2020 Lexus GS350 AWD 'Swan Song' Review: Is This Discontinued Sport-ish Sedan Any Fun?

After four generations and twenty-some years of production, the Lexus GS midsize sedan is no more. The final Lexus GS350 cars rolled off the production line in August 2020 and the model is officially discontinued at the end of the 2020 calendar year. But, as its swan song, #Lexus sent us a 2020 GS350 AWD to review and see if this rear-biased AWD sedan was any fun.

This car was supposed to be a luxury sports sedan. It couldn’t compete with the competition on any level outside of reliability. Consumers in this segment want luxury and sportiness and this car just doesn’t on either front.

@@victorkenarsy3024 I think what hurt the GS is the lack of current technology during it's run that other manufacturers offered. It is however, very luxurious. With the Luxury Package it comes with18 way power driver and pass seat, full auto tri-zone HVAC, rear window shades, rear glass pwr shade, pwr steering wheel, leather all over, real wood all over, rear passenger center console that can control audio and HVAC and shade, attractive 19" wheels, and the list goes on to include features the other manufacturers don't offer standard. My 2017 RWD with the Luxury package is a heck of a commuter/travel car. This is why I bought a Luxury Package equipped GS over the F-Sport. As far as sportiness goes, burnouts all day and I can oversteer the crap out of it and hang that rear end way out when I want. Had the same level of performance in my BMW's as well, of course they were slightly better in that regards, but by not much. I bought mine used as well as my BMW's and I can tell you, a 6 yr old Lexus vs a 6 yr old BMW are two different animals. Searching for a well sorted, maintained, clean Carfaxed BMW 5 series that didn't need something other than preventative maintenance is tough and can be expensive. My GS with 56k mi. needed nothing. At 60k all it will need, according to the schedule, is a brakes system flush and plugs changed, which I will do, but I will venture to say it probably will not need it. I will do it because I want it to go the distance. So, it is a luxury sports sedan. I just think the buyers that go for the Lexus brand don't venture into a Lexus looking for a sporty sedan. Like the reviewer stated, they want a luxurious car that will take them from A to B with no fuss and will not break down during their short ownership. I'm with @blackme1 , I could care less about Techi-systems/Android Auto anymore. Have always had it on my vehicles since it came out. Now that it's wireless, it's great when it works, but when it doesn't it's absolutely annoying. Any technology that doesn't work as it should is a waste IMO. I rather have less technology and high reliability, but to each his own. Will continue to purchase Toyota/Lexus vehicles in the future. This is my 4th.

Very competitive in 2013 but neglected over time as Lexus gave up on the car. Weirdos like me who don't like the cell phonification of cars like it but most people want all the new tech. Good for them, I don't give half a shit about having a turbo or apple car play so I LOVE my 2013 and want it to last until at least 2030 and hopefully beyond.

I have a 2018 GS350 F-Sport RWD and I love it! Extremely comfortable on my commute to and from work and very sporty when I take it on back roads in Sport+. I will say the only thing I wish it had was Apple car play. And yes the ML system is fantastic! Awesome video!

These cars are truly amazing. I bought my white on red 2016 GS350 F-Sport back in June 2020 with 41k miles for $31k & it's been a lot of car for the money. It now has 76k miles & has been problem free so far as expected & not planning on replacing it anytime soon. Planning on keeping it for at least a couple more years. Such a shame Lexus gave up on these cars. Wish they canceled the ES instead of the GS. I've driven the current ES several times & hate it compared to the GS. The GS has MUCH better handling, looks better IMO, better interior materials & a firm, but still comfortable & smooth ride. It's literally the car I've been waiting for for years.

Most people who buy Lexus are probably not too concerned about high performance and sport. Its the high quality and nice ride and reliably they want. Go buy a race car if you want extreme speed and performance.

Nice job, particularly the opening background. I have a 2015 GS AWD and it glides when on the road. Your explanation of the 70/30explains why. The grill actually changed in 2016. Yes the electronics are dated, but if you try some newer vehicles with updated systems, they can be confusing. Thanks.

It did not sell well because it was a "sporting-luxury" nee "touring" sedan. The previous 3rd generation model was a pure luxury sedan, such that it sold more than 33,000 units in its first full year in the US. The more sporty a sedan - the lower the sales volume.@@victorkenarsy3024
