I’ve owned 4 LR’s in my lifetime. I bought the 2020 p400 and I have been absolutely blown away with it’s off road and on road ability. I’m just now at 30,000 miles and I still get excited just to make a run to the store. As far as reliability well I’ve never had a problem with any . A few small things yes in the older cars but overall they have been amazing. Bottom line , I love the car , there is absolutely nothing else I would rather drive.

@@gixxr88 Wow , interesting. I have gone on several rood trips and have been extremely comfortable. I will say that the seat material itself is a bit hard to clean. Also check the tire pressure if you take the p400 for a drive. Set the tires for normal load. The 10 extra PSI in heavy Load does add some percussion to the ride. Good Luck 👍

Defender is best as an all around performer. Reliability would be hard for them to test, and would be unfair for them to assume or guess. It is on the potential buyer to do their research and know if they want to keep the car 10 plus years or be changing it in 5. Same goes for ease of modification for touring or hard tracks driving. So, let's not start insulting the work they have done to come to their conclusion, just because your favorite car was not chosen.

Motoring reviews generally don't take reliability into consideration. When reviewing a 4wd, reliability should be a key aspect. The simple fact is that LR have a proven record of unreliable vehicles over the past 20 years. Fact!. Argue to your heart's content, it will not make any difference. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a new Defender but hate the idea of spending that much money and risking the consequences.

The D300 Is the pick for heavy off roading . The PPF fitted petrols don't like deep water crossings & the filter can end up suffering serious damage . This was proven during testing in the US about 18 months ago where a P400 apparently was totally written off . If you do prefer a petrol, keep it well under the Max allowable wading depth. Diesels don't appear to have any issues.

What accessories can you get, Bull bar, winch etc. how upgradable are they say for a GVM.. yes you can say your only rating them as stock, but if someone buys one for touring thinking they have the best option, well do they really..... your thoughts would be appreciated on this... all good vehicles though and just in case you are wondering, I purchased my Discovery 4 based on your review when it won a few years back and had issues getting parts traveling as also trouble finding people to work on it in the outback .... look forward to reading your thoughts...regards..

They said not sure can't see anything so you should be ok.. got to Broome where by now it was worse, again most places said they didn't work on Land Rovers. I found a place and they were great, had a chopped out lower control arm bush , told me it would be roughly 2 to 3 weeks to get the part or I could go to Perth to Land Rover.... don't get me wrong great cars for east coast and major cities and the D4 I could get aftermarket products for them. But if you look at what R&D is happening out there and what your going to get parts for in most places its a land cruiser. But the Defender is a great car 100%... have a great weekend and appreciate your feedback..

Even though it is better looking and more comfortable, because it is packed with technology (turbo, electronic assistance etc.), it is more at risk of failures on the long run. For those who sell their car at 100,000 to 150,000 km, the Defender is maybe a better choice. For those like me who keep cars longer, maybe a more simple car like the Land Cruiser or the Patrol will last longer with less trouble. My Pajero is 17 years old and 170,000 km with not a single failure (except once when turning on the air-conditionner made it overheat once and in the same day the dealer changed a small piece). My friends with land rovers experienced a few complications and much higher maintenance costs. However, the Defender 130, with its 3rd raw seats suitable for adults, beats the Land Cruiser and Patrol for those carrying more than 5 adults.

Defender has enormous capability and is comfortable as anyone could want in a 4x4. But the unspoken question is how reliable it will be, and how are you going to get it repaired if you break down outside of a capital city. Dealers don't have a great reputation, so even if you do break down near one, you're unlikely to get well looked after. Break down in the outback and you'll be in for a long trip on the back of a flat-bed truck. I have much love for Land Rovers and have owned more than 10, but the Defender has strayed too far from it's roots as a utilitarian vehicle, and it's just another Discovery level product now, for city based folks. Too complicated and too expensive.

The thing is when you buy the land rover - you buy the land rover. There isn't any expectation you will be modifying it. My last 3 cars have been discovery, 2, discovery 3 & RR sport. I just bought a LC 300 Sahara. It's just been into ARB & had a 2 inch lift, bull bar, driving lights, recovery points, winch & radio put in. Also had a GVM upgrade. It'll go back in when the suspension needs a check at 500KM for Snorkel, steel bash plates, diff breather kit. I will also put rock sliders but not from ARB as I don't like the look of theirs. I will also put a rear E-locker on it. I suspect after this it will be a more capable vehicle than the defender. I think it drives nearly as well as my RR sport. It's a bit noisier but as it's more agricultural in nature I expect this. I bought the LC fully expecting to modify it from stock.

@Aaron Adkins I agree completely. Land Rover have unfairly developed a reputation of unreliability. Yes, both of my Land Rovers (a 1974 Series 3 88” and a 2000 TD5 Discovery 2 with 500k kms on the clock) are off the road at the moment, but they’re always fixable. Parts are always available from somewhere. There is a certain “Land Rover tax” where everything is kinda expensive but that’s just Land Rover. I wouldn’t say they break down/stuff on them breaks any more or less than a Land Cruiser or any other brand. They’re painful to fix sometimes, yes, and have an infinite amount of nuances that only the owners can understand. But in general, you can rely on them to get you where you need to go. Both of mine are old, and tend to last a couple weeks or months before the next thing pops up. Always sick, but never dead.

Yes 130 model should be released in the UK approx July this year. 130 is same wheelbase as the 110, but with about 30 cm of extra length at the rear. Much more room as a 7 seater, and more cargo space

Love Defender - Think JLR have done an amazing job - However its not a serious off-roader. It is a off road vehicle but not an off road vehicle people can build as a tourer. The one thing I do not agree with Drive - You do not do review you are presenting a car on behalf of a manufacturer. A true reviewer should talk about longevity and reliability. That goes to all brands you review. Car with 100 KM on the lock is not car - its a new toy. And day to day customer hardworking public need more information in a car.

No new car reviews go into long term reliability because mostly they can't. Landcruiser and Defender here are both really new ground up models so how can they comment on that? Past models reliability can't objectively be used because it would be making assumptions that reliability hasn't been either improved or declined from the previous models. You should check out redriven if you want longevity reviews. They are great reviews too.
@TheAthavanleon
@TheAthavanleon 2 жыл бұрын
@@smuy3782 I do watch Redriven- how a good journalist would analyse the past behaviour and how the product had been developed prior it's release. All I am saying is they can not come and say its the best SUV because it feel luxurious.
@smuy3782
@smuy3782 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheAthavanleon I think as a review what they are doing is correct. They drive the cars, they talk about what they experience. Comfort, handling, capability, practicality etc. I reckon they covered most of that. I think what you are looking for is investigative journalism which doesn't exist in the automotive media. Any time anyone mentions the testing and development that has gone into a new model is because it was included press pack they received at the launch.

Unsurprisingly the LR came out on top, and unsurprisingly the land rover fans just don’t get why these vehicles have limited popularity. I’ve lived & worked in the outback all my adult life and the only time I see LRs is when someone from the city drives by or I happen to go past a station lay down yard & see a series 2 that broke Half a century ago. Compared to Japanese vehicles they have limited tyre options in regional areas, they have no dealer networks (northern WA for example has Toyota dealerships in Broome, Kununurra, Halls creek) & a heap of independent mechanics in between know these vehicles inside out. And for people who want to go touring there’s SFA aftermarket accessories in comparison. So it doesn’t matter how many awards they win, or how many pasty motoring journos give them the thumbs up they’ll never have the popularity of the SE Asian vehicles

Motortrend also chose the Defender as their SUV of the year for 2021. And they got shat on hard. Rightfully so. If you know a bit how automotive journalism works than you know that this is no more than a paid advertisement. Whilst I will agree that the Defender is better on road than a body on frame SUV, this for me does not make it a better car overal. The quality and reliability issues should place the Defender in 3rd place behind the Patrol. The Defender is just not made to last long after the warranty runs out.

Getting tired of the constant repeating of unproven claims against land rover. Everyone cites Consumer reports, no one has any data on land rover. Every one repeats some other comment they heard or that "they know a guy who has a friend who is a mechanic and says land rovers suck". Land Rovers are only as high maintenance as their owners. A Toyota could be on fire and the fans would say everything is fine. A land rover owner might get streak in the windshield because of an old wiper and they'd take it to a dealer and complain. Through advertising land rover has appealed to a higher maintenance audience and consumer and so has gained a reputation of higher maintenance. I moved from years of LC ownership to a discovery and I dont look back.

@@aaronadkins8234 yeah couldn’t agree more. I do like me a Toyota and it’s always a brand that you have to consider when buying a vehicle. Having said that JLR have really done a great job with their current fleet of cars. Especially the defender. I can agree with some that Land Rover has had their fair share of problems, but what car hasn’t? Since TATA bought JLR, I believe they are really trying to show the consumer that JLR products are just as reliable as other brands( proof of them doing this is now they offer 5 year warranty on all JLR models). Back in 2016 my wife and I were looking for a new family SUV and ended up buying a 2016 Disco sport. We were aware of all the people saying their issues with JLR( mainly reliability) but we took the chance and haven’t regretted it. Since owning it we have down now over 140000kms and had no issues whatsoever. We use this vehicle for everything (only car we have) we tow our camper trailer with it, take off road, camping and been to multiple trips to QLD and NSW (I’m from VIC) in it fully loaded and hasn’t skipped a beat. We service it and look after it (like any responsible car owner should with any car) and car looks after us and gets us to wherever we want to go.
