Max is definitely taking a bit of a different approach, due to their good winning chances. Lewis and Max pushing each other is amazing, they're both in great form. Small mistakes are always there, especially when pushing, Lewis and Max both made mistakes of different gratitude and different outcomes in the first 3 races. I think a lot of it comes from the fact SKY was really trying to favorite RBR in the first 3 races so far, no idea why. FYI, "Dutch fans are scary" is probably coming from Twitter experience, please don't judge the non-social media peeps with them :P. Thanks for the podcast!

I don’t know if I buy the whole “Max is only 23” argument. Yes, he’s much younger than Lewis, but he’s not a rookie, and is in his seventh season and has the experience of some 30 yo drivers. Seb and Lewis were champions at 23. Fernando at 24. And all three overcame older and more experienced drivers to win.
@flowmeful
@flowmeful 3 жыл бұрын
They also had a great car and luck which you need if you want to win a championship. Imola showed that, Hamilton was lapped and would never get second yet he was lucky and was able to unlap himself and get by inferior cars quite easy.
@michaelx4810
@michaelx4810 3 жыл бұрын
@@flowmeful and Max has a great car. Sometimes you make your own luck: many drivers would have beached that car in the gravel and not put themselves in the position where they can take advantage of subsequent good fortune. Seb, Lewis and Fernando didn’t have it all their own way in their championship debuts. You’re missing the point: all these drivers got the job done at a young age. I’m not saying Max won’t get the job done (in fact, I hope he does). But we can’t say “oh he’s 23, so it’s alright”. They’ll even ignore what the team are saying (Horner: “we had the edge on the medium, and Mercedes on the hard”) and afterwards act like it’s impossible to win. When they do win, they act like it was inevitable. Very confused / insecure bunch. Ok contrast, when Lewis had the slower car in quali and ok the race in Bahrain, he found a way. Both max and lewis have made about 3 mistakes now, but the merc is still a better car to make up for it! - Ham went off in the first race when max was behind him, but even on the dirt his car was as fast as the bull on the racing line! - ham went off pushing behind russell, but got lucky with the red flag allowing him to recover and even during that race the mercs race pace was better than the bulls, with ham catching up and deminishing that 5 sec lead really quickly! Meaning his mistake cost him a win! - ham fell asleep behind the sc, but was faster on racepace and able to keep up with max! And even without that slight oversteer snap from max, he still would have gotten passed by ham, cause the bull on its own merit only got 314kph… The first race almost all overtakes were done in that turn 4 or the straight with drs. onboards from ham showed the merc still pulling away from the bull on the straights meaning turn 4 was the only option! Toto said they had to turn down the engine from bottas as a precaution and that had he would’ve passed verstappen if not for that! The race pace from the merc was still faster than the rb in clean air, so even if he had gotten pole, he probably still would’ve gotten 2nd or 3rd. There have been so many moments where the merc was just faster in these races… I can’t believe we fell for the sandbagging tricks from toto telling us the bull is faster :|
@jtwilliams721
@jtwilliams721 3 жыл бұрын
Max has made (3) mistakes regarding track limits alone. The pass off track in rd1, the lost pole in rd3 and lost fastest lap in rd3. Don’t forget the 0.3s lost on his final run in Q3 during rd2 quali. In defense of Hamilton’s off track excursion in rd1, I think it was more due to the old tires than to driver error, but it was an error non the less.
@bynahelemaal
@bynahelemaal 3 жыл бұрын
@@jtwilliams721 yeah, but my point is that none of those mistakes from verstappen would have turned up a different end result on sunday! Point made in this vid: max should’ve waited to overtake somewhere else! My rebuttal: impossible, cause almost all overtakes during the first race were made in that turn 4 or on the straights and since onboards from ham’s t cam (rearwingview), in the laps leading up to that infamous overtake, showed the merc on old tires and no drs still pulling away from max on the straights and high speed corners, as well as Ham (no drs/old tires) also able to keep up with max (drs/newer tires) with giovinazzi right next them, it leaves the turn 4 option as the only possible point of overtaking… had he waited longer it still would’ve been the same result, cause then the prime window of tires to do anything would’ve been gone from following ham so long! Even bottas was able to keep up (and gaining) in the first stint, until they botched his pit stop! Perhaps if verstappen had waited to go on the throttle, then no snap… Notible mention: during fp ham was worried about the times of the bull, bono calmly reassured him by telling him rbr was pushing engine settings so no worries at merc at all, cause they were taking it easy! Imola should’ve been a pole, but than that, arguably, would’ve given hamilton that dry patch advantage… both cars started in 2nd gear, but it seems that sc car dry patch gave max less wheel spin… In any case, if hamilton hadn’t made that mistake, he would’ve caught verstappen, cause he was closing that 5 sec gap rapidly, twice, before and after the pitstop! Point made in this vid: pole would’ve been a win in portimao My rebuttal: could’ve been a pole, but in the end, that race also would’ve been won by merc, cause their race pace has constantly been better… Also rb and that slow ass topspeed of 314kph was never gonna be good enough to have enough overspeed on the straight to overtake a merc! if the bull supposedly had a setup made for leading, then they need to fix it, cause even in free air max as well as checo were still slower than the mercs! And according to toto, bottas’ engine was turned down as a precaution, and that he would’ve passed max otherwise, means max was lucky he even got 2nd place at all. Not to mention the mercs in Q2 going low 1.18’s, ham going in the 1.17’s on mediums… which red bull never got close to! In the end, ham had a somewhat lucky win in bahrein, max had lucky win in imola, and the 3rd played out exactly as expected, cause of the superior race pace of the merc… which toto himself mentioned so if max waits on the throttle and doesn’t have that snap in the first race, and he wins If ham waits and doesn’t go off behind russell and wins And ham wins in portimao… it’s still 2-1! And we’re still here falling for toto’s sandbag tactics, believing the red bull is faster, because we want a exciting fight, when in reality it’ll probably be another merc/ham title win! I feel like verstappen knows the rb16b is still not fast enough… hence the sitting duck a la hungary comment and why he’s still pushing seemingly more than neccesary

I think Portimao should stay. It may not have been a Bahrain or Imola but from the two races it’s given us in 2020 and 2021, it has had two pretty solid races. That’s a 2/2 for not having a snoozefest. I’ll take that. People are talking about Portimao as if it’s the next Barcelona, Sochi or France! Defo a solid track that’s been on par with some of the other ‘solid’ tracks these last couple years like Austria or Hungary. Honestly, I’d rate this race above nearly every 2020 race that wasn’t one of the crazy three (Turkey, Monza, Sakhir + maybe Austria) I’d like to see it again and defo won’t be writing it off my wish list. Imola may have been a fantastic race in the rain this year but after last years race I was happy for it to disappear. Just goes to show that as long as a track has potential, it deserves a chance on the calendar. I think Portimao has that potential! Unfortunately money might be an issue tho. Portugal isn’t exactly Saudi Arabia or the UAE when it comes to having money to blow..

We definitively have been too spoiled with 2021 so far, people forget that Imola would have been an absolute snoozefest if it hadn't rained (not to mention people wouldn't be nearly as happy with it if Hamilton had lead the whole race like Verstappen did). Bahrain was only entertaining because Mercedes outsmarted Red Bull despite having a worst car at that point, which lead to a tight chase. Add to that that 2020's best races were all ones where either there was rain or Merc fucked up, and you can see that the tracks had little to do with it themselves. Portimão has all the charateristics for a good F1 track, it just can't deliver on it without some crazy, random shenanigans happening. I doubt it will be on the calendar for 2022 (mainly for money reasons), but I'd wager that the 2022 cars would be a blast to watch there.

On comparing Bottas to Albon, I feel that if RB and Merc's pace were swapped last year, it would have been very different and that Bottas' saving grace is his qualifying. Albon showed pace in flashes next year but *in general* he was never in a position after Saturday that let him have some good clean air running and he struggled to pull off overtakes. When Bottas falls back through the field, he tends to get stuck while Hamilton (or Russel that one time) scythes through the pack.

He was already abt 1,5 sek away and the "overtake forecast graphic" said that he is 2 laps away from possible overtaking chance, but then suddenly his car got a sensor failure, which caused him to loose power, thus the gap grew to 5 sek. Although Bottas is slower in race pace than VER and HAM, he has had a HUGE amount of bad luck with him. He has been SO unlucky this season.
