Actually the Hyundai Elantra used to have independent rear suspension in all the trim lines. I know that my 3rd Gen Elantra which I bought in 2003 had independent rear suspension. I remember when I purchased that Elantra at that time I verified that all the 3rd Gen trim lines had the same better suspension. I also remember that the 4th Gen Elantra which was released in 2006 also had this better independent rear suspension in all trim lines as well. When Hyundai released the 5th Gen Elantra back (I believe it was back in 2011) that's when they started using the torsion beam suspension in most of the trim lines. I am not sure when the 5th Gen Sport trim line was released, but I know that the standard for several years here in the USA is that the Sport model does have independent rear suspension. BTW the Corolla also used to have a torsion beam suspension in most of their models as well. I am glad to see that Toyota made the change to go back to the better choice. I just wish Hyundai would do the same for their 4 door Elantra.

I much prefer an independent rear suspension, but if you give that up you can save a lot of money with the Elantra. Here in the USA you can easily purchase a base Elantra SE with IVT for between $16,000 and $17,000 US after dealer discounts, while a base Toyota Corolla will give you lower gas mileage and cost you at least $18,500 after dealer discounts. So, it's a matter of how much money you have to spend. I think the 2020 Elantra front end is ugly, but it does seem to look better in blue, silver, or fluid metal. How much ugly can you stomach to save money? They are reliable; probably more reliable than the Civic, so the cost per mile is very low over the vehicle's lifetime.

With regards to the front and rear clips on the Elantra AD (2017 to present), as an owner of a 2015 Elantra Limited (the Elantra MD, built from 2011 to 2016) I think I understand how they got to the current design. I love the looks of my Elantra MD and in 2017 when they launched the Elantra AD it was disappointing to see them 'Audi-fy' the Elantra by toning down the aggressive styling cues. I found it a bit too boring, and I think after it was launched they decided they'd gone too far in toning down the styling and the Elantra wasn't distinguishing itself from its competition so they went to work on a refresh that would bring some of the Elantra MD design back to the Elantra AD. Since there's only so much you can do with a front and rear clip it basically came down to hardening the lines for a more triangular design. I think the main issue is that they wanted to keep the big grille design (a design cue I don't particularly like) while making the headlights more aggressive so the lights ended up poking into the grille. I will say that in the dark its running lights make it a very distinctive vehicle; on my way home from work there's a 2019 Elantra owner who drives to work and I notice him every time. I'll also mention that in the future I can see Hyundai taking the front end design of the 2020 Sonata and using its styling cues (wide but lower grille, low swooping hood, distinctive running lights) on the next Elantra redesign.

So your point is?

I then explained my thought process of why it was changed. Zack mentioned at about the 40 second mark that he didn't think the change was an upgrade. I personally think it's a slight upgrade from the 2017-18 look because I like a more distinctive style but I do recognize it has flaws.

It's not about laziness. It's because they are rare these days and not as efficient as cvt, 9 speeds 8 speeds etc. The Manufacturers must meet cafe standards.
