I hope there haven't been too many changes in the past few years though. Note: I didn't even think about the costs of the tires needed to be included in the comparison too. We opted for the 450 because it opened a lot of options with horse trailers that have living quarters. It is a stiff ride until you get a heavy load on the back so it then rides comfortably. The one con at least in my state is that the 450 is considered a commercial vehicle so tags are triple the cost. Great video.

F350 dually comes standard with 4:10 rear and F450 is 4:30. Shorter tire on the F350 dually results in same rpm. Both turn around 2200 at 70 mph. 3:55 or 3:73 on a dually is silliness.

Great explanation of gear ratios and how they affect the vehicles performance and where it puts the strain while towing. Most people do not understand how critical the right ratio is for your towing needs.
@TermiteBenny5 жыл бұрын
Best way to explain gear ratios is to compare to a 10 speed bicycle. The easy gears are a lower gear ratio, easy to get going but requires a lot of peddling to go fast. The 10th gear is like a higher gear ratio, hard to get going but requires less peddling to go fast.

as a tremendously happy owner of a 2017 Platinum F-450 i say 450 every day. I hit 60k miles in a little over 2 years, but did just throw a DPF error and am waiting to get it in the shop. the reason its hard to find discounts on the 450 is that they are built in much smaller numbers than the 350. @ctdieselnut3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Especially for hot shotters or even RV'ers over 18k lbs. Having some remaining capacity makes things run so much easier, last longer(powertrain&brakes), and get better resale. I don't know why more people don't even consider it. If your talking f450's all the other costs involved other than vehicle prices are very close. Tax/reg/ins./brakes/tires/fuel/oil changes are all comparable, within 5-10% in my experience. Also, I think a lot of people don't realize this, they are so much more comfortable to drive all day. Huge trucker seats are ridiculously comfortable, a low hood/higher seating position gives better visibility, mirrors are 2x - 3x the size of a 450 550. I'm thinking of the freightliner fl 50 or equal size international. They are real trucks and every component is designed to last much, much longer than a glorified pickup or 450, and be safe and happy while doing it. Give em a chance, you may find it makes sense for you.

Saw you did a vid going from a 450 to a 350 saying the commercial tires on the 450 left you limited options for service. Then saw you went back to another 450 because it has better turning radius. So, you leave us a bit confused but I have never regretted my 350 dually purchase. In my cross country travels the turning radius has never been a big problem, and I have gotten into and out of some tight spots many times. I think the flexibility in tire service options trumps it by far

F450 is an awesome truck. If I were talking that kind of money, I’d just move up to the F650 so that there are zero limitations and the raised cab provides significantly better visibility. the best way to get a deal is to go in with a list of what you want in a truck and order it.. go from dealer to dealer with that list and the previous dealers price.. when you order a truck the dealer isn't paying interest on the truck until someone buys it.. personally i thing 1500 one invoice is a fair price to offer a dealer on an ordered truck.. 1000 for the dealer and 500 for the salesman.. not a bad deal to do some paperwork for a few minuets.. if they say no then move on to the next dealer.. likely a smaller volume dealer would be more inclined to take that deal because they don't have much going on day to day like high volume dealers...
@dpd167905 жыл бұрын
oh and that's 1500 over invoice and keep the manufacture rebates.. you can actually get the truck for less than what the dealer pays for it if you get good rebates.. and if you can figure what the hold back is on a truck then you can offer even less.. it wouldn't be surprising that a 90k truck can be bought in the high 60s low 70s with all factors considered...

Does 550 give more payload and 5th wheel towing capacity (greater % than 450 does over 350)? Have u reviewed custom hauler bed options over traditional truck beds ? Plus air suspension options for 450 or 550? Air suspension won't provide more capacity? But will help ride quality?

I'm considering the F550. Asked some Mechanics about going with a F450 over a F350 to pull my Grand Apen Teton Home 5th wheel. 24,000lb loaded. Full time so its loaded with stuff. Currently own a 04, 387 Pete semi. Axles singled and converted to elecric brake controls. Too expensive owning a semi when it needs fixing. Also driving to some restaurants or shopping places are blocked because its so big. When I asked 350 vs 450 everyone (mechanics, not sales people) immediately said go up one more step to the F550. Said there's not much difference in 350 to 450, but some real heavy differences on the next move to 550. They said the price is not that much diffence but though because of the expanded abilities of the 550 that industrial buyers make give you better used price and ability to sell when your done with it. Small dumps like landscapers use for instance. Anyone that can back up or dispute what they are telling me??? I feel like I'd rather make my decistion on the oppinion of mechanics over what sales people tell me. Help? Anyone tried both?

The number one reason I bought my 2017 F450 was it looked awesome. An F350 would more than easily handled our 19,000 lbs. of toy hauler. We were at the time hauling it with a 2015 F350. But I liked everything about the F450 except two things: 1. Yes, those Continental tires are ridiculously cheap for an $80,000 truck. BTBRV has discussed this awhile back. 2. The 4.30 is absolute overkill and totally unnecessary unless you're pulling over 25,000 lbs. Typical 20,000 lb. and under toy haulers just don't need it. For me, it felt like the truck never got to use the huge torque numbers it produces. Its biggest downfall is interstate speeds and then needing passing acceleration. I have been stuck in the passing lane pulling our toy hauler at 70 mph and needed to get ahead of the big rig beside me. You stomp on the accelerator and the truck feels like it's almost reached its speed limiter. It's as if the 4.30 causes the truck to run out of acceleration after 70 mph. My 2015 F350 with the 3.55 had plenty more "oomph" at interstate speeds to easily get ahead and around that big rig who doesn't feel like letting me in the right lane. These trucks are pushing 500 hp and 1000 lb./ft. of torque. Let them use it. The 4.30 doesn't let the F450 use that power unless you're pulling 30,000 lbs. of horses. Let's face it. That's a huge reason Ford made the thing anyway. A new F450 with an option to go with a 3.73 and that would be a far better tow rig for toy hauler/fifth wheel pullers out there.

JD and mark because of you guys I've cancelled my F350 and changed to an F450. As you both said....after shopping for a fifth wheel our tasted kept bringing us up to heavier and heavier pin weights. Love learning from you guys. When you need some toys from Stromberg let me know and I will take care of it personally.

Having just watched the KYD video, it’s kinda weird listening to the exact same conversation with different visuals.

Ok, it's confession time. My best friend and I have been led by God to do mission work and the direction we felt He was taking us was in getting an RV trailer (or Class A or C). With that bit of background the rest will make more sense. Being who I am, I never do anything without EXTENSIVE research so You Tube here I come. I was first introduced to KYD in the RVing for Newbies Tricks video. Having only RV exposure as little girls, we knew somethings, but found out VERY QUICKLY, how much we didn't know. I was so encouraged by Marc's tutorial, that I started looking for more. When I found videos where Tricia shows her tricks and tips for RV life, I became fully hooked. So my confession is this, I only just became a subscriber because I didn't want to get notices of new videos until I had completed my binge watching from all of your previous seasons. I have only been aware of KYD for two - three months, but have loved binge watching them. Your videos have become part of my weekly routine (well, now that I am out of the hospital - and feel confident that I am up to date with the weekly videos). Thank you so much for your desire to do this to help out older ladies with very little knowledge.

F450 all day and try and locate a fleet sales dealership I have found that they are more willing to discount to make the sale than a low volume dealership

First thing is Lazy Days RV will not let them drive off the lot unless they have the right tow vehicle. IMHO they will get the F-450, but on the same hand the F-350 will also do the job. You make great points of the downside of the F-450 (tires, price) but they are getting something (wide track steering) offsets the bad. The guy needs to keep a cool head because when a salesman see's a guy is in love then they have them, and negotiations go right out the window.

Myles Hansel I bought my F-450 after searching the US from FL to ME to WA to CA, I ended up buying it in MO for 58 with a 73 sticker.

The 10 ply tire on the 350 are much better in the snow then the 19.5 and you can feel the difference in tire pressure adjustment more in a 10 ply when you are dialing it in to what you like and need. I don't agree with your rear gear ratio. I have been running these trucks in business since 1984. 2 years ago I was running 3 of them. Trucks same load and trailer. On a run from Texarkana TX to Bloomington Ill. the truck with 4:10 got better mileage then the 355. With the 4:10 the truck almost never down shifts on the hills and I could hear the other truck screaming again and again down shifting for the hills, and bad head winds. Some long hills he couldn't maintain speed because he ran out of gear. Unless you are only going to drive around the flatlands. I have found 4:10 to be the best gear especially with these double and triple overdrives. I tell my customers the rear gear is a torque multiplier, the more gear the less work the rest of the drivetrain has to do including shifting. I also hear a lot of ford guys with 3:55 complain about the exhaust brake not being as strong as they think it should be, more gear will help that also. I know you are a ford guy but the best truck for pulling an RV is the dodge cummins 4:10 and that AIR RIDE, you wont have to worry about busting a RV frame with that air ride. I have a customer who is going hot shot and wants a ford and wants me to spec it out for him. You have been helpful on the 450 info.

Make sure to tell KYD to install the Sulastic Springs. They're gonna need them for that F350 back end.

Great video about the difference between both trucks, but how outdated is the video about purchasing and negotiating power . I can't even get/buy an f450 at msrp

I am mainly looking at payload because my camper weighs 4500 lbs. An F450 crew,4x4 King Ranch allows for just 4701 payload. With fuel,cargo,hitch weight (trailer)and camper that's 6k. My ONLY choice is the F350.

F350 vs F450. Maybe F550 with high gvw. Insurance... most car companies will not insure these. They consider these as commercial. Some do. Check first

I have a very different view of mileage between a 355 and 410 gear ratio as far as weight when towing heavy you maybe right but when you are not towing the 410 ratio will drop at least 3 to 5 miles per gallon depending on your heavy foot and or terrain

Funny your the only one Marc will listen to about his truck choice. He's been in denial about his F250 CC Diesel truck being over payload capacity and GVWR towing his TT. He's always adding weight to his rig
