While not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, we thought it was worthwhile to compare our long-term Tesla Model Y Standard Range to the hot new Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. This comparison turned out to be less of a comparison between the two cars themselves but rather a discussion about the merits of EV lifestyle vs. plug-in hybrid benefits. Enjoy!

SO! Got my RAV4 Prime, and cannot be happier. After selling my Tesla Models 3 and Y, this car is the Goldie Locks car for me right now. I love the ride. I have a 19 mile commute to work. When I first got the car, I put a 800 miles on it, almost all highway, so the EV range would charge to the low 40s. Now that we’re in better weather and I’ve been using it to commute, I’m at 52 miles of EV range; so, no need to use gas. The EV power in ECO mode is fine, and the sport mode is very fine. Not TESLA quick, but to be honest, after doing that party trick a half dozen times, you don’t really use it (at least I didn’t). I do have some nits with the car/Toyotas in general. Too many beeps (e.g., open door, tailgate opening, check the back seat)…the center console is KILLING my knee while driving (bought an aftermarket pad for it that should arrive tomorrow). The OEM infotainment system interface blows. Thankfully I spend 99% of my time in Apple CarPlay. The most perplexing aspect of the car is the app…no way to tell what the EV charge is, how fast it’s charging, how much time left to charge, no notifications on charging…it’s as if this was the first PHEV Toyota made…very odd…OH! The base stereo system is absolutely terrrrrrrible! I have the SE. Already purchased upgraded tweeters to start with…we’ll see if that improves it. Mostly listen to podcasts, so don’t need a full range of sound, but voices need to be clear. Backup camera is mediocre. I got spoiled with my TESLA between the stereo and camera quality. Lastly, wish the lane keep assist was more centered vice hugging the right line. Not my preference…but, it works well.

Confused to decide between Model Y or Rav4 Prime. Can i ask why you moved from Tesla to Rav4 ? The commute to work is almost 35 miles one way for me, not sure which to decide and the weather in TX is not cold as well

@@chytu558 It was pretty simple…I had the Y, 3, and a Honda CRV. I was driving the 3…I bought the Y for my wife (who was driving the CRV), and the CRV was going to be for my son who was just getting his license….my wife hated driving the Y…she’s not a tech person…so, couldn’t have my son driving the Y…and I was on my way to getting a second hip replacement so the 3 was too low for me…so, sold them both and got the RAV4 Prime and a Kia Niro EV, which, to be honest, is way better as an overall fit for us…it’s rated at 239 miles of range, but I think I got that on the coldest day of the year…mostly get in the 250 range charging to 80%. When fully charged, we easily get over 300 miles. Just moved from Virginia Beach to DC…we had the Kia packed to the gills with luggage, food, two cats, and 3 people…range indicated 310 when we started. We made it to our new home (221 miles away) with 89 miles of range left. Pretty darn good in 90 degrees plus heat and very little traffic on the highway…

Love the feedback from Tesla owners. I have been a huge supporter of Toyota for decades and also respect Tesla. I am glad to hear that Toyota is still a formidable opponent against Tesla. I am in the market for a new car and getting a RAV4 due to price. From all the comments, I feel like I am making a great choice for my needs and I don’t feel I am missing out on the Tesla.

@@DailyMotor I dont if you realize there is no sound deadening materials on the wheel wells of the Model Y. So you will hear and feel every imperfections on the road. My Model y had numerous rattles coming from the trunk area, it drove crazy.

Toyota has years of 7.5k - 9.5k tax credits and rebates remaining and there is nothing but rumor that Tesla will get their credits back (and a lot of car manufacturer's lobbying against that). These vehicles really aren't the same price, the Rav4 is 10k cheaper and it's top end trim comes in at what the no-longer-available entry level trim of the MY was. Going to disagree with the PHEV relevancy argument. It's true that EV's are the future, but arguing that we're already there ignores the limited network of charging stations, that generally charging is going to add a long wait to your trip (both for your turn on the charger and the time to charge) on a road trip or restrict some vacation destinations all together because there's no chargers nearby that mountain lodge, beach or hotel. You end up parked in some plaza parking lot to charge up every couple days on your trip. I can't count the number of times I've seen the same Tesla's charging at the mall when I arrive as when I leave, because no one is coming back to move their car for the next guy. The Rav4 / PHEV in general get you "fast charging" anywhere in the world via gas, but you get to do the vast majority of your driving on electric for commuting, along with actual AWD, ground clearance and spare tire for the destinations and climates that make crossovers appealing. Tesla EV's are like Apple ditching USB-A for USB-C in 2016 when USB-C adoption was limited. 5 years later we're at the 50/50 point. The Rav4P is better suited to the world today and will probably still have the edge in 5 years, even if the EV future is on the way. Realistically I think we'll see most cars switch to PHEV until the charging situation is solved with solid states or some other better battery tech. Good overall review, didn't leave too much on the table!

Great video! I’ve owned both a Model 3 and Y. Sold both after two years. Loved them both, but you do need to be a little more strategic when traveling long distances. While Superchargers are pretty well planned on the main highways, if there are any issues with them, it does create a pucker factor. Did it for 2 years, had no issues, and enjoyed it. BUT, now getting a RAV4 Prime because I’ve always thought a PHEV with enough range for me to commute to work (19 miles one way) would be ideal. The RAV4 Prime is ideal for that. So, we’ll see how it goes! Looking forward to it. You made a good point about how long people hold onto cars. My Teslas were great, but there were numerous issues. To be clear, none affected the car’s ability to start, drive, or move. And, all were taken care of by mobile service or at the shop under warranty. BUT, once out of warranty, those repairs will add up quickly! Things like the window motors (been changed 2x already)…

@@faultless18 YES! I did buy the RAV4 Prime. LOVED it, but sold it after 9 months because someone was dumb enough to give me 9k more than what I paid for it! LOL…Anyway, as I had hoped, it was ideal for me and my daily commute to do on full electric. Under normal weather conditions I would easily get 48 miles of range. In cooler weather, or hotter weather, that would drop to closer to 32, so engine would kick in for part of my drive. But, on long distance drives it was nice to be able to fully control when to use all EV, hybrid, or engine only…I will probably buy another once there are more available and the prices come down, BUT, I will get the XLE and not the SE. I had the SE. The sound system was absolutely TERRIBLE! Even after replacing a few of the speakers, the head unit just blows…That was my biggest gripe. There are few other differences between the XLE and the SE that I preferred, but can’t think of them right now. As for now, I’m driving a Kia Niro EV and it is absolutely perfect for every day local driving. Gets close to 300 miles on a charge, drives very nicely. Power is more than enough, the infotainment is worlds better than Toyota, and everything works all the time. I’ve had no issues with it. But, it doesn’t have the looks or fast charging of the Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5, so it doesn’t get all the attention those get…But, since I don’t use it for road trips, I don’t need the fast charging…saved a ton on the price too! Can’t recommend enough if you don’t need a car for long trips.

@@djaztec97 Since my kids are driving the Kia, I prefer it over the TESLA. My son was driving the Y for a while, but it’s too much car and pressure for a teenager…so, the Kia rocks now!

Thanks. This was informative and two cars that many of us consider and good to compare. Just ordered a Rav 4 plug in though owing to leasing cost, and long range practicality combined with many school runs. One day it’ll be pure EV but not yet.

Awesome video! I'm on the fence between getting the two, two points of contention between the two are highway noise and suspension/ ride comfort. You mentioned a little about the two but could you elaborate a little more. Where would you place these two in those categories and how would you discribe them?

Very good review! We considered the Rav Prime before buying our model Y. We love the Y but you have to accept the limitations of EV for long travel and the more expensive initial cost of the Y. If we only could have 1 vehicle, I would probably have opted for the Rav. So we use our EV for daily and our pickup truck for long travel now which is perfect for us.

Thanks, and very well said! Access to an ICE vehicle is still important for certain needs. For some people, that might be infrequent enough that renting would make sense. But the RAV is still a great choice.

My daily commute averages 30-36 miles in my RAV4 Prime. As far as I know, I am living the full EV lifestyle.

@@entourage26 Yeah, learnt that in my researching PHEVs. So far the longest I've gone without filling up is a little less than 3 months. Plus, I have a feeling it is in the software that the engine come on for a couple minutes randomly every couple weeks or so of non use.

2 year later, 2023 Tesla Model Y currently having $7500 tax credit and long range dual motor cost $48,490 with no Extra option. For those who fit in that income range to be eligible for full tax credit then Model Y would be great option to buy plus 2023 build quality got much better now than before

i was looking for a new car, considered hybrid, leaned toward a Prius, then thought RAV4, then considered the Primes. In the end, I decided on the RAV4 Prime and ordered one 3 months ago. They told me the out the door price would be almost 56K. I asked for top of the line and got many add-ons. They also added some things I didn't want, but insisted they add them to all cars sold at that dealership. Anyway, I was happy with my decision but thought what the hell, might as well look at some alternatives if I was going to be spending that much money. I test drove a Model 3 and a Model Y. I was blown away. Loved the way they both drive. Incredibly fun. I have not had that much fun driving since I was a teenager and driving was new to me. Since then it has just become a necessary part of life. Until I drove a Tesla. I found the Y (vs the 3) more compatible with what I was looking for. A bit bigger. Love the rear leg room and all the space. Just a little higher. Etc. The Prime may seem like the best of both worlds. But the longer I thought about it, it also has the worst of both worlds. Its EV, but for only 40miles. You still have an engine, brakes and all the other stuff in a combustible engine car to maintain and repair over time. That engine provides a security blanket in the form of "unlimited" range. But I don't need that. I drive around Atlanta. I can plug in at home overnight. If we go to Florida or anywhere else, we have my wife's Telluride. Lot of Tesla haters posting here about build quality etc. Well, they have improved substantially by all reports over the last year. FYI I also test drove the Volkswagen ID4, it was great. But not in the same league as the Tesla. Nor was the Kia/Hyundai. I also drove a friend's Mustang MachE. It was very nice and tempting--looks really cool. But I preferred the simplicity of the Tesla styling. And the fact that they have built 100,000's just this year of them compared to Ford which is in the 10,000's total and struggling. Also, Tesla, made in USA. And don't forget about automated driving. Not there yet. But impressive tech and that will never be on a RAV4. So, I got a call just yesterday that my Prime is here and ready for pickup. When I placed the order they said I didn't need to buy it if I didn't like it after the test drive--they'd be able to sell to someone else immediately. I guess I'll go test drive it and make a final decision. I'm guessing it will be the Tesla. But the Tesla is not going to be delivered until December at the earliest. In the meantime, it's my 2003 Outback.

@@stephenfiore9960 I bought the Model Y, and love it. No build issues for me. I spent $17 on electricity over the last 31 days to fuel my car. (8 cents/kwh here). Really love everything about it except the limited color options. Wish it came in silver, all the colors they have seem to look dirty unless you wash your car every week.

Is The Well to wheel data including The 12kw power Per gallon, used to refine The Oil before it Can be used for gas? I have read this is not included in The normal w-t-w calculation

Tried both, ended up getting the Rav4 Prime. Oh boy - what a fun little vehicle! Superb handling and response. My comparison (quite subjective, so take it with a grain of salt): Tesla: + Ease of purchase, transparency +/- Super in Tech aspect, so-so in car aspect (drive, comfort, reliability, build quality control) - Reliability issues (not first hand, but reported by friends and family) - Really long wait time for repairs. This itself kills the deal for me. - Range planning - anxiety: Miss gas engine when I need it for long trips. I absolutely hate doing an hour stop here and there for charging. - Depreciation - Tesla themselves cutting prices like crazy. - I personally hate the look of Teslas. Compared to Mustang Mach-E or Inonic 5, tesla is honestly quite boring. Rav4: - Purchase experience still bad. Dealing with dealers + availability of Rav4 prime. +/- Super in car aspect (drive, comfort, reliability, QC), but poor in tech aspect. + Amazing reliability. We are talking 200K-400K miles here without drama. - Still need oil changes and regular ICE upkeep. + No wait time for repairs. + Love the look - a proper fun little SUV, especially certain colors. + No range anxiety - love the gas back up option for road trips. On full charge + gas tank, I can drive 600 miles without even stopping for gas. How incredible is that? + Rugged, rugged, rugged. Feels like a civilized ATV. + 10 year 150K warranty for battery. + Depreciation In all practicality, the world will never come to electric only vehicles. At the best it will be a combination of gas, electric, other alternate energy source all co-existing for the next 50 years at least. If you have only electric, you WILL miss gas vehicle at many times in a year. If you have Hybrid, you will not miss having an electric only vehicle.

In August 2020 I was deciding between the Model Y performance and the Toyota RAV4 Prime. I ended up choosing the exact Prime as in the video but in metallic gray. The reasoning I’m in North Texas and it currently is not built out with Tesla charging stations so it would be Level 2 charging only. Also I can be forgetful to plug in daily and the not having to chase down charging stations waiting around forever to charge up a Tesla. Then there is the whole more capable all terrain type vehicle that has 2 drive systems, a built in 1500 watt generator for camping or when your house has no power that it can run a space heater, a lamp, TV and internet router. That just happened in Texas and the RAV4 XSE Premium Prime saved the day. There is also a self charging mode that these reviews don’t talk about that works great. You hit charge mode and the gas engine will charge the cars battery so that generator can work for days. I know because of real use. Yes I like the Tesla but there is also solid state batteries and new tech coming up in full EV’s that will make your current model Y into a old tech car compared to the new evolution of this new electric automotive evolution. Reminds me of buying a new computer in the 90’s and suddenly in 6 months something 10 times better in technology comes out. The RAV4 Plug it will bridge the gap. I currently only fill up in gas about 10 gallons a month getting 99 MPG due to the 40+ miles of pure EV. This video is a good review and definitely lays the facts out but in my case the RAV4 Prime just checked off all the boxes. Yes there is a big after market for the RAV4 so there is already a 2 inch lift kit for the Prime and tons of other goodies that just make the Prime a over all great SUV for what I need it to do. I truly was excited for Tesla’s awesome 0- 60 acceleration but 5.7 seconds is fast enough for the Prime.

The Prime and Model Y are both solid choices. The ONLY problem with the prime is availability. I agree 100% that it's almost criminal Tesla doesn't include a 230v/30a inverter. They will with the Cyber Truck, but they should today with ALL their cars. The solid state battery bit I disagree with. There will always be a better car every year. No reason not to buy the best one today. Under your theory, no one should buy gas today but that just doesn't make sense for a large number of people.

I have have read extensively about the other PHEV suv models and manufacturers, and I feel the RAV4 prime is right up there. All the best. Auckland. NZ

@Ro Baas well the Prime is heavier with the bigger battery at 4400 lbs, the turning radius is great but for a heavy vehicle it’s not driving on rails, it has a low center of gravity so no fears of it rolling or something like that. They are coming out with adjusts for the moose test just like the software fixes for the regular hybrid. The breaking is seamless with normal use, you can tell that if pushed hard the abs is working to get the car stopped and there is a switch from the regen braking to traditional brakes you can feel at very hard braking. The car isn’t a track car but it is a performance car as the speed is there when put in that mode and the suspension stiffens as well. All EV batteries are effected by temperature and high speeds. The sweet spot is warmer temps and driving around 40mph for the best range on all EV from driving the RAV4 Prime and a Tesla Mode Y. The cameras for back up and 360 is slightly dated but works great. The rear view digital mirror camera is top notch. The RAV4 Prime is the best of both worlds in the evolution of modern gas cars and the new EVs. The Tesla Y is in its infancy and will be evolving more and more so you will be constantly upgrading. It’s also part of Tesla’s strategy and the EV car industry. It’s also proprietary as they try to keep everything under one roof from charging stations to repairs to selling the car. There is new battery technology on the horizon that made me think twice about getting a Tesla. I typically keep cars for a long time. So I wanted mild off roading, a good camping car, long drives, simplistic use if I for get to charge, save on gas station trips, no charging stations to worry about. The Premium Package XSE is what I got and 100% the best choice if you want all the extras. The RAV4 Prime is go cheap with the SE model and mod it or go Maxed out. I have done some minor mods like switching LEDs, switching to LEDs in the window roll up buttons, added hydraulics struts to the hood, sequential side mirror mod and the horn upgrade. I spent like $200 for all that. I chose the Toyota Max platinum extended warranty the more I read how much tech is in this car. I’m also betting within 10 years there will be a aftermarket solid state battery upgrade for more extended range and better charge speed so I can take the cars use for maybe another 5 years. I think 10-15 years the EV market tech will be plateaued by then. EV cars remind me of buying a computer or cell phone. They make great leaps in technology that you want to ditch it for the next best thing. So I had a laptop I kept from 2010 till 2020 and just got into a G14. Now I’ll see where tech goes with time. Remember you get the $7500 tax credit and maybe some state money too. Tesla doesn’t have that anymore. So I got one of the first XSE in the country so I did pay $6000 over MSRP but I did have them give me the top extended warranty included in that. It’s worth around $3k that I can still get a full refund on so I basically paid $3k over to get one of the first ones in the country and The first one in Texas. Do I regret getting the Prime over the Model Y? Nope. I’m very happy with it and also the fact that there are many Toyota dealerships all over the country and where I live is Toyota HQ down the street. Toyota is the most reliable and conservative cars out there with the biggest network of dealerships and support. That also played a big part in my purchase. It’s the best transitional car in a fossil fuel driven world that’s just starting to go more EV. Toyota “Maybe” going Full EV by 2025 by the way.

I appreciate you doing such a detailed and thorough review. I truly enjoyed it! It made me further realize what I prioritize and helped me make my decision. While I respect your opinion,the choice for me is the Prime. Why, because I prioritize reliability and worry free driving in alll conditions over a few tech related details here and there at the cost of the much more reliable and time tested hybrid model. It's like getting the best from both worlds. I have seen too many bugs and assembly mistakes on the Teslas. Not to mention, the price hikes you mentioned (though to be fair, both have had hikes). I much prefer the conventional buttons as well, because I can actually keep my eyes on the road vs on a tablet that has no physical indicators making it extremely inconvenient to do basic things like change the temperature in the car. In the RAV even my backseat passengers can control things like heated seats and my passenger can control their own temp. RAV4 is due for a refresh though and I expect the tech to go up with thar as well and that's when I plan on buying. Thanks again though for everything!

Great comparison video. I am fortunate to experience both styles as I have a Tesla M3 and just replaced my Kia Sorento with a RAV4 Prime…I was considering the Tesla MY but with build quality concerns, design redundancy with M3 & MY, and long distance reliability I went with the RAV4. They each have their own style/feel which is the variety I am happy to have! 👍🏽👍🏽

Not sure what reliability or quality issues with model y you’re talking about but sounds like you’re convincing yourself you made the right choice? Our model y was near perfect, drive is so much fun and smooth and quiet!

@@eplugplay8409 Ay bro chill. Tesla has been renowned for their quality issues, but it's getting better these days. Least to say, Toyota's build, finish, alignment and generally quality factor does blow any Tesla car out of the water. We already have Rav4, and it's super comfortable. We're preordering the Model Y, and I would lie if I said we didn't have concern for the delivery in terms of issues and faults. But I heard Tesla been doing good 2022 so hopefully 2023 models will be just fine.

I have the RAV4 Hybrid but looking to trade in for Tesla Y. Thank you for the comparison. While I loved my Rav4 my 6'8" husband found it very uncomfortable and could only drive it for limited time. I also then after a little time into ownership realized I had one of the defective vehicles that only gets 10 gal of gas and have been fighting w/ Toyota ever since. They refuse to acknowledge that 10 gals is not the touted 14.5 and won't fix it. Really bummed b/c I would've accepted my husband not driving my car. I thought to trade in for a Prime but am afraid of ending up in the same situation w/ a bad gas tank.

Thanks for the great video! I don't agree with your assessment though... I think the case for hybrids will get stronger and stronger... Imagine being able to replace the rav4 primes 40 mile range battery bank in 5 years... With an 80 mile range bank? I don't believe we are near the end of hybrids.. I think we have at least another 10-15 years of gas powered vehicles.. But if we can have both mostly EV powered vehicles not contributing localized pollution in town.. But between towns and cities we are burning fuel... It's a win/win.

Agreed! When battery density improves, PHEV’s will be ideal for most commuters. My Prius Prime already has plenty range, so 80 miles would be an absolute dream.

Hybrids are going to be dead in the next 3-5 years. Nice concept the past 20 years but it’s time for EVs as it’s exponentially growing with adoption.

I bought the rav4 prime. The battery range excellent. Way over the advertised distance. Mainly driving EV with hybrid engine for occasional longer trips. Hope to get 10 years out of the prime and then hopefully full EV for the next vehicle.

You missed out on the digital rear view on the RAV4 :) Also, RAV4 Hybrid gives up almost nothing vs the reguar one and an in-between option.

the only reason I wouldn’t consider a tesla for the price point of both cars is because buying a rav4 you know that it’s going to be a solid build. With tesla you have to do a whole inspection of the car you have spent a lot of money on and waited forever to get.

I wouldn’t say TESLA infotainment blows it away (as a TESLA owner). Once you have CarPlay or Android Auto, you are set! Most of us Tesla owners, are still running Wayze or something similar, while the TESLA Navi is running since the TESLA Navi doesn’t give you everything. TESLA NAVI doesn’t allow you to choose different routes (even though it’s using Google Maps). I’m pretty much done with it and can’t wait to go back to CarPlay in the Prime! Interior styling is subjective, but I think OJBECTIVELY, any car maker who adorns their interiors with piano black is sub par…once you upgrade and apply something to cover the center stack of the TESLA, then it’s a better interior option. But, piano black is terrible….Range and flexibility needs to be a weighted category as a car’s primary job is to get you from A to B. The how it does it, the enjoyment, etc… are all secondary. Especially for a car in this category (SUV). Therefore, I think the comparo is much closer than 16-6 as the range and flexibility of the RAV4 is far superior.

My commute distance is an importance factor. As long as the EV range is good enough for my commute, I'm OK. Long range still can't address range anxiety for long trip. Long range wouldn't help much on daily commute.

In my region Tesla’s insurance is way more then the Rav4 prime! The fuel savings I would get with the Tesla would be hampered by 3x the insurance cost.

Ended up putting a downpayment for a RAV4 Prime. I had other considerations. I needed a shorter vehicle due to my garage size. There's almost a 7 inches difference in length between the two. However, I do not like the window action just in order to open and close the doors on the model Y. Creating solutions to problems that don't exist. Don't need that crap breaking down after a while, especially in heavy winter areas. Most of our driving is also short distances. Also in Canada, there is a massive price difference between the two. After taxes, the difference between the Moday Y AWD and RAV4 AWD Prime XSE (non-tech package) was $30K. Could not justify that. I think the biggest problem with the Rav4 Prime is actually lack of supply. If Toyota could actually get their act together, they'd be killing it.

I think the tires are under inflated in these cars ... I get 38-42 mpg... 36-38 cold tire inflation... snow traction is still great.. 20 f degree days... heat pump still works...

Not sure on your results, here in Québec a model Y is selling at 80 grand as for the Prime XLS goes for 55 grand minus 10 grand government incentives also we have very cold temps in the winter and electric vehicles including Tesla don’t do very well keeping the passenger cabin warm. Range is dramatically reduced windshield ice up and charging stations have lineups. For me I will stick with the RAV4 Prime superior craftsmanship better all around range off-road capabilities and a it’s spare tire.

I got the rav4 prime XSE Fully loaded. 51k plus 5k markup. In San Francisco, CA Two big reasons are: 1. Not enough charging stations yet, i don’t need to worry. 2. Toyota’s huge reputation and Toyotas can run with no problems. I have friends who own teslas and sad to say the always have issues. I prefer a transition to electric rather than jump too soon. Both cars are great and beautiful and I am positive that Tesla will continue to show great reliability and durable cars.

Why would you want to fill up at gas stations, get oil changes, brake replacements, etc.. Seems people have very low expectations. BTW, Tesla's batteries typically last 300,000 to 500,000 miles.

My friend has a new RAV4 Hybrid is he consistently getting 46 mpg for the entire 2 months he has owned it so far. You mentioned 35? That’s way to low. Must be the cold climate you are in.

I believe the Rav4 (Gas, hybrid, plug in hybrid) is an overall more reliable vehicle, and much more capable in different weather conditions or road conditions. Especially the gas models since they sit almost half an inch higher than the hybrids or primes. The model Y Tesla is an interesting vehicle for sure though.

The Prime comes with a $7500 tax credit, and my state provides an additional $2500 rebate. So my Prime SE with the moon roof and winter package only cost me $32k at the end the day. The stock barebones Hybrid RAV4 XLE is the same price. Why would anyone not buy the Prime? It's faster, quieter, has more amenities than the standard hybrid. And the build quality is far superior. We also have a Model 3 and prefer the user interface for my Primes. I love Android Auto and having tactile buttons for my climate control and other features. Digging through the Tesla screen gets old fast.

EVs, specifically only Tesla today, travel long distance with ease. It's 4 hours of driving then charge for 15 minutes it's a series of 3 hours of driving and 15 minutes of charging. It does start to add up after 10+ hours but it's a rare family that can drive 10 hours with only 45 minutes of breaks. It's a bad idea for young people without families that want to hot swap drivers across country.

Tesla is a decade behind toyota in building cars and toyota is 10 years behind tesla in technology. Will stick to car manufacturer for the time being but I have plenty of Tesla stocks

2:10 - NO. That's not correct design philosophy. It's not the user's fault, it's the product's fault. You are advocating the car being the boss. Saying range isn't a problem as long as you.....do A/B/C and concede that you can't get up at 5AM and hit the road and drive from San Diego to El Paso by 3 PM, then decide you really don't want to stop in El Paso and press on to Ft. Stockton and still make it there before dark. I have a kid in college 450 miles away from home. That is a 7 hour, 2 stop trip (one gas, one food) with maybe a total of 15 minutes non driving time. I don't want to change my habits to rotate around the limitations of a car.

Thanks for the honest assessment of the Prime. Honestly, for the limited EV range, and the rural, long-ish distance driving I do, I don't see a reason to pay the ~$15-20K price premium for the PHEV vs a standard Rav4, especially if you're only seeing ~33mpg highway. The interior LOOKS cramped, with a huge console and narrow footwells. And frankly, pretty dated and old-fashioned, but then, I've been watching too many Tesla videos. I'm also concerned about reliability-you have all the weight, cost and complexity of ICE car (plus normal ICE maintenance) plus the weight, cost and complexity of a BEV, plus the complexity of making both systems play together.

I was a similar situation. Got a prius and it was great when it worked. Gas was awesome there wasn't much maintenance besides he regular oil change etc. However, I did got an issue with the hybrid regeneration system which cost 2.5k and then few months later, had engine issue which would cost to much to fix....so I got double stabbed and kind of on the fence of a hybrid now...however, other prius owners have no issues. But if you do...its going to be expensive with ice engine and electric components

Not sure we will get there to be honest. By the time battery density gets to the point where a 70+mi PHEV makes sense, regular EVs will have insane ranges of 500+ miles all but erasing the range anxiety that is creating the PHEV market in the first place.

They actually do still sell the SR Model Y but they made it "Off-Menu" like the 35k Model 3 used to be. So you have to call them up and ask for it or go into a store.

I fail to find the luxury in the Model Y. And, just for the record, I do like a minimalist interior a la Polestar 3 or at least in appearance the Chinese NIO ET5 and ET7 and Xpeng's P7. Yes, the Y has a ton of features and some really sensible ones. The RAV4 is not luxury either, you go to Lexus for luxury. I also find it interesting how the Model Y is quieter than the RAV4 but also noisier. And maybe it is the sort of echos from the roof that make for that feeling. I'm also suspicious about the cargo area in the Y being more than the RAV4. The underfloor areas are clever and such but the roof does slope and the RAV4 is more squared off and higher. I guess the cars can be compared. I think of the RAV as a great PHEV but not meant to be any type of driver's car and still with reasonably good performance. The Tesla is a performance tall car that offers some utility and a pretty sporty feel. For me it feels techy over luxury but an argument could be made it has its own form of luxury due to the tech. Also, I do wonder if the bZ4X was meant to be like a RAV but with an "updated" interior concept. I think if so it would need to upgrade the charging speed.

The car will NOT let you deplete HV mode electricity, only EV only Electricity. You get 300hp EVEN with 0 EV mode battery.

This is a great review. I am currently cross shopping these two vehicles which, I thought odd as they are from different worlds. Wouldn't have thought I'd find a review not to mention such a good one. Your point about a PHEVs seeming like a good idea today but being a lot less so in the near future is the key point for me and the reason I have paralysis to move forward. The R4P is familiar, flexible and fits my needs, however, we're going to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement or do something very similar independently. 2030 isn't far away and the year a big reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will be mandated. That is going to make ICE vehicles the equivalent of dinosaurs and PHEVs not much better in the next 5 years. The natural choice and the less expensive choice is the R4P. I am having a hard time thinking of the Model Y as a small SUV but the numbers don't lie. Thank you for this review. Always great to get knowledgeable, experienced and subjective perspectives. Any regrets?

Wonderful comment, thanks for taking the time to write it. No Tesla regrets so far. Just rolled over 6500 miles with no hiccups. We both still love driving the car. In fact, we've got an LC 500 in the driveway right now, and I'm still taking the MY later today. I will say, it's a shame that the MY is getting so expensive now. As much as I love our Tesla, I don't think I would buy one now, given that we'd be spending $10k more than we spent on our SR back in January. I would have to consider other options, one of which being the new Bolt EUV. I know it's a huge step down in appeal, but that's just where we're at financially. Actually, if it weren't for the MY, I would have bought an off-lease 2017 Chevy Bolt or a super discouted model. Super great value. You'll be bored of the R4P in two years. Get an EV, even if it's not Tesla. Hyundai Ioniq 5, perhaps?

I thought this was a great comparison video when I first watched it but, 5 months later, I appreciate it even more. Charlie is very insightful regarding several topics like how relevant will a PHEV be in 3 years, how much easier BEV ownership will be when charging stations are more ubiquitous and the juxtaposition of old-world car making VS the Tesla ethos. After a lot of honest consideration (and even more waffling from one day to the next) I came to these two conclusions: living in the southeast, I have range anxiety and while my heart wants a Tesla my brain believes the R4P is the better choice for now. One factor that weighed heavily into the decision was the price increase on the Tesla due to the elimination of the less expensive RWD model AND the $7500 tax incentive on the Rav4. Unfortunately, a lot of decisions are driven by finances. So, I’ve owned a Rav4 Prime for a month now and have taken a few 3-hour road trips loaded with gear. Fuel economy on those trips starting with a full charge is over 42 MPG. Starting with no charge my RAV gets 38 MPG. The car is comfortable for front seat passengers (my kids are happy in the rear seats), the adaptive cruise is great (not so much the lane keep assist), wired CarPlay works well and the 40+ mile EV range allows for 100% electric driving in the city for me so far. The JBL audio is just okay to my ears and internal noise is acceptable for a car in this class. So far, the Rav4 really works for me and on a daily basis validates my decision. None of that takes anything away from the Tesla. I will own one some day and am looking forward to that. There are a lot of interesting PHEVs and BEVs being introduced this year and the choice of which new car will become even more complicated going forward. Not trying to veer into politics, I thought things would be different by this time. I thought this administration would reinstate tax credits for all EV manufacturers and I thought both fuel and electric prices would be lower. From the current point of uncertainty it will be interesting to see what happens going forward. Thanks again for a great video that remains solid all theses months later…

Maybe this is an Canadian thing, but I just priced the two cars, the rav4 prime came to 48k and the tesla came to 79k, they are just not similarly priced in Canada (no government rebates for tesla other than model 3, $5k for rav4).

It is also a Canadian thing. For a young person trying to plug in a battery EV, needs a driveway first. Good luck to get that in Vancouver or Toronto. Buy a property first before battery EV. Owning an EV assumes having a low rise property first. 1 million minimum for a townhouse plus price of EV. That is the true cost.

@@wgemini4422 huge difference between 18kwh vs 60kwh. 18kwh can live off commercially available chargers and can get by with gasoline. 60kwh, not so lucky

@@shichynwang Actually, it's the opposite. Since the Prime does not come with DC fast charging, the Tesla can be charged much faster and can last you several days of commute, at a slightly higher cost. Hmm, that's a good point. Not having access to at home charging does affect the decision.

@@SimplyCali619 Plenty of issues with legacy auto...I've seen issues like the ones they complain about on many different brands. How many cars does legacy auto recall per year? You're calling tesla junk but fail to realize that the powertrain is the most important thing in a car, and for that, no one comes even remotely close. Hybrid is pure garbage, plug in hybrid is straight up stupid. Don't beleive me? Watch what happens over the next few years.

@@VNCTHE1 and you say powertrain is most important well just Google Tesla failure rate and you'll see its almost dead last in reliability. The motors and battery may be great but lots of owners are having screen issues and that's a big system to loose. Again I'm not hating on Tesla, i would buy one if the Range were 700+ due to how many times I drive out of town and charging during trips would drive me nuts.

@@SimplyCali619 The screen failures are for model S and X older than 2018, the MCU is being recalled and replaced. Remember when this happened with Toyota? Don't think so because no one talks about it. They had to recall millions of cars for the backup camers not working....oh and what about the gas pedal fiasco? I have free supercharging for another year, I can literally drove cross country for free....it's like someone giving you an unlimited gas card, you fail to see that benefit. Even if I was paying for supercharging it's still about half what gas costs. Charging 20-30 minites every few hours is no big deal...ICE makes no sense

a 100k Model X has panel gaps, alignment issues. Two of my friends bought and both has the same issue. Teslas while its fast and fun but come to bay area commute, fun will be gone. Not all people with family and kids wants to drag race every single day. Tesla do not pay attention to quality because they want to build/sell millions of cars a year. They want profit not quality product.

Please tesla is not simplistic, I feel you should use better terms like minimalistic because tesla can be very very complex in a very unnecessary way and also less user-friendly, a lot of one step to many ways to do things or get to things, simple things like adjusting steering wheel, opening glove box or any adjustment at all is just unnecessarily complex and less straightforward and it doesn't help that 99.9% of your car depends on one screen

While driving the Toyota, I notice you just adjusted your air conditioning in under 1 second, and then let this sentence rip: "There is something to be said for the simplicity of the Tesla's layout." My dude, to accomplish that same task in your tesla would have taken no less than 5 seconds. I know this, I am an X owner - and this aspect of their UX is an abomination. A large/meaningful portion of the time performing adjustments in a Tesla is spent with your eyes off the road because you have to hunt and peck for the tactile-less touch controls on that idiotic ipad UX. Add to this that, as the years have rolled on since '16 when I got my vehicle, the operating system updates have buried the tactile controls on the steering wheel DEEPER AND DEEPER in mazes of menus, and you wind up with a car that is doing a balancing act between unwieldy and unsafe. Who on earth wants either of those things when both are avoidable with simple f*ing buttons/tactile controls? Check yourself!

@@JonathanRootD nonsense, everything is very simply layed out in the toyota you don't need to have an iPhone to use it. F1 drivers have all their buttons on the steering wheel and it makes live way way easier.

@@DailyMotor I appreciate your comment here, but what you have stated is very simply false. The temperature control is as you've described - and the buttons for it are incredibly tiny - however the A/C intensity is not visible/accessible via the main menu. One must press the 'fan' icon, which pops up a NEW window with buttons in different locations - and from this new menu one must then adjust the intensity. If you do not interact with the new menu within a few seconds - idunno - maybe because you'd rather watch the road and not die - it disappears and one must once again re-engage with this ridiculous system. It basically forces you to use the 'automatic' hold temperature mode, which is a ridiculous farse if you live somewhere like me, in Arizona, where the car is at times simply incapable of holding the temperature you set during summer months. The result? Maximum audio noise while i'm trying to do something else, like hold a conversation, answer the phone, or interact with the voice recognition system which thinks I mean "navigate to target" when i ask it to "play the beatles." I have no accent- it is actually just that bad. My alexa/siri and google assistant have no issues comprehending me very nearly 100% of the time, but in my car with the A/C on in the summer I have maybe a 5% shot of getting the damn thing to do what I want the first time I ask it. Tell me again how it's just 'one tap' ? Please. It is 3-4-5 or 6 taps in multiple places on two different menus... on a screen with no tactile feedback so you've no way to interact with it without staring at the damn thing. Also, it's laggy/slow. Maybe because I got one of the first ones- but holy hell my generation 1 ipad performs faster than my 2016 tesla UI. I am telling you it is the worst car UX I have ever experienced, and I have owned quite a few luxury vehicles.

I just wish the model Y wasn't so ugly. It's not a clear winner imo, but the looks are just "going out of your way" bad. The other thing is the range in the RAV4 is a massive win. You said that this argument might not be able to be made in a few years but the same argument can be applied to the current model Y. It just does not have the range. Lastly, build quality. Telsas just look cheap to me, I see uneven body lines, door gaps, even just parking beside them on the street. Just looks quickly thrown together. I guess I want a rav4 with the telsa powerplant more than anything, which seems to be happening now.

It's pretty subjective....I just bought a Y and love the look! So clean and it doesn't look like a Hyundai like everybody else....and a bonus is how nice it is to wipe the exterior clean because of no uneven lines and parts sticking out

Buying an electric car at this time is for someone who, doesn’t travel much, money to burn and probably has access to a garage. Not against electric, its just not convenient at this point. Plus we depend on our cars to get things done.

You base this on your experience owning an EV? Yeah I thought so. I've owned one for 2 years and could sell it today for a $2k loss in depreciation so around $15k less than other luxury cars. It has saved me $4,500 in fuel and actually saved me another $2500 in electricity since I now have an EV electricity plan which costs less to power my home. That's not even counting maintenance which would have been around $500 extra. I take 900 mile trips with no planning with ease.

It’s like you’re reading my mind. Thanks for this video. Long term ownership is probably less with the Tesla, since you’d still need ICE related maintenance services on the Prime. And, cost of electricity is far less than the cost of gasoline on the Prime, even if you are getting 40 mpg.

This is not a blanket EV vs ICE comparison. This is a Tesla vs Toyota comparison and Toyota has a long reputation for reliability and longevity. Long term ownership should sway toward the Toyota because of Tesla's current quality issues.

@@pilot1226 the Toyota Rav4 Prime qualifies for the federal $7,500 tax credit. The Tesla does not because they have already sold more than 200,000 EV's. Does your state give Tesla buyers more than $7,500? Here is the federal tax credit source: fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml

@@k1fizz There is legislation in Congress presently to reintroduce the federal tax credit. That would restore the $7500 credit and my state also gives up to $5000 for an EV. It does apply to PHEV, but my state charges sales tax on PHEV (not EV) as well as a prorated discount of $25 per all electric mile of range. On the Prime I believe that is 42 miles, so $1050. The Tesla is the better deal at the moment.

@@pilot1226 Yes, that is true. If you want the Tesla, definitely wait for Congress to pass the tax credit extension. If you want something today, the Toyota does provide a good alternative that currently gives it a leg up due to the tax credit.

4:30 I don't buy that german engineering hype BS, just because it's german does not give it magical handling abilities. Please explain (short of tires) what could possibly make the macan gts handle better than the model y, because the model y is the same weight in performance trim and lighter in sr trim, with a much, MUCHlower center of gravity and polar moment of inertia. I'm really plain disgusted at how people believe a car handles better because of it's german badge....😡

Rav4 prime - goes anywhere. Model Y - ugly toaster on wheels that can go fast. That said, only Tesla I would consider is an S or Roadster, otherwise they don't qualify as exciting or inspiring, and I think I'd rather have a S-Class or a 911 Targa instead.
