They are? You think of a Mustang as a 5.0 GT. The Shelby GT500 is light years away from the regular Mustang GT. The GT500 has moved the needle from Sports car to Supercar. GM has never announced how much they invested in developing the new C8 and it's been reported the car had frame issues causing manufacturing delays. It's also obvious you're not going to find a C8 under $60,000 setting on a dealers lot. They have to be losing money at that preproduction attention getting price. After visiting my GM dealership. I found that ordering a basic performance model was $75,000+ which included no set delivery date. At the time they used C7 pricing to get a basic price. How can Motor Trend name the C8 Car of the Year? Where are they, the C8s? Certainly not on dealer lots or being driven by new owners. Ford used the proven GT350R and revamped it top to bottom while adding the basically same engine used in the Cobra Jet Mustang giving it the ability to visit the drag strip and the aerodynamics to lap your local road course. Both cars are exceptional, but a car that's still waiting to hit the streets shouldn't be named Car of the Year. The Shelby GT500 is on the streets and is proving it's a fantastic Mustang that for some reason was completely overlooked as Motor Trends Car of the Year. I've owned a C3 and C5, but I'm going with the GT500.

So if that's the "proven" gt350 platform you speak of then cool story.

Or am i missing something, anyway for the price it's pretty much worth it, if you are a complete Track racer, if you wanna be competitive on the track and the drag strip then the base model will give everyone a run for their money, let alone when people start tuning them, i mean, just get a track pack with the removed seats and carbon fiber bits and pieces, and remove the wing and things that create to much downforce and drag, add some slicks on those carbon fiber wheels or just normal light slicks and add some race fuel etc etc. and see that thing launch into the next dimension.

I guess because the viper isn’t currently in production and Chevy doesn’t have a Z06 or ZR1 variant to compare with the Ford GT yet. With the lower price point and amount of technology the base C8 has, its more than likely going to be compared to the higher end mustangs and challengers. While the Z06 and ZR1 will be compared to higher priced super cars like the Viper and Ford GT. This is how it’s always been.

Sorry but I’m my opinion there’s no comparison the C8 Corvette takes the cake, better handling, better braking, better aerodynamics, better looks. The mustang may take it in HP but not the C8 Z06. A better comparison to the mustang would be the ZL1 Camaro. Also the C8 HTC looks way more exotic. The C8 Z06 will be a world game changer.

Who the hell cares how they stack up to each other. Compare the Mustang to the Camaro, that's its competition going all the way back to the 1960s. Compare the new Corvette to what it was redesigned to take on, the mid-engine Exotics of Europe. I just put a deposit to get in line for a C8 Z06....I tracked the GT500 in Vegas a few months ago and it was a really tough decision. I currently have a 17 GT350 so I’m not sure they’ll play nicely under the same roof.

The base GT500 tested was 80K and C8 was 88K , the GT500 was more than 1 second faster and Carbon fiber track package was 4/1-2 seconds faster.... so imho Ford did a great job , C8 is mid engine design and 600 pounds lighter than GT500

It's a good comparison, they are totally different cars, but matched price-wise. It is obvious that 700bhp C8 will win with Mustang on track. The point of this comparison is to show that you need 150% power in FR layout muscle/sports car to keep up with RR layout supercar.

they each bring something unique to the table, i am a huge corvette lover, but the new GT500 is an absolute beauty. one of the very best looking mustangs ever, and this includes my favorites from '67-'71. it all comes down to what each of us enjoys. the GT500 is quicker, and should be as it's the top of the line mustang and the new C8 is the entry level. but i would have to say that i would love to own the GT500, and that coming from me is a huge compliment. thanks for this video.

Not to argue but it's not just a Mustang...it's a Shelby! Plus Corvettes need someone beat up on. Ford GT is not in the wheelhouse currently. The last model was not meant to compete against Corvettes but for a race that lasted 24 hours. They won btw. Maybe Ford will surprise us and put the v8 back in the Ford GT. Although Ford GT is much pricier. Ford just doesn't have anything to compete with the Corvettes besides the GT500. It would be nice if they made a car in the same ballpark as the Corvette but the truth is they probably won't. So until Ford comes out with a car meant to compete with the Corvette ppl are gonna compare to the GT500.

I like both cars. It’s impressive the numbers these area are pushing, but what’s more impressive is the fact that the C8 covered is only the base, compared to the top ranging Mustang GT500. It was the Base gt500 set up more for the drag strip vs the c8 z51 track built mid engine. The track pack was fAster by more than 4 seconds so not a real comparison so motortrend didn’t show that video.

The things that bother me about comparing the GT500 to the Z51 Corvette are as follows: Firstly, the Corvette has always been a true sports car, while the Mustang and Shelby variants have their place in US automotive history as cars that walked the line between being a 2+2 GT, and a muscle car. Only the Shelby has any real track history, and like many front-engine RWD drive cars, the Shelby is a completely different car than the Corvette - past and present. Secondly - comparing the Mustang/Shelby with a C8 Corvette is pointless, isn't it? Closer comparisons would be the Ford GT vs. the C8, especially when the Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 make their respective debut. Or, comparing the GT500 with a comparably-equipped Camaro... Third, and final assessment: If I had to choose between the C8 and the Shelby GT500, I'd have to go with the Vette - the reason being that Chevrolet has made a world-class car to compete with Ferrari, Lamborghini and German variants - at a level that is ACCESSIBLE by many, as the Ford GT - while a great car in its own right - is priced out of the equation for most people. The GT500 IS great, but look at the performance comparisons: If I want to drive a 'planted' car, the Vette is the obvious choice - as Motor Trend (I refuse to follow their new 'Motortrend,' as I've been reading their magazine for over 50 years), and others have found that the Shelby feels like it is floating when the magnetorheological shocks are pushed to their limit. This comparison was forced by the fact that Ford REALLY doesn't have a production car to compete with the C8. C'mon, people - even Motor Trend had to serve this up to their subscribers, and it is pretty obvious that A - they had to do something, and B - they didn't have any other real choices, did they? Comparing a wide-body Challenger to a GT500 would be a closer comparison (even though the Hellcat can't handle like the Shelby, the cars are in the SAME SEGMENT), but, let's just do a GT500/C8 comparison to be fodder for the enthusiasts...

Tim Golden the corvette was the objectively better car in terms of performance (like acceleration, lateral g, braking, etc) but the Mustang was the more entertaining. I’ve driven both and agree that if I was out to set lap times, I’d be in the GS, but if I wanted to have a memorable time I’d be in the GT350, absolutely no question. What an unbelievable car to drive.

What is the corvette better at than this GT500? Nothing. Performance wise. Absolutely nothing. Not braking. Not 1/4 mile times. Not lap times, GT500 beat it by 5 whole seconds that’s not even in the same class. The track pack GT500 tied a Porsche GT3RS. I’m tired of hearing it’s just a “mustang.” This GT500 can dance and it does it VERY VERY well. You almost sound ignorant making that sort of assessment. But hey, you could argue that you have a mid engine car with a pushrod engine in 2021? Hooray? I don’t see anything special about the base model C8. If the mide engine thing is exciting wait till you hear about the 2005 Ford GT. If I had to choose between the two I’d pick the GT350R. Now that is a car! It beat its competitor (z/28) so bad people forgot it existed. I do belive tho Ford does not make a direct competitor to the corvette. Which is interesting because every single corvette built except the C7 zr1 gets its ass handed to it by this GT500 track package. Even the base model C8.

Funny thing is that Motor Trend pulled the worst 0-60 and 1/4 Nile times I've heard of in the GT500! Rinzler I mentioned that with the carbon fiber package the GT500 left the C8 behind easily. But honestly you are at that point comparing a 92k car with a 70k car. The car motortrend used was a z51 so it’s not a 60k car but you don’t need 3lt and the other options to give it the same time. And a 20k+ price difference is a big price difference at these levels. I am beyond impressed by the GT500. Nothing but love for it. Just can’t make a video that pleases every single person.

Also, the non CFTP GT500 still beat the C8 track setup around VIR by more than a second. However, to your other point, both cars are within $6K of each other when you look at the published price as tested. That is more than close enough for almost 6 figure cars. It's not about pleasing every single person, it's about making a video that accurately and correctly reflects the subject matter in which your video is about. So heres the huge elephant in the room that no one who loves Corvettes wants to admit(I stay this as a corvette owner) THE C8 CORVETTE IS NO LONGER A MUSCLE CAR. The thing that makes them muscle cars is the location of the engine which muscles it's way to fast times despite all the weight of the car being in the front. By changing the location of the engine, you change the category of the car. A mid-engine car will always have the acceleration advantage, and handling advantage. But the fact that the GT500 mustang STILL BEATS IT IN EVERY CATEGORY EXCEPT 0-60 2.9>3.3 shows how amazing the actual muscle car is. You don't have to like it, but facts never care about feelings.

I thought the mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes were in like a different category because they are good track cars, not muscle cars. Dodge is the true muscle car currently because it's basically a straight line car, not really a good track car. I approve of the new Corvette in the performance aspect. Both are phenomenal cars but the Corvette is more revolutionary. I think the GT500 represents the highest evolution of the Mustang in it's current configuration while the Corvette is just entering a new era. I am stating the lowest price at which you can obtain each vehicle with the performance goodies, not the as tested price which includes luxuries. 1) Base Chevy Corvette w/ Z51 pkg, Magne shocks and Competition Sport Seats - $68K - lap time: 2:00.96 2) GT500 w/ Handling Pkg ($,1500) & Recaros ($1,595) - $77.1K - lap time: 1:59.68 3) GT500 w/Carbon Fiber Track Pack aka CFTP w/ R-compound Sport Cup 2 tires ($18,500) - $92.5K - lap time: 1:56.3 BTW, the GT500 stock does pull 10.6 stock in the 1/4 mile, check youtube, this is Porsche 911 Turbo S territory. Combined with the CFTP package above it does offer supercar track performance for $92.5K in the body of a Pony Car. Currently, for 2020 the only things that can beat it in the performance equation would start north of $150K like the Nissan GTR Nismo, various flavors of the 911 (Turbo, Turbo S and GT3). So for now, the GT500 is the real deal...... However: February 2, 2018 - "King ZR1 posted a jaw-dropping 2.37.3 time - over a second under the 2.38.6 lap record announced by Ford just last week"...(for the Ford GT)....Yes the Ford GT got beat by the previous ZR1 around a track. That should tell you something about what is coming up for the Z06 and/or ZR1 flavors. Why I'm talking about the Ford GT? Well, shouldn't this be the equivalent of the ZR1, their ultimate weapon? These 2 are the American Benchmarks and we are overlapping a Pony car into supercar territory, so it is a fair comparison. Remember that even though the ZR1 & Z06/Z07 had some of the highest g's ever recorded for a production car (1.19 g) they could not put down the power out of a corner or even out of the holeshot like a mid/rear-engined vehicle can. The C8 has done what the 911 and any other exotic has been doing all along, but at a price and performance that is indeed astounding. The C8 has maximized the acceleration potential of the platform.....Think about it...How is it possible that a 3,600 lb normally aspirated (non-turbo/non-supercharged) 495 HP V8 engine can accelerate from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and a 1/4 mile at 11.1? Equally impressive is how it feels around the corners. All this for less than $70K. Yes, the new versions of the Z06 and ZR1 should be ASTOUNDING. I've even read about 900 HP and AWD. Target: McLaren 720S, 911 GT2 RS and Aventador SVJ. In the meantime, the Camaro ZL1-1LE now has the auto-10 as an option, which is slightly quicker around the track than the manual-6 and which at a cost of $71K should be a good match around the track against the base version of the GT500. This would be a great comparison. For those of you doubters and/or haters, the 2018 manual ZL1-1LE was a hair faster around the Nurburgring track than a 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S, a $190,000 vehicle.
