't do the proper testing before rushing it to market.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug do you know what they ordered the recall for on the revel?
@Tedterranova6 жыл бұрын
That statement is a bit hyperbolic. The recall is for roof rack brackets possibly cracking and a potential issue with the Kiddie fire extinguishers. There’s no huge engineering or design issue.

thanks for the clarificdation ttnova!

Wow, hopefully when those solar panels fly off the roof with the rack they don't hit my windshield, glad to hear ttnova is willing to take one for the team.

The fact that these are $100,000 or more changes everything
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
in what way does it change everything? I'm curious...

the majority of the people commenting and watching this probably don't have a clue. If you ask me for the features and materials used these rigs are WAAAYYYYYYY over priced.

I don't like the loft bed. I would like a system where I have a permanent garage that is just tall enough to put up to 4 bikes in the back and then have the bed in a fixed place. I think if someone is paying $140K for this (dealers in our area are upcharging to $200K) then the buyer should have the option of a fixed bed.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
i hear you. $140k is a lot to ask for this van. check out this week's live stream. a caller said they found the Revel for around $118k

If anyone else was trying to figure out how he filmed this, he used a 360 camera on a monopod.

Well I'am sure, a 4 seasons RV ???? maybe but the layout is.........there is a market for this model but nor for me.

Claude, I couldn’t agree more. This is more of a niche market product for outdoor adventure type is definitely not for the mainstream market.
