Got the 2022 Prime XSE with the 6.6kwh charger three weeks ago now. So far I am extremely happy with it. Left the dealership with a full tank of gas but the battery was not charged. Used some gas on the 50 mile trip home. Since that day, almost no gas used. (Just a smidge for another 50 mile trip on another day.) Holding at 3/4 of a full tank of the dealer's gas. My daily commute averages 32-35 miles round trip. For all intents and purposes, I have been driving a full EV vehicle for the past 3 weeks. Besides my in-range daily commutes, One of the reasons I went for the PHEV instead of a full EV is long summer road trips with the family. I drive many hundreds of miles and the last thing I want to experience is 'range anxiety'. Plus I don't feel the infrastructure is quite there yet to support EVs on the open highways.

Thanks for the comparison. How do you like the cloth seats in the RAV4 SE? Do they seem more breathable than the softex seats if you can compare? I had the XSE with ventilated seat package for a week in warm weather and it was fine, but I suspect the black pleather without the premium package is sweaty in the summer.

@@JamesKlafehn Dang, sorry you went through that. I thought Tesla quality and reliability might improve before my purchase but it doesn't seem likely. Plus, no option for either cloth or ventilated pleather on the Y I'm also considering:-( They can't even provide a full detailed feature list like you can find for almost every other vehicle on the manufacturer's website, pdf brochure or media site. Tesla sales reps can only provide a link to the mechanical specifications in the owner's manual lol.

I've been on a dealer's waitlist for a RAV4 Prime since March, with delivery requested in 2021, and supposedly no additional dealer markup. Since then, the VW ID.4 came along and got my attention, and I put down a deposit for one with the Pro S trim level. I like the Prius Plug-in I bought in 2012 and continue to drive, but I think I'm ready to go full EV. I like Teslas, but the ID.4 is more my style.

As a Rav4 Prime and Gen2 Prius owner, I can tell you Rav4 Prime is what Toyota made for us (20 million + Prius and Rav4 owners) to upgrade to. Everything I wished Prius has (bigger, plushness, more power, more visibility, more tech, more efficiency) is in the Rav4 Prime. This is not an EV, so comparing it to a Tesla or any other EV is silly. This Prime is just the most powerful, most efficient, and best performing hybrid Toyota can make today. So if you want a better hybrid or better Rav4, this is the car. If you want an EV or Tesla, this isn't your car.

I've been considering these two for a while. Have an ID.4 AWD on order as well. Also interested in Sorento PHEV and Corsair GT. Each have pros and cons but it seems likely when I pull the trigger this spring or summer, the Model Y will be the only one I can actually get in the Midwest.

I had a PHEV. Seemed like a good choice but with tiny battery it's a pain to plug in all the time if you want to drive on electric, which the Tesla does very well. My GF got a full electric, and now I can't wait to trade in my Outlander. It was a good stop-gap technology, but now Tesla does electric better than anyone does gas for the price.

Totally agree with your review. NJ also charges zero sales tax on EV’s but does charge the standard 6.625% on PHEV/ICE as well. I shopped these two against the Subaru Outback Onyx XT and ended up going for the Onyx XT because of the extra cargo space and more car like and less SUV like feel. Super comfortable and better driver assist features than the Prime, and about $15,000 less than the Tesla. If I had to have a Hybrid, the R4P would be hard to pass up, but for the price differences it was even harder to skip the Subaru. This is my 4th Subaru and they are excellent especially in bad weather.

You forgot to mention the back seats are heated in the Model Y. There is also a lot of foot room (not just leg room) in the Model Y as the front seats leave a large space beneath them. I also like the small cavern beneath the center console that you can put a small 6-can cooler underneath for back-seat occupants.

Toyota RAV4 Prime is a SUV vehicle with a practical relatively upright hatch at the luggage compartment, has a decent ground clearance, and high profile tires relatively resistant to potholes. Tesla Model Y is a coupe CUV with low profile tires, low ground clearance and large luggage compartment but unpractical due to its slope yet with frunk. On the roads with potholes Tesla requires a lot of maintenance for those wheels getting very often punched tires. Nice video!
@wilsonhitchings6687
@wilsonhitchings6687 3 жыл бұрын
There is nothing unique or peculiar to Telsa and potholes - it's the IDIOTS that put 20" or greater wheels on their cars. This effectively removes the air cushion that a tire provides. Put a STUPID 20" or 21" rim on any vehicle, drive over a pothole and boom! you've got damage.
@nevco8774
@nevco8774 3 жыл бұрын
@@wilsonhitchings6687 The problem is different with Tesla since in high profile wheels/tires the brake calipers do not fit so mostly all folks ARE forced into low profile tires designed by company to enhance performance which unfortunately does reduces practicality on rough roads getting flat tires, and greatly spoils ride cushioning while cruising along the road. This is a problem for folks not trying to show off on the track but rather using public roads. No wonder Model S and X came by default with air suspension.

@OurTeslaModelXJourney
@OurTeslaModelXJourney 3 жыл бұрын
When I first got in our Model X, I thought the view out the back was small. Is the view out the back of the Model Y smaller than the X, yes. That said, you can see plenty. And, the seat is not what restricts the view. It's the size of the glass and the angle of the glass. Honestly, after you drive either for a few days, you'll be totally used to it. And again, you can see everything you need to see. Only way to know for sure for you is to test drive one of them. We do not keep the back-up camera on in Drive, but some people do like to drive like that.

The Prime is a great choice if you can find one at msrp. The Y is the one to get if money is not an issue. Though the uncomfortable backseats in the Y are bad enough to be a deal breaker. It’s less comfortable than the Model 3s back seats. It’s too hard and the headrests are too small. I think they rushed it’s design by prioritizing the ability to fold it flat over comfort. Wait for Tesla to redesign it if you regularly carry adults in the back.

My situation...I wanted the Rav 4 Prime with Federal $7500 rebate...but where to get it! they only produce 5000 units & due to availability Dealer would mark-up so much, the final cost would be in $ 50k-ish anyway but I need another AWD car now.... Subaru Cross trex hybrid too small & too $ for its size, Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt are too dated, Nissan Araya looks too typical SUVish and not out just yet. Also tired of maintenance of all fluid in ICE/Hybrid cars so Tesla Model Y Dual Motor AWD is the answer. I settled with $2500 CA State tax rebate and $ 800 PGE clean-air rebate. Even though it is not a completely perfect car but who does not like a car company’s’ concept whose CEO’s vision is crazy in relaunch & reusable rocket thrusters, Hyper loop, Cyber City, Solar energy roof, Stock value etc...

In hindsight after more than 2 years Toyota RAV4 Prime became an unobtanium, while Tesla Model Y is quite available. These days late in 2023 the options for electrified vehicles present more variety. However in North America there are more EVs vs PHEVs. Today if I had to choose a PHEV for my family I would prefer Volvo V60 extended range PHEV with 40 miles full EV range able to be used for short commute and very long comfortable trips. In the BEV world once again I prefer a small hatchback commuters like Volvo EX30, Kia Niro EV 2023, Chevrolet Bolt EUV with decent leg room in the rear. Smaller EVs like Hyndai Kona EV or Chevrolet Bolt EV have no leg room in the rear for my kids. Tesla has not yet offerred anything in that segment. I am not yet convinced that in 2023 any EV sold in the USA is suitable for long trips the way I need it: just a few times a year but far away from charging infrastructure. My personal conclusion: since any family has to have 2 vehicles one should be a long range commuting EV, the second a PHEV used for long trips and short commutes.

Things like where you live makes a difference too. Here's there's a Toyota dealer everywhere but my nearest Tesla service centre is 130 miles away. I can sometimes need to do long trips so the 600 +mile range of the Toyota is appealing too while the EV range will be fine for most or all of my local trips. Also think Toyota make proven long term reliable/solid cars, Tesla's are still a bit unknown - I've seen some of the bills people have been left with after the warranty expires. Tesla are very forward thinking and think will get better an better, in 5 years from now with full EV's from other manufacturers & improved battery tech it'll be a good time to buy

One thing that was neglected here was talking about off-road capability. I believe Kyle got stopped from continuing down an off-road path in his model 3 on one of his road trips. The model y doesn't have really significantly more ground clearance. That's one place where the RAV4 certainly has a significant advantage. I would not be afraid to drive off-road over big potholes or rough terrain etc. You're not going to do that in a model y. For me I wish Tesla had an option to get rid of the panoramic glass roof. If you live anywhere where it's hot, west Texas or Florida that glass roof is a nightmare, you have to crank the air conditioning 10° colder than you need it just to keep up with the solar input. I don't need a sunroof, I don't want a sunroof yet I have no choice with the Tesla. I suspect one of the reasons they make it standard is it gives them a way to add additional headroom which would be required to make the car even livable in the back seat. I also think the door handles inside and out are a poor design. If you have to explain to somebody how to use the door handle you failed as a designer, can you imagine as an Uber car every time somebody gets in the car they're going to be pawing and pressing and fidgeting trying to figure out how to open the damn door and the same problem getting out of the car pressing a button to open the door when they could have just used a door handle like every other car on the planet.

The big question on the Prime is can you drive exclusively on the battery or not. On my regular hybrid, when I first start the car, it wants to warm up the engine and so runs even if I know I am only going to go 1 mile to the grocery store. Finally, part of me wonders if well publicised problems like panel gap issues are indicative of other problems that will show up over time. Don't get me wrong, when my Camry dies I will seriously consider a Tesla - especially if they open a dealer closer than 1000 km away (my current distance from a Tesla showroom). I'm not trying to be a hater, just a worrier. A Model Y is 56k CDN, and I would want to be sure about long term reliability before putting down that kind of money.

People are getting the RAV4 hybrid and RAV4 prime mixed up. Especially for tax credit. Anyways, the comparisons I was hoping for was rear bench width (3 kids) as well as offroading ability. There seems to be a massive difference in ground clearance. Cottage / hunting cabin, etc will probably not do well with a full EV only a few inches off the ground.

I've had a Model Y for six months. One-pedal driving is in a different ballpark than driving experience in any conventional car-night and day better. Instant response. It's puzzling to me that Toyota has yet to go the full EV route. Yes, there was the RAV4 EV, but that was a one-off CA compliance car with a Tesla powertrain. Toyota has built the Prius for over 20 years, so they have had an enormous amount of experience with hybrid powertrains. So what's keeping them from entering the EV arena? Do they think battery tech isn't there yet? Or are they convinced that fuel cells are where it's at?

Toyota is not going to get fully involved until they see a market share large enough to make it profitable and worthwhile. They sell over 300,000 Corollas every year just in the United States. They sell about the same number of Toyota Camrys. That's the thing they manufacture on massive scales. Tesla is barely even profitable, no legacy manufacturer wants to get involved in something that is barely profitable. You also have to consider whether or not there is even enough resources to make enough batteries currently to even do it the answer is probably no. there are materials shortages already to make battery packs it's one of the things holding back the electric cars from Korea. the thing Tesla has in their back pocket is a massive amount of cash right now. I think they've done a fantastic job overall I like their power trains and battery technology but I absolutely detest their interiors and so do a lot of other people most people don't want to be driving a freaking spaceship they want a car that's familiar to what they already have. One thing Kyle forgot to mention was any ability to do any kind of off-roading. He did a road trip where he had to stop on a path because he didn't have enough ground clearance in his model 3. The model y would have the same problem because it doesn't really have any significant ground clearance. That RAV4 can go places you might not expect it is all-wheel drive and has ground clearance.

Right now there isn't enough supply of battery raw materials to even do it if they decided to do it today so why bother do it at all. We have no idea what kinds of research and development are going on behind closed doors. Hydrogen seems the wrong direction to me, however it does have some positives. I suspect for the next 20 years or so we're going to see a mix of different types of power trains in use period that gives them plenty of time to see where the wind is going to blow permanently before jumping in and making a corporate decision.

Taken from the Toyota website: "With up to an EPA-estimated 42-mile EV Mode driving range on a full charge, you could potentially drive using only electricity for short commutes." More Toyota BS. The average daily commute in the US is 30 miles. 42 miles is a long commute, yet Toyota wants to make you feel insecure about range by claiming 42 miles is short and by using subjunctive tense ("could") instead of using present tense ("can"). This all plays into Toyotas' refusal to build compelling BEVs that CAN easily replace fossil gobblers.

Also, you should not give people "pass" on lifestyle excuse. Slave owners had to undergo "drastic" lifestyle change, but US still forced the change because it was the moral thing to do. Reducing your emissions, is equally important (if not more). Also - you just skipped over Tesla's software - Autopilot (and FSD), infotainment, constantly expanding feature set of Tesla.
