Even if you think bigger is better, these three pickups may be all the truck you'll ever need.
Big trucks are exactly that, and many drivers don’t need something with as much bulk as a full-size pickup. So, we corralled the Big Three of the midsize trucks - the 2019 Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma - to sort out which might best suit those who don’t need or want a full-sizer. We would have loved to include the new Jeep Gladiator, which is going to be a serious contender when it arrives, but we were just a little too early for its release. We’ll throw it into the mix another time.
To be sure, all three of these midsize trucks are seriously capable, close enough to their bigger siblings that they’ll be enough truck for many, many buyers. Plus they’re easier to park, drive, and manoeuvre around town and off road. Each is able to tow in excess of 6,000 pounds, carry more than 1,100 pounds, and traverse the kind of rough ground few SUVs will dare to tread.
That said, each truck has its own unique strengths and one stands taller than the rest. After a day of driving each truck over the same route through a muddy and rutted forest, and after many more kilometres on asphalt, this is what we found.

And also what I got from the review was that the other two trucks were cheaper, had better gas mileage, more comfortable, and have more towing and payload, but instead chose the Tacoma, because it's "trucky". Lol okay....

The lady was ok but the guy lost credibility when he knocked the canyon for having the worst fuel economy at 12L/100km. Then later he says the Tacoma gets 13 and then says thats not bad. He also knocked the canyons interior but it's actually the freshest of the group. The Tacoma dates back & FYI the Ranger has been around for a while in other parts of the world. So those are older.

I'm a long time Toyota guy and I bought a 2018 Canyon. I love it. I didn't buy it for off roading capability, more practicality and price for options. I got a better deal on the Canyon. yeah same here, i'm not buying a car yet but when and if I do, i'm thinking of something AWD like a GMC Canyon, or a Ford Ranger even though i've always been a Japanese, British, and German car person, cause they both rank as the 2 best mid size pickups, and I live in Maryland right now, but plan to move to Colorado or New Hampshire sometime in the future, but not for a while though till i'm ready lol, and I know you need something AWD in both states, also my parents have mostly owned Japanese cars, and we haven't owned any American cars in a while lol since 2002 or so when my Dad sold his 2-door 1991 Explorer

The tacoma gets way better once you drive it. It becomes way more responsive as it learns your driving patterns. Still it's not very powerful and it will always lag a bit here and there. But it does get way better. I know because I have 2 of them and when I lifted my second one the damn thing was lagging like crazy, but eventually it learned amd now it drives just like my other lifted tacoma.

I assume the Canyon gets the same MPG as the Colorado and my ZR1 Colorado 4X4 V6 gets over 25 mpg / 11KM/L on the highway if you keep it around 62-63 MPH / 100 KMH. The Tacoma can't squeeze more than 22 mpg at best so I'm not sure what kind of magical trucks they are selling in Canada. The Tacoma is a little better if you intend to go rock crawling, but the Ford and GM trucks are more comfortable if you are over 5'10". Here in the US the Ranger is overpriced right now because of demand, and you can get a 4X4 Canyon or Colorado for almost $10000 less than a TRD Pro if you shop at the right time of the year and month. If you want a Tacoma, get the SR5 with 4WD. Other than crawl control, most of the stuff on TRD Tacos like stiff shocks and a skid plate doesnt improve its performance anywhere near the cost it adds. Nobody with a $45,000 truck is going to want to scratch up the nose and bottom of it by sliding over rocks and jumping bumps like Ivan Stewart.

Dude half the Information was incorrect. Your looking past so much stuff, the ranger has a terrible back seat when it folds down and also throws the 4WD system to 4Lo automatically at any given time. Turbo 4 cylinder sure works great until you need the torque right away and can tow the most sure but will only last 70k miles and interior looks like a Ford Fusion. The Tacoma of course it’s the best in off roading but you guys are reviewing TRUCKS not jeeps and for 56k I wouldn’t buy a “Truck” that only tows 3k pounds might as well be a car so the Tacoma doesn’t perform like a real truck! Canyon I think is the winner has the best interior and safety features that you guys looked passed and even has a electronic diff locker and actually performs like a truck not a Jeep and is the biggest cab. Terrible review
@yamajammer76
@yamajammer76 5 жыл бұрын
nicholas lee I own a 2019 Ranger FX4 for the past 2 1/2 months. What do you mean about the 4WD system throwing automatically into 4 Lo at any given time? You can’t shift into or out of 4 Lo without stopping and putting the transmission into neutral. It’s locked in for good until you stop and repeat the process. Where is your data that supports the statement that the engine will only last 70k miles? That sounds like a made up number. I find the interior to be fairly modern looking, comfortable and ergonomically designed. The back seat should be a 40/60 split and should fold flat so I would agree with that criticism.
@yamajammer76
@yamajammer76 5 жыл бұрын
@@nicholaslee3281 500 recalls already? Again you're just throwing out numbers. I believe the Ranger has had 2 minor recalls and a couple TSBs so far. It was also just named the top midsized truck for initial quality in a JD Power survey. Go look it up. You can agree or not, but that's solid data to back up my claim. I have no idea how long the engine will last, however a lot of that depends on how well it is maintained. I have a friend that works at a Toyota dealer and some of the stuff he'll snap me sometimes is crazy. You ever saw washer fluid in a master cylinder reservoir? I've had him snap me that. I've also seen what an oil pan looks like when you never change your oil. The EcoBoost 2.3 has a pretty decent reputation with people pushing them reliably well over their limit in the Mustang. I think in stock form it will do fine with proper maintenance. Yes at some point you could lose a turbo, but that doesn't stop people from buying turbo diesels does it? Interior wise there is little difference in material quality between all of these tested trucks. GM historically puts out some of the worst interiors. The Canyon looks nice inside and for the segment they did well. I have nothing against the Colorado/Canyon twins. They are probably my favorite new GM vehicle. As far as being biased I've always had good service from my Fords with good maintenance. I'm just debating because your making up stuff to claim the GM twins are superior. To be honest they are both pretty similar vehicles in both size and capability. The Ranger is slightly trimmer and that might account for a slightly smaller cab, but the difference is very little.
@nicholaslee3281
@nicholaslee3281 5 жыл бұрын
@yamajammer76 yeah I suppose your right. Obviously I was throwing numbers out. Diesels run at a much cooler rate though making them last extremely longer. I just think these two folks are not the people to be reviewing trucks. I do hope ford comes out with more all terrain models and possibly a diesel motor to put in the ranger. I just think these people do not know what they are even looking for and paying attention to very small things. Only thing that bother me about the ranger is the cab size being a little short and the rear view mirror adjustment is on the dash so that’s a little odd and the screen size even in the high end model like the lariat is so small not worth the money.
@yamajammer76
@yamajammer76 5 жыл бұрын
@@nicholaslee3281 Yeah the mirror adjustment location is different for sure, but works ok. The touchscreen is a bit small, but I don't think it's much smaller then the competition in this segment. I'm torn on touchscreen size, because I'm also not wild about a 12" iPad being thrown on the dash like some are going to. I also don't agree with the Tacoma winning this. I'm 6'1 and I don't fit very well in them. Seating position alone in the Tacoma makes it a no go for me. I don't know how many miles you've driven a Ranger, but I can say after 2 months and 1,700 miles I have no regrets in getting it. I've had a lot of different vehicles from F150s to Explorers and this is by far my favorite one so far.

One thing about the ford that everyone loves is the price and you can’t beat it for that. I paid 45k for my canyon I have zero issues and 5600 miles on it but who’s to say once that 100k hits. But I definitely agree on the Tacoma not being the winner just because of off road capability. If I bought a truck it’s so I can tow and put stuff in the back not be rock crawling. Plus the cab is so much smaller in the Tacoma like I just don’t get how they picked it. Yes resale value is higher but that’s why you pay way more up front and people look past that.

I bought a Colorado. Why? It works in real life. Typically, Toyota interest rates are way higher and the price is also slightly higher and typically less negotiable as Toyota has made being in "slightly short" supply an art. The long and short of that is to expect to pay at least $100 a month more for an equally equipped Tacoma vs Colorado/Canyon. Also real world, I want to keep my truck a long, long time and not be rebuilding turbos. I don't care how much you tell me that the turbos are more reliable now, they're still going to fail and need replacement. And that's expensive. Nope, naturally aspirated for my truck. I'm also over 6 feet tall so I won't be sitting with my ass on the floor and my head hitting the roof because a Tacoma looks sportier. Love my Colorado so far. 👌

Ford turbo engines are actually super reliable. Look up high mileage f150s and there's plenty with close to 200k miles with all original engine turbo and transmission. Chevy is actually the least reliable vehicle. Look up what happened to the last colorados. Lightly used raptor? No way in hell. But yes 56k is a lot of money for a midsize but you get what you pay for. The suspension is super expensive and you get a the goodies in the trd pro. If that's what you are looking for then it's a good value. The raptors go for at least 70k new. That's 20k over the trd pro in a realistic situation.

It actually is if you like good suspension. If you don't care about suspension then other models will be fine and they're similarly priced to the competition.

Lol. I busted my rear bumper covers Off roading and my truck was full of scratches 2 weeks after buying it. That's what trucks are for.

Fuck that I dont buy a truck for fuel economy if i fuel economy buy a car. Ive own full size and i hate when people say i get it because it has the best fuel economy. Ive always bought v8 or ecoboost i want power over fuel economy

Canyon interior is Fisher-Price. Taco Snorkel also brings in *cooler* air which can't hurt.. Taco resale can't be denied. 2020 version, even though it has a limited number of new features, that adjustable seat (FINALLY!) makes such a difference from previous models. The other reason I'm a Taco guy for these models is that backseat. Ford and GMC folding back seat are horrible imo compared to the Taco, but to each their own!

I love the Taco to I’ve had several over the years. But the interior is just to cramped for anyone over 6ft .

@@thomasb1813 average height for Americans is 5'9 if I remember correctly. I'm 511 and fit just fine. Also I bought my tacoma from a guy that was 6'3 and he loved it. He had it for 5 years
