You guys are true professionals!! Watching this video I became ill to the stomach 😩,we just purchased a brand new 2020 GD Reflection 150 29RS fifth wheel and after our first two week shake down camping trip , to my horror I inspected the roof and saw massive bubbles every where! Unacceptable workmanship from Grand Design, the more I inspected our unit I just shook my head in disbelief as the list became longer. Our fingers are crossed that the roof warranty will cover this and that our rv dealership will do the same repair to our trailer as you guys do to the units that roll into your shop! Thanks for the in-depth video on how these factory’s really slap these things together and how you’re professionalism and passion to make things right! 👍👍🇨🇦

They won't do what we do. At best they will replace the roofing. However you can bring it back if it's defective. Winnebago lost a $500,000 lawsuit for defective coach. There is a USC code that stipulates when you buy a product you buy it free from defects. You can Google the winnebago suit and read it Thanks for watching.

Damn.....I use your videos as a warning of what NOT to buy. LOL I rebuilt my roof, with the HUGE assistance from watching your videos. Great job on them and a plethora of knowledge in them. I ran into some of the same things on my 1998 Jayco Eagle that you are running into here. Took me a month to "fix" all of the screw ups they just covered up when they put the roof deck on. One thing on mine, they used one screw on the seam of the deck, which was only 1/8" material, to hold down both edges. Absolutely unbelievable.

You guys Rock! Hats off to you all! I bought a brand new 2018 Keystone Bullet Premier 30RIPR and spent 6 months upgrading and bringing things up to my standards. It kills me how these manufactures build these. Production Production Production ... I have delamination bad on my rear exterior wall and I've heard the won't cover it under warranty because it's cosmetic. I wouldn't take the trailer to just anyone. I don't trust anyone in the RV industry. I live in this full time. I'll repair it myself. I found little tiny holes in the trim and factory silicone sealant. Your videos pointing out all the flaws, seeing how much it bothers you guys and listening to how you have to address everything cause it's the right way to build these. Your honesty and work ethic are truly appreciated by me and anyone that has had to deal with the manufactures and RV sales people after they get your $$$. You guys are a breathe of fresh air! Please keep up the excellent work!!

Great work - roofs done right. I am impressed by the thought you put into the design, heat welded reinforcements/Double seal, thinking about easy removal of components. The problem is these "stick and tin" trailers just shake themselves apart over time. Not to mention any water intrusion and its basically game over - roof seal is really key to avoiding that - you guys are true pros!

Good job! Just saw something at 6:27 that I thought was a small brown hammer laying on the roof. Then I realized it is just a dark piece of the OSB plywood (looks like a hammer, though). Hard to believe that the manufacturer isn't responsible for this repair. If I paid for a new coach and the roof peeled off the same year, I'd be back at the dealer demanding my money back!

I didn't do my entire roof, but I did use grace Vycor peel and stick membrane (same thing we use for residential roofing and for ledger and joist flashing on decks) as my "buffer strips" to protect my TPO when I did a re deck and roof on the ol' 02 forest river I continue to hang on to. I don't think i would do the entire roof. I like a good wooden surface for my adhesive for the TPO to stick to. Just my honest opinion

They campers are all the same. If it's in a local dealer and they do an insurance claim you do not have to authorize them to do the work. You can go anywhere you want to even though they file the claim. I'd you want to bring it here then you can. All they are going to do is put another crappy Dicor roof on it and slobber it with Dicor caulk and then, in the fine print, you will still have to slobber more on every 3 to 4 months. Why they don't put barrier vapour under the insulation just like houses.... I bet those roof get really moldy avec a few years with all that cold/warm air trapped in the roof....have you ever seen barrier vapour??
@RVROOFINSTALL
@RVROOFINSTALL 3 жыл бұрын
Vapor barrier are fastened on the inside in some areas and the outside in some areas. The purpose is to stop the different air temperatures from colliding and causing moisture issues/ condensation. However you would need to know where your coach is predominantly going to be for it to be affective. Coaches are going to get hot anywhere in the summer if they are parked or stored, likewise with cold in the winter. You will never change that. So if the inside builds up heat and humidity you would trap all with the vapor barrier. The plyfoam with Filon coaches do much better than the aluminum sided travel trailers. I have had many comments abut how we installed the insulation incorrectly with the paper up...the paper acting as the barrier...but it doesn't matter all that much because the owners may be in Florida theN Canada. The point is you want the barrier to be on the the side of the humidity. In more humid climates it should be under the siding. In areas where the heat from the house is no ore humid than the outside then the barrier goes under the drywall. Cofusng and contradictive. Thanks for watching.
@MrDerick79
@MrDerick79 3 жыл бұрын
@@RVROOFINSTALL okay.. this why i get confused... i live in Canada... all houses have vapor barrier on the inside.. right after the drywall.... so ... do you think all RV'S in Canada should have vapor barrier under the R-7 insulation or it is just fine with the foil over the insulation???
@RVROOFINSTALL
@RVROOFINSTALL 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrDerick79 foil is a UV deflector. That will cut down on heat intrusion think of it as tanning lotion. I wouldn't be surprised if the Canadian campers had plyfoam on the roof. Plyfoam is polystyrene foam glued to Luan. We have worked on Northern package 5th wheels. All class A B and C campers have plyfoam. Some campers labeled as ..lite....are plyfoam. And some northern package 5th wheels have plyfoam. We use a closed cell foam, when we rebuild, that enhances the ability to retard heat. There is closed cell and open cell foams. Closed cell is tighter much like the big 4x8 sheets you can buy at Home Depot. I nee to ha e a podcast...lol. This is why we say the videos are not DIY...there's a lot to know and how to make things compatible, right?

@RVROOFINSTALL
@RVROOFINSTALL 2 жыл бұрын
From what we have seen of GD they don't glue the roofing memi down well enough and the will blow off. When traveling the wind creates a vortex uplift, not swooshing I er and pressing down. This continual upward pull will cause the roofing to bubble up as you travel. You may have seen a camper roof doing this as you travel. GD has paid us for the claims, but once you get past your 1 year warranty you may be left holding the bag. Check your roof membrane by pressing and rubbing to see if it is loose. The best thing you can hope for is to snag the roof on a tree limb or something, then your insurance will pay for it. In regards to making a mistake....well their all the same. Take the decals off yours and another brand and you wouldn't know who was who. They are all built the same. I would guess they all use the same vendors for materials, cabinets, trusses etc Thanks for watching.

@RVROOFINSTALL

@@mr.peabody3509 we are in Fort Oglethorpe Georgia just a few minutes south of Chattanooga. I'd the roof doesn't leak they may not award a claim. It may leak later.... after the warranty expires, but they don't care. If you tear it....well then the Insurance company will deal with it. Your roof warranty...maybe 12 years I'm guessing. That's in the material itself. Not the installation. You'd have to prove the actual roofing membrane failed abnormally. Now if it blows off while your driving they may step up to cover it. It's a long process. They don't want to pay. So you may have a damaged roof for a couple few months before they opt to cover it...if they opt.

There are a couple of options. All the options are Chemlink products. If you have silicone on the coach clean it out as much as you can. I am not usually an advocate for silicone but nothing will usially stick to silicone...not even silicone. Chemlink makes a product called Metalink andnitnis a commercial grade Silicone designed to stick to finicky finished. It should bond to the silicone, if you have they. They also make M1 which is an adhesive caulk designed to be outside...it's like liquid nails in steroids...great stuff. Super strength for adhering. They make Duralink...very similar to M1 just not as strong as an adhesive. Those are some options for you my friend. You can research them at Chemlink.com. they should have a dealer section for you to locate where to purchase. Thanks for watching.

Is it just me or isn't there an obvious sheen to the OSB that makes sense to what your saying, how can an adhesive (generally speaking) like the roof membrane, stick to that type of glossy-slick finish?
@RVROOFINSTALL
@RVROOFINSTALL 4 жыл бұрын
OSB has a mix of resins in it and one side isa wax so when it is pressed the resin doesn't stick to the press. That is usually the printed side with all the ASTM information which should be face down or inside for the inspector or project manager to see to ensure they have the proper sheathing for that particular project. RV manufacturers put the smooth wax side up because it looks better. The thin material they use will show the OSB texture through the membrane. We re-deck with BC grade plywood most of the time unless the coach is wider than 96 inches. For the wider ones we have to use OSB because lywood isn't readily available in lengths over 96 inches.

No mfg has contacted us to improve their roofs. In regards to the extra it would take...well Jayco has a video on KZbin bragging about how they can build a camper in 7 hours....it takes us a week to do the roof. Corporate america doesn't care about quality. It's all numbers to them. How to get em built, get em out and get em sold, how much cheaper can they build it, how much extra profit, how to satisfy the shareholders. All numbers. That's how it all works. We are a small shop and although we are determined to not let a coach go out until it's done properly, our numbers would not be something a CFO would like to see. So if we sold our company we wouldn't get what we could if we slapped them together and shoved them out. As you can see, we are not about the money. We intentionally demonitized every video on our channel. We don't make a cent off of them. It's annoying to watch a commercial every 6 minutes. We have probably 150 videos on our channel. That could be a few extra bucks for us...but it is not worth it for us to annoy folks by slamming them with ad after ad and basically forcing them to watch the ads. Thanks for watching.

You can't run them perpendicular to the trusses. If you did you'd have a seam in the center. Then you'd have a bouncy in between the trusses at the seams which then would require some sort of ply clio. I have always run sheathing perpendicular to trusses and framing on typical commercial residential framing, but not on RVs. The purpose of the perpendicular position is to stagger the joints on a vertical application for shear strength. Also when you run perpendicular you usually mark you sheathing for the framing so to ensures the frame is running plumb to maintain optimal strength in the truss, rafter stud. On an RV is just 8 feet...the sheathing is butting each other which qualifies the shear factor once glued and fastened. You can not fasten down too thick of sheathing to avoid the bouancy because it would make it unnecessarily heavier. Thanks for watching!

@@lynngatlin4469 I have been many things but I have never been called shoddy. I ha e 3 GC licenses myself. MA, TN and MD. I think I know my way around a set of blue prints as well. There are some that do because that's they way they were shown and they don't know the WHY and there are those that know the WHY they do. I would be inclined to think you are the former. Down south the out footers 2 foot below grade. Up north it's 4 foot. WHY? Because of frost line. Does that mean the southern foundation is not as strong as a northern? So w extra feet of foundation down south would be a waste of money. Years ago they built with 1x stock planks, now we use sheathing. Plywood was the norm and you confess to using OSB which bus far inferior to plywood. Who's shoddy now? You need to understand the design and factors in any project to ensure a quality build within budget. Any more may be a waste. Years ago no one used hurricane clips. Some still try to avoid them. Many think hurricane clips are a waste because they would never hold up to a hurricane...which they won't? So why are they code?? Do you know? Or are you just a do'er?? Maybe you could send me the coefficient factor of the shear and tensile strength comparison of running the sheathing in either direction. Maybe the ASTM may have that for you if you know what ASTM is. If you did you would know that is how codes are out in place. I'd you're going to call me shoddy you'd better have more ammunition in that tinker and prove where I am shoddy. We use the best materiAls available to pull these coaches together to last. Far better than the manufacturer. If you don't like what you see you don't need to watch. As much as I appreciate a good banter. FYI hurricane clips are to minimize collateral damage in the event of a hurricane. The design is to minimze the structure from coming apart and going airborne. The small clips could nearkynstoo a hurricane from tearing the structure apart impart because the clips are too small and the stock is to thin. Are they shoddy clips? No. They compensate the strength by tiny bends which strengthen the metal and the fastening holes are staggered to get optimal bite into the wood and not split the grain. Know the WHYs and you can move that knowledge to other criteria to achieve results. Also....I done went to the bettera funded schools if my state...haw haw! I was even a valor dick torean....

I love how the Indiana RV manufacturers are always pushing "Amish Craftsmanship" This is not a slam against them or the Mennonites which we have several good size community's near me........they're great people..BUT....... They work mostly farming, re-roof jobs, building tear downs. They DO NOT ever work new construction that I have ever seen. I'm a former Deputy and to say at least I spent plenty of time in the rural areas. The Amish and Mennonites are craftsmen when it comes to the furniture building trade BUT never have seen them locally doing new construction.
