CONGRATS NC STATE FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST EVER NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP! WELL EARNED!

For those who don't know, NC State women's cross country also won back to back team national championships in 1979 and 1980...when the sport was under the AIAW (just prior to switching over to the NCAA in 1981). It was effectively the same as an NCAA championship (competing against all the same schools), just under a different name.

Orton took off.. she was not being caught after that. Great pack racing from NC state to take the win. It's crazy how long Kelsey, Katelyn, Hannah, and Ally stayed so close together. Shout out to the ladies at 20:15 & 21:50 who finished with nothing left! The first was the 5th finisher for BYU, and the second was able to get up and finish with a time of 22:40. She also collapsed at the finish line lol

No one was beating NC State on this day. Question for the commenters: I’m confused as to why almost every team has their 4th and 5th scorers go out fast…like “up with the leaders” fast for the first 1k only to have them fade badly in the final 2k. For example, OK State’s 4th and 5th did their first K in 3:17 and 3:15, only to be doing 3:33-3:39 for the final 2k. This isn’t just OK State….it’s pretty much the same across the board. Why are coaches having their 4th-7th going out with the leaders? It’s like a textbook way to have them run well below potential for that day. Does someone argue that the psychological benefit from being up front early counter all the physiological penalties incurred by going out too fast?

You can't really compare times in cross country when talking about different courses. Courses are not all exactly 6,000 meters. Some are a little longer than 6k, some a little shorter than 6k. Also, the course conditions can vary a lot, affecting times -- eg, more/less hills, condition of footing on course (eg, muddy, etc).

They don't tell you the date. They don't tell you where. They don't tell you the distance in miles, or what the records are, or what the field is here, or the age or grade min/max, or eligibility criteria. They don't do the viewers any favors.
@lauradufresne66282 жыл бұрын
Well I think they assume that if you're watching this that you know about XC. And I think you can infer many of the questions you asked. Like it's a college race, so that tells you the age/ grades. It's a D1 race with tells you the field. The date and place popped up in a box in the beginning and the distance is 3.72 mi.

On purpose?
@scotthable8883 жыл бұрын
Yes, because networks only show the lead pack at nearly all times during races by design. Their purpose is to tell the story and call and analyze the race.
@t.c.98383 жыл бұрын
I think the question is, did she run barefoot on purpose, ala Zola Budd? Or did something happen to her shoes during the race?
@scotthable8883 жыл бұрын
Yes, she ran barefoot intentionally because she is more comfortable running in bare feet than in shoes.. She has also run in shoes when courses have been tough in regard to footing.

NC State had all 5 in before BYUs 3rd came in. BYU had the better 1-2 but NC State had a much better 3-5. Similar story on the men with NAU and Iowa State having all 5 in before BYU's 3rd. BYU women probably won't podium next year because they're loosing Anna Camp and Whittni Orton.
