same I keep 35 books in my book drawer because I don't have room in my house, iv got the cloth bound box set of 6 that the cloth smelt like bubble gum, present city, invincible life of Addie ralue, and 22 of Stephen Kings and 5 books from the pound shop. right now I can only get them fro, the pond shop and Morrisons till the charity shops here reopen and I can get some at they shops or any charity shops, if I cant get into book sops or the local library but usually I get them from Amazon.

If you like early female explorers and aviators, then I HIGHLY recommend the memoir written by Beryl Markham: West with the Night. She was a female bush pilot in early 1900's Kenya. Her writing is outstanding and hearing about her experience was fascinating. Her third husband actually claimed that he wrote the book himself and they didn't find out the truth until the 1980's when they discovered Hemingway's letters of praise for her writing. So amazing.

Omg A Little Life is a JOURNEY. I still find myself thinking about many of the characters, and I sobbed (sobbed!) numerous times while reading. Good luck 😂😅 A Secret History is also excellent. Klara and the Sun sounds great! Added to my list!

Everytime I watch your videos It inspire me to read. Love the cover of the books you choose. This year I want to buy myself an e-reader so I can read more (I'm a working mother), but I'll buy books with beautiful covers (hope so). Thanks for the inspiration. 😊

Wizard of Earthsea is seriously one of the best wizarding books I've read since the HP books. She was the first to write about a young wizard going to school. She was so ahead of her time. Gah So excited to hear what you think of it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who chooses to read books just because they're got a beautiful floral cover 🙃. I'm loving all your book video content at the moment! I'm so happy for you that you're managing to read more every year, too. I used exactly the same strategy and gradually built up reading slightly more each year :) I look forward to following all your 2021 reading 💛

I love your Japanese book selections! After "Strange Weather..." I recommend "The Nakano Thrift Shop" by Hiromi Kawakami- I fell in love with the characters and the cover alone is Kawaii! 😁. I also really like Banana Yoshimoto. "Moshi Moshi" was beautiful, by my favorite of her's is "Kitchen" which also contains the short story "Moonlight Shadow". Like with many Japanese stories, the experience of having loved & lost definitely helps you connect with the stories on a deeper level. 😁

I have owned that exact same edition of Lord of the Rings since 2012, and last year I finally read it. I kept putting it off because 1. it's huge, and 2. I was afraid it was going to be too dry (I had some trouble with that while reading The Hobbit), but I absolutely loved it!! The only negative I could name is that the book is indeed too big to comfortably hold up, so I just read it while in bed or on the couch and leaning it on my knees, or sitting at a table ^-^ but the illustrations are gorgeous and the story itself is obviously amazing, so I hope you get around to it! Loved the video!! Earthsea and Angela Carter are on my TBR as well. I'm also looking forward to Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, the new book by Casey McQuiston, and I still haven't read The Priory of the Orange Tree so really want to get around to that as well. Let's make it an excellent year!

Have you read The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X.R. Pan? I feel like you would like it, it's set in Taiwan with elements of magical realism and it looks at grief, growing up and family history. Here's an excerpt from the blurb: "Guided by a mysterious red bird, Leigh travels to Taiwan to meet her grandparents for the first time. There, Leigh retreats into art and memories, where colours collide, the rules of reality are broken and the ghosts of the past refuse to rest … But Leigh is determined to unlock her family's secrets."

I had to laugh when you inserted the correction that the woman in her 30’s wasn’t “young”. 🤣
@christy-anne-jones
@christy-anne-jones 4 жыл бұрын
I debated really hard over that one! D: Because the woman is in her late 30s (which makes me think 38) and when I hear 'young woman' I specifically think 25? That perception will probably change when I'm 30... lol. I didn't want to confuse anyone, and also late thirties of course isn't *old*, but given that she forms a relationship with a former teacher I felt like her age was relevant bc if she was 22, that might have a different connotation to if she were 37? Idk. words are difficult D:

I read the bear and the nightingale after it was on the book club choices for December. Really enjoyed it. I put On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous on my worst books of 2020. I really hated it and I don’t hate many books. Mainly because you could tell the mom had a hard life but tried her best to give him a good life and then she dies so he writes this “letter” about everything wrong with her and how he was raised. It was really said in that I wanted to smack him for being so oblivious to what she gave up for him. Selfish jerk. 🙄 that’s my non- spoiler review 😬

What an interesting perspective; I really felt that his love for his mother came through in the book. I thought I'd just let you know that his mother passed away after his book was published. He wrote this tribute for her on his instagram "what can a son say to the great loss from which he owes his own life? Only that my world has changed forever. It can never be what it was. It was absolutely less-and yet perennially more because of what you have given me, Ma. You taught me that our pain is not our destiny-but our reason. You gave me all the reasons. Thank you. I bow to you. I will see you again. Every word was always for you. Every sentence a life (-giving) sentence".
