a friend of mine wanted to get an EV for his family. His wife hated the looks of the Leaf, but wanted some range. I drive a Tesla Model S (bought it used 3 years ago) and before that, like you I drove a Volt, I loved my volt, but do love my Tesla more. anyway, I told him to go look at the Bolt on the used market as there are some great deals, (especially where he lives in the Pacific Northwest) His wife liked it and they bought one. I think that it is a great car for getting around town. I know that you can do a trip in it, but for me, I would need a little more comfort in those seats. When I had my volt, I bought it from a dealer that not only had a lot of used volts, and sold the most new volts. I got 3 free oil changes??? and I did use them, even though I hardly used the engine, I thought.. what the heck... the service department had no idea what to do with the electric side of the car. I know that there is a coolant in the batteries.. how often does that need to be checked? Anyway, while the service was friendly and the only problems I had were typical car issues, like window regulators etc. I was just not happy that nobody knew anything about the car

@@Chrisb8s Thank you for the comment Chris, means a lot that you would take the time to leave one! That is a great question regarding the battery coolant, I actually do not know the answer to that, but I probably should haha! How is your Model S holding up for you? The Model S is still a dream car of mine, but I have a Cybertruck on reservation and based on how bad winters are getting in Cleveland, I think its the better choice for me. The Dual Motor set up in the Model S is FANTASTIC in snowy conditions though, I just need ride height! Lastly, if you haven't yet, please consider subscribing. Exactly what software updates are you expecting? This isn't a Tesla with a lot of onboard hardware that isn't yet "enabled" until you pay for the option. GM can change the screen menu system but you won't magically get self driving or anything like that. It would be bug fixes at best, and then they still are stuck with the dealer network agreements that is probably preventing any OTA updating. The legacy brands are old nuts and bolts people and it will be a few years yet before the old guard is gone and the younger mangers are able to roll in the future. But I love my 2017 I picked up last year. The front seats I can live with but I'd add an extra pad if I had to drive long miles. My only other con is the ride is harsher than necessary. But coming from a 2002 Camry the Bolt is like a space ship.
@EverydayEV
@EverydayEV 3 жыл бұрын
Hey David, So first off, thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave this comment, I appreciate your support! I know the Bolt doesn't have the hardware that requires software updates like a Tesla, but I would love to see any software update be pushed to the vehicles OTA. Especially during the current pandemic, it would be nice if people could just stay home and expect a software update, like for the battery recall. My screen freezes from time to time, so even a remote diagnostic scan would be awesome to see if there is any failing equipment. Regarding your 2017 Bolt, which trim level did you pick up? Congrats on going electric! I bet that is a major change from your 2002, but an amazing change! I wish the LT trim had more cushion in the seats, but from my understanding, the Premiers are not any better. Thanks again David, if you haven't yet, please consider subscribing. I appreciate the good/bad/ugly feedback on this car. It confirms my reservations about owning a GM product, though if I find one at a good enough price, it may still be worth considering. I'm currently teetering between EV and PHEV, and with the variety of upcoming products looming, prices of existing ones have been going down considerably, so there are a lot more affordable options now than even just last year. My personal fave is currently the Honda Clarity, though I wish it were smaller and thus easier to park & maneuver. I pray for blessings and peace to you!

I have enjoyed a 2018 Bolt EV for nearly 3yr and over 40k miles. I also had a seat issue (cosmetic not functional) that was eventually fixed. No headlight issues and I am quite happy with the brightness. But I think they might’ve changed it between 2018 and 2019. Charging slowish, yes. Not a Taycan. Functional Absolutely. Carried lumber, logs, all sorts of things. Added a tow hitch for a 4 bike carrier. Works great. Took for a 1000mi road trip, that was painful with charging. But doing 300 in a day would be trivial. Seat comfort lacks and suspension lacks. Not a good road trip vehicle. Excellent daily driver. Great surround camera as well. Parking is a breeze.

I just sold my 2019 CHEVY Bolt lt to Carmax. I decided to let this car go after 1 year and half of ownership for a couple reasons. First, battery range was highly inconsistent and on average I would get around 200 miles for a full battery. Then, If i wanted to use AC or Heat it would be even lower than the 200. I purchased this car because of all the rebates and incentives, but I had no idea this car would devalue so much from the MSRP, had I known I would have bought a used one for 15-18k. Looking back, I should bought a used Volt.

I love my used Bolt, best deal out there! I definitely consider it a daily driver doing local delivery in the evening and commuting to school during the day. I make it through my 85-160 mile day with no issues, not just a "city car". I do have a small list of gripes about it though. The fact that the radio switches back to FM and yells at you every time you start the car is a Dislike. I find the headrests forcing you into a kyphotic neck stressing position if you attempt to put your seat anything close to upright a Dislike. I hate that Chevy has decided that we will no longer be able to upgrade stereos in OUR cars anymore...no BT 5.0 or newer USB ports as the years go by for us. I personally also find it absurd that my Bolt came with 17" rims and 50 series tires resulting in a terrible ride and extraordinarily expensive tires with increased install costs to boot(50 series = +$10/tire in a lot of places). This, being an economy car with an expensive battery, should have been configured with 15s and the same tire size as a Prius. The suspension is no where near up to the task of mitigating pot holes and speed bumps on 50 series rubber bands. And do not even get me started on the stupidity of implementing a 5x105 bolt pattern! . Thankfully I was able to locate a reasonably priced set of Chevy Sonic 15" alloy wheels which fit perfect with 205/65-15 Kinergy PT tires fitted, straightened out the legs of the headrests with a vice and got an AUX BT adapter to bypass the terrible stereo all together. I am much happier with the car for now, but the intentional lack of options to upgrade the infotainment system in future is very disappointing. I am still working out what to do about the poorly engineered and under-padded seats fit only for a ballerina and her vegan husband, but a pensioner's coccyx seat cushion is solving the problem temporarily.

Brandon - a good review! The “shelf” in the cargo bay (Premier model only) is nice to have, especially for grocery runs where you don’t have to lift heavy things from - way down there. The weight vs wheelbase is at times an issue, causing a sort of hobby horse ride on certain roads, but overall the chassis is a blast, and a great first effort for Chevy. One pedal driving is well sorted, and the regen braking on this car is awesome. The basic shape of the body isn’t conducive to efficiency, especially at freeway speeds, but compared to an ICE car - it’s way efficient! You didn’t mention the 360 cameras, which a lot of people think is a neat parking lot tool - is that in yours - as built? Or the rear view mirror camera that allows you to see rearward when the rear seat is stuffed. Lastly no sunroof available, which is a bummer. Preheating using your phone or keyfob on a cold day warms up the battery, turns on the climate control, plus seat heaters and rear window heater - nice! I’ve got 56k miles on my 2017 and it’s still a joy to drive.

Lease definitely makes the most sense at this point. I love the Bolt EV for allowing us to drive electric since 2017, before anything else that could go way beyond 200 miles was available at this price point, but options like the ID.4 and Nissan Ariya will soon slide into this space. The Bolt EUV should go toe-to-toe with them and address some of the good concerns you mentioned (Super Cruise for driver assist, better interior, maybe even faster charging?!?), which should hopefully mean the MSRP of cars like the Bolt and Nissan Leaf comes down (officially) into the $25k region. Alternatively, used Bolts are pushing down to $15k and below, which marks a great deal for a first EV or low-maintenance daily driver. Perhaps you could add "Buy Used" to Everyday EV reviews in the long-term? Look forward to more!

But brand new 2020 Bolts are selling as low as $22k with that $8500 instant Chevy rebate. The BMW i3S is by far a better vehicle in terms of build quality, navigation, autonomous driving, handling/performance.. The Bolt has the i3S beat on range, however, if you purchase the optional REx (range extender) in the i3S you can match the Bolts range. Both vehicles handle very well but the i3S has the advantage of being rear wheel drive. I think the Bolt is slightly faster from 0 to 60 and has a much softer suspension.. Both cars charge at 50kw. The 2020 i3S nearly $60k price tag is for that German badge because its certainly not for it technologies. I think a used 2018 i3S is going for $30k.. Not a lot to choose from in the subcompact EV range.

Very nice presentation- thank you! I have also been intrigued by EV's for years, and am waiting for my 2003 GTI to 'die', before I look at another car. The problem is, the VR6 engine is 'bulletproof', and it just keeps on functioning perfectly, for 18 years now! So it's cost effective for me to keep this one for now, but i'm educating myself on the subject. I just watched a fascinating video on the Bolt EV motor/drivetrain on the 'WeberAuto' channel here, which prompted me to check out other videos on the Bolt EV, and other EV's. I have never driven, or ridden in an EV, so my experience in electric cars is limited to my passion for slot cars from the 70's, LOL! Back then, there were many 'hobby shops' you could go to, and race your slot car against others, and it always blew me away at how super fast they were/are. So, i'm hoping it's only a matter of time before I can finally ride in one. BTW, i'm near Westlake, also Ohio! Good luck with the car, and cheers!

Yes, I would consider it an "everyday" EV. I believe it's the best value under $30,000 in EV's. I'd even say: A better value then a M3SR+. Esp if your price sensitive. I've wonder why so slow in DC fast charging? My thought. If they allow it to charge faster, would it harm the longtevity of the battery? Would the difference in allowing it to charge at 75kwh or 100kwh really equate to a big reduction in time? Whoud that worth an added risk of battery harm.
@EverydayEV
@EverydayEV 3 жыл бұрын
I agree! Especially if you can find a used example of the Bolt EV with low miles. I'm not honestly sure why GM limited the DC fast charging speeds to 50kw. Teslas built around the same time were able to charge above 100kw and have not seen much battery degradation. So I dont believe thats the reason!
@mamadouaziza2536
@mamadouaziza2536 3 жыл бұрын
The reason is because at the time most DC fast charge stations were only going up to 50kw or so especially those chargers found at the 7/11 or at truck stops and in Walmart parking lots. Tesla has its dedicated SuperCharger network of stations and charge points, Tesla can control the output of the chargers, so having the chargers and its vehicles charge at a higher kw is a no brainer. Now ChargePoint, EVgo, Electrified America and others are upgrading their charge points to 100kw plus chargers.

@@Frank71 Yes I know that, I already commented that EA, ChargePoint and EVgo have upgraded their chargers in a lot of places.. Hello fellow Twinsburgian: Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your Bolt purchase. I have been interested in the Bolt for about a year now, but reluctant to commit. While GM TALKS about converting all their vehicles to electric by 2035, they seem to miss some very important aspects required to get people to buy them. 1. Their dealers don't want to sell them. They shove them to the back of their lot and let the battery go completely dead. I understand this is ruineous to the battery pack, rendering the car to junk value. 2. The dealers do not have specially trained techs to work on the Bolts. 3. The Bolts software cannot be upgraded OTA. You must bring them to the untrained dealer service dept. to resolve bugs and get upgrades. The center console is likely to have software issues which GM is slow to fix. 4. The seats are terrible torture devises and GM is not doing anything about that. Interior materials are lowest cost available. 5. GM has not put forth the required effort to install charging stations throughout the country the way Tesla has. I understand the Bolt is not capable of informing you in real time of available stations based on your current location. Smartphone aps? Is there more than one charging station in Twinsburg? The battery takes too long to charge too. This issue alone turns away potential buyers. The Bolt could be a good selling model if GM would follow through with the details, but company management seems too far removed to listen to customer concerns. I'm still waiting to see if GM is serious about selling good EV's or just pushing media hype. I'm glad that you are enjoying yours. Good review.

If you haven't yet, please consider subscribing, I'm trying to reach 1,000 subscribers and your support means a lot! I don't live in the area anymore, but my parents do. I am always filming at this location because its a great spot! I brought the idea of EV charging stations up to the city council in 2015, which at the time the idea planted the seed for these future chargers. There are a total of 8 chargers (4 locations throughout the city). By the water park, the town square, city hall, and the golf course. All of them are free because they were installed using money from the VW diesel settlement. In terms of the Bolt, I understand why you would be hesitant with GM's dedication to EVs. I am hopeful they will meet their goals since more EVs on the road equal cleaner air for all of us. Regardless of the environmental impacts GM's business decision will bring, I hope they can implement it into a good product for customers to purchase. The Bolt is a fantastic commuter car and really spectacular for some longer drivers, but the charging speed and the software of the vehicle really hinder it. I am hopeful that with connected vehicles, GM will put out consistent OTA software updates, but I have seen nothing for the Bolt in 1.5 years of ownership. If you do happen to decide to go for the Bolt, I would absolutely recommend looking at used ones. You can find incredible deals on low mileage Bolts! Thanks again for the support, it means a lot!

Do you feel your particular car has more issues than average? I don't remember other Bolt owner channels sharing this many issues, which makes me wonder if yours is an oddity or they just aren't sharing to this level?

I’m not honestly sure, because every bolt owner I’ve talked to hasn’t had any of the issues my Bolt has had! So it might just be a rarity 😂 I do love driving the vehicle, I just think there’s plenty of roll for improvement.

I bought a 2020 Bolt Premier as it has real car controls instead of distracted driving on a giant IPad! I researched Tesla for 2 years as I was driving a 2013 Ford Focus EV and had the time! As I looked more and more sites I discovered how many low speed crashes Teslas had and none of the Teslas at the dealer were put together acceptably! Tesla is much like a motorcycle in a special niche where they need no seat belt, air bag or roll cage! Tesla gets away with constant distracted driving with no way to track eye contact with the road as the new EUV does have Cadillac’s eye tracking! I didn’t even know Apple CarPlay but I can’t imagine life without it! The HID headlights on mine are super bright, I am glad that it has no Electric badging as I got hate with my Focus that has Electric across the side and had people try to run me off the road the same as Tesla hate! Fortunately I never drive more than 100 miles/day so even driving a lot I only use 12 Amp 110v charging and get buy with never charging away but sometimes I have to catch up over a weekend! And I used PlugShare in the car to find lots of chargers in the onboard apps all the apps move from my phone to the car! Heated seats and wheel were standard in the Premier! My seat is quiet so his base must be the problem! I love that I got the paddle shifter you can use without looking whereas the new ones have stupid buttons! I keep the back seats down and put my dog in the back with a WalMart rug that fit the back perfectly and comes out and cleans easy! Lucky also my 2020 has no recall! I am making Tesla payments on my $27K Bolt so it will be done in one year!

Thanks for the review but I would be cautious about wanting OTA updates. I much prefer the release of a final good product the way software used to be but with advances in delivery methods everything now is pretty much early access leaving the end user as a beta tester for a product that 'can be fixed later".

The used Bolts have already dropped in price big time.. BMWs i3 has saw a slight drop in used prices but for the most part its used prices have not charged much since last year.. VW eGolf prices are still the same too.

@@J.O.R_BR_Overclocking all good choices! Sounds like it’s a very similar LT to what I have. What color? Also, I appreciate your words and taking the time to comment and let me know my video helped you both decide to go electric. My goal with this channel is to do exactly just that! Hi. Currently I own a 2019 premium Bolt. Your video’s are extremely good and I really appreciate you doing these. What bothers me about so many videographer’s is they just report what they read. I should say I live in Victoria British Columbia (Canada). I have had the new battery pack for a few months now. The last 8 charging sessions from my stage two charger have been 599km..I think that’s around 373 miles. Most state the Bolt gets around 370 odd km. I have never gotten that low. I also understand it depends what part of the country you are from. Also, and I’ve talked to other Bolt owners and not one has experienced any problems with anything loose like seats etc. it was just a little surprising to hear of your concerns. Also I have ordered a 2022 Bolt EUV primier which hopefully will arrive within the week. Just want you to know your comments and the way you present yourself is really good. Cheers

Hi Art! Thanks so much for your comment, that means a lot to us. Congrats on your replacement battery and your 2022 Bolt! It definitely seems like the replacement battery is giving you fantastic range. I think the most we ever saw was about 280 miles on our 2019 Bolt. Glad to hear the new battery is working well! The 2022 definitely has a much nicer interior. We aren’t sure why we had so many seat bracket issues, but it just seemed to have been our particular car that was the issue with that. Other than that the car was great! Cheers! - Tyler

I agree, it is too bad Chevy doesn't have GPS that can find you EV charging stations and assist you in navigation, on its display screen. Nissan has this. This should be standard on all Chevy Bolts that have DC fast charge capabilities.
@mamadouaziza2536
@mamadouaziza2536 3 жыл бұрын
Finding charge points should be standard on every EV nav system and DC Fast charging should also be standard. These EVs should be able to guide you directly to the charger and the car's system should tell you if the charger is online and either being used or not being currently used. The system should guide you to the closes charger within your battery's current range. The Bolt is just a car with a battery in it, its not a smart EV at all.. All the safety features and autonomous driving, DC fast charging, LED/Laser adaptive headlights, smart navigation, car temperature conditioning, heat pump all should be standard..

@@mamadouaziza2536 I agree 100%, however I'm not sure if autonomous driving should be standard. By leaving it optional, the price might be lower for some people who don't need it.

@@sbl17jackson37 Perhaps.. Its almost 2021 and such things as lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, self steering, self parking collision warning and braking and adaptive cruise control should be standard in a smart car.

Thanks for uploading!! An electric car not having the ability to locate chargers and no nav or option for adaptive cruise control could be a deal breaker.. The screen resolution of the rear camera is also not very good on the center console.. Also, DC Fast Charging is an option on the LT trim, it should be standard. All EV charge faster from 0 to 80% and the speed slows down after that. Its true 50kw charging slow compared to the Tesla Model 3 which chargers at 100kw plus. I think EVs from the Koreans and Germans are far superior than what GM currently has... Hopeful the Bolt will get better.
