It doesnt have good enough black levels nor native contrast in order to play in the league of the big boys. Also the fact that is a UST is not helping the image, becouse a lot of the light will bounce on ceilling instead of bouncing back to you. You cant change the laws of physics. UST projectors are only good for rooms with ambient light and only when used with a dedicated UST ALR screen. They are competing against TVs not against home cinema projectors.

I´ve seen in autum last year the german presentation of JVC NX5, NX7 and NX9. When the axtual N5 is calibrated (early models had sometime halo issues) and with the actuals firmware with "Frame Adapt HDR" its not such a big difference between NX5/NX7. Not so big for additional 2000 bucks.I took part this spring, at a calibration workshop with Epson TW9400 (US name UB 6050) and JVC NX5 . The Epson has more lightpower but a gray blacklevel. Its good for livingroom theatres. My recommendation would be a secondhand Sony VPL-VW760ES (US name VW885ES). It fullfill all your requirements and during the upcoming season time some homecinma enthusiasts grade up to the Sony VPL-VW870ES (US Name: 995ES) My local Stewart/Sony/JVC dealer got last month 7 used VW885ES with 150 to 900 operating hours for 6500 to 8700 Euro. Okay, I`ve seen there is a BIG price gap between actual Europe 12.949,36 € incl. VAT and USA $19,998.00. Perhaps you should inform about reimport - if POTUS Trump not has set there additional punitive duty. (Sorry for my bad school english)

@@FamilyHomeTheater My house is under construction and won't be completed for a few months. This video is literally where i came to a conclusion this past week after reading and researching my tail off. I plan on trying to get the JVC NX-5 projector as it seems to hit a lot of the high bars without crushing you with cost. I haven't looked into the lens shift with lens memory but based on what you are saying.. you can get a 2.35:1 screen to work with a 16:9 image by using those features? Thanks for the knowledge!
@FamilyHomeTheater4 жыл бұрын
@@trelaskillz4283 Excellent choice... I haven't been able to upgrade yet, but if I had the money today the NX5 would be it. Yes, lens memory is what you (and I) need for a hassle free CIH setup. You basically adjust the projector to display a 16:9 image and save it to a memory. Then adjust for a 2.35:1 image and save to a second memory. And you can do this for many different oddball aspect ratios somewhere between 2.35 and 16:9. The ETREMELY IMPORTANT thing to remember is to use a projector calculator like the one at projectorcentral.com to figure out your mounting distance. If you mount too close, you may not be able to zoom out enough to fill the screen. Too far back and you won't be able to get a 16:9 image to fit. You need to make sure the mount distance will be within the zoom capabilities of the projector. Fortunately, the JVC is equiped with a generous amount of zoom, so you should have a decent amount if wiggle room to make sure your mount is in a good sturdy location.
@trelaskillz42834 жыл бұрын
@@FamilyHomeTheater Thank you! You don't know how much this means to me. Unfortunately, after talking to installers in this area.. I've come to the conclusion they don't know nearly enough about this to get me the best deal and design. Being able to discuss this makes a big difference. Luckily, I've come across people like yourself who make this a lot easier to understand and get the important information. I was using that tool, but didn't know what the zoom range meant (but knew i wanted to stay in the middle range). Right now, the projector mounting throw distance should be 19'7" which will project a 138" diagonal screen. The zoom thus would 1.53 (1x-2x range). Based on what you were saying, i swapped the aspect ratio on the website from a 2.39:1 to a 16:9 and just zoomed that image size until it fit the screen size height which was 53" which places the room at 1.20x.
@FamilyHomeTheater4 жыл бұрын
@@trelaskillz4283 If you haven't already, you should go to AVSForum.com and check out their forums. There are lots of great people over there who can help with all the questions you may have, and lots of theater build threads to help you with ideas. There is a lot of knowledge over there to sort through. Checking the projectorcentral calculator, that distance will get you a 90" 16:9 screen at the minimum, and a 181" 2.39:1 screen maximum. As long as your actual size is between those, you are good to go. Given your height, it looks like 108" would be your 16:9 screen size, and 138" is your 2.35:1 screen size. Looks like you're good as far as distance goes, and you'll have plenty of cushion on both sides in case measurements aren't quite perfect.

Surprising not to see the best one in its class the Sony 295ES (well it was in the honorable mention category). You didn't mention the JVC 790r / RS540. You made a video for me comparing the 790 to the Sony 285. I bought the 790r. I never use the lens motorize features. I got the VMAX dual screen. 1.1 gain, not to expensive, You also didn't mention that with a laser projector there's no replacing the light source, you just throw it away. Also, you can get the JVCNX7 B stock, (which is brand new) from an authorized JVC dealer(av science) for $4200. With warranty. You make great videos. Please make more projector video's.
@FamilyHomeTheater5 жыл бұрын
I would still consider the 790 if I found a good deal on it. But if I could get an NX7 B stock for that price, I may just go full 4K. The reason I didn't mention the 790 is because it has been discontinued, and so the supply will be drying up pretty soon. So I figured the info would be getting out-dated pretty quickly. If it weren't discontinued, it would definitely have been mentioned as a great choice, especially since its contrast and black level is superior to the more expensive NX7. The only downsides are not true 4K, which may matter for gaming, and an older HDR implementation which could also be a drawback for gaming since you can't use MadVR with games.

@@FamilyHomeTheater - Great videos, I bought a JVC X790R and have had it for almost a year now. Going from mainly an LG OLED I was worried the JVC would not hold up as much especially in gaming, however, I was pleasantly surprised how good the HDR actually is after dialing in a few settings and after calibrating the color. It was very hard to get ordered but if you can find one I would definitely recommend it. And movies, of course, look even better. I am now using a custom-built ~156" (2.39:1) screen using Carl's AT screen material and it looks great on it.
@FamilyHomeTheater4 жыл бұрын
@@adamjarvis6162 I keep going back and forth with the X790. Unfortunately, the earliest I would be able to buy would be next year, so a lot depends on what comes out of JVC at IFA/CEDIA. The big pros of the X790 is it would save me money in more ways than one. Not only is it significantly cheaper than an N7 (even at street prices), I wouldn't have to get a high end graphics card capable of rendering at 4K, and I wouldn't have to get a new AVR. But if somebody manages to come out with a laser powered projector with great contrast and lens memory in the neighborhood of $5K, I'd get that. But by all accounts, the X790 is king of contrast and black levels for projectors at any price (unless you spend a LOT more money)
@level808885 жыл бұрын
I would go with sony 395 or 695. Comparing to jvc it has slightly worse black levels BUT sony has much superior motion handling engine - Motion Flow - which outperforms all crapy epson, jvc, benq motion engines. Second, unit itself and active iris in particular on sony is dead quiet. Compare it to awufull epson or rattling spining RGB wheel on DLP parts. Third, but not least: light path on Epson and others exposed to ambient air. So all dust, smoke, etc will destroy your projector performance over time. In sony's sxrd (and jvc's lcos) there are no such a problem.

@FamilyHomeTheater5 жыл бұрын
I've looked at ultra short throw projectors a little bit, but for my situation, they won't work. They tend to max out at 120", and I have what is essentially a 138" screen to fill. The other issue is I haven't seen any with lens memory, and since I like to run a constant image height setup, that is another big minus.

Optoma CinemaX P1 have a native contrast under 1500:1 so it's pretty trash for a dedicated home cinema. The black levels are also very poor. Also the fact that is a UST is not a good thing, because a lot ot he light will bounce on the ceiling instead of bouncing back to you. The pixels are also harder to align when the projector is UST because the way the light is spread thus resulting bigger problems with uniformity. Don't belive the marketing! The only good projector from optoma right now is UHZ65, which has an on/off around 3000:1 and decent black levels.
@georgepopescu13274 жыл бұрын
Watch out for the faux advertising, if you try to find some measurements you will find out that NX9 actualy have worse native contrast than NX7. Actualy the on/off contrast of NX9 is somehow equal with on/off contrast of NX5, which is very strange. I found this on two different sites. I know, it doesnt make sense but this is the truth.

Thanks for the video, I've been tossing up between the Epson 9400 vs the older 9300 which is a thousand dollars cheaper here. I had the 9400 (6050) here alongside the NX5 and interestingly, once calibrated, I found the NX5 black levels to be no better than the 9400, and the colour seemed better and brighter than the NX5. The colours also are off once the dynamic iris is enabled on the NX5, the whites were suddenly way off. It also forces YCC422 in 12bit mode, just something things to watch out for.
