After spending 2 weeks with the new 900XR let's see if I can find any "nitpicks" on BMW's new middleweight Adventure Sport bike. Short answer is not really, after bring this back to the dealer, I put in an order for one...simple.
I would like to thank Motorsport Burgdorf for giving me this bike so that I was able to get to know the bike and give you guys an in depth review. Fancy filming on the road, really clear review. Love this pro testing over time as it also confirms the choice of bike for my wife. As late to market as the 2020 S 1000 XR is, I might steal hers away now and then (second seat, highest over lowest) and wait for the 2021 S, likely having adapted cruise and better colors.

Scott I’m enjoying your reviews/updates on this XR! I’m almost ready to pull the trigger here in Australia as they’re arriving soon. About my only hesitation is the same as yourself. Yep the non adjustable front forks. My S1000R obviously has it & it is great to have. I’ve read/seen other reviewers can the power, but I’ve got a Husky Nuda 900, a couple of boxers& I LOVE the torque!!! Outright power doesn’t make a bike. Yes I’ve owned the S1000RR & that was nuts!🤪 Anyway I’ll wait & see...🤔👍🏼😎

Great review as always Scott, greetings from Vienna! Can you say anything about fuel consumption/range? Only heard the numbers of the presentation in Spain, but I don't know if the numbers of the journalists there (up to 7 litres/100 km) should be taken as realistic...;-)
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Wolfgang, greetings from Germany! I did 589km on it and I was getting around 5 L /100km, now that should improve after the break in period is over. Yea, journalists are really pushing the bikes to their limits, so fuel econ always depends on how you ride. I can see that if you ride it like a "normal" person, you can get 4.2l/100km. Take care, Scott

Thank you Eric, Well, two reasons, first - the XR just fit me, I sat on it and I said "yes" this is it. Second - I'm not going to do off-road, it's really that simple. The bikes are actually very close when compared to each other on paper but when you ride them they are very different animals. Another great review. I'm being thick here, but why / how is the boom invisible in those opening shots when it's between the bike and the camera?
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Short answer is 190° lens on each side of the 360 camera and the software stitches together each side of the 190 lens together down to 180 each totaling 360, basically editing out the boom, magic :) It really increases my time in post production but the shot is awesome and it's worth every extra second spent on it imho. A lot of "one man shows" like my channel won't spend the time but I think it's worth it in the end.

Excellent reviews, I really enjoy listening to your experiences with the different models. I am torn between the 900R and 900XR. I am short 167cm and not keen on lowering the motorcycle. I am currently riding a 2017 HD Streetglide Special but finding town riding very uncomfortable and it is very heavy therefore I’m considering trading it for one of the two …any advice would be appreciated
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Alastair, Well, you might want to consider the low seat option for both of these bikes. There are 3 seats for both, (about an inch up or down from the stock seat) low, normal, high/comfort. the low is 31.1in (790mm) on the 900R and 31.3in (795mm) on the 900XR. So they do go quite low without lowering the suspension. My wife is 164cm and she could touch with the balls of her feet with the lower seat option on the 900R but she said that she'd want to go lower it even more with the lowering kit to 770mm to feel comfortable with it...if we were to get it for her. But it really depends on your inseam, she has longer legs for her height so for you it may be different. See if you can find one with the low seat option...I know that might be hard to do...and sit on it and see if you can do it with out lowering the suspension. Good luck, Scott

I was really sure in getting the r1200/1250gs, now I’m confused. Roberto Ramon or a lightly used low mileage r1200gs would be same cost as new 900xr. It’s a dilemma but I’d go for the bigger more refined used 1200gs on the other hand the 900xr is lighter, more nimble and flick able. You better buy both!

Looks like you really enjoyed this bike, if price was not a factor, would you pick the 900xr over the 1000xr for solo sport touring ? Thx.
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 1000 is just to edgy for touring, it's great for sport. Put simply, the 1000 is sport (evolved from S1000R & RR) with some touring comforts added on afterwards and the 900 was made from the beginning as a middleweight sport/tour. The problem with most sport/tour bikes is that they will lean towards sport or towards touring. So you always had to pick based on what you will do, more sport or more touring, now with this bike, you don't have to pick between the two, it does both very well, almost a perfect balance between sport and touring. Sorry, so long story short, I'd take the 900XR over the 1000XR. 👍😁
@max77ekb
@max77ekb 4 жыл бұрын
As an S1000XR owner I can confirm the statements above. Last year I had a trip of about 2000km on it, and yes, it's overpowered for touring. The suspension is pretty stiff. Plus, according to the measurements, the 900XR should be much more usable in the city. As for 'fun factor'... yes, the 1000 is super fast but it realises its potential at speeds that are well above legal limits ;-) The 0-100 difference between the two is just 0.3 seconds so you would hardly notice that. So, I'm selling my 1000 and will either pick a 900XR or a new Tiger 900 RallyPro if I decide to go for some off-road biased travels :-)

Test driving at Daytona Bike week this weekend, hope I can get over the “made in China”. Love the looks and the sound, would ether have a twin than the inline 4 on the 1000
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Well, since globalization of manufacturing processes, which has been since around the late 1990's, every motorcycle, car, boat, lawn equipment...etc. will have some assembly/s that are actually assembled in China. You are just not aware of how many assemblies are in your car right now. Now what you are complaining about, I'm assuming is that the engine is assembled in China and then sent to Berlin, Germany where the entire bike is assembled. So the question becomes, where do you draw the line as to how big of an assembly is ok or not ok? So please be careful with the above blanket statement of "made in China". Practically every thing you buy today has parts that are either made in China or parts of it made in China. It's just that the OEM's are getting very good at hiding that fact from us. If you think that you have 50% of the parts in your car coming from the Western countries, you are sadly mistaken. Because I worked in the American automotive industry for over 20 years (in logistics), specifically 10 years for Ford Motor Company in Michigan and I know for a fact that we are lucky to get a Ford that has more than 50% of the parts made in "the west" or 1st world countries, little alone in the U.S. Ok, I'm done rambling on now. 😁

F900 XR fits like a glove for me but I'm also in favor of the Boxer engine with the extra torque. Shall I spend the extra 3k? :) ... no, I don't want to become a GS owner. But perhaps a 1250 R rider... hmmm... Scott ... any recommendation from your side? You rode them both .. :)
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
These are two different bikes but both have a laid back riding style. The R is a roadster, no wind protection but you can add an after market wind screen that is a good size, enough to protect for weekend trips and the occasional highway riding. The XR is sport/touring, it can do everything well, so it really depends on what you want, classic roadster or sport/tour? You'd be happy with either one.

Hi Scott, I managed to take a F 900 XR for a quick test ride on the weekend. Loved it! Except for towards the end of my ride when I chucked it down a couple of gears to get round a tight bend at speed... In second gear at approx 6,000 RPM the vibrations were the worst I’ve felt through the foot pegs on any bike I’ve ever ridden. (Before that I’d been changing up around the 5k mark.) Have you experienced a similar phenomenon or your bike?
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, almost any twin will do this, just take it to 8k, and your teeth will fall out LOL! There is a huge difference between the 2cyls and 3/4cyls, you just can't compare a twin to them, even the BMW K1600 is an inline 6cyl it's so smooth everywhere. But to be honest with you, I really live between 3-6k any way, it is very rare when I go above 6k so I really notice it, even after putting 7,000 km on the bike. Ride safe, Scott

@@samiam5326 Yea, the Japanese 90° V-twins are very smooth, they've had many years/decades to make them that way. So coming off one of those is always going to be an adjustment. I just rode the new 1050XT on Monday and the video of it will come out this weekend. The motor was just so smooth, I couldn't believe it, for a liter v-twin. NothingToProve can’t wait to see your video on the 1050 and to hear your thoughts on it. (I’m still trying to find a review that covers the working parameters of the cruise control on the XT version. No one mentions what is the minimum gear and speed for the cruise control to be activated... That was something that really impressed me with the F 900 XR. Cruise control could be activated in first gear at 18kph! 23 kph in second gear.... In the car I mostly use the cruise control in 40 kph ‘school zones’... As well as on the motorway. The 1050 gets to Australia on 13 August. I’ve got it down to three bikes. Suzuki V-Strom 1050, Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX or the BMW F900 XR. Stay safe. 😊

@@samiam5326 A lot of OEMs will only activate the cruise control in 4th gear + and around 40 kmh. I didn't try it with the 1050XT, so I don't know 😒 All three of those bikes are great bikes, you'll be happy with any one of them. Hi scott I have a 2019 S 1000r sport as my main go to bike , but I was thinking of trading for xr next year or similar , the s1000r has been really reliable but if I’m honest I don’t use the top speed much on it , my speeds rarely go above 200 kmh , I’m happy enough riding around the 140/160 mark mostly , I’m just wondering if I bought one of these would I feel underwhelmed or is the low down grunt of the twin pretty fast as in 0 to 120 kmh , the dealer is giving me just € 11,500 against a gs or s1000xr but after watching videos of the f900xr they have grabbed my interest & I’d like to know more about them as u seem to like them , thanks for any info cheers from Ireland

Oh, so you're thinking about doing the same thing that I did 😁 traded in my 1290SDR for this. First: you will notice the power difference Second: you will notice the handling difference Third: you will notice the wind protection difference (low wind noise) Forth: you will notice the comfort difference Fifth: you will notice the ability to ride longer and longer on the XR without any issues 😁 Sixth: you will notice and realize that you are getting older and don't need all that power and performance any more 😒😢😊 and comfort, quiet, easy upright riding is where it's at!

Really growing to like your delivery, man I feel chilled after watching one. As for this bike, had I not got the Tracer 900GT recently I would be tempted and being a BMW car fanboy, I am still tempted. However, short stubby rear affords no protection and a dirty and soaked back and bum. I am surprised you didn't mention it? Aesthetically, the long tank side profile, ant-like front and pannier loops spoil it for me. But the real problem is the twin, I have never ridden a twin I like - Give me a triple any day.
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bob, No, I was not wet on the back/bum when in the rain, in fact it was quite the opposite, I was nice and dry with the wind protection, the main rain drops hitting the out side of my arms and shoulders and only secondary drops on my helmet and rest of body. I was rather comfortable in the rain, as you can see in the video. And the 360° camera that I was using is not water proof, not even water resistant and I just left it attached to the handle bar and just kept recording, the camera only got one or two drops on it and that was it. Keep your 900GT, it's a great bike, it really just comes down to a matter of preference because both bikes do everything very well in the middleweight category. 👍

I think I like the R better, but I don't have any real explanation. The XR should be the better touring bike, the gastank is bigger, the ergonomics are better for touring and the wind protection should be better too. Maybe she suffers a bit of her big sister, which is actually a good bike, but way too demanding and the sound is not for me either. From your comments it sounds as if the F900XR hits that rare sweet spot of giving equal balance to both touring and sport? John McLeod I and wondering same between RT (I’ve done short ride) and XR. Obviously XR is lighter and more nimble/flickable great on twisties and would be ok for long distance touring. Whereas RT is best touring with ultimate wind protection, carrying capacity and heavier weight is an advantage on interstate but less good on twisties. Both would be ideal!
@Pisceanboi
@Pisceanboi 4 жыл бұрын
@@oldtimer3824 Agree on all points. I daresay the RT is probably the better, or at least better featured bike overall, re your above points, and also low maintenance shaft drive, and the no dive, ESA front and rear, Telelever suspension. What puts me off though as a mature, returning rider, is the weight - not so much in riding perhaps, but just managing it on and off the stand, manoeuvring it around the garage, and horror of horrors should you drop it and try to pick it up solo. Oh, and there's also price; the XR is approachable, whereas the RT is up with a luxury car re RRP new.

In my experience of watching these you tube reviews no one, that is NO ONE, has ever changed the suspension when they've had the opportunity to do so. The fact that the front forks on the BMW are non-adjustable is of 0 importance. Bikers like trick looking kit with millimetre gradations. The problem is, quite correctly, they're too scared to do anything that might completely ruin a perfectly satisfactory ride. Unless you're on track with a team behind you, forget it. On the road it's not worth the stress. The back stuff is fine, if you ride with luggage and a pillion - very sensible. PS Good bike. The naked is better for me. Leaning forward, even slightly, is far more engaging.
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
I actually have changed the front suspension manually and electronically in several videos, especially the electronic ones, simply because it is fast and easy to change. I just don't always talk about it when I do adjust it (simply because it's boring and I edit it out). I did talk about it on the Africa Twin 1100, 1250RS, GS, RT, 1290 GT & SAS oh that's all I can remember off the top of my head right now... I would not adjust the F900R, because it was so good, but I would the F900XR...if I could...especially if it had pre-load and I would stiffen up the compression.
