A similar comment applies to Hyundai's sister brand, KIA. I've owned two KIA Sorentos (2012 and 2018), the first vehicle Albert Biermann controlled fully when he came to Hyundai/KIA. Over those years I've seen the Sorento improve each and every model year, not just between major refreshes or generational changes. When I asked my wife to consider giving up her much loved 2012 Sorento she made a list of the negatives and minor issues she had found in the vehicle. Literally every single item had been rectified on the 2018 model and several (e.g. suspension harshness) had been dealt with as early as the 2013 model year. I try to be objective about automotive brands and avoid fanboy-ism but the Korean manufacturers make it tough.
@karlp84845 жыл бұрын
@@stephenhendricks103 I drove a Hyundai rental for 7 hours in Queensland in 2010 and came away not believing how bad it was. The ride was floaty *and* harsh at the same time. I thought, how is this possible? The cars today are like they come from a completely different manufacturer. I hear things like Hyundai/KIA use proprietary grades of high tensile steel from the steel mill (Hyundai obviously) for each location on the car, and actually, road test each model for each market and adjust the suspension settings accordingly.

In 2018 I bought a Hyundai Elantra GT Sport with the 1.6 ltr. engine. Semi fun to drive but very practical with lots of cargo space and a nice sporty interior...and it runs on regular gas. Hyundai has a version of that in Europe that is a true "N", unlike the 2019 Elantra GT N we have in the USA. I'm biding my time in hopes they will bring that hot hatch to the USA, then I will jump on it. The Veloster is not very practical in my eyes.
@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
You're not alone in being disappointed that Hyundai opted to send the Veloster N rather than the i30N to the US. There are few (if any) markets with both vehicles. Apparently Hyundai believed it would make a bigger splash with the less expensive Veloster in the US. I suspect they're correct.

Great review as always Alex! I would say though, I don’t know why most reviewers tend to get pigeon holed on competition by using price only, or performance only. Many folks, including myself, have sometimes shopped in a price category, other times a performance category, and yet, other times based upon space and room. So, I think you can compare the Veloster N to a number of other vehicles, depending upon which category you’re in...first, since most probably look at price, look at other vehicles in its price range...for others, it’s about the size, so then compare it to others in the size category, etc...For example, when I was shopping two seater convertibles, I was driving Miatas, vettes, F-types, A-5 and S-5s, 2 series BMWs up to the M4, and finally the Boxster. To me, the feel and overall dynamic was most important to me, followed by reliability. I wound up with the Boxster. While price was a factor, it was not the main factor for me.

There's no way around it. Mr. Biermann and his colleagues at Hyundai have done a remarkable job designing and producing a near "track ready" vehicle at a price point that's simply jaw dropping. Assuming, of course, that the Veloster N can be purchased at something close to MSRP. But even if it suffers from a "market adjustment" premium that's also likely to be true of the Civic Type R and the Golf R so the value advantage remains with the Hyundai. Personally, my track days are limited to two-wheeled vehicles so I'm not in a position to exploit several of the Veloster's most appealing features. And with a family (and affordable insurance) I'm too responsible to exploit those features fully anywhere but on a track. Furthermore, while the styling of the Veloster is more appealing than the "boy racer" looks of the Type R, it still bears the marks of a design derived from a Hot Wheels template. Therefore I'll stick with my Stage I tuned Autobahn trim GTI, a vehicle I purchased last summer for $32,000, a price I suspect is just about what I'd be paying for a Veloster N with the performance upgrade. For that I have a considerably more premium interior, a much more versatile vehicle as a daily driver, and one I can take my wife, daughter, and big dog along for the ride in comfort. I wouldn't criticize anyone who makes another decision. If I were looking for a track toy the Veloster N would be at the top of my list, especially in terms of value for the price. Just one caution, though, I think I'd avoid purchasing a used version unless I knew far more about its history and the driving habits of a previous owner than I'm likely to know purchasing a used car.

Thank you for the stellar review and class comparisons at the end. The Civic Type R may definitely be the better performance car and family car, but the 275hp Hyundai Veloster N cannot be beat as an under $30k sports car package. As someone who never needed AWD, the Subaru WRX sedan is a wash. I wonder how many more cars Hyundai and Honda could sell if they offered an automatic along side the manual transmission considering how American sales grands stand.
@npaul41715 жыл бұрын
We're going to find out as Hyundai is slated to release a DCT of the vN. Presumably, this will likely be a different (and wet) DCT given the torque produced by the N's Theta II, and it will probably be done right given they went to such painstaking levels to do just about everything right with this car, down to some of the most minute design details. For now, I like my N with the third pedal...down the road when my arthritis gets worse, I'd definitely consider the same car with a DCT.

Been looking hard at the GTI and Veloster N comparison. GTI actually has 220+Whp, not BHP, stock. The Veloster N dyno's in at around 215-250whp, depending if you got lucky on the engine lottery. So they actually compare really well without going up into Golf R. But still, the N experience with the dynamics, suspension, and sound is something else to behold.

They're coming from the factory with horsepower variations as drastic as 35? I have a hard time believing this. Maybe 5.

I test drove one the other day and I was going to test drive other makes , now I’m not , I want the N , it was bad ass

I have a 2014 V Turbo, I wanted the N in that black paint but I hate the baby blue seatbelts and the lack of interior options. No leather seats and I like my heated leather seats.

Alex, I am surprised you forgot about Mini when you were referring to Veloster pretty much being the only performance car in its class (now that Fiesta is gone). Cooper S is pretty fast and fun to drive and it is similar in size. If that's not enough, there is JCW version for just above 30k that should directly compete with Veloster.

It competes with the Veloster Turbo and Ultimate...

The Veloster has always seemed to me to be a Honda CRX with a back seat. My CRX Si was nothing but fun.

The N looks like it multiples the pure fun of my 1990 CRX Si, not to mention its added versatility with the back seat & side door.

The market that Hyundai attacked is a market that Ford, Honda and VW left open. Like there is nothing in Honda's lineup that's in between the Si and Type-R. Nothing in Ford's lineup that is between the Focus ST and RS. Nothing in VW's lineup that's in between the GTI and R. The N is meant for people that have considered an Si, ST or GTI and said "I want just a little more car than this" but just can't do the extra $10k-$15k extra for the next level up. Like it's $5k over an Si and $5k less than a Type-R. This is kind of why reviewers are finding it hard to compare it to another car because the performance pack doesn't really have a direct competitor. It's all indirect competitors.
