The Pilot is a good all rounder. It’s not the best off road, nor gas mileage but they’re great, reliable vehicles. I did like the last generation more with it being boxy, but it’s not terrible. I’m excited to see what happens to the Acura MDX since the Pilot Elite is kind of a better deal right now. I am curious though.. the AWD sounds similar to SH-AWD. Is it the same and his renamed for Honda?

SH-AWD and i-VTM4 are primarily very similar. The main difference is that SH-AWD allows more flexibility around corners when torque is pushed to the rearwheel. The system in i-VTM4 shuts that down. I hope I answered your question correctly.

The VTM-4 system in my 2007 Honda Pilot is awesome off-road! I bet this Pilot would be awesome off-road too with a 2” lift, all terrain tires, and sway bar disconnects.

@@GotterAdventure unfortunately lower gearing is difficult to add yet incredibly important. Even with over a 19:1 first high range ratio I hate the lag feeling and jumpiness of the converter making all the torque.

Anyone considering the 9spd transmission should really drive both 9spd vs 6spd variant. The ZF 9spd transmission is not known for its reliability. It's available in other manufacturers vehicles. No one has ever said the ZF 9spd is best in class.

I owned a 2018 Pilot and had a after market hitch installed, it was so ugly I couldn't live with it so I traded in my Pilot. I bought a 2019 Acura MDX( advance trim level). It was very nice but... For 60k I expected more out of the MDX. There is so many shared parts from the Pilot in the MDX. The MDX was much smaller so the the 3rd row was more just for looks than anybody to include small children being able to have a comfortable ride in the 3rd row. I decided to trade in the MDX and went back to the Pilot. I got a 2019 Pilot (Elite) and I am much happier with the Pilot than the MDX. I can say that the MDX has a sportier and more luxury look to it than the Pilot. If your looking for a smooth ride and capable vehicle for 50k the Pilot Elite is it. Im sure there are other vehicles in that price range that look more sporty and offer more but, Honda owners purchase Honda's for quality and longevity. The Pilot offers a sort of panoramic sunroof ( the MDX doesn't) and comfortable seating for 7 or 8 people. I have the 7 seater with the center counsel in the rear. All and all said if your looking for a full SUV (CUV) the Pilot is worth a look. With all the opinions out there I hope this can help at least one person looking for a vehicle

If that is not enough, the box engines are known for blowing up. Unless you like gutless cars that you and want to spend lots of money on repairs, Subaru's should be avoided.

Well, the Pilot's had that since the 2016 model...which is one reason I got the Pilot over the 2016 Highlander back then, as the Pilot's AWD system was superior to Toyota's (TFL took both to Gold Mine Hill, IIRC). Another was I wanted a slightly roomier interior, AND be able to tow 5000lbs (which the Highlander could do also, as most V6 engine mid-size SUVs can). So far, my Pilot's been fine...none of the issues some 2016 owners have reported as "common problems." None. -- BR

Honda has never put very robust (automatic) transmissions in their vehicles. I would never consider a Honda for towing, particularly with the problematic 9 speed ZF tranny.

So macho looking now! Definitely not the AWD trim Odyssey anymore...no sir.......(is this enough ellipsis to make my point?)........ As far as the hardware, i-VTM-4 isn't a bad on demand 4wd system but remember that 70% torque to the rear wheels means that 30% will never get there, unlike a part time or locked full time system that can send 100% to either axle as needed. It won't matter much until you lift a wheel going up a steep hill where there wont be a lot of weight on the front axle and the rear axle will be tasked with the bulk of the tractive effort. I mean...it's fine for the AWD odyssey trim. To be honest its better than most systems, but anything much more than a family crossover it aint.

I have FWD 5 seat, 4 cyl Highlander. And this is what I wanted. I saved 5K+ by not getting 3rd row, 6cyl and AWD. And I have this car for 9.5 years. And never in life I missed having AWD. When my FWD can't tackle the snow, it must be enough of white stuff to call for snow emergency, so no one allowed on the road. I drove Nissan 240Sx on snow days. This was fun. See, this is not about get going, its about stopping. And no, I don't need to give my car a mud bath.

I think your the minority, but I guess many people want the SUV look I guess, because I don't see a reason for extra ground clearance of the SUV if your using it as you say. Sedona with a 4 cylinder seems like a better fit.

As far as clear thinking goes, I am the minority for sure. How come, my neighbor has 2 AWD SUVs but as soon as any snow starts falling, he puts them into garage and doesn't come out until township cleans the road? Meanwhile, I take my cars to stores, to empty parking lots and do snow donuts, etc. I was at the winter wedding in Boston; by the time we came out from restaurant around 3am, there was a ~10 inches of snow outside. I drove Mercury Villager on that trip and it took me through un-cleaned roads with no issues. At night with no cars I came to hotel faster on the snow than during the day on dry surface.

theodorekell Im in a snow state, Minnesota and truely went from a RWD car as my first, to two FWD cars and now in an AWD car for the past 6+ years. I won't go back to FWD unless I fall on hard times. A RWD, sure for a 6-8 month out of the year vehicle only though. FWD works, but I love just going when the stop light goes green instead of sitting there spinning my FWD tires. I guess if you don't see snow and ice very much FWD is fine. But in my opinion once the vehicle size gets into mid size SUV and minivan territory and you deal with ice and snow AWD is helpful to get going. i kid you not I've driven by people with brand new FWD cars that couldn't make it up a packed snow covered/ice road. Those are our condititions. It's rarely deep snow, just snow that gets packed on the road and crushed into smooth snow/ice. By the way I love doing donuts too in parking lots with my AWD SUV. Glad your happy with your method of transportion and its working out for ya too though.

Finally you came to the truth. Because you started with "Why in the world would you buy this thing with FWD". Think about this - conditions like yours affect RELATIVELY small part of population. If you look at US population density map, you will realize that large territory that requires 4WD is hosting not that many people. My relatives live in Boston and drive nothing but Honda Accord. Look, last December I caught huge snow storm between Boston and Hartford. I passed every car, every AWD, every Subaru. They all took their SUVs and drove 25mph on empty 3-lane hwy. I was going 45 in FWD sedan in 8 inches of snow passing as many cars as possible on the uphills. Then whats the point?
