These cars are simply outstanding. My last 3 cars have all been the ES. The first two were not hybrid. I put 200,000 miles on each of them before selling to a friend and a relative. The one I drive now is the hybrid. It is now 5 years old, and has 84,000 miles on it. Since buying the car I have averaged 34.6 MPG. Have never done anything to any of my 3 ESs, except routine maintenance, tires, and 1 brake job on each of the first 2. Am still on the original brakes on my hybrid model. These cars are very comfortable....Moreover, these cars are RELIABLE.

@stephendibari50104 жыл бұрын
Michael Romines I’m on my first ES, a 2013 ES350. Bought last April at 30,009 miles. It was a trade in to a local Volvo dealership as part of a 2 car trade in deal. (Why anyone would trade in a Lexus IS beyond me). I don’t drive more than 6-8 k miles/yr and sure enough I just turned 36k miles. This is car is flawless, solid like a tank and quiet like a vault. I have done nothing to it yet except rotate the tires and replace 1 tire Pressure sensor. My only complaint is the rear seats don’t fold down. I have 4 1/2 years left on my used car loan, this baby will last me 10+ years! In ECO mode and highway cruising I can easily hit 40 mpg (my dash graph shows it).

Alex does such a great job of reviewing vehicles - the best in my opinion. Its just too bad he doesn't consider reliability of the brand or model because there is NO way you can compare a Kia Cadenza to a Lexus ES. After all, when all is said and done the vehicle's primary purpose is transportation and if it isn't reliable that defeats the whole purpose.

Hybrid fan here, stretched for this car a yer ago, after 9000 miles great decision! Top off my tank for accurate mileage, low to mid 30's around town, high 30's to low 40's EZ freeway driving (60-65 MPH). I like not having to go to the pump as often, even with Lexus sneaking in a smaller gas tank (13 vs 16 gallons) for hybrid vs gas only, get another 100 miles/tank range, high 400 vs high 300.

Great Job Alex, thank you for talking about the advantages of Nimh batteries, most other reviewers don't know anything about things like that. You should also mention the advantages of port injection / combined injection (both port and direct combined) vs direct injection, that's another huge advantage of the Lexus. Direct injection engines (all competitors use them) suffer from internal carbon build up due to their design and when they get older that causes extremely expensive problems. Their injectors are fragile and expensive too. Plus their emissions are much more harmful to humans.

KOLT They do it as a marketing strategy. Safety is a top concern for most new car buyers at all price ranges, and buyers like not having to buy top trim levels in order to get all available safety components. There’s no reason to think that safety systems from manufacturers that choose to make them optional would work any less well because they don’t offer them on all trims. For example, the 3rd gen EyeSight system from Subaru is the same last year as it is this year, even though that for this year, Subaru makes it standard on all trims.

Another stellar review, Alex! After owning a Lexus ES-300 for 20 years of comfortable, trouble-free driving, I ordered its cousin: a 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited Hybrid. In my opinion, compared to the 2019 ES 300, the 2019 Avalon has a more luxurious interior (the available Cognac leather trim is absolutely stunning,) a more logical and easier to navigate infotainment system, and fold-down rear seats, to name a few differences. And the Avalon’s hybrid versions are only $1,000 more than their non-hybrid counterparts. However, most would argue (as does Alex) that the Avalon's grill is rather polarizing than the Lexus's. But beyond that, I believe the Avalon is a solid alternative to the ES 399 for those seeking a luxury sedan without a luxury logo.

Has anyone here sat down and done the numbers? The engineer in me sat down and went through the calculations. I don’t see how it is economically viable to own a hybrid when petrol versions are good. It doesn’t make sense to own this hybrid for those low mileage drivers. I can only really see the guy who drives 18,000 miles per year and the hybrid system miraculously having NO computer/electronic/mechanical breakdowns over ten total years (the last 8 yrs outside the basic warranty and last 6.66 yrs outside the power train warranty at 18,000 miles per year) as the one who can conceivably benefit from owning a hybrid. Alex said the ES300h is $3k more than the comparable ES350. Assuming the national average of fuel is $2.50 per gallon, the combined fuel economy of the ES300h is 44 mpg and of the ES350 is 26 mpg. Assuming I own this hybrid for 10 years, at 8k mi, 10k mi, 12k mi, 15k mi, and 18k mi, I get a 10-year long savings of respectively $147.90, $932.24, $1,718.18, $2,902.97, and $4078.31. This only makes sense for those who drive 15k miles per year or 18k miles per year. But the plot twist is that at those mileages I will go through the basic warranty/powertrain warranties in respectively 2.4 yrs/4 yrs and 2 yrs/3.3 yrs. Lexus hybrid vehicles are not as bulletproof as the petrol versions. If over those years the repair costs exceed the savings in fuel, it is a wash! If there are no breakdowns, let me ask you: is $2,902.97 or $290.29 per year or $4,078.31 or $407.83 per year in fuel savings a big deal? For me, the former is not, but the latter might be but only a little, again assuming it never breaks down. Because my family and I usually buy extended service contracts, the savings immediately halve for the peace-of-mind.
@Artecus4 жыл бұрын
And now that fuel prices dropped to $1.36 in my area, the savings are even lower!
@tonysterbenc Жыл бұрын
3 years later, but I don't think the ES hybrid ended up being priced $3k higher than the gas version after all. $1k, I think. Also, assuming rock-solid reliability from a Lexus hybrid for 10 years really isn't that outlandish; I picked up a used Prius that did so in its first decade, and based on Consumer Reports and other survey numbers, it appears many do. There are also hidden savings in hybrid ownership, like not needing to replace brake pads for about 100k because the regenerative braking spares the pads.

With the battery under the rear seat, I don't understand why Lexus doesn't design the seat backs to fold down. My best friend owns an ES and he's always needing to borrow my truck to pick up stuff at Lowe's!
