I wanted to give you an honest review of my 2-year-old XC40 to give you my honest opinion on this car after 2 years of ownership. Hopefully, this helps give you a different perspective from most car reviews as it's a genuine user/owner review based on my experience with the car.
The Volvo XC40 is a fantastic small SUV / medium suv / compact SUV that stands out from the pack in terms of style and build quality.
This is my first car review so please be kind, I have got some new equipment for this and it was the first use for most of it so these things will get better with time. It's standard spec other than paint, apple car play, electronic child locks, wireless phone charging and privacy glass in the rear. It's not a quick car by any means and nor does it have sporty handling but it's got all the power you possibly need in an everyday driver on UK roads. It's great on the motorway too. This is quite a long road test condensed into a short video review which I really hope you'll find interesting.

My MG HS has just gone in for repair. Left in a car park to do some shopping, came back and the guy parked next to us pulled his car out ( a Volvo xc40 somehow managed to rag the side of his car across my front bumper! ). Anyhow, we have got a 73 plate Volvo XC40 as a courtesy car. Great car to drive. Beautiful gear box. Really comfortable drive. But really thirsty around the town. Going to Birmingham tomorrow so hopefully it’s more economical on a good run out. But that aside. Impressive car.

Hi Jim. I thought that was excellent. You clearly went to considerable trouble in terms of multiple cameras/angles and I would certainly enjoy more of the same from time to time. I guess the quality will improve over time too but the "right" equipment will take a while to acquire. Ordered my 2nd XC40 as I enjoyed my R-Design Pro so much. I’m hoping the infotainment run by Google in the 2023 models are is going to be a vast improvement as like you I found it to be the one small thing that lets the car down.

I have the exact same 2019 D3 inscription, same color. I just LOVE it ! haven't had any problems with it at all, you can drive it for hours without getting tired (pilot assist work really well) . Only thing i don't like is exactly what you said : the gear selector is a nightmare. I have no idea why they stepped away from a moveable stick ..

The double click thing is very weird too, why you can’t just press it once is beyond me

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I realise it's an old comment/video but the reason for the double press is because it isn't moveable and doesn't lock into place, and they didn't want people accidentally changing gear when they were putting their phone in the storage or putting something in the cup holder, etc. where an accidental nudge might happen.

@@rubberduck3788 yes mate, others solve the issue with software so that you can only change at 0mph with your foot in the brake - I think that would have been a better solution but it’s fine how it is, just not ideal IMHO.

I searched on KZbin for ‘Ann Summers party’ and was presented with this video of the gear knob. Oh the disappointment 😬 Great video though. The Volvo looks like a pretty decent car which gives your German premium brands a good run for its money. Like you said though a shame that the infotainment system isn’t slightly better and one where the German cars will always have an edge.

I have a 2020 XC 40 inscription. I couldn’t agree more about the ridiculous gear lever. I live in the city where I do a lot of parallel parking and in and out of tight spots. The double tap gear lever is nothing short of annoying and so unnecessary.

It was optional on mine but may be standard these days. Unfortunately it doesn’t use the whole screen, just a small area of it.

44MPG on a motorway run sounds poor. My V90 D4 Inscription Pro give 48 or so on a motorway run, and its much bigger. Does the SUV body wreck the aerodynamics that much?

I guess it does, it’s not the most aerodynamic looking thing is it? I guess the smaller power output means the engine is working a bit harder at motorway speeds too.

My 2002 V70 d5 with 220,000 miles still gets 70 mpg on motorway runs. I say for a modern car you're mpg is poor

If you own a #Volvo that already has a broken clutch, hydraulic thrust bearing, clutch plates, flywheel and starter motor after 49000 km, can you speak of an inferior quality? The repair by the Spanish Volvo dealer took 20 days and was almost twice as expensive as in NL. They call it legal fraud.

But this has big electrical problem, my in one year 3 betries replaced by dealer visited 11 times to dealer , substandard Volvo vehicles coming for sell in India , don’t buy

Thanks Jim, informative as always with a great down-to-earth review. I always find myself less involved and taking less care of it, when it is a works car, than one I've invested time, effort and money to own myself; I just can't replicate the 'feeling'! I winter drive across Northern Europe where I find Volvo and the XC40 does handle well (Correct Tyres!). It keeps you isolated from the cold outside and is reliable, while newish! Though, I would out of choice, chose another manufacturer if purchasing for myself, at this entry point level of vehicle. All vehicle manufacturers are struggling with driver/passenger interaction alongside the new technology, with regards what the consumer wants. I would love to know who the manufacturers interview or survey, when gaining feed-back, with regards to what they then decide to introduce into their new vehicles! They appear not to be following KZbin reviews, where the theme of physical buttons connected with new technology, while keeping with simplistic driver/passenger interactions for operating the systems, is well reported. The Volvo gear select leaver, is just one example of the generally perceived misdirection of most manufacturers, by their customer base! Or maybe, it is designed for the future generations growing-up into these cars, that have a playstation interaction base background that are able to operate the new systems far easier than current middle or older generation are able too!

I honestly think it's a mix of marketing teams & designers having way too much influence over the end products of cars. If they really want to know what we as customers want, just ask us instead of creating mood boards and studying trends in other markets. I sometimes feel like I must either be a genius or a complete iodit - there are many good arguments for both!!!
